Migrated from iBook - MacBook, now iPhoto is empty

I just purchased a new MacBook after 5 years of using an iBook G4 (running Leopard). I used Migration Assistant to move everything to the new computer, and for the most part everything transferred perfectly.
However, one HUGE problem is that I cannot seem to access my photos. I know they are on the computer, because I can open them in Preview. But when I click my Pictures folder in Finder, it automatically opens iPhoto and it says "No Photos" - it's totally empty. When I attempt to drag and drop my photos from preview into iPhoto, it says I can't do that because the file already exists in iPhoto... so where is it?! My iBook did not have iPhoto, so I'm new to the program, and wondering if that's maybe part of the migration problem.
What can I do?
Should I put all the photos from my old iBook onto my external hard drive and import them manually into iPhoto? If so, will it tell me again that it's impossible because the file already exists?
Or is there another option to simply make the photos show up?

migration assistant somes times does not transfer the iPhoto library correctly
quit iPhoto and move the bad library to the desktop (you will delete it later) and connect the two computers together (network, firewire target mode, etc) or use an external Hard disk and drag the iPhoto library intact as a single entity from the old system to the pictures folder of the new - launch iPhoto and all will be well - once everything is tested delete the iPhoto bad iPhoto library on teh desktop

  • Migration from old macbook air to new macbook air...beware

Although spent hours on the phone with Apple and bought necessary cables, they were not able to get migration assistant to work using ethernet.
You can't use firewire as new macbook air doesn't have it. You can use thunderbold as old macbook air doesn't have it.
Finally I was told to use Time Machine. After connecting old macbook air backup to new macbook air and using migration assistant, I got a message saying (essentially) 'you can use this from an old mac'. Spent more time on the phone with Senior tech support. They had no clue.
Finally called the store. Genius said, you can't migrate from old macbook air with Snow Leopard to new macbook air with Lion. You must upgrade old macbook air to Lion first.
GEEZ, do you think someone at tech support might have mentioned that DAYS ago?

    That is bad info.
The MBA that I am using right now used a TM backup from my old MBP, which was running Snow Leopard. Absolutely no problems using Setup Assistant to import all the apps, data, user settings. The session performed flawlessly, and took about an hour to move everything.
If at all possible, use Setup Assitant, rather than Migration Assistant. The transition will be seamless.

  • Migration from old MacBook Pro to newer, lose iPhoto folders. Any cure?

In a recent migration using migration assistant from old MacBook Pro core 2 duo (10.6.8) to a newer quad core i7 (10.8.3), when I opened iPhoto for the first time and nothing happened. I then imported all my photos from the old iPhoto, and lost all folders I had. Now it seems I have to redo all folders. Any cure? I could do a clean install if there is a solution.

Sign up for the free trial, and use the office applications online for up to 30 days.
Granted, they online versions won't be IDENTICAL to the Mac versions you're used to, but it will get you through until you get back home, and you SHOULD have the ability to save the docs in a format you can use with your Mac apps later.
Another alternative is the free OpenOffice.org and similar open-source Office applications that can read and write MS-Office file formats.

  • Migrating from iBook to MacBook Pro

Unable to access my pictures, music and documents folders that I migrated from my iBook. It tells me that I have insufficient access privileges. I haven't been able to figure out how to deal with that.
    Does anyone have any suggestions

Are the folders in the right place (ie, under your own user folder)? If so, you can fix the permissions on them by highlighting the folders, clicking cmd-i to open Get Info, and going to the Permissions tab, setting yourself as owner, with read/write permissions. You should also click "Apply to enclosed items".
Or, did the migration create a new user with those folders? If so, you can log in as that user and copy the folders first to the Shared folder, then log in as your other user and copy them to the correct places - and then correct the permissions as before.

  • HT3989 i've migrated from my macbook pro to iMac and now some patches of the exs24 instrument do not work in logic

    hi community,
I recently bought a new imac and migrated form my macbook pro. I'm running logic and when i opened one of my logic project files i've been working on, some files (mostly exs24 instrument files) would not load up with the project file...a message was displayed with each file that could not be "detected" with an option to "Continue" or "Search again"...if you "search again" nothing happens and if you "continue" the files ends up loaded up with the exs24 instrument on some tracks not reading the patch file? This also happened with some audio files which would not load with a logic project file? I really do not want to reinstall and risk losing anything more...please help

    Hi
Migration Assistant seems not to work well for some with Logic. Probably the easiest way to sort this would be to re-install the content.
You could check Library:Application Support:Logic and Library:Application Support:GarageBand for the "missing" files to see if the really are there.
If they are, it may be a Spotlight issue, which can be fixed by 're-building' the Spotlight Index.

  • Files Migrated From iBook G4 to PowerMac G5 Won't Open

I can't open my files which I migrated from my iBook G4 to my PowerMac G5. It says permission denied. Both computers have the same operating system.
I repaired permissions and now I can't even open the folder. There's a red circle with a minus sign next to all the folders except the documents folder. However nothing shows in it except when I click on Get Info then I can see the MB of contents.
Now I'm wondering what will happen when I migrate all my PowerMac G5's files over to my new iMac. Will I have the same problem?
Luckily the files on my iBook G4 are small enough I can put them on a CD. I can't say the same for my G5 files.

