Migrated files - can't find them

i just migrated a bunch of files from my old computer
but i was never told where they went to

You didn't provide much information about how you migrated your files, the model of iMac you have, or the version of Mac OS X that you are running. If you used the Windows Migration Assistant then the following article may be helpful, especially the comment that reads "Note: This process will create a new user account on your Mac to contain the Windows PC information that is migrated over.  It will not merge the information with an existing user account on the Mac."
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4796
If you open a new finder window, then locate and click on your iMac in the left hand column under 'Devices' you should see the hard drive and any other attached volumes appear in the next column to the right. Click on your hard drive (probably called Macintosh HD) and you'll see a list of files/folders on your hard drive. Click on the 'Users' folder and you should see a user folder created for your Windows Migration Assistant data. You may need to set the permissions for the folder using an administrator account. If you are having issues importing video files into iMovie, you may want to double check the following article just to make sure the process is the same:

  • Lost files, can't find them but they're there!

all my files have disappeared from my powerbook g4 but the memory use implies they're still there
on pcs in the past it's been possible to turn the clock back so to speak and restore the computer to it's state at a previous date, ie you mess something up bad but just tell the computer to pretend it's yesterday and it resets to it's status then
anyone know if there's a similar function on the powerbook g4 or os x 10.3.9? or even any other way i might retrieve the data. i would have just written it off as lost but the memory status suggests the information is still there
any help will be greatly appreciated

Try "Data Rescue II" in trial mode and see if it sees your files. If it does, assess whether saving those files is crucial or whether you can live without it.
The software is $99 and is available as an instant download and you can get up and running right away. You can also get it via mail order (I think downloading costs less, since no box or disc), and also at the Apple Store and other Mac software resellers.
It saved my behind after I had a disk go "bad" due to a login/console issue. Best $99 I ever spent. I tried TechTool Deluxe to repair the drive first (which did more damage), and then DiskWarrior, the tried-and-true solution (and it couldn't do anything for me because of the damage TechTool Deluxe did), and with both not working... Mac OS X's Disk Utility couldn't do anything either... Data Rescue II got all my files.
Trouble is with this method, you can't just get started again. You have to reinstall the OS, all your apps, etc. Using TechTool Deluxe or DiskWarrior is supposed to fix the directory issues and let you get up and running like normal. Which I had hoped for, but it didn't happen that way.
So, rescuing the data was the best route, since the only solution for my problem was to reformat the drive and reinstall everything. And without Data Rescue, my files and everything would have gone with it.

I used migration assistant and my ethernet cable to move data and apps from my 5-yr old Intel-based iMac to my brand new Intel-based iMac running OS Lion. The old machine was running OS 10.5.8.  Not all my files transferred (or I can't find them).  I've seen recommendations to select the old computer in System Preferences, but that didn't work.  Help.  Thanks!

IMO, wrong choice. Start over, using a FireWire cable and following the steps in Pondini's Setup New Mac guide.

  • Moved jpeg files to other folder, now iPhoto can't find them

I dragged/dropped some original jpeg files into a new folder to aggregate certain files together, but since they are now in a different folder iPhoto 9 can't find them. The thumbnails in iPhoto still remain, but results in the large black/grey "!" when I try to open them. I'd rather not rebuild the enormity of my entire photo library over this, so is there some other way to re-link thumbnails to files?
iTunes makes this easy with music. When I click on a file name and it can't find the file, it offers to allow me to locate the file myself, and then it re-establishes the link between the iTunes library item and the file. No problem.
How does one go about doing this in iPhoto for, say, a couple of dozen files without having to start over with an ENTIRE rebuild? I know exactly where the files are, and it seems ridiculous that iPhoto isn't equipped to track the whereabouts of an unchanged file that's simply been dragged from one folder to another.

Did you do the moving of the image file in the Finder or do you have a reference library as asked by Larry? In either case moving the files is a recipe for disaster as you've found out. You must either move the files back to their original locations or try to get those photos back into iPhoto as follows:
1 - Find the folder you moved the files into and COPY it to the Desktop.
2 - in iPhoto delete the photos that you're having the problems with as you normally would even though you can't see see them. Also delete all the photos that are in the folder you moved the other files into.
3 - drag the folder on the Desktop into iPhoto to import them as one event. If you get a duplicate warning I'd let it import the duplicate and use Duplicate Annihilator to find them so you can cull out the duplicate you don't want.
Other than that you might have to start over from scratch as follows:
Creating a new library while preserving the Events from the original library.
1 - Move the existing library folder to the desktop
2 - Open the library package like this.
3 - Launch iPhoto and, when asked, select the option to create a new library.
4 - Drag the Originals folder from the iPhoto Library on the desktop into the open iPhoto window.

