Migrate to MacBook Air from iMac and keep them synched

Dear Mac Geniuses -
I have an iMac (24'' early 2009 model) and am thinking of getting a MacBook Air (haven't decided on the 11.6'' or 13.3'' version yet, but tilting towards the smaller size) when we go to the States for Xmas for about a month from overseas. I also have a 2 TB TimeCapsule which acts as the router and backs up my 640 GB iMac hard drive.
Since my iTunes, Photos and loads of personalized content is on the iMac (which I won't bring with me to USA, when I buy the MBA), I would love to take the TimeCapsule and restore from it.
This would be the first time I would use the TimeCapsule for this purpose, so I would appreciate some advice:
1. Is it possible to restore from TC to MBA with my iMac configuration?
2. What's the best way to manage the 640 GB on the iMac v the 128 GB (or 256 GB on 13'') on MBA? I have a couple of 500 GB hard drives I could use.
3. Once I am back from USA, is there a way to sync back the changes we made in iTunes, FlipVideo, Photos?
4. Is there a way to maintain two versions of iTunes, Photos, etc?
I appreciate that questions 3 & 4 are mostly on a different topic than 1&2, and are thus lesser priority. What I need to figure out in the next two weeks is how to take all I need from my iMac for the duration of the trip.
Thanks everyone!
BR,
AK

How do I create a clone on the external HD that can be used by Setup Assistant
The Restore tab of Disk Utility (see #7 in [Formatting, Partitioning, Verifying, and Repairing Disks|http://web.me.com/pondini/AppleTips/DU.html]), or 3rd-party apps CarbonCopyCloner or SuperDuper.
[CarbonCopyCloner|http://www.bombich.com> is donationware; [SuperDuper|http://www.shirt-pocket.com/SuperDuper/SuperDuperDescription.html] has a free version, but you need the paid one (about $30) to do updates instead of full replacements, or scheduling.
(and more importantly, is there a way to select what wil be put on that clone)?
You really don't need to, since +Setup Assistant+ lets you omit certain things.
You can't omit things with Disk Utility. You can wIth CCC and SD, but since you're going to use this with +Setup Assistant,+ omit only things inside the top-level folders inside user home folders (such as Pictures, Movies, Music), not those folders themselves. CCC is pretty intuitive, and has pretty good help, too. I don't use SD, but I understand it's also easy to use.
I guess the alternative method is to create a TimeMachine backup on my external 500 GB hard drive. Is there a way to select what I back up to it?
You can omit things there, too, via +Time Machine Preferences > Options.+ For this purpose, though, I'd go with the clone, since you can start up from it to be sure it works, and everything you didn't omit is there and working properly.
The backups on your Time Capsule will be your "insurance" in case something awful happens.
If you don't already have a portable external, I can recommend the LaCie "Rugged" series: http://www.lacie.com/us/products/range.htm?id=10036 I have one of these, as do several other folks here, and they get good reviews, too. They claim you can drop one +2.2 meters+ without damage. I do a lot of testing, but have no intention of testing that.

  • I have a macbook air late 2010 and keep getting a warning that my hard drive is full and to delete things so I purchased a external hard drive (1TB) but I'm just not sure what the correct way to transfer and store files to the external drive is. First MAC

I purchased a macbook air about 5 months ago and lately i keep recieving a warning that the hard drive or disk is full and that I will need to move items to trash in order to free up space on it. I purchased a external hard drive 1 TB but I'm very new to mac and ios and unsure as to how I'm suppose to transfer my files (video, pics, music etc.) from my mac over to the external hard drive in the correct way so I won't end up deleting them permenately or screwing anything up with my mac as far as the applications and programs being able to run. Am I supposed to just copy to the external hard drive and then move to and empty the trash? That's pretty much all I could come up with, but then what if i need or want to access that file again at a later time. Also, I have an i Phone and i pad so with i cloud it automatically syncs all my purcheses and if i delete something from itunes on my mac it deletes from my ipad.
I'd appreciate any kind of input i think im just a little lost here. I have to say i love my Mac and wouldn't trade it for anything (except maybe a macbook pro w/more memory)... Is there something I'm missing???

To free up hard drive space the best bet is to move data files that you don't need access to all the time. Likely candidates are music, video, and photos. Things like word processing and spreadsheet files can also be moved but they tend not to be very large and so don't free up much space. The problem with moving the above mentioned files is that iTunes and iPhoto need to know where the files are stored.
Here's an article explaining how to move the iTunes folder. You can move the iPhoto library using the Finder but there is a slight complication. Start iPhoto, open the Preferences and click on the Advanced tab. The first option is "Copy items to the iPhoto Library". If this option is checked, copy the iPhoto library to your external folder (drag it from the Pictures folder to your external drive) and then delete it from your Picture folder. If this option is not checked, it is a bit more complicated and we'll need to talk a bit.

  • Migrating to MacBook Air from Pro utilizing time machine

    Hi All -
I just got the basic macbook air. I wanted to migrate from my Pro to the air using my time machine backups, but I was wondering if this would mean that 50gb of local backups tag along? As it is, I have 80gb of data. I'd like to not fill up my 128gb.

