Migrate DFS to Windows 2012

We are currently running Windows2003R2 as our DFS server. This server has three network drives to address the Department folders and User folders. Some of the department folders are replicating to remote servers. The remote servers are running Windows2008R2.
I want to migrate the Windows2003 DFS server to Windows 2012 in virtual environment. Please advise how I can migrate to new serevr with minimum downtime to the users. I am thinking of splitting the department and user folder to multiple DFS servers. Also
advise how I can get fault tolerance and high availability on the DFS servers in VMware environment.
Please advise.

Hi,
To minimize downtime and reduce impact to users, plan your data migration to occur during off-peak hours. Use the “net share” command to list all shared folders on the source server.

  • Windows 2000 user account migrate to new Windows 2012 R2 domain

    Hi all
I have a customer using Windows 2000 domain with many user accounts and file share service.
Now they want to use a new Windows 2012 domain without upgrade from old 2000 domain due to some hidden problem.
Customer requested to keep user name, password, uid for existing file share access.
May I know any tools for migrate user account from Windows 2000 domain to Windows 2012 domain?
    thx
    Q K

    Hi,
Can you please confirm your requirement, that is you will be using a new Windows 2012 domain with only the user accounts from Windows 2000 domain.
If the above text matches your requirement, I would suggest you the following steps,
    1. You can use CSVDE - command line tool to export the AD user information as CSV file from  Windows 2000 domain,
    http://www.techrepublic.com/blog/data-center/simplify-admin-tasks-by-exporting-active-directory-data-with-csvde/
    2. Then, you can import the CSV file with required user attributes (domain details modified according to the target domain) to Windows 2012 domain using PowerShell as
shown in the link given below,
    http://blogs.technet.com/b/bettertogether/archive/2011/01/09/import-bulk-users-to-active-directory.aspx

  • Migration of DNS from Windows 2008 R2 to Windows 2012

    Hello,
We have a pair of Windows 2008 R2 servers running authoritative DNS services (they are not AD controllers, neither used as resolvers). There are ~20 domains + 10 DNSSEC domains hosted on those servers. We're considering to migrate them to Windows 2012
    servers and retain IP addresses.
I'd greatly appreciate if somebody could advise the basic steps for such migration (particularly the DNSSEC part).
    Many thanks.

    Hi,
It worked for me with a test zone but my example only had a single A record. You should test this first by adding the zone and testing resolution on the 2012 server before deleting it from the 2003 server.
The bug for secondary zones that you describe in Server 2008 is news to me. However, 2012 and 2012 R2 has many advantages over 2008 R2 for DNSSEC signed zones so I would recommend you migrate even if you weren't having problems on 2008 R2.
If you've been following the thread you mentioned above, you know that I've been doing a lot of testing with signed zones being updated on secondary servers. The signed zone is *always* updated on a secondary server but if the change on the primary was only
a signature refresh then as of right now there is still a bug where the newest RRSIGs are not transferred to the secondary server. This happens because the zone transfer occurs just before the new RRSIG is generated on the primary. This causes it to be left
behind on the primary server unless there is another zone transfer afterward. Note that a zone transfer still happens, it just happens too soon. The zone transfer that happens is an incremental zone transfer.
If the previous RRSIG expires before another zone transfer occurs then the zone can have validation problems on the secondary. There is a hotfix for this that will be distributed soon. I am checking now on the date.
If you increment the serial # on the primary, the secondary should get a full zone transfer.

  • Issues with Shell32.dll, NTDLL.DLL and Migration from Windows 2003 to Windows 2012

    Hello all,
I am new to ThinApp and working as a consultant to help a company migrate older Windows 2003 software to Windows 2012.  They have purchased ThinApp 5.0.4.5 so that is what we will be using.
We have created a clean 2003 VM and did a pre-scan
We loaded the application and configured it  and then did a capture.
We then tested the capture the 2003 VM and it works
We then loaded the capture on a Clean 2003 VM and it works
We then loaded onto a 2012 VM and when running the app from a command window get an error  -missing import shell32.dll:StrCpyNW
If we run the capture in Emulation Mode on 2012 VM, we do not get the Shell32.dll error but instead the cmd fails with a Fault Module Name  - NTDLL.DLL error
I am sure I am just missing the correct location to identify or configure the capture - but do not have the experience to know where yet.  (Taking training next week).
Until then, is there any suggestions which I can try?
Thanks for your time in advance,
    Vince

Tried and done that.  The main issue while configuring the printer from the printer Web Interface is that there is no access to the Digital Sending section due to a problem with the "Sun Java plug in"  I think the code mentions 1.31. or similar.
We downloaded the java plug in and installed it.  No progress.
We reset the printer to defaults and reconfigured it .. It sees the smtp gateway and access it but fails sending email with scanned documents..
We have tried in very different ways.  We connected the printer to another domain SBS server 2003 and it works beautifully.  So, I have no idea on what is the problem. We created a firewall exception for ports 390. 1783 from the SBS to the Printer
    and still no go..
We have tried four different accounts and nothing.  Same results as stated originally.
    Any other suggestions??