  • Files Renamed when importing to LR4 and now can't find them in LR3

    Help!  What should I do???
Yesterday I installed LR 4 Beta.  I had a folder with 300 images in it on LR 3, obviously all files had names.  I imported these photos into LR4 to work with LR4 and they were renamed in the process.  Now in my LR3 folder, all the files still have there old names and the "missing photo ?" and I assume that's because the name has been changed and LR3 can't find them.  Any thoughts on an easy fix?
    Thanks,
    Matthew Kraus

Thanks so much for helping me with this.
I must admit, I didn't pay too much attention when importing this "test"
group of photos to LR4, therein lies my problem.  Now that I look at the
    import settings that were used:
    1. Files were not added or copied, they were "moved" to a new location and
    also renamed.
    2. Files were renamed starting with "264" using my regular import template.
Listed below are the first 10 photos with their original LR3 and he
    changed LR4 names.
    1201_001 changed to 1201_264-2
    1201_002 changed to 1201_265-2
    1201_003 changed to 1201_266-2
    1201_004 changed to 1201_267-2
    1201_005-Edit-Edit changed to 1201_268-2
    1201_005-Edit changed to 1201_269-2
    1201_005-Edit changed to 1201_270-2
    1201_005-Edit-Edit-2 changed to 1201_271-2
I have a back up of my images on an EHD from several days ago which has the
original file names, but this backup only has 203 of the 268 images I
    imported yesterday and are renamed.
    Thanks again,
    Matthew Kraus

  • Copied files to USB HDD - now can't find them!

I had to reinstall my wife's macbook so I backed up all her files to a USB HDD formatted as MS-DOS (FAT) [according to disk utility]
I then reinstalled and tried to find the files which do not show up on the USB HDD (shoulda checked!)
I've seen posts alluding to having the drive formatted Journalised but they all refer to having done that FIRST.
Are my files history? Is there any way to get them back? Help!

  • Does anyone know where the iWeb data files are located or what they are called?  I can't find them.  I looked in Finder for files named the same as my website, but found nothing.  Any help would be appreciated.

Does anyone know where the iWeb data files are located or what they are called?  I can't find them.  I looked in Finder for files named the same as my website, but found nothing.  Any help would be appreciated.

If you erased or replaced your hard drive since iWeb was cancelled, then they are gone. Otherwise, if you have maintained backups then check those.
Usually such files are in the /Home/Library/ folder or a sub-folder.
    Exposing the /Home/Library/ Folder
Pick one of the following methods:
    A. This method will make the folder visible permanently. Open the Terminal application in your Utilities folder and paste the following at the command prompt:
    chflags nohidden ~/Library
    Press RETURN.
    B. Click on the Desktop, press the OPTION (⌥) button, select Library from the Finder's Go menu.
    C. Select Go To Folder from the Finder's Go menu. Paste the following in the path field:
    ~/Library
    Press the Go button.

  • I am using Garageband and saving my tunes as iTunes files but can´t find them in iTunes on my computer after syncing. Where are they?

I am using Garageband and saving my tunes as iTunes files but can´t find them in iTunes on my computer after syncing. Where are they?

My answer in the older thread is still valid
Maybe the "iTunes Music" folder is hidden.
Please open Terminal and issue the following command
    ls -ladO /epoche/Music/iTunes/iTunes\ Music
you should get a line similar to this
    drwxrwxrwx  13 yourusername  staff  hidden 442 12 Mar 21:49 /epoche/Music/iTunes/iTunes Music
Numbers, date and time may differ.
If you see hidden then the folder is hidden. To unhide "iTunes Music", in Terminal issue the following command
    chflags nohidden /epoche/Music/iTunes/iTunes\ Music

    From the menu bar, select
     ▹ System Preferences ▹ Spotlight ▹ Privacy
The list of items excluded from Spotlight indexing is shown (it may be empty.) Click the plus (“+”) icon to add an item to the list. Select your boot volume (under DEVICES) and add it to the list. Then remove it from the list by selecting it and clicking the minus (“-“) icon.
Spotlight will rebuild the index. If you try to do a Spotlight search now from the magnifying-glass icon in the top right corner of the display, a pulsing dot will appear in the icon. When the dot disappears, the indexing is complete.
