Migrate mail from 10.6.8 to 10.7.5

I have an extremely simple requirement, to manually migrate my mail from Snow leopard (10.6.8) to Lion (10.7.5). Explaining my situation below-
I have an iMac(originally 10.6.8) and for multiple reasons, I chose to upgrade to Lion (10.7.5) rather than Mountain Lion. From snow leopard I have taken each and every type of back in the form of the folders and attached prefernce files, for example, as a backup of keychains, I have the keychains folder from the main library as well as the user library, similarly for address book, safari and mail. So in case of mail, I have copied, the mail folder from the main library, mail and mail downloads folder from the user library and the com.apple.mail.plist from the preferences folder in the user library. After taking the said backups I have formatted my machine and installed the operating system lion, 10.7.5
Listing details of mail accounts, I have five live(Microsoft, live, outlook, hotmail, whatever you call them) accounts and one solitary gmail account. All these accounts are on POP protocol(simply because I want/need a copy of mails, communications and downloaded attachments to be on the mail server for emergency situations(such as this))
Now the issues begin, speaking strictly in terms of mail. Listing steps taken and their results,
1) Action - Followed the direct copy method listed in the link, (http://macs.about.com/b/2011/08/05/moving-your-snow-leopard-mail-to-lion.htm)
Copied the following folders, mail folder from main library(I.e. under macintosh hd), mail and mail downloads folder from the user library, com.apple.plist from the preferences folder in the user library. Note. a) this is a fresh install of lion, the mail app hasn't been executed even once. b) I deleted the v2 folder already located inside the mail folder in the user library, because it was suggested in the comments section in the link above.
Result - After the said process, I started mail(for the first time) mail detected the old structure, said it needed to reindex. After the process I could see all my accounts, all my mail, smart folders, all the attachments... Blissful. "BUT!!" when I hit get new mail, the mess begins. Mail starts to "RE" download ALL the mails AGAIN, 8000 mails, 7.5 gb worth of attachments.
2) Action - after the above debacle, quit mail and studied its folder structures in the user library as well as the main library, compared this folder structure of my snow leopard mail backup and manually tried COPYING ".mbox" in their respective new folder locations. Eg. Copied, "inbox.mbox" of account "x" from my snow leopard backup to the newly created folder structure in lion (I.e. inside the v2 folder, inside the account x folder.) also copied each individual preference file like MailAccounts.plist and all and copied them to their new location.
Result - the above process was an even bigger disaster. It corrupted my basic mail app. I had to perform an erase and reinstall the os.
3) action - after the fresh reinstall, and doing further research, I set up accounts INDIVIDUALLY (I.e. via Add account) this time "importing" each individual mailboxes via import command, once imported, I placed the emails contained within, to their respective inboxes.
Result - the above process too shows all my mails again, but when I hit get new mail, mail starts to redownload the **** mails from the server AGAIN!!
I have tried the above processes umpteen number of times in different variations, such as only one account at a time or importing only one inbox at a time. Still no luck. This a very frustrating issue. I have been manually migrating mail for the past 5 years. This new v2 folder is ******* everything up.
Note. Checked "duplicate mails" in lion help, which told me that duplicate mails get downloaded via the POP protocol if coming from an older version of OSx.
So is there a way I can make my mail lion compatible? Some software, some plugin? The entire world seemed to migrate mail, why not me?
A solution would be divine, as I am a designer with live projects and attachments stuck in the mail... Temporarily using mail from my iPad as my main machine which also has started acting like a ***** after ios 7, which is another headache all together.
Need help please, anyone on the forum with knowledge on how to solve this issue would have a special place in my heart besides a million thanks in advance.
Thanks a million in advance,
Abu Suda.

Try reindexing the mailbox. This can take awhile if you have a lot of mail.
Reindex messages.
If that doesn't work try deleting MessageUidsAlreadyDownloaded3.
Quit the application.
You need to look in your user Library. Either hold down the option key while using the Finder “Go To Folder” command and select your user Library in your home folder or use the Finder “Go To Folder” command and enter ~/Library/Mail/V2/Mail Data/MessageUidsAlreadyDownloaded3.  Move the file to your desktop.
Open the application and test. If it works okay, delete the file from the desktop.
If the application is the same, return thefile to where you got it from, overwriting the newer ones.
If you prefer to make your User library permanently visible, use the Terminal command found below.
Show User Library
You might want to bookmark the command. I had to use it again after I installed 10.8.5. I have also been informed that if you drag the user library to Finder it will remain visible.