  • Migration from Small business server 2011 standad to Windows 2012 Server Standard

    Hi everyone,
I have a network with SBS 2011 standard (that is the only server) and now we are moving (migrating) to windows 2012 server standard with an exchange 2013 (not yet installed).
The main thing is that when trying to install the migration tool on the SBS server, it will not install because it is not a 2008 R2 server.
is there a workaround for this problem?
I Hope this will help. Amir Ovadia

    Hi,
Would you please first let me know how did you perform the migration? Regarding the migration tool, is it the Windows Server Migration Tools in Windows Server 2012 R2? Since you need to install
the Windows Server Migration Tools on the source SBS 2011 server, I suggest we could perform the following steps to install it.
Create deployment folders for ource computers by running the
smigdeploy.exe tool (included with Windows Server Migration Tools) on your destination server.
Register Windows Server Migration Tools on source computers that are running Windows Server 2012, Windows Server 2008 R2, Windows Server 2008, or Windows
    Server 2003 by using SmigDeploy.exe.
For details, please refer to the following article.

In addition, here are some similar threads about how to perform the migration from SBS to Windows Server 2012 Standard, maybe they are useful to us.

  • Migrate to Windows 2012 R2 and Exchange 2013 SP1 using database portability

Hi, I'm planning to migrate from Exchange 2013 SP1 running on Windows 2012 to Exchange 2013 SP1 on Windows 2012 R2.
Is it possible to use database portability to move the databases from the exchange installation on win 2012 to the new installation on Win 2012 R2? This would save a great deal of time not doing the mailbox moves.
I've searched similar cases but couldn't find any, all speak about disaster recovery and database portability but I've found no articles that uses the migration scenario.
Would it be possible to do and if so, what would the steps be? Do I need to delete the database from the source server, move the database files to the new server and mount them and relocate the mailboxes? Or should I dismount the database on the source server,
move them to the new server and mount them and relocate the mailboxes?
    Frank.

    Hi,
According to your description, I recommend you consider using DAG to achieve your requirement.
The following steps for your reference:
1.Prepare a new server which installed windows 2012 R2 for Exchange 2013 mailbox server.
2.After you deploy Exchange 2013 Mailbox servers, you can create a DAG, add Mailbox servers to the DAG, and then replicate mailbox databases between the DAG members.
3.After replication, you can mount all the databases on the new server.
    Hope this helps!
    Thanks.

  • Migration of windows 2008 std 32bit DC to windows 2012 std

i have 32bit DC in my local environment having schema ver 44.. now i hav another server and want to migrate to windows 2012 std edition.. can some one guide me how to achieve this task?

    Hi Babarmunir,
In-place upgrades from 32-bit to 64-bit architectures are not supported. All editions of Windows Server 2012 are 64-bit only.
Domain controllers that run 64-bit versions of Windows Server 2008 or Windows Server 2008 R2 can be upgraded to Windows Server 2012. You cannot upgrade domain controllers that run Windows Server 2003 or 32-bit versions of Windows Server 2008. To replace
them, install domain controllers that run a later version of Windows Server in the domain, and then remove the domain controllers that Windows Server 2003.
Hence you need to have a fresh x64 machine which you can join to domain and install ADDS Role then promote as additional domain controller.
Provided the Forest Functional Level is Windows Server 2003 at minimum.
Upgrading previous retail versions of Windows Server to Windows Server 2012:

Upgrade Domain Controllers to Windows Server 2012 R2 and Windows Server 2012
Use the below guide to setup the ADC:
Step-By-Step: Adding a Windows Server 2012 Domain Controller
System requirements for Windows Server 2012 are unchanged from Windows Server 2008 R2. For more information, seeWindows Server 2008 R2 with SP1 System Requirements (http://www.microsoft.com/windowsserver2008/en/us/system-requirements.aspx).
The Schema and Domain preparation:  One could run

  • MDT 2012 to Migrate from Windows 2003 32 Bit to Windows 2012 R2 64 Bit

I have used MDT for so long however only for client OS upgrade - XP to Windows 7/8.
We wish to use MDT to migrate from Windows 2003 32 Bit to Windows 2012 R2 64 Bit. All servers are virtual on HyperV or VMWare - plan is to use USMT hardlink Migration.
Is this supported? Has anyone used this for server migration?
Regards, Vik Singh "If this thread answered your question, please click on "Mark as Answer"

    Thanks Keith for your reply.
Even is USMT does not work, we are ok. SMIGdeploy will be helpful.
Basically, want MDT to run some scripts on the Windows 2003 server, post which install Windows 2012 and join it to the existing domain with the same computer name.
Then hydration kit to help with the installation of features etc. Also, we would like to take a complete backup to a WIM before migrating.
I am sure this is workable.

