Migrate one account from multi-user laptop to new hard drive

Hello - I aologize if this has been asked/answered elsewhere, but I couldn't find it.
I have a MacBook unibody whose hard drive is reaching capacity; plus I am giving it to my daughter to take to college.
I am "upgrading" the machine with an internal SSD, a larger HDD, and making the optical drive external.
I want to move *just her account* to the new SSD. The new SSD isn't much bigger than the curren internal drive, so I want to put her Music, Movies, and Pictures on a 300 GB HDD partition and use the remaining 200 GB paritition for Time Machine backups.
I know this is a lot of things. I don't think I have any questions about how to do this physically -- I bought all the accessories from OWC, including an external enclosure for the optical drive and their USB to eSATA (etc.) connector to dupe the existing drive to the new drive.
The problem is that it's not a simply "duplication" issue. I don't want a clone of the old drive. To further complicate things, my daughter's current account is not an administrator account, and it needs to be an administrator account on the new drive (it's the only account that will be on the new drive.
"OLD" LAPTOP                         "NEW" LAPTOP
My account (administrator)          N/A
Wife's account                            N/A
Sister's account                          N/A
Target Daughter Account             Yes, as administrator
Her files                                     Yes, all of them
Photos, Movies, Music --> new internal HDD, 300 GB partition
Documents --> OK to be on SSD
Time Machine                                   200 GB partiion, new internal HDD
Applications                               Virtually all of them
Anyone else's files                      None
So -- am I making this waay to complicated? Should I just install Lion on the new internal drive, set her as with a new administrator account, and then drag the files I want into the locations I want? Do all the files associated with the Home folder have to live on the same drive?
Any help, much appreciated.

It's a lot to consider, but the short answer is that Migration Assistant or Setup Assistant will do what you want. Setup Assistant may be easier in your case. In any event what you propose sounds like a good idea.
My first question is how do you intend to connect the various drives. If you install the SSD and leave the MacBook's internal HD in place, that would seem to be the simplest thing to do. Install Lion on the SSD, then, boot from it. A new installation of Lion will call Setup Assistant to initially configure her user account and migrate data from her existing account - you will choose the option to migrate from another hard disk. You can choose the user account from the existing installation, and Setup Assistant will permit you to choose what to migrate. If you have the space, migrate everything, since you are about to remove the existing hard disk drive (if you do not have sufficient space, you will need to remove the existing HD and use it externally, since you will need to install the larger, empty one first).
Make sure you check the box to allow that user to administer the computer. It might be a good idea to promote her account to Administrator before starting any of this anyway.
Next, remove the existing HD and install the larger, empty one. Boot the MacBook, log in under her account, partition and format the HD using Disk Utility.
Drag her entire Pictures, Music, and Movies folders to the data partition. When you launch iTunes (for instance) hold the Option key. That will cause a prompt to appear asking you to locate her iTunes Library. Select the one on the designated partition. Repeat for iPhoto.
Make sure that all her photos and music appears as expected. Once you are satisfied it's working properly you can delete those folders from the SSD.
Next is Time Machine but after all this work that ought to be easy enough to figure out.
I hope this makes sense.
There are other alternatives including using Carbon Copy Cloner or the equivalent to clone the existing HD to the SSD, then deleting the accounts you do not need. It's up to you to determine if that is simpler.

If you want to use Time Machine to recover the contents of one of its a backups to a new drive, follow the instructions in Mac OS X 10.6: Recovering your entire system. Note that you must select the "Restore System From Backup" option from the Utilities menu of the Installer disc to do this.
Also note that if you are transferring files to a hard drive to be used with a different computer, you should use Migration Assistant instead. This intentionally will not copy everything because some settings, applications, etc. are not compatible computer-to-computer. Migration Assistant will copy everything that is.

As noondaywitch says, it should use the latest backup.
Where are your backups (external HD, Time Capsule, etc.)?
It sounds like there are two separate sets, and you're not connected to the right set.

  • All of my music was on a hard drive that failed. How do I download them from iTunes match to my new hard drive?

All of my music was on a hard drive that failed. How do I download them from iTunes match to my new hard drive? I know how to do it one song at a time, but I want to know if there is a way to do it for all 10,000 song files at once?

There are some recovery programs out there if you google them - many with free trials. I haven't tried them so I have no opinion.Read any professional tech and user reviews you can find before you try one. I have read here in the past that some have worked for people who have posted here.
To help in the future, have you considered using Jump Desktop - Remote Desktop? I know it won't solve the problem you're dealing with now (unless notes were taken on your computer.) It's in the app store. It's the #1 paid app in the business category and the reviews are great. It allows you to see anything that's on your computer on your ipad. If you take your notes on your ipad then you might want to email them to yourself, put them on Word in your computer, for example, and then if you need them in class, you remotely connect your ipad to your computer and you will see your notes. This way you won't have to rely so much on the cloud. The explanation would be too long here, but you might want to take a look at it. You can use the free trial on jumpdesk.com and then if it works for you, buy it in the app store.
Meanwhile, it's hours since you sent this post. Hopefully others who can help solve your problem who are on this forum now can help you. I hope you get your notes back. Don't give up too quickly.
    Hope this helps.

