Migrate from iPhoto to Aperature...

Hello,
I've been shooting (digitally) wildlife & nature photography for roughly the past 5 years. I started managing all my photos in iPhoto but I'm looking to migrate to Aperature. But, I'm wondering if there's any sort of way to migrate settings set in iPhoto into Aperature? For example, my image ratings, keywords, etc. As I have 5+ years worth of images all organized in iPhoto, I'm hoping I wouldn't have to start from scratch moving into Aperature (especially consider how tightly integrated most Apple software is).
Any advice from anyone on this...?
Thanks,
Kristin.

Ok, checked it out and it didn't have any information in regards to migrating images from iPhoto into Aperture and whether or not it imports keywords/rankings that were originally assigned in iPhoto.
Does anyone else have any information on this?
Basically, I'm trying to decide between Aperture and Lightroom and I know Lightroom won't import iPhoto keywords, etc. so I'm really hoping Aperture will (as, with over 15,000 tagged/ranked images, it would be a huge job to redo it all from scratch).
Thanks,
Kristin.

  • How to add photos taken in iOS 8 to albums migrated from iPhoto

Does anyone know how to add photos taken in iOS 8 to albums migrated from iPhoto, or do I have to set up another set of albums?

Albums that you synced from a computer can't be amended in the Photos app, the only way to add (or remove) photos to those albums is to do it on your Mac and resync.

  • Migrating from iPhoto 08 (v7.1.5) to iPhoto 11 (v9.3)

    Greetings iPhoto gurus,
I currently run iPhoto 08 (v7.1.5) and I have an extensive library of pictures, albums and slideshows. I'm considering upgrading to iPhoto 11, but will only do so if it will retain and migrate all my current stuff. In the process of upgrading, will the resulting iPhoto 11 library contain all the slideshows, albums and metadata (particularly the Description field which I have made extensive use of and do not fancy retyping for several hundred piccies) be migrated?
I also have the latest version of Aperture (v3.3) which I have only just started to use. What prompted this query is that I now see that Aperture v3.3. and iPhoto 11 v9.3 can share the same libraries without exporting/importing, which is obviously appealling to me.
My ultimate nirvana is being able to merge the migrated iPhoto 11 library with my current Aperture library so that I can have one database with all my legacy pictures, slideshows and metadata alongside the new stuff that I have been populating since procuring Aperture.
    Can anyone advise on:
    1) Will migrating from iPhoto 08 to iPhoto 11, as described above, work?
    2) Will I be able to merge the resulting iPhoto 11 library with the Aperture 3.3 library?
    Many thanks in anticipation.
    Simon.

Thanks - time machine already up and running. I will also duplicate library and copy that to external drive.
I tested the process of migration on my Macbook (where I have just a few test pictures - my main library is on my iMac). It all seemed to migrate fine. I then merged library with Aperture and everything seemed to transfer across - including Descriptions nicely migrating to Caption metadata. Quite impressed.
I am able to switch between iPhoto and Aperture library with ease in both applications. Nice!
Will try it for real later in the week and report back success or issues for the benefit of any other user who is contemplating the same thing.
    Cheers all,
    Simon.

  • Missing photos after migration from iPhoto to Photos

Last week I upgraded my desktop MacPro from OS 10.9.latest to OS 10.10.3. When I first opened Photos, it did the migration from iPhotos without apparent problem. But I have noticed that many (hundreds at least) of the photos from my pre-migration iPhoto library are now not in Photos. I mounted my pre-upgrade backup drive on a laptop running OS 10.9.latest, and can find specific missing photos OK on the backup. But if I search the main drive on my desktop Mac, for example for "P1440608", I get no results. I have tried rebuilding the Photos library with no change - the missing photos are still missing.
One option is to erase my MacPro main drive and restore from the backup drive to OS 10.9.latest. This should put me back to where I was. Is there a viable alternative? Please note that my iPhoto version was 8.1.2. It will not open in OS 10.10.3, and the App Store will not let me upgrade to the most recent version. I do have Time Machine plus external bootable (SuperDuper) backup of the desktop MacPro, plus that laptop running OS 10.9.latest as resources available.

Apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
    Fix #1
1 - launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
2 - run Option #4 to rebuild the database.
    Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
1 - download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
2 - click on the Add Library button and select the library you want to add in the selection window..
3 - Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the Library ➙ Rebuild Library menu option.
4 - In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
5 - Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments but not books, calendars or slideshows. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

  • How do I continue a migration from iPhoto to Photos that was interrupted part way through?

I began a VERY large migration (40k+ photos) from iPhoto (v9.6.1) to Photos on an external hard drive.  I have a MacBook Pro with Yosemite 10.10.3 that is connected to a network that has a Synology network drive.  The iPhoto library is on that drive and I was wanting to create the Photos library also on the drive.
The process was very slow and has taken days, but that is expected and it was definitely making progress (I could see the files being added over time). Unfortunately, the transfer was interrupted part way through (my kid closed my laptop, which disconnected it from the network). I tried to start it over with the partially created Photos library folder as the destination, hoping that it would pick up where it left off.  It worked until it reached the same files that were previously created. The migration stopped at that point, and the following error appeared: "Photos was unable to make a copy of your library before preparing it. There were file system or hardware issues…”  I assume the inability to overwrite previous files with the same names was the case of the "file system or hardware issues."
Is there any way to either continue the migration from where I left off, or maybe even manually move the rest of the files over? Or do I have to wipe out the entire partially migrated Photos library and start over?

You probably will have to start over
And I suspect that you are incorrect - as far as I know NO NAS is formatted Mac OS extended - A NAS is basically a Linux computer with no display or keyboard that uses a Linux format drive - a headless computer
Unless you have a directly connected drive correctly formatted you are cgoing to continue to have issues - your photos and your choice what risk you put them at but you are treading in very dangerous water with you set up - is it documented not to work and similar set ups have been reported here hundreds of times as causing major problems and losing lots of stuff

  • Migration from iPhoto '08 to Photos

    Hi,
    2 main questions:
migration from iPoto '08 to Photos
    preservation of printed media
    Information:
Hardware: MacBook Pro (Fall 2008, Early 2009) 15-inch with 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo Processor a and 2GB memory
OS: Mac OSX Leopard (v 10.5.8)
Currently I am still using my outdated MacBook Pro with Leopard running on it. Since I have troubles with ordering Printed Apple Photobooks out of iPhoto. It is not supported anylonger. And since I have no new updates and new software, I decided to upgrade. Both hardware and sotware.
I decided to upgrade to the latest OS (Yosemite) which should be supported by Apple.
So I ordered a new SSD to replace the hard disk and 8GB to replace my memory. With these new pieces it should run Yosemite easily.
I also orderded a license and DVD for Snow Leopard.  I will install Snow Leopard on my SSD, to have a clean install. Then I will update to the latest possible version of Snow Leopard via Software Update. Afterwards I will upgrade to Yosemite via the Mac Store.
So I know how to handle the OS upgrade. But what about my iPhoto migration...
This is quite some old version: iPhoto '08 (v7.x). Offcourse I will backup my complete iPhoto Libarary before doing anything.
But should I only import my '08 Library when I have Yosemite running (I believe iPhoto '11 is included)? And then
Or will this not work? Do I need to import my '08 Library with an extra first step: import it in iPhoto when I have Snow Leopard running, then in iPhoto in Yosemite, and then in Photos in Yosemite?
And what about my Printed Photobooks I already created. Will they still be present in Photos? I spend a lot (and I mean a lot) of time creating some photobooks in iPhoto '08. I do not want to loose them in Photos. I want to order them at Apple, but iPhoto '08 won't let me. I can not find a minimum version of iPhoto required by Apple to order printed products. Perhaps I can still order with iPhoto '11?
    Thanks in advance,
    Sander Fiers

To move an iPhoto Library to a new machine:
Link the two Macs together: there are several ways to do this: Wireless Network, Firewire Target Disk Mode, Ethernet, or even just copy the Library to an external HD and then on to the new machine...
But however you do choose to link the two machines...
Simply copy the iPhoto Library from the Pictures Folder on the old Machine to the Pictures Folder on the new Machine.
    Then launch iPhoto. That's it.
This moves photos, events, albums, books, keywords, slideshows and everything else.

