Migrate OSX/apps to new HD

I have a stock mac pro with the stock 7200 250 gig drive
I just recently purchased a 10k raptor 76gig drive with the intent of putting my osx install and all my applications on it. Then using my 250 gig stock as a scratch disc and an general file server.
My questions is if there is a safe way or "correct way" to move my osx install to a different internal drive and then ask it to boot from that drive.
Any help would be incredibly appreciated!

Use the Restore option of Disk Utility to clone the system to the new drive.
Prep the drive first:
1.  Boot from your Tiger DVD. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button, then select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
3. Set the number of partitions from the dropdown menu (use 1 partition unless you wish to make more.) Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the volume(s) mount on the Desktop.
4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
6. Click on the Erase button. The format process will take 30 minutes to an hour or more depending upon the drive size.
Next, clone the startup volume:1. Select the startup volume from the left side list.
2. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
3. Drag the startup volume to the Source entry field.
4. Select the backup volume from the leftside list and drag it to the Destination entry field.
5. Check the box to Erase Destination.
6. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
To set the new drive as your permanent startup drive open the Startup Disk preference in System Preferences.  Select the system on the new drive, then click on the Restart button.

  • Migrating iLife apps from new iMac to G5 machine with Leopard

I bought the iMac which came with iLife and then built up a dual proc G5 to do music and video on. I don't want to have to buy a copy of iLife since I already have it but really want Garage Band, Movie Maker and iDVD on the G5. I started to migrate these with Migration Assistant but it didn't give me an option to choose just those apps. Is there a problem with me migrating all apps and then just deleting the ones I don't need on the G5? I assumed this would move the licenses for the apps from the iMac to the G5. Can someone confirm if the Migration effectively uninstalls the app on the machine it's being migrated from?
I'm not interested in making a copy of these three apps and am happy to delete them from iMac once moved over but it's not clear to me that this will work (even thought guys as the Apple store said I could do it).
    Thanks

The short answer is probably no.
I have 2 imacs both Intel.
I was having a problem with iLife apps on my older imac and so I dumped the iLife apps to reinstall them.
I inserted the install disk for my newer imac and it refused to allow me to install from that disk.
I used Pacifist and it worked for all apps except iPhoto which would not work properly even after several attempts.
I located my iLife 08 disk and it installed fine.
Despite the fact that most of the iLife apps seemed to install using Pacifist, they were suspect so I installed them all afresh from the ILife 08 disk.
The last thing I need is a program that may screw up and lose some of my photos, movies or compositions, especially when the package is reasonably priced.

  • Time machine migration when apps on new computer are later versions

I have a time machine backup of my old macbook, just got a new one and it comes with iLife 11 preinstalled. I don't want these apps to be overwritten with my older (iLife 09) apps.
Should I rename them first, or delete the older apps off of time machine or is there any other way to make sure I don't get these overwritten.
(I imagine the iLife apps must be on the install disk in case I do have to reinstall iLife 11), but I don't have that currently, it was all installed at the university - hence I just want to know the quickest way to do this
    Thanks!

My problem was that I asked a specific question and was directed to an FAQ that was a different, much more general question:
Take a look at your first post -- there's no mention there that you'd done any research at all, or whether you'd already started up the new Mac. And it ends: "I just want to know the quickest way to do this."
"How do I set up a new Mac from my old Mac or its backups?" - not what I asked. FAQ 19 is mostly about how to use set up assistant which I already know and is irrelevant in this case as the installation had already taken place and therefore I cannot access Set Up assistant
You didn't mention any of that.
so the FAQ was telling me to reinstall or create a temporary account, time consuming and not very helpful when all I needed to be told was "you can run migration assistant and it will be fine", which was the very helpful and speedy advice I got elsewhere.
Again, that was far from clear in your first post. And the next sentence starts "After your Mac is up and running, you can use the similar Migration Assistant ..." with a link to that page. Many, many people start up their new Mac, skip +Setup Assistant,+ and create a new user account, and use it for a while. Then they run Migration Assistant and wonder where all their data is, and once they find the migrated account, want to consolidate the two. We see those roughly once a day.
After reading all the way to the bottom, there is a sort of answer to my question:
"Note that Setup Assistant is smart enough not to replace newer Apple apps that came with the new Mac with older versions from the old Mac or backups."
But then a caveat that confuses the whole issue for me:
"In some cases, there may be a few exceptions:" followed by lots of links to follow.
Should I have just ignored the fact that some apps aren't compatible with Snow Leopard? Or that in some cases you may have to re-enter serial numbers?
It would have saved us a lot of time, if you know the direct answer to the very specific question to say what the answer is rather than "read the FAQs". I'd already done a search to see if my question was frequently asked, and it wasn't.
Again, had you indicated that . . .

