Migrate from Tiger (10.4) server to Lion server

I have a Tiger (10.4) server that I would like to retire and upgrade to a Lion server. Does anyone know of any documentation on how I can migrate user data and mail to the new Lion server?

Apple's official documentation is available here http://www.apple.com/macosx/server/resources/documentation.html the first choice is specifically about migrating.
You might also find this article useful, see http://www.macresearch.org/tutorial-backup-your-open-directory-server-using-laun chd and also my previous post on a similar topic which you can read here https://discussions.apple.com/message/16430995#16430995

How long should it take a well-qualified server admin to migrate from Tiger to Lion...
For a small company, if the Tiger server is running on a G4 Tower:
    -Roughly 500GB in user files
-Data resides on old-school ATA drives
    -OD Master - Kerberized
    -AFP
    -Mobile Homes
    -DHCP
    -DNS (for 2 domains)
    -FTP
    -iChat
    -Mail (non SSL)
    -NetBoot
    -Print Server
    -SWUPD
    -VPN
    -Hosting website using MySQL
    -User & Computer Management
    Considerations/Hurdles/Challenges:
-Tossing old G4 into garbage, upgrading Mini client to Snow Leopard, adding Lion iMac client to the LAN
-Fresh OS installs on the Mini and iMac
-Upgrading from CAT5 to CATE on the LAN (not it the walls - just loose cables)
-All new hardware must be sourced out (take some time to price compare)
-Must find a way to transfer data from ATA drives to SATA drives or Lion Server
-Company must not have any email downtime (MX Records to be modified on DNS Providers site)
-Servers hostname goes from "companyserver.company.com" to "server.company.com"
    -ISP blocks some SMTP ports
-DNS Provider doesn't support TSL/SSL SMTP
-Implementing a switch into the network
-Implementing a new router (for firewall and NAT) from ISP
    Upgrading to Lion Mini Server
    -All the same services
    -Using SSL
-Implementing Mobile Device Enrolment and Deployment
That should just about cover it. I'll add any other details/hurdles as they come to mind.
Can you guys give me your best guesstimate as to how many hours you think this job should take? I'd appreciate any feedback as to how long you guys think it'd take you to make this transition. I'm trying to plan, and we're going to be down-and-out, the boss NEEDS to know for how long.!
    Thanks in advance guys!

It's about a gigabyte, so if you have a slow connection, it might take some time.
But - you shouldn't be getting the beach ball - that's a different thing.
Can you do open Activity Monitor, or is it stuck completely?

  • HT4889 Is it possible to migrate from Tiger to Mountain Lion????

It seems that the Mountain Lion migration assistant on a MacBook Air does not see an attached iBook G4 via thunderbolt/firewire as valid volume. For Lion there is an explanation, that it only works via Firewire. What about Mountain Lion? I think the migration assistant should be able to migrate from any ancient OS X version...

No, you cannot migrate directly from Tiger to Mountain Lion as described in HT4889 - Setup Assistant and Migration Assistant are both broken in 10.8.2 and the procedure in HT4889 does not work.
What you can do is either upgrade your iBook G4 to Leopard and then migrate from Leopard to Mountain Lion, or migrate from Tiger to another machine running Leopard/Snow Leopard/Lion and then to your new machine running Mountain Lion.
In theory it is still possible to purchase OS X Leopard directly from Apple as a special order if you call them or something like that. Don't pay $200 to scammers on eBay, please!!
The nice thing about using Setup Assistant or Migration Assistant is that it really seems to do a good job of migrating contacts/calendar/email and everything else, although obviously you will need to replace all of your old PowerPC apps.

  • Upgrade from Snow Leopard Server to Lion Server hangs at configuring services...

I am running the Mac mini with snow leopard server 2.53 ghz 2GB of ram, 2x500GB hard drives, and have followed through the process to install Lion Server. The installation appears to be hung at the Configuring Services section of the setup process. I have left it for a couple of hours and nothing has progressed.
Should I leave it longer, hoping that it will work through the process (if in fact it is working through something)?
How long should this normally take?
As this is my work server, hosting mail, web, FTP, and file sharing, it is rather important to get it up and running as quickly as possible.
Any thoughts on how I can get it moving?
Hard power off of the Mac Mini reboots the machine, then proceeds back to the setup page, and then hangs on the same Configuring Services.
Any assistance would be much appreciated.
    Thanks.