  • Migration from iPhoto to Aperture

    Hello,
I just moved from iPhoto to Aperture. I did the migration described here : http://www.apple.com/aperture/iphoto-to-aperture/how.html but it failed at the last step.
I choosed “Consolidate Masters for Library” and I get this error message (sorry it's in French).
Are you able to help me ?
    Thanks,
    Wistiti

It appears that the error you are getting is telling you that the selection does not have any referenced masters. This can only mean that when you imported your iPhoto library into Aperture you choose to move or copy the masters into aperture.
As a test go to the Library tab of the Inspector, select the Photos icon near the top of the list.  Go to the right hand side of the window. Click the dark magnifying glass:
Select the Add Rule pulldown and add File Status to the filter. Select Managed this will show you all the images in the library that are managed. You can also select Referenced to see all the images that are referenced.
If the files are already managed you don't need to do anything else.

  • IPhoto migration from iPhoto 6 to 9 problem

I am upgrading from an old iMac running Tiger to a new Mac currently running Maverick.  I went to transfer over a large photo collection in iPhoto.  My previous version of iPhoto was 6.0.6.  The new version is 9.5.1.  Since my old mac was too old for Migration Assistant, I attempted to transfer all my photos (via the iPhoto library) via an external hard drive.  I copied the library to the iPhoto and as expected the library needed to be updated with iPhoto Library Upgrader.  However, about 90 percent of the way through the upgrade, I received messages that "The volume for <file name> cannot be found.  I was given three options: cancel (results in cycling through missing files names--about 100 and then back through again, but never out); Find Photo (goes to Finder window) or Try again which simply comes back to the same screen).  While in this stage, I can't access any of the iPhoto controls, including Preferences.  From what I've read here, I suspect this are certain images which are referenced and separate from iPhoto library which are not linked, but at this point, I haven't seen a single photo from the transfer and am not sure what to do next.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks, Chris

From what I've read here, I suspect this are certain images which are referenced and separate from iPhoto library which are not linked
    That's it exactly.
There really is no good way forward now. If you still have the other machine I would rebuild the v6 library there - get it working first. Then copy the repaired version over.

  • Migrating from iPhoto 5 to iPhoto '11

I have experienced many problems moving from an iMac G5 PowerPC to a new iMac Intel, particularly in relation to iPhoto where I was using iPhoto 5 (Vn 5.0.4) on my old machine and iPhoto 11 (Vn9.1.1) on the new.
Having decided against using  Migration Assistant  I  tried several of the workarounds on various message boards. However whilst I was able to import my 26,000 images into my new Mac, all titling (i.e. names) on them disappeared in the transfer.
I found a way around the problem. My suggestion is  to EXPORT  each of the album folders in turn from iPhoto 5 to an external hard drive (EHD) on which you have created a new folder with the same name as the album you are exporting. So if your iPhoto album is called "Greek Holiday" create a folder with that same name on your EHD.  Then in iPhoto 5 go to Share > Export Photos. In the window that comes up, keep Format as Original, check Full Size Images and  Use Title and also check Use Extension. (Ensure that every image has a title i.e. the 'name' section in info is not blank, before you start or this won't work!) Click Export and choose the newly created folder on the external hard drive.
Once that is done, step two is to disconnect the external hard drive  from the old iMac and connect it to the new one. Open iPhoto in the new machine and go to File > Import To Library. Select the appropriate file on the external hard drive and iPhoto imports the images and, more importantly, their titles!
It is a slow process and may take a few hours but far better than renaming 26,000 images! Note that  neither 'star rating' data nor original camera file name (e.g. image XXX) is transferred this way but everything else is including camera data.
I also had problems moving my music from iTunes 7 to the newer iTunes 10. First time I moved all the relevant files from the old machine to the new one, I discovered that my album sleeve images didn't come with them. The simple answer to this is to open the old  iTunes and go to   > Advanced > Consolidate Library before transferring all the relevant files to the new machine, ideally via an external hard drive.
Having been a Mac user for over twenty five years (though still not a 'Techie"!) I feel the the company has not managed the move from older Power PC machines to Intel machines as well as it might have done. Migration Assistant usually brings across lots of files which just won't work with the Intel processor and indeed which may even hinder its operation, as my wife discovered when I used it on hers. Far better to have a clean install!