  • Migrating system/apps to new SSD?

As above, I just bought a new 240GB SSD drive and I would like to migrate my system from the existing HD in the Mac Pro to the new SSD and boot from that SSD.  The HD will then become a simple data drive.  How can I do this with the least hassle?

Are you in the habit of cloning your system already?
Carbon Copy Cloner can move the Lion Recovery Partition.
Also selective choose the folders to skip ~ your media folders in your home account
For how to keep home folder on another drive
    http://chris.pirillo.com/how-to-move-the-home-folder-in-os-x-and-why/
though keep home folder is fine and just direct your apps where to find their folders.
Also, a clean install and Setup Assistant also works.
I assume you don't want all your data to be on SSD, just the small 1GB in
    ~/Library
which would benefit from staying with the OS.
    http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/7032/carbon-copy-cloner
    http://macperformanceguide.com/Mac-HowToClone.html
    http://macperformanceguide.com/Mac-HowToClone-backup.html
No matter what keep a disk image of your OS, keep a bootable hard drive of the system on standard hard drive. And keep your current setup as backup.  Use another hard drive for simple data instead.

  • Migrate/cone Apps to new h/w, same o/s

We need to migrate/clone our production Apps 11.5.10 to a new server (different hardware but same OS Red Hat 3.0). Please let me know the following:
What should we watch out for on the OS. Should we make sure to have exact same kernel & glibc versions? What else should we do while preparing the server/os before cloning Apps & database?
Thanks in advance for your reply.

Yes...you are on the right track. Try to duplicate your original box the best you can. I would suggest using Rapid clone to migrate your env. to the new box.

  • How do I migrate my apps and itunes from my old email ID to my new one

I moved and my previous cable provider shutdown my old email address and I have forgotten the password for that Itunes ID and I need to migrate it to my new ID/email.  Is there a way to do merge these 2 accounts for apps and music?  I have the original IPad getting ready to switch to a 3.

Back up you phone with iTunes, making sure to transfer all purchases.  When you sync your new phone it will ask you if you want to restore from backup or set it up as a new phone; select restore from backup.  Read through this: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2109.

how to upgrade my current OSX, apps, personal files, etc to a new brand SSD

If you have the old hard drive, buy an enclosure, boot your computer off the old hard drive, make a clone of your old hard drive and then copy the clone to the SDD. That will also give you the old hard drive for additional storeage. Other World Computing sells enclosures.
    Other World Computing
Clone  - Carbon Copy Cloner          (Often recommended as it has more features than some others)
    Clone – Data Backup
    Clone – Deja Vu
    Clone  - SuperDuper
    Clone - Synk

I'm having a similar problem...but mine results from an OS upgrade from 10.6.4 to 10.8.5.
Where did you access a clean copy of Java SE 6?  The link at adobe for archicval plug-ins is a dead download (and it doesn't appear to contain Java SE 6.).

  • Best way to migrate data & apps (if possible) to new Retina

My pal just dropped off his new Retina MBP and his old 2008 MBP, and he wants me to migrate his old to new. What's the best way to do that? I know I can clone the machine using CCC, but thinking why take his fresh install and put 4 years of crud on the new box. But on the other hand, I don't know where all his data is, and he is not sure either. I have a TM & clone of the old drive to work with, so what would you do?
    thx!