  • Windows 2012 migration

    Hi,
Can anybody help me in knowing this?
We are migrating our applications from windows 2003 to windows 2012.
While running one of my service in 2012, it gives me an error "Number: '438'. Description: 'Object doesn't support this property or method'". I have installed the application, and imported all the registries from 2003 to 2012.
So my question is, while creating the object for a class from other project it could not reach out to it. Will this error is because of port numbers(like different servers will have different port numbers)? If so, guide me on how to find the port number.
Suggest if any other possible reason .
    Thank you.

    Hi,

  • Is it possible to Migrate Live VMs from a Windows 2012 Hyper-V Cluster to a different 2012 R2 Cluster?

At the moment I'm in a bit of dilemma because I know that Windows 2012 supports "Shared Nothing Live Migration" but recently I got to know that this feature is available for stand alone Hyper-V Servers. My Setup is that I have
3 Servers running Windows Server 2012 Hyper-v Failover Cluster and I need to migrate everything to a new cluster running on Windows Server 2012 R2 and offcourse some VMs can't be turned off during migration so I need to do this live during production hours.
Another note is that both clusters will be running on the different LUNs since each cluster has its own CSVs. I need to know if it is possible to migrate such VMs/Roles Live without have any downtime of the VMs/Roles?

Yes, but one exception - live migration works only on "compatible cpu's". There actually is a setting in CPU for forcing compatibility
mode. If that is not set, and you mvoe for example from AMD to Intel, then - this is not possible in live migration, cluster or not.

    Dear All:
We want to migrate DC 2003 to DC 2012, it 's mixed mode now. At first, We were shutdown the DC 2003 and ACS 4.2 sometimes got error "Internal error" when user couldn't access network in VPN or Wireless but not all of users. Finally, We open the DC 2003 ASAP, user can login at once. the error doesn't appear again. it is so weired. We had validated it can work with ACS 4.2 separately in windows 2012 or 2003 DC not mixed in Lab before migration. it seems to depend on DC 2003, we don't know how to do next step. • Cross forest Windows 2008 to Windows 2012 R2 migration... no ADMT?

I was planning on using ADMT to migrate the users and PCs from an existing Windows 2008 domain to a Windows 2012 R2 domain but I just read that ADMT is not supported on Windows 2012 R2.
Are there any other suggestions on a migration tool to use?
    Kind regards,
    /RW/

ADMT can still be the way to go - there's a nice blog post here documenting the operation and the BIG consideration with the approach: http://c-nergy.be/blog/?p=3970.
Basically as long as you haven't activated any of the new features found in 2012/2012R2 functional levels, you can temporarily downgrade the forest and domain functional levels so that the system requirements for ADMT can be achieved (a 2008R2 DC in the
target domain for the PES component of ADMT 3.2). A detailed list of features is documented
here. When the migration is done, the functional levels can be set again to their original values.
Complete details about lowering / raising the forest and domain functional levels are here: http://social.technet.microsoft.com/wiki/contents/articles/850.how-to-revert-back-or-lower-the-active-directory-forest-and-domain-functional-levels-in-windows-server-2008-r2.aspx
The technet pages for the cmdlets referenced in the article point to old versions; the new ones are as follows -
    Set-ADForestMode and
    Set-ADDomainMode.
    Last and not least,
an upgraded version of ADMT has been announced and should be out soon. If the migration can be postponed for a while, this should take care of the downsides of the previously described method.

  • Windows Migration from 2003 to 2012

    Hi,
When I try to complile my vb6 code, it gives me "ActiveX component cannot create object" in half way of compiling. Advice me to get over the error.

    Hi,
Did you have any migration issue during migration from 2003 to 2012?
There are  several causes, for example
    The class isn't registered.
A DLL required by the object can't be used, either because it can't be found, or it was found but was corrupted.
For more detail information, you could refer to this article:

  • Can I migrate physical hard disks in storage space from Windows 2012 R2 to Windows 2012?

    Hi,
We have a Windows 2012 R2 server.  It's running storage space with 10 hard disk in Parity mode.  We would like to move the hard disks from Windows 2012 R2 server to Windows 2012, so that we can "free" our windows
2012 R2 server to do something else.   Can we just unplug the hard disks in Windows 2012 R2 and hook it to Windows 2012 server without any data lose?  If we can do it, what's best "formal" procedures to do it?
    Thanks,
    Tak

    Hi Tak,
Storage space will be recognized in different servers (and even clients) which support.
If it is just a "Parity mode", you can turn off the computer, unplug and connect these disks to the new server directly.
If any Windows Server 2012 R2 new feature is involved, it may not work in Windows Server 2012 but it should not damage your data and you can still connect these hard disks back to original server.
However, backup important files is always recommended.
