Migrate installed Win 8.1 to a drive

I have Win 8.1 upgrade from Win 7 installed on an internal HD. I would like to migrate this Win 8.1 install and settings to a new ssd. Does Win 8.1 have this capability built in?
The is a upgrade from Win 7, all upgraded over the internet, no discs.

But with Windows 8.1, it works differently. it only transfers files, not settings.
So In my one view the best choice is to first backup the data and files.
Which you can use the Microsoft built in feature Microsoft Account.

Hello,
I have a problem with a lenovo T520. I installed win XP sp3 on its internal harddrive and it working fine. I have an external harddrive that I connect to the laptop via the eSata port. I want now to install additional win XP sp3 on the external drive to get a multiboot system.
But while setup, and after the first booting screen of windows, a blue screen of death appears with c0000218 unknown hardware error message.
I examined a little bit, and I saw that while win XP is booting it switch off the external harddrive (or reset the eSata port), and I think that what create the problem,
So is there a way to solve this problem.

I'm not sure if you can get it to boot normally out of the eSATA port. With XP on USB installs, you have to get it to load the USBSTOR driver early in boot.
You'd probably get better luck on the MSFN XP subforum with this question.

Not so long time ago I asked for help with reinstalling win 7 on my laptop.
The only option was actually to order recovery dvd what I did. Today it arrived.
Problem is or was that some of CDs or DVDs couldn't be read for some reason.
Now it doesn't want to boot from cd it says drive failed.
So what I did I pluged my spare external DVD drive and it booted from that.
However just after few seconds it tells me to set "1st recovery media" and opens the disc in laptop. Tried to insert the disc - nothing, like its not inserted, tried to disable laptops cd - nothing please help

Sorry kamil but this is not fully correct.
I can remember times when Toshiba released some notebook series without internal ODD (optical disk drive). It was able to recover such notebook using external ODD and recovery disk or recovery USB flash memory stick.
In your case the notebook boots up from the recovery disk because it appears a message saying please insert 1st recovery media and click continue. This means that data could be read from the recovery disk but obviously this is a wrong recovery disk or there is a problem with the inserted disk.

But if the recovery dvd isnt OK, then this method will not function.
In such case you would need to use a Microsoft installation disk or you could order a new recovery disk from Arvato service.

How do you Install Win XP using Boot Camp without use of an optical drive?

So I'm about at my wits end. I'm try to get Windows XP on my OS 10.5.5 MacBook Pro. I've run into what seems to be a bit of a dead in. Unfortunately my optical drive has gone stupid on me and won't allow me to get through the entire set-up. The Mac has know trouble seeing the Installation Disc. After my partition has been created and I click start Windows Installer, the computer reboots in a normal fashion up to when you get the apple with spinning progress wheel. At this point the screen goes black and I get a "-" blinking in the top right corner of the screen. I figure it's just trying to boot from Win Install disk but it just kinda sits there. So here's my question. Is there some way to boot this Windows Installation from anything else but the CD? I luckily have an image of the WinXP CD in about 5 formats. I'm going absolutely crazy because I had just Installed WinXP not more than an hour before I ran into this initial problem but wanted to change the WinXP partition to FAT 32 as opposed to the NTSC format I accidently used. I would really appriciate any help in my dark hour.

I really would like to help you and get your issue resolved in your dark hour as you said. I am afraid that I do not have good news for you. This is because the limitation put on by this entire process of installing Windows via boot camp.
The answer to you question to install windows from any other medium other than your built-in optical drive is a NO. This won't work since once Windows begins to install then it will not have all the drivers installed to recognize the external CD drive (USB/Firewire) and installation will halt.

Is the volume muted? Click on the volume icon in the system tray to see if it shows as muted. If that's the case, I know of a workaround to fix this because if you unmute the speakers now, the condition will come back when you reboot your computer. I don't know the exact steps off the top of my head at the moment as I'm not in front of my machine. Check this first and reply if muting was the problem and I will detail the steps needed to fix the problem.

I removed old hard drive and inserted new larger drive, installed win 7 on new drive (=c) inserted old drive (=f). Looked into mozilla file for bookmark folder to save or print. Not able to find old bookmarks. Help.

If you have the Media you can use it to create a bootable USB key via boot camp assistant.
It will create the usb and has the option of pre-downlading the drivers and bootcamp utilities for windows.
It is pretty much all automated and quite simple.