Local backups are just that - local to the computer. When your computer backs up to TimeMachine it saves what has been changed since the last backup - not including caches, etc. and that would include local backups.

  • Pictures don't upload onto my macbook air from ipad and iphone via icloud

The pictures I take on Iphone and Ipad often just don't transfer to my macbook air via Icloud. Some do, some don't, its very
inconsistent - some just never upload.
Any ideas? I think that all the settings on all machines are correct..! :-)
    thanks,

    Hi Russell,
I'm assuming you have iCloud activated on your Mac. Try signing out & then logging back in on your Mac. Are you using Photostream within iPhoto or Aperture...or both?

  • How to add Lion to macbook air from Imac?

How can I upgrade Lion remotely to my Air using my Imac file sharing?

You need to set up an Apple App Store account in order to be able to dowload software from the App Store. An App Store account requires an Apple Id (normally this is your email address). If you don't have one you can set one up. Note this is the same id you use for iTunes so if you have an iTunes account use those credentials.
If you have a new MBA 2011 (i.e. one bought after about July this year) it will already be running Lion. To make sure go to the Apple menu (top left corner of screen) and select About this Mac. If the version of Mac OS X shown is 10.7 then that is Lion.

  • Retrieving music from icloud and keeping it

I upgraded my phone and subsequently all my music went to the cloud. Can anyone tell me how to retrieve this for itunes and my iphone and stop it disappearing again. thanks

If you want to delete songs from iTunes and keep them on the iPod you need to change the update option of your iPod to "manually manage music and videos". The content of iTunes and the iPod are not syncronised in this mode so the two can be different, you can get details here:
    Managing content manually on iPod
    iPod - Syncing Music
One major word of caution. If you delete songs or videos from your computer and have no back up other than the iPod you will risk losing them permanently if your iPod fails or you find you have to restore it to solve a problem. You should consider investing in an additional internal or external hard drive to store/back up your music. Alternatively at the very least back up anything you can't replace such as iTunes downloads to CD or DVD: How to back up your media in iTunes
Something else to be aware of when using an iPod in manual mode is that the "Do Not Disconnect" message will remain on the display until you physically eject the device. In that case use Safely Remove Hardware icon in the Windows system tray on your desktop or check this link: Safely Disconnect IPod

Take the system to an Apple store to be fixed or replaced as the one you have has defective hardware.

i have nothing on this macbook air just iPhoto and iTunes and the error startup dic full message keeps coming up and the storage is full of other i don't know what to do.how do i delete all of this?

First, empty the Trash if you haven't already done so. Then reboot. That will temporarily free up some space.
According to Apple documentation, you need at least 9 GB of available space on the startup volume (as shown in the Finder Info window) for normal operation. You also need enough space left over to allow for growth of your data. There is little or no performance advantage to having more available space than the minimum Apple recommends. Available storage space that you'll never use is wasted space.
To locate large files, you can use Spotlight as described here. That method may not find large folders that contain a lot of small files.
You can also use a tool such as OmniDiskSweeper (ODS) to explore your volume and find out what's taking up the space. You can delete files with it, but don't do that unless you're sure that you know what you're deleting and that all data is safely backed up. That means you have multiple backups, not just one.
Proceed further only if the problem hasn't been solved.
ODS can't see the whole filesystem when you run it just by double-clicking; it only sees files that you have permission to read. To see everything, you have to run it as root.
    Back up all data now.
Install ODS in the Applications folder as usual.
Triple-click the line of text below to select it, then copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C):sudo /Applications/OmniDiskSweeper.app/Contents/MacOS/OmniDiskSweeper
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V). You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning not to screw up. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
I don't recommend that you make a habit of doing this. Don't delete anything while running ODS as root. If something needs to be deleted, make sure you know what it is and how it got there, and then delete it by other, safer, means.
When you're done with ODS, quit it and also quit Terminal.

  • I purchased a macbook air from someone on craigslist, and when i try to download iPhoto, it tells me that these apps were already designated to another apple id.

I purchased a macbook air from someone on craigslist, and when i try to download iPhoto, it tells me that these apps were already designated to another apple id. any way to reset the app store from thinking it's still alligned with him? Lion was reset already, but this isn't. If i download on my mac mini, will i then be able to retrieve the download on my air?

    Hi...
On the MBAir drag the iPhoto app to the Trash, empty the Trash.
Then try purchasing and downloading iPhoto.
You can re download iPhoto on all your authorized Macs. To authorize the MBAir, launch iTunes. From the menu bar click Store > Authorize This Mac. You will be prompted for your Apple ID and password.
Open the App Store. From the menu bar click Store > Sign In
Click Purchases from the top of the App Store window.
Select which apps you want to re download. Then right or control click where you see Installed  then click Install.
Make sure and use the same Apple ID used for the original purchase.

  • I just got my MacBook Pro a month ago. However I am realizing I need more hard drive space due to aps and programs.  I use am external but am concerned about the space. Is there a way to upgrade my hard drive from apple and keep my warranty valid?

That would depend on whether your model actually has a hard drive. If you have the new 2013 Retina model, then you have a fixed storage device built-in that cannot be modified after purchase.

If you didn't purchase the extended warranty, AppleCare, you are not entitled to any repairs free of charge once the 1 year warranty expires.