Well, the shortname is not interfering, just my pal requested the change. I don't think he wants his real name there, or something like that. The ehow article is just a rehash of https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-3872, and does not work if you have a space in the shortname.
Step 4: Rename your "Home" folder. Your new short name should be all letters in lowercase with no spaces.
That dunna work. OSX will create a copy of the folder and leave the old one - apparently you can not rename the folder with a space in the name, even logged in as root. I could try then deleting the old one with the space, but that's sure to jack things up (my guess).

  • Migration Asst: Transfer SOME (not ALL) apps to new Mac? Is 10.4 10.3 OK ?

I have a PB G4 running 10.4.11. I also just obtained an iBook G3 running 10.3.9. I don't have the System Install disks for either 10.4 or 10.3.
My goal is to transfer SOME (but not ALL) of my applications from the PB with 10.4.11 to the iBook with 10.3.9, using Migration Assistant. Is this even possible? Does Migration Assistant have the capacity to do ANY of the following tasks? :
    1. Transfer just some applications (which the user chooses) but not all of them?
    2. Transfer applications or users backwards down the OS scale, going from 10.4 to 10.3?
    3. Transfer an entire OS from one computer to the other? I.e. Can I use Migration Assistant to transfer 10.4.11 itself from the PB G4 to the older iBook G3?
I haven't tried it out yet because I don't want to mess anything up in case it's not allowed to go backwards down the OS scale. I think it is assumed that the new computer onto which the Migration Assistant will transfer new files will be running an OS that is at least as up-to-date as the donor computer's.
Also, the reason I don't want to transfer ALL my applications is that there is not enough hard drive space on the old iBook G3 to hold all the applications. I just need a few of them, but no longer have the original install disks.
If all else fails, I can try to do it manually, but with all the support files some of these applications have, I'm sure to mess it up. Hence my hope in Migration Assistant.
Any help with any of these questions would be appreciated, even if you can't answer all of them. Thanks.

    BDAqua --
OK, thanks. Your answers tell me I shouldn't try to use Migration Assistant in this case. The size of my "Applications" folder on my PB G4 is larger than the entire hard drive on the iBook G3. So if it's "all or nothing," I'll have to go with nothing. I'll just see if I can transfer the applications I need by hand, though that may be difficult -- I'm sure to leave out some key hidden "support" files and folders.
As for the side issue of needing to be in possession of the OS installation disks to even use the OS at all: does that mean one is legally required to wipe one's drive if one loses the disks that came with the computer? Say it ain't so! If that were the case, half the Macs in the US would have to be abandoned, since misplacing or losing the install disks is pretty commonplace. And buying used computers would become a near impossibility, since generally people don't include the disks with the computers. I bought both the PB G4 and the iBook G3 used, and in neither case did they come with the disks. Just the computer, nothing else. I have no choice but to use the OSes as is!

  • I want to go back to Snow Leopard but I get "you have to install mac osx.app 23.1.1

I have a new 21.5 iMac I just purchased July 9 so I was able to download Lion for free under the up-to-date program.  After installing Lion I decided I wanted to go back to Snow Leopard for various reasons. When I restart with the original Snow Leopard DVD that came with my machine and holding the C key down, I get the window for Mac OS X install DVD.  I click the icon to install SL and another window pops up stating "You can't use this version of the application. Install Mac OSX.app with this version of Mac OSX. You have to install Mac OSX.app 23.1.1"  To answer the question before hand....I don't have a time machine backup.