Installing Win 7 on Boot Camp won't install to the hard drive

Hey, I'm installing Windows 7 64-BIT onto my Mac,
Steps I've taken, logged onto an administrator account, ran boot camp assistant, selected Hard Drive 2 (1TB, practically empty it is not my Mac OSX Boot Drive), selected "create second partition for windows", gave it 131GB clicked partition, I saw the BOOTCAMP hard drive show up on my desktop now.
I inserted the Win764BIT dvd I made, BootCamp prompted for it, I clicked OK...
It restarts, windows 7 setup loads, I get to the point where I selected the Boot Camp hard drive, and click Format, it finishes, I click Next, and it says:
Windows is unable to install to the selected location: error 0x80300024, the partition I am installing to is: Disk 1: Partition 3 (although there is, Disk 0, and 2 other unknown partitions of 128MB for Disk 0, and then Disk 1 Partition 3, and 2 other unknown partitions of 128MB for Disk 1.
EDIT: I did rename the ISO file I downloaded from: "7100.0.090421-1700x64fre_client_en-us_retail_ultimate-grc1culxfrer_endvd.iso" to "win764.iso".
Can anyone help me with this?

There should be a selection screen, and try #2. I think that is called EFI Boot. I can't, because of EFI32 1.1, and 64-bit Windows and Apple are looking for UEFI 2.x / EFI64.
I had Windows Vista, and installed Windows 7 to another hard drive partition with the DVD written to disk (8GB) on another partition. Install off hard drive was fast, and never even boot from DVD.

E540 install Win 8 to new M.2 SSD - how?

Hi peeps,
I'm stuck. I've mounted the new SSD (MyDigitalSSD 256GB) in my new E540, BIOS shows it's there, but I can't figure out how to migrate the preinstalled Win 8 to the new drive. I've made a USB recovery drive and tried doing a system reset but the installation just goes straight on to the old HDD.
I'm willing to do a clean install if that is the solution but I'd appreciate some advice on how to proceed (seeing as there's no sticker with product-key on the back)
Can anybody give me a quick list of the steps I need to take?
Please only answer to this if you no a fail safe solution. I really don't want to waste my time trying this or that. I know this has been done before but I simply haven't been able to find a full and understandable discription of the process.

After much reading on the internet I got it done.
I managed to get a windows 8 iso from a reliable source which I burnt to a dvd. I booted from the optical drive and installed windows on my M.2 SSD.
At first the setup program wouldn't allow the installation. I removed the HDD where windows was previously installed, deleted all the partitions on the SSD during setup (after mucking around I did have some things on it all ready) and whoosh - off it went.
On the downside - I have to get all the drivers the notebook needs myself.

Install win 8.1 error looking for disk

I have a new Mac Mini w/ Mavericks OS. I have been trying to install Win 8.1 for days. I had a keyboard on order, finally came today to allow me to Recover the Mac from a failed Win 8.1 install. I have read hundreds of conversations on this topic. And to air one question constantly asked, 'Why! Why is it that there are dozens of different ways people are having to use to install one program? Why?!?'
I am able to get to the page in Windows setup where I am to select the drive called BOOTCAMP.
I select the drive
I then FORMAT the drive
Then I am told that drive - or any installation for Windows drive - is NOT found or available.
I've gotten to this screen a dozen times now.
I have arrived there by two methods 1) following the 'book' on Win 8.1 installation via BOOTCAMP and 2) Once here I shut the machine down and reboot with CTRL-key at restart -> select the WINDOWS drive from those available -> then follow the Windows install panels. Which, every time leads me right back to this page.
A note about this page. Every online tutorial, including the one on the Windows site and here on Apple forums, shows a DIFFERENT layout of the page. The tutorials show a page with a link to click for Advanced settings. My window just shows those Advanced settings. I don't see how this makes the process work or not, but that's a peculiarity of my setup woes compared to the instructions that exist.
NOW .. HOW in the name of all that is sensible!! -- do I get from the page where I select the partition I need to install Win 8.1 on..?
Again ..PLEASE!!! DO NOT retroute me through all the old settings everyone has been hashing about since September 2013. I need to know What Works NOW - January 2014- to get Windows 8.1, installed and working on my Mac Mini running latest version of Mavericks.

Windows 8.1 is not yet officially supported in Bootcamp. There is no way to know when it will be supported.
Having said that some systems will install it and it runs fine, though these systems appear to be few and far between.
The only advice I can give is to try some of the workarounds available on various sites or wait until it is supported by Bootcamp.

