Migrate SBS 2008 to Server 2012 R2 Std
Thank you for your reply. The Setup is a 2012 HV with three VM's = DC, Exchange and Terminal Server. The Exchange will be 2010. It was decided to stay with Emails on the Server by the company director, we don't require office 365
I think the migration of 2008 to 2012 dc should be fine, but it was migrating the exchange 2007 to exchange 2010 that I was not sure about, my notes I have were actually for 2003 sbs's that were going to use office 365 so that's why I was enquiring after the email migration
thanks
Hello
We have a SBS 2008 Server that is going to be migrated to Server 2012 R2. The 2012 has two virtual machines - one for the new Domain and the other is for email exchange. We have instructions for migrating a SBS 2003 Server to 2012 Server that we were told was successful - can I apply these same steps to a SBS 2008 Server? IT involves promotion 2012 to DC, migrating AD (FSMO, scheme master global catalog) and migrate dhcp.
for the emails, is there a MS guide to migrating SBS 2008 mailboxes to the 2012 R2 email server?
Thanks

SBS 2008 to Server 2012 R2 Active Directory Migration
Is there a tool that i can use to migrate Active Directory from SBS 2008 to Server 2012 R2?
There is no special tool for your situation. While there is a tool called ADMT that you may see mentioned if you search enough, it isn't really well suited for what you want.
With that said, there is also no *need* for a tool as I've already said. Nor do you need to recreate the users and have mismatched SIDs. You will add the 2012 machine to your existing domain and make it a domain controller. Yes, that means you will have
two DCs (for a time.) This is how larger organizations handle multiple DCs all the time, and they obviously don't go and create the same user on each DC. That is where the domain replication comes in. Your new server will be a DC and will replicate
all of the users *and* SIDs from the existing SBS server.
Then, when you are ready, you decommission the SBS 2008 server gracefully and the new 2012 server becomes your sole DC, but has AD completely intact. It is a tried and true practice, both within and outside of the SBS world, and has been done many many times. -
Migrating PDC role from SBS 2008 to Server 2012
Greetings everyone
Are there any special considerations or steps that need be done when elevating my BDC running Server 2012 from a PDC running SBS 2008? We are wanting to remove the SBS machine entirely as we no longer need it and could possibly be of use to one of our clients
down the road.
Thank You
Additional Info: We have already migrated Exchange to the cloud and is no longer hosted on our SBS server. The only function the SBS server has at the moment is being the PDC.If you haven't seen it already you'll probably want to check out
http://blogs.technet.com/b/infratalks/archive/2012/09/07/transition-from-small-business-server-to-standard-windows-server.aspx which describes the entire process, though obviously in your case you don't need to worry about the Exchnage side of things.
The main thing in your case will moving the FSMO roles over to the new server so the old SBS box is no longer required. There's a link to the process in that blog post, though as I understand it when 2012 is the destination the recommended route is to grab
the roles from 2012 rather than give them up from 2008. There's a good step by step guide to the process here
http://www.waronerrors.com/kb/how-to-transfer-fsmo-roles-from-windows-server-2003--2008-to-windows-server-2012.aspx though obviously the main thing to note is that as soon as you move the FSMO roles you have 21 days in which to complete the migration. After
that time the SBS box will automatically restart periodically (I think after an hour from memory). -
Migrating Small Business Server 2008 to Server 2012 R2 Standard
Hi All,
We are going to migrate SBS 2008 to Server 2012 R2 Standard for one of our customer.
We cannot find a proper guide to do the migration. Any idea for this process.
We already migrated email to Office 365. We are going to migrate Active Directory and Shared data to new Server 2012 R2 Standard.
Thanks,

Migration SBS 2008 - Essentials 2012
Hi,
We plan to migrate a SBS 2008 to Essentials 2012 with Office 365 ( bad idea to remove exchange from essentials ).
If we plan to use the old SBS server later on, what shoud we install as OS on this machine : a Windows 2012 Standard ( wo CALS ) , ..... ?
Thanks in advance
Regards
DirkHi,
Do you mean you want to keep the old physical server with a new Windows Server OS installed in the domain after migration? If so, you could purchase any standard version Windows Server and
join it to the domain, make it as a DC or just a member server. If you want to use the latest version program, maybe Windows Server 2012 Standard is the best choice.