  • How to I transfer my music from my ipod to the new hard drive?

My windows laptop crashed two months ago and I lost everything on it.  I was able to get the hard drive replaced but all of my music is on my ipod (nano - 2nd edition, I think).  Only a small percentage is purchased via itunes.
I have been googling how to now move my music from my ipod to my new hard drive but most solutions assume that I still have the old laptop/hard drive.  I know I was able to do this previously when the hard drive crashed, but I can't seem to remember now as it was about 5 years ago.  I'm afraid to do anything just now as I don't want it syncing to an empty library and have my ipod wiped clean.
Is there any way of moving the music from my ipod to my itunes library on the new hard drive??  Please help as I don't want to have to reload over 100 cd's

My mac hard drive crashed, and had to be replaced. Can I restore my iTunes library from my iPod to my new hard drive? About 2500 songs, some from iTunes store, most from other online sources or my own CDs.

To restore non-purchased music on the iTunes Store to iTunes from the iPod, you need a third-party application as Senuti > http://www.fadingred.com/senuti/ You can use others, but this has worked perfectly for me

how to reinstall the system from time machine to a new hard drive?

If you are connected to the internet you can do this.
Boot your computer and immediately hold down command, option and R  (three keys together). This gets you connected with internet recovery.
See this article for more directions: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4718.
This process installs an OS on your blank drive. You can then boot from the fresh OS installation and restore from your Time Machine back up.
Note that you cannot boot from a TM back up.

  • Re: How to install Windows from recovery media on a new hard drive?

Immediately after a Windows update, my computer would not restart. It said disk error.
I could not start it from the recovery media and F8 would not work. I bought and installed a new hard drive. Now when I put in the recovery media to install Windows on the new hard drive, it gives an error message.
What can this be? Should I be able to install Windows from the recovery media?
It is Windows 7 and the laptop is Satellite A500, 64 bit.

    Hello
Generally speaking you can install recovery image on every compatible HDD so thee should not be any problem about it.
Please tell us what happen when you start recovery installation. Which error message is shown?
Is new HDD recognized in BIOS. Before you start recovery installation set BIOS to default settings.

  • HT1329 Hi All - My hard drive failed and I am trying to move all my music from my ipod to the new hard drive. I am operating on Win 7 64 bit. Can anyone help please?

    Hi All,
My hard drive crashed and is no longer usable. I just installed a new drive however, I am not finding any way to export my recorded CD's from the Ipod touch to the new hard drive. Can anyone help please? I thought by enabling syc with Ipod woudl do it but to no avail.
    Thanks

I used a 3rd party program called copytrans http://www.copytrans.net/ that is not free to move my library from my ipod to my itunes library when I had to start from scratch.  After that happened I started backing up my music that purchased from the itunes store to a dvd so I would always have it if things went south.  Now I always backup my purchased digital music to an optical disc just in case plus everythng else I have is on retail cd's so I can just rebuild my library from scratch again if I have to.  You should also regularly back up your itunes media folder to another disc so your entire library will be backed up just in case you should lose your program drive.

  • Migrating One Account from Powerbook G4 to New Macbook Pro?

Bad news / good news.  Bad news: my Powerbook died.  Power connector won't power it and the battery won't charge.  Good news: the last thing I did with it was make a full back up with SuperDuper!.
My daughter was using it and her only concerns are getting her music and pictures over to the new computer (refurb Macbook Pro, 13").
So, I'm thinking I could create an admin account on the new computer and then copy her home folder from the backup to the new computer.
The only "gotchas" on this would be:
Having the new computer recognizing the copied home folder as an account - it should, shouldn't it?
iPhoto '11 reading the older iPhoto database - again, ought to work, right?
Authorizing the new computer on iTunes - easy
Any applications that she had on the Powerbook - I can re-install them on the new computer
Did I miss anything?  Any problems that anyone anticipates?  Is there a better way?
Also, how do I de-authorize the old computer if it won't boot (without de-authorizing ALL computers)?

As Macjack says, you can migrate them.
But you can't "pick and choose" -- you must migrate all or none.  However, Migration Assistant won't transfer an app if an app of the same name already exists, so it won't overlay newer versions of apps with older ones.
See Using Migration Assistant on Snow Leopard or Leopard for instructions and details; note the pink boxes toward the bottom.

  • Pull individual things from Time machine to a NEW hard drive?

Howdy - couldnt find this issue addressed anywhere. I have a macbook running OS10.6. i backed up about 10 days ago using time machine. then, my logic board took a crap over the weekend.
i have sent off the macbook for repairs, and i have a loaner macbook in the meantime from a friend of mine...however it is running regular leopard.
Can I pull off individual files (photobooth pics and videos, iMovie videos, etc) from the time machine backup of MY machine to my friend's machine? Or do I have to do a complete restore to my friend's machine (which I have permission to do, it's basically an extra machine he has laying around, anyway)...
If I can pull individual files from MY time machine to his macbook, are there any tricks or tips that I need to be aware of?
    Thanks so much, all.

Yes. Since it's a different Mac, your best bet may be to Migrate some or all of your User Account to your friend's Mac. See the pink box in #19 of Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum).

You can do that, via option 17 in the FAQ, but unless you migrate the account as above, you may not have permission to copy the files.