    Lion Server Upgraders,
    beware and proceed with caution.
Apple web site is naively optimistic on the upgrade process:
"To upgrade your Mac to OS X Lion, you don’t need to drive to a store, bring home a box, and install a bunch of discs. All you do is click the Mac App Store icon, buy Lion for $29.99, and your Mac does the rest. Just make sure you have what you need to download Lion to your Mac."
And then has a 3 step process...
    This is completely miss leading.
    Read this document first: http://manuals.info.apple.com/en_US/lion_server_upgrading_migrating.pdf
It will make it readily apparent that moving from Snow Leopard Server to Lion is not going to be simple.
Having done this twice now.. I have found that:
    1. Open Directory migration is a weak point. Lion & Snow Leopard Open Directory are not compatible, so if you have masters & replica then expect trouble. I have an unresolved issue trying to get a simple Lion Server to Lion Server Open Directory replica up and running. This compatibility seems to also cause migration to fail, as I found that all my local User/Groups transferred ok but non of the /127.0.0.1/LDAPv3 (Open Directory) ones did. This is a very important item, as all the mail accounts in dovecot use LDAP generated UID, so you have to be careful that you do not loose mail accounts.
    2. Mail - your mail aliases will not transferred, so you will need to reapply the aliases.
    3. Web Server Setup - This broke, under migration as I gather the entire Web serving tree has changed. In particular I had "Snow Leopard" Web Mail (which is based on Squirel) on my "Snow Leopard" Server and this is now dead...
    4. Digital Certificates - I found that the valid (ie signed by trusted CA's) did not get migrated, so I had to re-imported my Digital Certificates. If you have paid for third party CA certificates then make sure you have got these copied somewhere, as if you loose them then you will likely need to go to your provider and get a certificate revocation and new certificate, which will cost you money!
    Cheers,
    Zebity.

  • Migration from Crystal Enterprise 10 to SAP Crystal Server 2011

    Hi all,
We are currently using Crystal Enterprise 10 to schedule and view our reports and the designer is Crystal Reports 10 .
we are planning to migrate to SAP Crystal Server 2011 with Crystal Reports 2011 as the designer. Can we do this migration directly or do we need to do the migration to an intermediate version before going to SAP Crystal Server 2011.
    Regards,
    Sreekanth S S

    1. So in this case, I need to migrate from Crystal Enterprise 10 to Crystal Reports Server XI R2/Crystal Reports Server 2008 or more using import wizard Then I will need to migrate from Crystal Reports Server XI R2/Crystal Reports Server 2008 to SAP Crystal Server 2011 using Upgrade Manager tool. Is my inference correct?
That is correct. For XI R2, it would be XI R2 SP2 minimum. And you need to have a live installation of XI R2 SP2 as SAP does not have it in archieve download area.
2.What is the potential risk if we try to migrate from Crystal Enterprise 10 to SAP Crystal Server 2011 using upgrade manager tool?
I am not sure if that will work with success, If the reports migrated from CE10 do not work in CRS2011, it would be unsupported. You can however try it anyways.
3.Can we open the reports developed using Crystal Reports 10 designer in Crystal Reports 2011 designer? .This is for another requirement of us where we have to just migrate the reports alone .
Yes you can do that. Try opening and running them in CR2011, they should work but some of them can also result in some errors here and their, this is more specific to report design and what kind of grouping\ filtering\formulas you use.

This is an error message from Numbers trying to open password protect Excel files, which it cannot do. Assuming you have Excel, use Excel to open it.

  • How to use webmail address book on Mac Mini Server with Lion Server.

I have a Mac Mini Server with Lion Server installed; the webmail is setup and working but I can not get the address book to work.
I have followed an instruction from this website on how to activate the address book icon in webmail but can not add any addresses.  Is there something that needs to be activatied before it will work?