Migrate SBS 2008 to new hardware
We have an SBS 2008 installation and are testing a disaster recovery solution by re-installing in Migration Mode.
Step 5 in the migration document from Microsoft discusses;
Demote and remove the Source Server from the network
We'd like to fully test this and get the backup box up and running before signing it off as a working solution.
Our concern is that, even if we isolate the test machine on a difference subnet from our production LAN, there is some kind of licensing consequence for our running box - via some kind of de-activation signal sent over the net, perhaps - should we continue
through the final steps.
Can anyone confirm or deny whether any kind of de-activation occurs? Perhaps paranoia, but thought best to check since we really can't have our live systems shut down.Hi,
Before going further, would you please provide more detailed information about your concern? It’s difficult to understand your needs for me with the information you mentioned. For details about
how to migrate SBS 2008 to new hardware, please refer to the following articles.

Difference between SQL SERVER 2008 & SQL SERVER 2012 & SQL SERVER 2014
Difference between SQL SERVER 2008 & SQL SERVER 2012 & SQL SERVER 2014 ?
What sort of databases do you have OLTP? Data warehouse? What requirements do you have for High Availability?
The main features for SQL 2012/2014, as I see it:
o Support for window functions, which makes it possible to write fast queries for running totals, sliding windows etc.
o Columnstore indexes, which can speed up your data warehouse enormously. But of no interest for OLTP. Only writable in SQL 2014.
o AlwaysOn and Availability Groups, a vastly improve story for high availability and disaster recovery.
o try_convert/try_cast, you can now easily filter out values from a column which does not convert to a number. A small but essential feature.
o In memory-OLTP, a new in-memory engine in SQL 2014. This far with very limited feature set, and quite specialised.
Of the points above, the second and third require Enterprise Edition, the first and fourth are in all editions. For the last, I don't think Microsoft has announced anything yet.
There are also new stuff in the BI area, but that's out of my league.
And, oh, there is a new licensing model - which I think is holding more than one customer back.

Cloning Windows Server 2012 R2 Std for Tier-1 Microsoft application template ?
Hi People,
Can anyone here please suggest me what is the best way to clone Windows Server 2012 R2 Std edition to be a golden VM image or template ?
I want to use this VM image that I have created and patched so that I can deploy Tier-1 server application like : 2013 SharePoint server, Lync, Exchange Server 2013 and also domain controllers.
The Underlying Hypervisor is VMware vSphere.
/* Server Support Specialist */Hi,
Sysprep is a commend line tool that removes unique information from your Windows installation so that you can safely reuse that image on a different computer.

Windows Server 2008 Ent to Windows server 2012 R2 std Migration
Dear All,
We have windows server 2008 x64 Ent with SP2 it's working fine and perfectly . Presently we implemented new data center also we installed windows server 2012R2 Std . we would like to migrate windows form old data center to new data center .
I would like to tell you my current setup :
we have Windows 2008 Ent SP2 server 3 number all are GC domain controller it's working perfectly .
IP Address : 192.168.33.121 , 192.168.33.122 , 192.168.33.123
we have more than 2000 domain users and PC's all clients PC's are using static IP with domain DNS
My new data center Server windows 2012R2 STD
Static IP : 192.168.200.115
Here my doubt :
1. How can we migrate
2. how can we assign new DNS address to all clients more than 2000 PC's
Please could you tell me best way to solve this issue ..
Best Regards
SubashHello
tip:
1 check all old application, server /like old Linux samba, exch2003/ to support 2012 dc
2 all firewall add same rule as old DC /if have domain trust open firewall./
3 prompt to dc and gc the new server
4 check DNS server /DNS forwarder if have/ and AD logs
5 run BPA for AD and DNS
6 create gpo or startup script to add/change dns settings on client.
sorry my english -
This is what I have:
A very outdated machine running a small domain, SBS 2003 and Exchange - this is the ONLY server currently.
This is what my boss ordered:
A Dell R210 II machine with Server 2012 Standard (and I downloaded the trial for Exchange 2013).
He wants the old server completely replaced and gone - with everything moved over (including Exchange) to the new machine. The main reason for the upgrade is that not all users can access email on their machines (Macs, new versions of Outlook, etc.)
I have set up a new standalone server before but never migrated one - and I've found that going from SBS2003/Exchange2003 to Server2012/Exchange2013 is not simple in the least.
I thought I could just set up the new server as a DC on the domain and have everything replicated to it from the source server. Then I could decommission the old server. I have been told that 1) I can't upgrade Exchange 2003 to 2013 and 2) that I shouldn't
put Exchange on a DC. What do you do if you only have the one server?Hi,