Normally Migration assistant has no problems.
There are caveats migrating from PPC to Intel, I had no problems, but see Kappy's fine/detailed "A Basic Guide for Migrating to Intel-Macs"...

  • I have just migrated from ibook

sorry if i'm behind the times, but i just used time machine/migration to set up new (2nd hand) macbook pro from my old i'book
as i was curious about the new computer before i was ready to migrate, i set up an account in my name.  bit later on i did the migration using same name/passwords.  the migration would not allow me to use the same user name so i called the new one:  xxxxx old. (as it was from old computer)
So now i have 2 admin accounts, how do i know which is the most 'powerful', in terms of hierarchy, or are they the same, does it matter?
    Thanks

Admin accounts are all the same.
In general, on a new Mac you should use Setup Assistant to migrate from your old MacBook. It will pull across your User Accounts, settings, applications, etc.

  • Will apple store do the migration from an Macbook Pro to Macbook Air?

I just purchased today a refurbished Macbook Air from Apple. I need to have all of the software, program files, emails, and the ktichen migrated to it from my Macbook Pro. Will my local Apple Store do the migration for me if I take them the receipt for my Macbook Air?

I am certain they will, I am less certain they will do it for free.
I seem to recall their charge is $50 but this may have changed.

Connecting to a TV is no different than connecting to any other external display. It's possible that there's a problem with the mini dvi port on the macbook r that you have bad adapters. You might try resetting the SMC Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC) - Apple Support
Does the Macbook recognize that there's an external display connected when you look at the Display preference pane?

I was migrating from macbook to a new imac.
Nothing showed up until I turned off the imac.
When I restarted the imac everythign I'd previously done was gome and the migrated macbook desktop had taken over.
How do I bring back the original imac settings.
    Thanks

You can't. When you migrate user accounts, those settings will be used. That's the point of migrating, not to have to reset things Peruse Pondini's Setup New Mac guide for details.
If you want to revert to the original user settings, create an new admin user account. That'll use the default user setup.

  • Migration from old macbook air

I have just brought an iMac and wanted to move all the documents from my old macbook air onto the iMac to free some space from the air. I have used the migration assist to transfer the documents across however it has deleted all my new iMac settings. Will I have lost new software and apps etc that came with the new iMac? Is there a way I can just have the documents from the macbook air without all the settings and old things that were on the macbook air? I want to restore all the settings I had before the migration on the iMac but keep the documents - please help!!! Worried I have ruined my new iMac!
    Thanks

  • Tips for manual migration from iBook G4 to MacBook

I have tried to use the migration wizard 4 times and it always gets stuck from my iBook G4 to my new MacBook.. I have reformatted my MacBook and will do the migration via and external Hard Drive manually. The documents are easy. Photos and Itunes is easy. Now I need help with manually migrating the following...
    1. Safari and Firefox bookmarks, saved passwords, etc.
    2. Mail, folders, history and accounts.
    3. Other programs, i.e. Office, Photoshop, etc
Am I missing anything. I am sure I am overlooking some stuff that will make my move to the new computer much better. Can someone please post a "how to" bullet point list for the Mac challenged. Thanks!

  • Migrating from ibook (10.4.11) to new macbook with 10.6

I'm writing this to hopefully be informative for someone else with similar problems. Have had an ibook for many years. Lots of documents; mostly MS word. Bought new macbook (white) and started it up. It asked about migrating but I decided to use it for a couple simple things first and migrate the info from the old machine later. So later came and I networked the 2 machines together (the new book ain't got no firwire!) to transfer the stuffs over likety split. Once all the updates have been done I start migration assistant and find that I can only choose to move the user account from the ibook to the macbook; IE, I cannot replace the new user that I created on the macbook a couple days ago. So I figure I want a new account anyway so as to be free of various issues. I'll simply copy the files from the old account to the new one and move on. But, after this is done I find that the new user does not have permission to work with the old files. These files belong to the old user. So I do some searching and find a program called batchmod. I try to use it to change permissions on all files in the documents folder. No dice, it doesn't change all permissions. So do some more searching and end up calling apple. They answer my call pretty quickly. They suggest that I make the old moved account the master admin account and delete the new one. I figure I'll try this so I log into the old account but find that many things are acting buggy. I can't change the desktop image. If I change dock preferences they only change for that session. As soon as I log out and back in I'm back to default. Some programs moved over from the old machine don't load or work correctly (Brother printer software for one). So I decide to give batchmod another try after some more reading. What I ended up doing was making a new group and putting the old and new accounts in the group. Then I changed permissions on all the docs in all their folders to allow this new group to have read and write access to the files. The tricky part was figuring out that batchmod would only do it's stuff one time per launch. For every new folder or change that I wanted to try I had to quite batchmod and start it again. The secret seems to be whether or not it asks you for a password. So now I've got access to the files in the new account and it's running sweet. My next task is figuring out how to make MS Word 2008 submit. I mean, Pages is pretty nice. If only it was suited to interfacing with other Word users then we'd have something.
    Chmed

You would have saved yourself all of these issues if you would simply migrated everything on first boot. The key to moving stuff from one account to another is to follow these steps laid out by Király in