No, I didn't solve the problem. The monitor still goes to sleep with WIndows but not with my Mac Mini. About 8 months ago I basically wore out the power switch on my monitor so I bought a wireless power switch to shut it off at the outlet. The VX2835wm monitor itself is now starting to fail as well-- a couple of times it's gone through a weird sequence of flashing screen colors on power up and ended up in an overscan mode (that took me for ever to figure out how to fix). I have decided to replace my VX2835wm with a Dell u2412m once it fails for good partly because I really want to keep the 16:10 resolution (very hard to find these days) and partly because I want to see if a different make of monitor will go to sleep properly based upon my Mac Mini power down settings.

  • Migrate 10.4.11 Server to Lion Server

    Hi,
We have an older G5 sever running 10.4.11. It was setup quite a while ago, and I don't do IT consistently, so it might take a while to 'refresh' the mind on what was initially done when it was first setup.
But we just purchased a new Mac Mini server running 10.7.x. I found a PDF about Upgrading & Migrating to 10.7 and it specifically states 'The upgrade or migration to Lion Server from a v10.5 PowerPC is not supported.'
So I'm just wondering if anyone could give any advice or tips on how to get the new server setup to match our existing server with the least amount of setup time involved (we're pretty busy at the moment). I guess eyeballing it by looking at each side-by-side would be a worst-case scenario, but I can't imagine that would go all too smoothly.
Our usage was pretty limited, so I'm hoping this will ease the process. Here's the things I can think of off the top of my head that we will need to setup the same as current:
    - User accounts, passwords, groups, permissions (we have less than 10 users).
    - Firewall setup (we've made a lot of tweaks over the years to get everything to work with our network/router).
    - VPN
    - Share Points (we currently have an internal RAID 1 file-serving drive that will be migrating to an external Thunderbolt RAID 5 array. We just want to make sure all Share Points, ACLs & permissions don't get messed up in the transfer).
    Thanks for any help!

To the extent that you have old PowerPC software that requires Rosetta, Rosetta is no longer included with Lion.  The reason these applications do not work in Lion Server is that they were written for the older PowerPC CPU that all Macs used up to 2006 (in your case the G5).  When Apple made its transition to the Intel CPU, they licensed software that they included in all versions of OS X (from Tiger to Leopard and optionally, Snow Leopard) called Rosetta.
Rosetta miraculously allows PowerPC applications to work on the Intel processor transparently; you do not know it is even present.
The problem is that after 6 years of the transition, Apple's license to use the underlying software expired for OS X Lion and all version thereafter (and it is doubtful that the current owner of the software, IBM, would relicense it, even if Apple were inclined to do so).
So for those of use that need to run Lion, I have offered the option to install Snow Leopard (with Rosetta) into Parallels 7:

  • Problem migrating from 10.5 to 10.6 mail server: cvt_cyrusdb does not exist!