  • Graceful way to migrate from iPhoto to Aperture -- w/o losing metadata?

Does anyone have advice on migrating an iPhoto library into Aperture without losing some critical metadata? I'm specifically concerned about two things:
    1. "Original" and "Modified" versions: I shoot RAW but put quite a bit of work into post-processing photos (e.g., white balance correction, cropping, etc.) It's very important to me that I don't lose the connection between original and modified versions of files. Additionally, when I browse an event, I would like to be able to see the "modified" version of files that I have edited and "original" version of files that I have not -- just like in iPhoto. My efforts to date have resulted in either A) losing original versions of all modified photos or B) creating an Aperture project with duplicate original and modified copies of each iPhoto photo.
    2. "Hidden" photos. The "hide/unhide" feature is the best tool iPhoto provides for sorting "good" pictures from "bad" in a shot, so I have used it extensively. I would like to not lose this information when migrating to Aperture (even if it takes a different form -- maybe "reject"?), and it would certainly be nice to be able to optionally either browse all photos in a shot or only those that were not hidden when in iPhoto.
    Is there any hope?
(Context: I've been using iPhoto for years, but I really like Aperture's interface and photo tuning/editing options. I've considered migrating a number of times and have always turned back because of how much information I'd lose in the migration. Has anyone managed to crack the code... or has Apple finally made this transition doable?)

I do have a related question and problems. Any input would be greatly appreciated
I am in the process of migrating my iPhoto pictures over to Aperture. Because I have close to 100k pictures and short clips, I can not import my entire 500 GB library at once because I don't have enough hard drive space to support both iPhoto and Aperture libraries at the same time. I also thought it might make sense to not have one gigantic library. Also I would like to have my old photos separated by years, and I don't know if Aperture would do this if I imported the entire iPhoto library (which does only separate them by events) at once. So it appears to me that the only import method that would work (please correct me if this is wrong) would be to open the "Masters" directory of iPhoto in the Finder, and drag and drop each year's directory into the "Projects/Library" panel in Aperture. Note that I do not want any editing information preserved from iPhoto, so using the Masters seems to be the most space efficient thing. So far so good but there appear to be at least two big snags. Firstly the yellow projects folders within each blue years folder in Aperture are not in chronological but in alphabetical order and I can't find out how to fix this. Secondly (and much more problematically) the dates on many old photos have been altered in an apparent random manner during the import into Aperture! Therefore they do appear in the wrong locations in my events library, according to the altered date. There are many too many photos that have been changed to undo this manually (I estimate it would take several weeks to do this).
But how and why could this have happened in the first place?
I also noticed that even when I change the dates of the Aperture masters to the true ones (by comparing to the masters in iPhoto), they still remain in the same wrong location in my Projects/Events library, according to the date originally (and falsely) assigned by Aperture.
There surely has to be a way to import photos into Aperture without ruining their date stamp?
Thanks in advance for your help!

  • Migration from iPhoto to Lightroom 3 for Apple OS X 10.6

    Dear all
This question refers to the Apple version of Lightroom.
Do you know any way of migrating all RAW, tiff, jpg, etc. files from iPhoto to Lightroom 3beta while conserving the original format? Ideally the migration should replicate also the iPhoto folders in Lightroom folders, so that I don't have to recreate the order pre-existing in iPhoto.
    Many thanks
    Mõmmibeebi

Not correct at all - please see my previous response to a similar post.
Although you may want to check my work - I don't know a thing about iPhoto - I'm assuming the iPhoto directory structure is also a disk directory structure, like Aperture can be - is that correct? Or is it a figment of iPhoto's imagination, so to speak - if so, disregard everything I said in this post and the other one too.

  • "photo" messed up my events when migrating from iPhoto

I have over 13,000 photos. When my photos were moved from IPHOTO to the new PHOTO every photo is in another place, different album, I can not locate any photo I need.  Is there a way to get back the "events", names, titles, etc I had? Any suggestions?