I just finished migrating a client from Google Apps to Microsoft Exchange Online using the IMAP option in the Microsoft Online Services Migration Tool.
I added the mailboxes by creating a CSV file [i.e. GoogleApps(Gmail)_Mailboxes.csv] in the following format:
    SourceIdentity,SourceServer,SourceLoginID,SourcePassword,TargetIdentity
    [email protected],imap.gmail.com,[email protected],P@ssword1,[email protected]
    [email protected],imap.gmail.com,[email protected],P@ssword2,[email protected]
    [email protected],imap.gmail.com,[email protected],P@ssword3,[email protected]
Then I created a custom folder map XML file [i.e. GoogleApps(Gmail)_FolderMap.xml] to map the Google Apps (Gmail) labels to the appropriate Exchange (Outlook) mailbox folders and create those that didn't exist (i.e. Important, Starred, Follow up,
Misc, Priority) as sub-folders under the Inbox:

Additionally, I had to tell the Internet E-mail Mailbox Migration Wizard to use the "Individual Account Credentials" option since I was able to specify each account password in the CSV file when adding the mailboxes to Microsoft Online Services Migration
    Tools console.
Just to note, the users had to manually export their contacts to a CSV file and calendars to iCal (ICS) files in order to import those items into Outlook.
I hope this will benefit others since Microsoft doesn't seem to have a custom, specifically defined migration strategy for this scenario.  With Google Apps being in direct competition with BPOS/Office365, I assumed that Microsoft would have a simple
strategy using something like ActiveSync to facilitate the migration of email, contacts, calendar entries, etc.  Hopefully we'll see something along those lines become available in a future release of the migration tools.

  • What is the best way to migrate mail from OSX 10.4.11 (Tiger) to OSX 10.7 (Lion)

    Greetings,
Does anyone have experience migrating mail boxes from OSX 10.4 to OSX 10.7?
I have an old 1.5 Ghz PowerPC G4 laptop with a lot of email (about 8 years worth). I just purchased a new Mac Mini with OSX 10.7 Lion and I'd like to migrate 2 groups of files, mail and photos. I figure the mail might be the most difficult, hence this request for information.
I have read where you can run a migration assistant for OS 10.5 and 10.6 to OSX 10.7 but there are only a few articles about the earlier OS.
Also, I would like to migrate ONLY the mail box into an existing user account. I would rather not migrate older files and applications that I have on the older PC.
Can anyone point me to articles about doing this?
    Thank you,
    Tim Kern

    Hi Linc,
    Thank you for yout suggestion.
Export the import makes sense. Do you know of any "How to..." articles for exporting from Tiger?
    Thanks again,
    Tim Kern

  • Migrating Mail from 10.4.11 to 10.5.8 - Upgrade first?

I am switching to a new 2.66 GHz iMac with 10.5.8. I have had very limited success moving my Mail via Firewire. Old Mail version is 2.1.3 (753.1). New version is 3.6 (936). I have been able to copy the vCards from my Address Book, but no mailboxes or folders. I get the message that 10.5.8 won't open the old Mail folder. Is there a newer Mail version I can download to my G5 which would would then allow migration to my new 10.5.8 system? If not, is there any other way to migrate mailboxes, folders, and address lists to the new machine?

I think I had just replaced the existing Mail folder with the one from my old Mac. I went back, deleted Mail from the new Mac's Library, and copied in the Mail folder from the old Mac. It now calls itself Mail 00-24-40.
Under Mail 00-24-40 I see DefaultCounts, Envelope Index, Envelope Index-Journal, LSMMap2, Mail (with subfolders that look like a partial listing of my mail folders, each one with a corresponding *.mbox beneath it) , Mailboxes (with subfolders corresponding to a complete list of my mail folders and their subfolders), MessageRules.plist, MessageRules.plist.backup, [email protected], Signatures, SmartMailboxes.plist, SmartMailboxes.plistbackup.
    Under [email protected] I see Deleted Messages.mbox, Drafts.mbox, INBOX.mbox, MessageUidAlreadyDownload2, and Sent Mesages.mbox.
When I click on Mail in my Dock, I just get an Inbox with today's messages. No folders, older Inbox content, or any folders.
    What do you think?