    The problem
I am migrating a mail server from 10.5 to 10.6 (as the first step to moving to 10.8).
I'm trying to migrate mail from Cyrus to Dovecot, using the command migrate_mail_data.pl but I keep getting the error:
Error: cvt_cyrusdb does not exist in: .
    Background
An example of how to use the command is at:
    http://www.opensource.apple.com/source/dovecot/dovecot-239/dovecot.Config/migrat e_mail_data.pl
    Example: migrate_mail_data.pl --cyrusBin "/Volumes/Tiger/usr/bin/cyrus/bin" --database "/Volumes/Tiger/var/imap" --sourceSpool "/Volumes/Tiger/var/spool/imap" --targetSpool "/Library/Server/Mail/Data/mail "
    So, the syntax is:
sudo [location of migrate_mail_data.pl command] --moveMail 0 --cyrusbin "[location of cvt_cyrusdb binary]" -- database "[location of original mail database] "--sourceSpool "[location of original spool files]" --targetSpool "[location of destination files]"
    Locating my files
    Locate all of my files:
    sudo find / -name migrate_mail_data.pl
    /usr/libexec/dovecot/migrate_mail_data.pl
    sudo find / -name cvt_cyrusdb
    /usr/bin/cyrus/bin/cvt_cyrusdb
--database files are at the default location:
    /private/var/imap
--sourceSpool files are at the default location:
    /private/var/spool/imap
    --targetSpool is set for:
    "Volumes/Iomega1TB/121014/121005Dovecot/mail"
    What I've tried
So, I've tried the following commands (and many other variations!):
    sudo /usr/libexec/dovecot/migrate_mail_data.pl --moveMail 0 --cyrusbin "/usr/bin/cyrus/bin" -- database "/var/imap" --sourceSpool "/var/spool/imap" --targetSpool "Volumes/Iomega1TB/121014/121005Dovecot/mail"
    sudo /usr/libexec/dovecot/migrate_mail_data.pl --moveMail 0 --cyrusbin "/usr/bin/cyrus/bin/" -- database "/var/imap/" --sourceSpool "/var/spool/imap/" --targetSpool "Volumes/Iomega1TB/121014/121005Dovecot/mail/"
    sudo /usr/libexec/dovecot/migrate_mail_data.pl --moveMail 0 --cyrusbin /usr/bin/cyrus/bin/ -- database /var/imap/ --sourceSpool /var/spool/imap/ --targetSpool "Volumes/Iomega1TB/121014/121005Dovecot/mail/"
    sudo /usr/libexec/dovecot/migrate_mail_data.pl --moveMail 0 --cyrusbin /usr/bin/cyrus/bin -- database /var/imap --sourceSpool /var/spool/imap --targetSpool "Volumes/Iomega1TB/121014/121005Dovecot/mail/"
All give me the same error:
Error: cvt_cyrusdb does not exist in: .
    Interpretation
The error message tells me (perhaps I'm misunderstanding!) that there is a problem with this part of the command:
    --cyrusbin "/usr/bin/cyrus/bin"
because that's what defines the path to  cvt_cyrusdb
But 'Find' has told me the location of that cvt_cyrusdb command and I can see it in the GUI, too!
    Help!
    What am I doing wrong?
    With thanks in anticipation,
    Kevin

    Thanks for your advice, MrHoffman.
I was trying to avoid taking the mail server down for more than a few minutes so wanted to:
    a. clone and migrate the server configuration to the new machine
    b. take server offline
    c. copy data to new machine and convert it from Cyrus to Dovecot
    d. take server online
Due to the problem with converting the data, it looks like my only option will be to take the mail server down for some hours while I perform all of those operations.
I was really hoping that there might be a simple answer to invoking the cvt_cyrusdb command!
Can anyone tell me how I might fix that?
    Kevin

  • From Tiger to Leopard (on to Lion)

Leaving the PBG4 Ti for MBA. Can't move all the applications to Lion from Tiger so I upgraded to 10.5.1 using Archive and Install (saving previous system).
Have repaired Permissions using Disk Utility 11.0 (252).
Installed Combo update 10.5.8 after repairing 10.5.1 (initial install).
Preferences/Print&Fax has dropped all my printers. I can find the printer files in /Users/username/Library/Printers and all the apps for each printer is shown. Put any print dialogue box lists no printers.
Where do I need to move these files to be able to use them.
Also, Yojimbo 1.5.2 has lost all the data contained within each entry. Not sure how to solve this issue.
Thanks for all solutions, ideas, pointers and links.

    Thanks Kappy,
I'm trying to avoid the long (sometimes confusing) process of adding printers that are wired, networked and wifi. Since I know where the existing printer apps are, and they seem to be in the correct place (current user/library/printers) I'm puzzled why the don't show up in preferences or any printer dialogue.
The issue with Yojimbo is a much sticker and more troubling issue. Lots of data that I can't re-enter.

  • Wiki migration from 10.6.8 to 10.10 Server 4 no data loaded

I'm trying to migrate wiki from an old OSX Server 10.6.8 to a brand new installation of 10.10.1 with Server App ver 4.
I followed the article at http://krypted.com/mac-os-x/setup-os-x-yosemite-server-as-a-wiki-server/
    I used the migration method:
    1) copy the /Library/Collaboration folder to Yosemite Server ~/Desktop/Collaboration
    2) changed owner to _teamserver of the copied folder
    3) started wiki service
    4) created a new wiki
    5) configure accounts to access LDAP of the old server
    6) run sudo wikiadmin migrate -r ~/Desktop/Collaboration
No wiki were created. The log file shows that no users and groups found.