After  I installed the last Apple upgrade, which was the "Photos": when I opened photos it "migrated" my photos from iPhoto to photo.
If you prefer, you can still use iPhoto. It will not have been removed from your Mac, just from the Dock. Try to launch it from the applications folder. It will work if you have already updated to the current version iPhoto 9.6.1.
Just confirm, that you want o open iPhoto, when prompted.
when I go to an "album" which should have a say, 100 photos there are 2 or none,
Are your albums smart albums, based on events?  They will not work any longer, because there are no events.
seems to be sorting by date because the photos have nothing to do with each other, my cat is with museum photos.
Then you are probably looking at the moments and not your albums. The Moments in the "Photos" view will group the photos by location and date. If there are no location data, they will only be sorted by date.

  • Migrating from iPhoto to Lightroom...

    Hello,
I've now reach 5-years/15,000 images of wildlife/nature photography. iPhoto just no longer cuts it at this size. I'm on the fence between Lightroom and Aperture but right now the selling point for Aperture over Lightroom is that fact that I can migrate my rankings and tags from iPhoto into Aperture, while I don't think this is possible (ie. migrating them into Lightroom). Does anyone have any advice (other than starting from scratch and re-ranking/re-tagging the last 5-years worth of shoots)?
    Thanks,
    Kristin.

Rather than importing all your iPhoto files to Aperture, I'd caution you to simply reference the odd folder or two for each demo program, and then perhaps experiment with importing iPhoto masters (rather than the reference approach) for Aperture. It's not clear whether Lightroom can read Aperture files, or vice versa. So before doing an entire conversion to either one, why not play with both demos with a (very limited) subset of your photos? This way you can examine exactly what happens without being locked into a particular solution.
(BTW there is an excellent video about Aperture and iPhoto somewhere in the Apple site -- they suggest managing iPhoto images by reference rather than by importing the masters. See it and you'll understand the issues.)
FWIW I did try both and ended up with Lightroom. Aperture has a beautiful, clean design and more intuitive file management. Lightroom has a cluttered, modular design with less fully featured file management but exceptionally intuitive image editing capabilities. Also Lightroom runs like greased lightening by comparison to Aperture, which starts to beachball and stutter once you're on your third slider adjustment. Also, Aperture quits frequently -- in fact, I installed it on two machines, and in both cases it crashed immediately after opening it!
Lightroom is much more stable and has never crashed for me, and I'm banging around on it quite compulsively these days!
That said, while I have a 10,000 iPhoto image file I never bother tagging and rating and so on -- I just did the file folder thing. So choosing one app over another, for me, was not a function of my prior investment in the database. That said, if I HAD taken the time to tag and rank within iPhoto, I'd be absolutely committed to Aperture rather than Lightroom! That is a LOT of time invested, and Aperture is a great program.
One thing is certain: Aperture likes a speedy system. I tried it on my MacBook Pro and it was MUCH faster than on my 1.87 core duo Mini. But it was still not the most stable application on the block -- not by a long shot. Also while I loved the Zen-like simplicity of the interface, I found it Zen-like in other ways too -- as in "inscrutable." Besides being very complex (NOT a program to just start fooling around with, imho, unless you don't mind things like loupe tools that simply will NOT go away!) it also features extremely tiny and incomprehensible icons. You can click on them a dozen times and still not remember what they are just by looking at them. Kind of like "is that a spider? Or maybe a centipede?"
I really wanted to love Aperture, I did. Because I use Lightroom I still have to import albums into iPhoto to view them on Apple TV, for example, whereas Aperture albums can simply be browsed right within iPhoto and also selected for play on Apple TV. Plus I am an unapologetic Apple fangirl and want to paper my walls with Apple -- and only Apple -- software! But I could not get over the instability of Aperture.
As for Lightroom, well in many ways you already know how to use it. It is an exercise in simplicity and intuitiveness. You can start fooling around with it right away without your head starting to hurt!
Tough decision. Bottom line: try out Aperture (on your quad core 3 gig MacPro with a honkin graphics card!) and see what you think. Then try Lightroom. Feed each program just a small set of photos, just to keep things simple and not lock yourself into either until you decide.
Let us know what you decide to do!