Thanks for all your help guys. I had trouble with my first install of Lion, it seemed buggy and when I tried some of the suggestions you offered, my machine did not always react the way it should have. I thought that was weird because it's a new iMac, only three weeks old. Pondini pointed me in the right direction and I think Lion is stable now. This worked after a few tries, not sure why I wasn't getting consistent results but it worked eventually.
    1. Shut the computer down.
    2. Hold "command" and "R" and turn on the computer (I believe this is recovery HD from the internet because it wasn't working from my hard drive)
    3. After a few unsuccessful tries, and repeating #1 and #2, I finally got a window to reinstall Lion. This took about an hour to download and after that things went as expected.
As long as Lion is more stable than it was on my first install, which it seems to be now, I'll just stay with it. After this experience, I would say "make sure you need the features in Lion, and that all your current programs are compatible with Lion before you forge ahead."
    Thanks again

  • Migrate essbase app from 6 to 9

planning to migrate the app from essbase 6 to esbase 9.to a whole new server.
Any issues with that...any doc on migration from 6 would be useful.
    its urgent

I started to migrate from 6.6 to 9.3.1 and it went quite smooth. What I have done:
    Installed the server.
Used the config tool and removed shared services registration.
    Copied essbase.cfg to new installation.
Had to add the env variables manually on AIX from the hyperionenv.doc.
    Installed the eas server.
Used config tool for config and deployment of eas on std settings.
Installed the eas client and used the migration tool to migrate some databases to the new server from a 6.6 (6.6 running on different machine than 9.3)
Tested our batch processing for data load, security transfers, data staging etc. which uses some api interfaces and ESSCMD and maxl scripts. All without any problems. All settings were kept the same as on the old systems (essbase.cfg, db settings, app settings).

  • Got new iMac, I had completed the migration from PC to new Apple computer, but still unable to see the files on the iTunes

got new iMac, I had completed the migration from PC to new iMac, but still unable to see all the apps and music that were saved from the old PC to new iMac. Please help.

My guess is the 30-day trial period has expired but you didn't remove the trial before installing the full version. The files to delete are the iWork ’09 folder from the main HD > Applications; the iWork ’09 folder in HD > Library > Application Support & the individual iWork application plist files found in HD > Users > (your account) > Library > Preferences for each user.
Yvan Koenig has written an AppleScript that removes the files. You can find it on his iDisk in For_iWork > iWork '09 > uninstall iWork '09.zip.

  • OSX 8.2 new Retina Macbook Pro won't wake from sleep.

Since upgrade to OSX 8.2 new Retina Macbook Pro won't wake from sleep. Tablet lights are on in morning and fans running like crazy, but it requires hard quit and start. Tried with no apps running, no change. It was fine before this last update. Wasn't the recent firmware update supposed to fix this issue? It seems to have started one for me.

I have the exact same problem with my Macbook Pro OS 10.8.4. What happens is: I work on the train, press cmd/alt + eject to put to sleep..pop it in my bag...get home or office... open the lid...and nothing! Battery indicator shows I have plenty of juice but it will not wake up no matter what key I press.
The only difference between use on the train and home/office is the plugging in of peripherals and mains power. It happens sparadicially, perhaps once or twice a week and I always send a 'panic report', so somewhere there will be approx 20 reports of this fault at Apple.

  • Migrate Oracle Apps Forms to J2EE

    Hi,
I need to migrate Oracle Apps(11i) Forms to J2EE.
I went through Oracle Partners who provide these migration tools but none provides trial version to test/use.
    How do I migrate forms.
Or is there any way so that I can replace forms with my custom screens?
    Need your help.

Its probably too long an answer to write here but I always like to start with the WHY?
The one thing that is fact is that this will cost you considerable time and effort so you have to be very clear on your reasons. Furthermore, there is no "magic bullet". There is no tool or solution that can "with one click" migrate your application - unless your application is Emp/Dept of course ;o)
You also have to seriously consider the need (infact I would say REQUIREMENT) that any migration MUST rearchitect. A Forms app and a J2EE app are very different, if you don't re-architect then you are re-implementing Forms in Java (in which case, why bother).
If you go to http://otn.oracle.com/goto/formsmodernize there is information that we in Oracle see as the most likely approach to succeed - which is retain an investment in Forms while you build up skills/services/functionality in your new system
I'd suggest spending a couple of hours reading this information and then if you have further questions you can come back to us.
    Regards
    Grant