    Please help me

I have a bad 10.8 server, and what I did to rescue my WIKI
    1- Listed users on old wiki server " dscacheutil -q user | grep -A 3 -B 2 -e uid:\ 5'[0-9][0-9]'    ", I dont use open directory
2- Create an new 1.8.5 server
3- Create users on new server (keep an eye on order of creation ID is more important than username)
4- Turned on Wiki *Important starts up service for 1st time
5- Then followed these instuctions on:  http://support.apple.com/en-us/HT5585
    *Wiki worked
6 -Then Upgraded form 10-8-5 to Yosemithe server
    ALL WORKS
*Note1: Apple's KB note has 10.6 to 8 migration which I did not use, try that before
*Note2: Clone new server each important step with CC or DiskUtil, step 5 trashed compleatly the server at one time, never knew what happened

  • Migrating from Seagate Info 7.5 to CR Server XI release 2 - HTML problem

We are currently trying to migrate from using Seagate Info 7.5 to using Crystal Reports Server XI Release 2, for our reports generation / scheduling.
We currently have a number of reports which are generated as HTML and saved to a network shared folder. These reports are viewed by internal users and are updated every 15 minutes. This works well at the moment as the users have a browser shortcut to the report page and hit refresh every now and then to see updated content.
However, in CR Server XI R2, there is no option to export HTML. So what would be the recommended workaround in this situation?
    Thanks in advance.

I wasn't aware that CR Server doesn't include OpenDocument, are you certain?
I think CR Server should have Crystal Reports URL Reporting though, called viewrpt.cwr. You can achieve pretty much the same with this, documentation is in our developer library:
    http://devlibrary.businessobjects.com/BusinessObjectsXIR2/en/devsuite.htm
Developer Library home > BusinessObjects Enterprise SDK > .NET developer guide and API reference > Viewing Reports and Documents using URLs > URL Reporting for Crystal Reports.

  • Disk Migration from Tiger-based iMac to Leopard MacBook

A friend just bought a new MacBook (with Leopard). She wants to do a disk migration from her G5 iMac (running Tiger). Any issues I should know about when doing this? Or should I upgrade the iMac to Leopard before doing the disk migration?
    Thanks for any input!

A Basic Guide for Migrating to Intel-Macs
If you are migrating a PowerPC system (G3, G4, or G5) to an Intel-Mac be careful what you migrate. Keep in mind that some items that may get transferred will not work on Intel machines and may end up causing your computer's operating system to malfunction.
Rosetta supports "software that runs on the PowerPC G3 or G4 processor that are built for Mac OS X". This excludes the items that are not universal binaries or simply will not work in Rosetta:
Classic Environment, and subsequently any Mac OS 9 or earlier applications
    Screensavers written for the PowerPC
    System Preference add-ons
    All Unsanity Haxies
    Browser and other plug-ins
    Contextual Menu Items
Applications which specifically require the PowerPC G5
    Kernel extensions
Java applications with JNI (PowerPC) libraries
See also What Can Be Translated by Rosetta.
In addition to the above you could also have problems with migrated cache files and/or cache files containing code that is incompatible.
If you migrate a user folder that contains any of these items, you may find that your Intel-Mac is malfunctioning. It would be wise to take care when migrating your systems from a PowerPC platform to an Intel-Mac platform to assure that you do not migrate these incompatible items.
If you have problems with applications not working, then completely uninstall said application and reinstall it from scratch. Take great care with Java applications and Java-based Peer-to-Peer applications. Many Java apps will not work on Intel-Macs as they are currently compiled. As of this time Limewire, Cabos, and Acquisition are available as universal binaries. Do not install browser plug-ins such as Flash or Shockwave from downloaded installers unless they are universal binaries. The version of OS X installed on your Intel-Mac comes with special compatible versions of Flash and Shockwave plug-ins for use with your browser.
The same problem will exist for any hardware drivers such as mouse software unless the drivers have been compiled as universal binaries. For third-party mice the current choices are USB Overdrive or SteerMouse. Contact the developer or manufacturer of your third-party mouse software to find out when a universal binary version will be available.
Also be careful with some backup utilities and third-party disk repair utilities. Disk Warrior 4.1, TechTool Pro 4.6.1, SuperDuper 2.5, and Drive Genius 2.0.2 work properly on Intel-Macs with Leopard. The same caution may apply to the many "maintenance" utilities that have not yet been converted to universal binaries. Leopard Cache Cleaner, Onyx, TinkerTool System, and Cocktail are now compatible with Leopard.
Before migrating or installing software on your Intel-Mac check MacFixit's Rosetta Compatibility Index.