Migrating Certificate Services to Server 2012 in a 2008 R2 AD Domain
We have a Windows 2008 R2 SP1 Active Directory domain. Our Enterprise Certificate server is running on Windows 2003 R2. We'd like to introduce a Windows 2012 server into our existing domain and migrate the Certificate Services to that new box. Are there
any 'gotchas' to implementing Certificate Cervices on a Windows Server 2012 system in a Windows 2008 R2 SP1 domain that we should be concerned with?
Orange County District AttorneyHi,
You can migrate Certificate Services to another server but server name should be same. Also changing the server name which has CA role installed is not recommended.

File Server Migration from 2008 Standard to 2012 Standard accross different subnet
Hi
Im going to migrate File server from Windows 2008 Standard server to Windows 2012 Standard . Source and Destination Servers are on different subnets . According to this
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/jj863566.aspx I cannot use Server migrations tool in-built into 2012 . Im not sure if I can use file server migration toolkit 1.2?.
Also my Domain controllers are mixture of Windows 2003, 2008 , 2008 R2 and I've upgraded the schema level to 2012 R2 . Is there anything else I need to be aware of ?
Can anyone please recommended best way to go about doing this migration . Is file server migration toolkit 1.2 is compatible ? .
Only reason I don't want to use Robocopy to this is because If I miss a small setting etc then I will face unwanted downtime.
I presume Migration toolkit will also create all the Quotas etc on the destination server .
Thanks
mumtazHi mumtaz,
We could use file server migration toolkit 1.2 to migrate file server between the two subnets. In order to maintain security settings after the migration, please ensure the security of files and folders after they are migrated to a target file server, the File
Server Migration Wizard applies permissions that are the same as or more restrictive than they were on the source files and folders, depending on the option you select.
In the meantime, quota cannot migrate by this tool but we can export and import the quota using dirquota command. Export the templates as xml and then import to new server:
dirquota template export /file:C:\test.xml
dirquota template import /file:C:\test.xml
For more detailed information, please see:

Domain Controller, DHCP, DNS Migration from 2008 r2 to 2012 Essentials
I would like to migrate Domain Controller, DHCP, and DNS functions to a new 2012 Essentials server in a 2008 r2 domain. I would like the 2008 r2 server to remain as applications server. Is it possible to do this? I've seen in TechNet
a reference to this type of migration, but am concerned about the reference that after 21 days the 2008 will shut down. Is it that the server will shut down or the Domain Controller function on the 2008 will shut down? I will need the 2008 setup as is
for our application server, so I want to be sure that the migration will not interfer with that.As long as your existing server is not also an SBS or other Essentials server, it'll be fine. The shutdown after 21 days occurs when multiple SBS or Essentials servers are on the same domain.

Windows SBS 2003 to Server 2012 Essentials R2
I am tasked with upgrading from an existing SBS 2003 server to 2012 R2 Essentials. Currently the 2012 box is on the network, fresh install but I'm encountering issues from there. I joined it to the domain and now when it boots up it goes through the process
of configuring it to the domain. However, it simply stops with the error "Configuration Encountered Some Issues". Could someone provide some guidance? Thanks!