Fresh install Win 8.1 Pro into Pavilion X2 (10", 32GB tablet)

Have a Pavilion X2 (32GB version) with Win 8.1 Bing.
Need to get into domain, therefore wanted to fresh install Win 8.1 Pro, at the same time remove the recovery partition for more space.
F10 to bios to set bootup to USB drive, pops in a Win 8.1 Pro x64 installation disc, but X2 refuses to boot to disc.
Is it the x64 version disc problem or have i missed some setting to make the X2 boot to disc properly??

Error trying to install Win 8.1 x64 Enterprise

Brand new iMac 27", fully loaded, 1 TB SSD, 32 GB RAM, running Mavericks 10.9.3. Trying to install Win 8.1 x64 Enterprise (from MSDN).
Downloaded the ISO file and license and used Boot Camp to install the files and Apple Support files to a 16 GB USB 3.0 thumbdrive.
Used Boot Camp to repartition the 1 TB SSD to set a Windows partion of 256 GB, then the computer rebooted into Windows Setup.
Came to the drives listing, selected the BOOTCAMP parition (Drive 0, Partition 4, 239 GB) and formated it, then clicked on NEXT.
Thought for a while, then it came up with this error message: "We couldn't install Windows in the location you chose. Please check your media drive. Here's more info about what happened: 0x80300002"
Got some hits on Google about issues with VISTA, or with Intel processors, but, nothing specific.
Checked USB thumb drive with Norton, no issues, CHKDSK, no issues.
Have repeated the entire process twice, including restoring the patition and recreating it, and rebuilding the USB Thumbdrive.
Any ideas on what to do?

More sadness. I finally started getting the BSOD as soon as Windows booted, and, I could not restart or shutdown the computer...had to power off. That, after a few times, corrupted my BootCamp partition. I messed around with trying to fix, but, no joy.
Redid the partition, checked all drives for errors (fixed permissions on the Mac HD...LOT of errors), and created a new partition.
Used USB 2.0 (VERY SLOW) thumbdrive and had all external drives removed, and installed Win 8.1 Pro, not Enterprise this time.
Got it back up, patched it, configured it, put Norton 360 on it (have on all my computers and iOS devices) shut down, and hooked up the external drives. Booted up and...got the BSOD.
This time I had Windows Debugger loaded, and after the BSOD could reboot, go back intoWindows, and Debug.
Culprit seems to be Norton--in particular a Norton Storage driver. Will be contacting vendor to fix.

MacBook Pro 8,1 – Intel Core i5 – 2.23 GHz (early 2011) New with OSX 10.6 – current on all updates.
I successfully installed rEFit. I used Boot Camp to install Win 7. All was great.
Then installed debian 6. Somehow after the debian install and restart (I know this sounds crazy) but I am now reduced to Win 7 only. rEFit is not present when rebooting nor is OSX or debian. Further, I am unable to force the install DVD to launch when rebooting, by holding C, D or F8. The Option key brings me to the grey screen with a padlock. I have attempted the root and local pw- no go. Restart holding D takes me to the windows boot manager. I have attempted several options within the Advanced Options; including – Repair Your computer, safe mode and “last known good config,” All of which did nothing.
I can see all my OSX files within win7. I tried to install the OSX within windows. Ya right, that did nothing..
I only desire to get back to OSX...
What are my options??

Yes, you royally hosed up your machine.
You should first try to get your files off, any way you can to a external drive.
Your going to need to hold c and boot from the disk that came with your computer and a couple of screens in under the menu is a option for Disk Utility.
Select your drive and Erase with Security Option Zero, format the drive HFS+ Journaled and when that's finished (about a hour or so) then quit and install OS X from the installer.
I hope this works, but I suspect it won't. Others have hosed their machines trying to use a Linux disk without proper partition formatting too.
Another option might be to use another Mac to c boot off the Snow Leopard disk and install OS X onto a external drive, take that to the problem Mac and try holding option and booting off of it to erase your internal drive.
You could replace the drive.

There was someone else around here who hosed their Mac with a Linux disk too. Try to find it.

Hey buddy
You will not find any SATA or IDE settings in the BIOS. The problem is that you have not installed the SATA driver which is necessary to install the XP on this notebook.
The key is Intel Matrix Storage Manger!
The Storage Manager has to be included into the Windows XP OS during the setup procedure using the button F6.
At the other hand you could include the Storage Manger using the free application called nLite.
Search a little bit in this forum. There are enough threads and postings regarding this theme.