Transferring data with Setup Assistant - Migration Assistant FAQ
Because Migration Assistant isn't the ideal way to migrate from PowerPC to Intel Macs, using Target Disk Mode or copying the critical contents to CD and DVD or an external hard drive will work better when moving from PowerPC to Intel Macs.
Basically the instructions you should follow are:
    1. Backup your data first. This is vitally important in case you make a mistake or there's some other problem.
    2. Connect a Firewire cable between your old Mac and your new Intel Mac.
    3. Startup your old Mac in Target Disk Mode.
    4. Startup your new Mac for the first time, go through the setup and registration screens, but do NOT migrate data over. Get to your desktop on the new Mac without migrating any new data over.
    4. Copy the following items from your old Mac to the new Mac:
In your /Home/ folder: Documents, Movies, Music, Pictures, and Sites folders.
    In your /Home/Library/ folder:
/Home/Library/Application Support/AddressBook (copy the whole folder)
/Home/Library/Application Support/iCal (copy the whole folder)
Also in /Home/Library/Application Support (copy whatever else you need including folders for any third-party applications)
    /Home/Library/Keychains (copy the whole folder)
    /Home/Library/Mail (copy the whole folder)
    /Home/Library/Preferences/ (copy the whole folder)
    /Home/Library/Calendars (copy the whole folder)
/Home /Library/iTunes (copy the whole folder)
/Home /Library/Safari (copy the whole folder)
    If you want cookies:
    /Home/Library/Cookies/Cookies.plist
    /Home/Library/Application Support/WebFoundation/HTTPCookies.plist
    For Entourage users:
Entourage is in /Home/Documents/Microsoft User Data
    Also in /Home/Library/Preferences/Microsoft
Credit goes to Macjack for this information.
If you need to transfer data for other applications please ask the vendor or ask in the Discussions where specific applications store their data.
    5. Once you have transferred what you need restart the new Mac and test to make sure the contents are there for each of the applications.

  • Not Printing from a Win 7 PC to Lion Server

I have a Mac Mini running OS X Lion Server. It has three printers connected and shared: A Samsung ML1550, a Canon MP510 and an Epson R1800.
All works well and I am able to print to the wired or wirelessly using my Macbook Pro.
The trouble starts when I try the same thing with my "Work" Dell Laptop, running Windows 7 64 bit and Bonjour for Windows.
Bonjour for Windows finds the printers and adds them to the Windows 7 Printer Control panel... all looks well.
Then, when you print from windows the print get spooled but vanishes into thin air.
It disappears from the WIndows print queue, but never appears on the print queue on the Mac Mini.
This happens for any of the three printers.
    Any ideas?
    Andy

No solution so far. I have taken to printing to a PDF file and then copying the PDF to the Mac Mini for printing, which is far from ideal.
Incidentally if  I connect the printers to an Apple Time Capsule USB port and try printing from Windows I get the same behaviour: it spools into thin air and never prints.

  • Migration from Tiger Client

I have a computer currently running OS X 10.4 (Client) that has been in use as our organization's file server. We recently purchased a copy of 10.5 Server, and I'm trying to figure out the best strategy to make the transition. Can anyone point me to any resources related to this?
For example, can I migrate all of the users and their passwords over? I think all of these users were just meant to be for AFP sharing on the current setup, but eventually I'd like to set up network home directories for them, give them permission to edit calendars, put their information into the database used by the Directory application, etc.
Thanks for any help you can provide to help me figure this out,
    Greg

Honestly, I'd consider erasing the HD and stating from scratch. You want your server to be reliable. Upgrading 10.4 client to 10.5 Server is probably just going to make your task harder - OS X server offers enough of a learning curve as it is. Any time you ask for help and mention that you upgrade from 10.4 client to 10.5 server you're just going to scare off folks who might otherwise offer advice on setting up 10.5 server. You'd most likely end up messing around with shares and permissions even if you do an upgrade. You'll also probably same time now and later by just erasing and starting over now.
    You can still look into

    for transferring users.