  • Migrate - Mail from G5 to Mac Pro

I have just got a new Mac Pro and decided to do a fresh install rather than migrate my user accounts over.
However, I copied the two Mail folders from my library on my old Power Mac G5, but none of the messages show up on my new Mac Pro.
    Am I missing something else?

    Am I missing something else?
Yes, you are missing the plist.
First, copy ~/Library/Mail from your old system and replace the same folder on your Mac Pro.
Then replace "com.apple.Mail.plist" preference file located in ~/Library/Preferences with the same from your old system. This contains all email account settings and general mail preferences Now launch Mail. If it asks you to "import" anything, decline.

  • Manually migrating mail from Snow Leopard to Mavericks via Time Machine backup

Just performed a clean install of Mavericks 10.9.2 onto my computer and I would now like to manually bring in my mail from my time machine backup.  Can you tell me what files to copy over and in exactly what folder they should go?  P.S.  I don't want to use migration assistant because Mail is the only thing I care about carrying over.  Thank you.

If the two machine's have two different username/password combos, you cant' do what you want. The only solution is to create a duplicate account on the MB, mimicking the one on the iMac and then copy the Mail folder into that user's Library folder. Then, use that as your primary user account, deleting the the useless other one.

  • How to Migrate Mail from One Mac Computer (MBP) to another Mac Computer (MBA)

I just bought a Mac Book Air (OS X Mavericks, Mac Mail) after a couple of years using a Mac Book Pro (OS X Mavericks, Mac Mail) and need to migrate my mail from MBP to MBA. Is there any steps to follow

MVP - if you still need the advice, or if any others come across this thread hoping it will help.
The simplest way is now that you have your mail files copied from the old Mac (as per:
    Grant Lenahan
Simply move over your users/you/library/mail folder ( it has all the mail files).
Now launch Mail on the new Mac and go to File > Import Mailboxes
Select the mail boxes you want to import and Bob's your mother's brother!
    Works a treat!

  • How to migrate mail from cabinets in GW 8.x to Gmail

    Hi,
I've got a Groupwise 8.x email account and my only access is from a web browser. This account is being deactivated, and so I want to migrate all my email to my Gmail account. Through the settings of my Gmail account, I was able to IMPORT email from the Inbox of my Groupwise account. But, that step did not export any mail contained in my cabinets.
I found some help online that showed how to EXPORT mail from the cabinet folders, but you have to have the actual Email client to do this, and I only have access from my browser. I can export mail items one at a time, but since I have many email items, I figured that there has to be a better way.
Can anyone offer me some sugggestions and/or links to help?
    Thank you in advance.

Well it does require a little bit of configuration. "Little" things like
pointing it to the GroupWise server, which depending on the size of the
system may well be the same host name as used for webaccess, and the
default post office port is 1677. What tripped you up in connecting?

Well you do have an account that you are trying to get mail out of, that
is the account you would be using, selecting the IMAP option and
pointing it to the GroupWise server.
And you have an account you are trying to get your mail into, your GMail
account, that you'd also have to connect to via IMAP.

Select all messages from a cabinet folder, Drag and drop them into
GMAIL. Rinse and repeat per folder.

  • Migrate Mail from one account to another

    Hi People,
I was wondering how I can migrate all my mail data from one user to another.
I want to consolidate two users into one (the user to which i want to migrate to, does not have mail set up) then delete the old user account.
Is there a process for this? Or is it a case of just copying the mail data folder between users?
    Thanks.

quit mail on both accounts and copy the file /users/username1/library/preferences/com.apple.mail.plist and the entire folder /users/username1/library/mail to the corresponding locations for user2. start Mail on user2 and it will look like it did on user1.

  • Migrate mail from old mac

Is there a way to migrate my mail, Earthlink POP? The Migration Assistant just seems to move all applications and I don't want that.
    Thanks.

What version of Mac OS is on the old Mac and what is on the new one? From the looks of your post, you have Tiger on the old one and I assume you have Snow Leopard on the new one. Let us know for sure.
In general, Mail stores all its files at Home/Library/Mail. And there is a Mail preference file at Home/Library/Preferences/com.apple.Mail. Copying these from you old installation and putting them in the same place on your new installation will transfer your POP account and all associated folders to your new Mac. Some extra care may need to be taken if you've already begun using Mail on your new Mac so as not to overwrite anything by accident.

  • Migrating mail from Tiger to Mavericks

I was getting ready to use Migration Assistant to migrate from a PowerPC G4 with OSX Tiger (10.4.11) to an iMac with Snow Leopard (OSX 10.6.8) when a pop-up came on the screen for a free update to Mavericks (OSX 10.9). Without thinking of the ramifications of doing this, I ran the update. Now I find out that Migration Assistant in Mavericks is not compatible with Migration Assistant in Tiger. Also, I did not turn on the Time Machine so cannot revert back to Snow Leopard.
Since I cannot use Migration Assistant, how do I migrate the Tiger mail into Mavericks? I tried importing mailbox from within Mavericks and it imports but does not look right.
    Any help is appreciated.

  • Migrating Mail from 10.8.4 to 10.6.8

So I have a client who has presented me with the following issue. He has a MacBook Air (Late 2010) running 10.8.4 with a POP email service. He also has a MacPro tower from 2007 running 10.6.8. He does the majority of his work on the tower but when he travels he manually moves his mail  folders (from Mac Mail app) to the MBA and then moves them back to the tower once he returns. However, it seems there have been some major changes in Mountain Lion that are preventing him from moving the mail back to 10.6.8.
Does anyone know a way to accomplish this or if it is even possible any longer. If it is not possible, can anyone explain exactly what changes have taken place with the Mail app to cause the incompatibility. So far I have discovered these differences in Mail folder file locations:
SOME new mac mail folder/file locations are...
    ~/Library/Containers/com.apple.mail/Data/Library/Preferences/com.apple.Mail.plis t
~/Library/Containers/com.apple.mail/Data/Library/ also contains an alias to
    the mail folder at ~/Library/Containers/mail
    OLD 10.6                                                                                                    ->                    NEW 10.8
    users/trboh/library/mail/Mailboxes plus several others          ->          ~/Library/Mail/V2/
    users/trboh/library/mail downloads                                                  ->          ~/Library/Containers/com.apple.mail/Data/Library/Mail Downloads
    users/trboh/library/preferences/com.apple.Mail.plist          ->          ~/Library/Containers/com.apple.mail/Data/Library/Preferences/com.apple.Mai l.plist
Any info is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

It is important to keep in mind that Apple no longer feels any need for consistancy and/or compatability. My recent transfer from OS 10.6.8 to 10.8 cost me approximately 60% of a collection of e-mails spanning over 20  years, including the entire folder of my correspondance with my readers and a large portion of my genealogy correspondance. Nothing I nor my techie nor the Apple techs could do would recover anything (yes, I had what I thought was a complete time machine backup. It only restored a small number of files.) ALL the attachments, Some entire folders (and contents) as well as individuall msg's were left wandering the ether.
So, it is basically very simple. Don't trust Apple with anything you actually need. I have lost  emails, stories I've written (and published, but no longer have on my computer) stories written, but not yet published (I've discovered that editors are, by-in-large, unwilling to pay for stories they can't read) and stories in progress.
And, yes, as you may have noticed, I'm NOT very happy with Apple right now. My data is missing and programs I've used for years are suddenly unuseable. So much for the concepts of backwards compatabiliy and data security. Apparently outmoded concepts in the new Mac ethos were making continued colatteral sales is so much more important than productivity.

  • Migrating mail from Communigate Pro to OSX Server

Does anyone by any chance have any experience of this and can advise if there's a way to achieve it other than the obvious (create new mail accounts, get users to drag everything over folder by folder) approach?
I have a client with Communigate Pro who recently upgraded his OSX server to 10.6 and fancies dumping Communigate and going back to Postfix.

The power in your computer is fine.  I was just trying to warn you that if any network requests come in the server configuration immediately priorises that higher than interacting with the user sitting that the keyboard.  Apps you are using may stutter until the network request has been answered.  Of course, if you don't have many network users and with a computer that powerful, it probably won't take the server long enough to answer the network request that you notice any problem.
No webmail portal for mail, and no easy way to add one.  Just mail apps using POP, SMTP, etc..
Here's the manual for OS X Server if you're interested:
