Migrated Library still linked to files on old drive.

When I got my new Mac Pro in Feb, I pulled my old drive out of my G4 and installed it in the Mac Pro. I then used the Migration Assistant to copy my user files over. Everything was looking fine until I decided I didn't need the files on the old G4 drive anymore. I deleted my user data and now iTunes claims 95% of my music files are offline (exclamation point in front of the name). I guess it was still pointing most of the songs to the old files on the old drive. I do have and have always had the preferences set to copy files to the iTunes folder during import.
The files are on the new drive in the right place. If I try to play a song, it says the file can't be found and it lets me reconnect to it. And then all is well - for that one song. Reconnected about 20 so far and they all work so I'm pretty sure all the music is there.
OK, finally here's the question: Is there a faster way to reconnect all the remaining song files to the iTunes library without re-importing and losing all the play and ratings history. Doing it one at a time will take me until its time to upgrade to a new computer - which was about 5 years for the last upgrade. I think I still have around 1200 files to reconnect although the alert I get when connecting my iPod only shows 100 in the list of missing.
By the way, the whole library is/was synced to my iPod if that will help.

Well, I thought I had a solution. My iPod has all the music and playlists (but no movies) so I bought a license to Podworks. The first time I tried to import my music and playlists from the iPod, it errored out on each file with the same error described by some obscure error number I don't remember.
I then tried deleting all the bad files from iTunes (the ones with the exclamation points) and then iPodworks imported everything. The trouble is my library folder nearly doubled in size. Yes, even though I deleted the files in iTunes, since they didn't connect to the music files on the disk, they remained. Now I have a second copy of all those files imported from the iPod. A " 1" was added to the imported file names.
On to plan B, whatever that is.

  • After using Migration Assistant some apps need to mount old drive

I recently used Migration Assistant to move ONLY my account info & files from my old G4 (running 10.4.3) to my new G5. I did NOT have it migrate any of my installed apps - I did clean installs (and then upgrades) of all apps.
Unfortunately a few apps ask to mount the old G4 drive before they will finish launching. Am giving the option to Cancel or Continue - if the old G4 is not on (with file sharing enabled) the affected app will hang, if the old G4 is on then clicking Continue will automatically mount it and the app will then work without problem.
Obviously there is a preference that was migrated from my account on the G4 to the G5 that has the old hostname embedded in it that is causing this. I have deleted all preferences (and other associated files) that I can find for the affected apps and then re-installed but still cannot run these apps without first mounting the old G4's drive.
The affected apps are Firefox and Photoshop CS2. Other web browsers such as Safari & I.E. work without problem, likewise for other Adobe CS2 apps such as InDesign & Illustrator. All of these apps were previously installed on the G4 when I did the Migrate - all were re-installed on the G5 instead of being Migrated.
    Any ideas?
Best I can think is that some preference for these apps was moved from the G4 to the G5 when I migrated my account files/settings, but I've yet to be able to find it. (I even got so desperate as to try a recursive grep from / of * for the hostname of the old G4 and haven't found anything)
    Thanks in advance.

I was finally able to fix this by using a couple of preference management utilities. Either I missed a key preference file for each app, or there are some hidden preference files, but when I used the prefence management utitilities (such as Preferntial Treatment, PrefEdit, Defaulter, or PlistEdit Pro) I was able to look at the prefs for Firefox and Photoshop CS2 and see where the hostname for the my old G4 was listed. (in the case of Photoshop CS2 it was actually in the list of recently opened files!! I should have noticed that from within Photoshop)
Now that I've removed those entries from preferences both Photoshop and Firefox run without prompting that the old G4 had to mounted.
oh, also... I found that for both Photoshop & Firefox I could actually get them to work without mounting the old G4's root volume - it just took clicking past the pop-ups (about 10 of them for each app) and waiting a long time as it searched around for the next one (maybe about 10 minutes total ... normally I don't have time to waste like that, but I got curious and made the time).
Thank you for your suggestions. as I had suspected, Migration Assistant moved some preferences from the old G4 that had it's hostname embedded and for some reason the apps weren't clearing them out when they were launched on the new machine (again, odd since I didn't have Migration Assistant move the apps from the old G4 to the new G5 - I installed each app on the G5 as a new install (aka: a "clean install") to avoid just this type of problem).
My real thanks are to the authors of the above mentioned preference management utilities.

  • Link to file on Shared Drive

In one of my report output, I need to include a link(url) to file on Shared Drive. The path is stored in database and it will be retrieved in query. The file can be either PDF/WORD/Excel for now.
For ex. e:\\abc\share\test.xls should appear as url in report and when user clicks the url, it should open the test.xls file.
Could some body help me how to do this?
    Thank You.

    Hi..
    I have the same scenario..
One of the columns in the xml file has a path on the shared drive..
    like...
    S:\MANAGERS\xxxx.doc
when the user clicks on the hyperlink the documnet doesn't open and is giving an error as
cannot find file:///u01/oracle/product/10.1.3/dmidr3/j2ee/home/S:\MANAGERS\xxxx%20.doc make sure the path or internet address is correct.
As you can see the report is adding the path ///u01/oracle/product/10.1.3/dmidr3/j2ee/home/ before the actual path that appears in the report.
    Snippet of my xml file..

  • Using Reference Files - Aperture Library still larger than file storage

Still new to Aperture, and so far LOVE the metadata tagging functionality, but am troubled by the huge size of the Aperture library. Here's my stats so far, after a couple of days of importing, with no image management done so far other than assigning some metadata...
    # photos managed as reference files=1175
Size of folder where reference files are stored=883MB
    Size of Aperture library (.aplibrary)=1.44GB
My expectation would be that the ratio of Aperture library to reference file folder would be about 1/10. But 1.6/1 seems way out of whack. I selected all photos within Aperture and then selected "Manage Reference Files..." and all 1175 file references showed up. On that basis, I'm pretty confident that the jpegs aren't being copied into the Aperture library. But I cannot explain why the library continues to be 1.5+ times as large as the reference file folder.
This seems to defeat the purpose of keeping reference files external from Aperture.
Am I missing something, or is this to be expected? If these ratios hold, then it seems if I end up managing 10GB of photos I will incur another 15-16GB of storage requirement just for Aperture to do its thing.
What is Aperture doing with all that hard drive storage space?

By default, Aperture creates previews of all of your images. A preview is little more than a JPEG copy of the original. The size of these are determined by the settings in Aperture's preferences. When you're dealing with RAW images, the size of the previews are significantly smaller than the master image, but if you're working with JPEGs, then the previews can balloon the library to as large (large when you add up the thumbnails and duplicates) as the referenced files.
You can reduce the size of the previews, or delete them and turn them off all together if you're not sharing your photos with other iLife & iWork apps from Aperture. There are some other reasons you may find them beneficial, and this article will help you determine if they are right for you:

  • Iphoto Library re-linking source files.

I downloaded some photos from a friend, and imported them directly into iphoto.
iphoto Library created a new temporary folder for each photo. I created a new roll in iphoto Library, and put each photo from that event into one Roll.
Now the photo thumbnails are appearing in iphoto, but when I click to expand a photo,it comes up as an exclamation point and missing photo.
How do I re-link the photo from the new roll in iphoto Library?

    Your post is confusing
You posted in the iPhoto '09 forum and discuss rolls which have not existed since iPhoto 6 and earlier - what version do you have?
iphoto Library created a new temporary folder for each photo
What do you mean by this? folders in iPhoto can only be created by users and they do not hold photos, they hold albums and/or other folders. Please explain what you are talking about.
I created a new roll in iphoto Library, and put each photo from that event into one Roll.
Again please explain. There is no version of iPhoto that has both rolls and events. And are you moving photos using only iPhoto (or are you using the finder to move things around inside the iPhoto library -- this is a big no no for all versions of iPhoto)
Now the photo thumbnails are appearing in iphoto, but when I click to expand a photo,it comes up as an exclamation point and missing photo.
This can be caused by user activity within the iPhoto library - see my question above.
How do I re-link the photo from the new roll in iphoto Library?
This depends on the details of your answers - and it may not be possible

  • Library lost link to files

Hi, I've experienced a very annoying bug.
I've opened iTunes and every single song that I choose to play ask me to find the file. Is there a way to indicate to the application the correct path for everysong instead of deleting and reimport all again?
    Thanks

Right click on one of the files and do "Get Info" and look at the first tab and look to see where iTunes is looking for the files.
If you're keeping your iTunes Library on an External HD, it's possible that the drive letter isn't the same as it usually is, so you'll need to change the drive letter back to where it usually is. With both Windows and MAC, this is fairly easily done, but a bit complicated to find.

  • Can I recover lost library from Windows backup file after hard drive crash?

I'm sure this has been visited before, so I'm sorry if this is redundent.
My daughters Windows notebook had to be reformatted because of a severe virus. I had all important files including iTunes songs backed up onto portable Hard Drive. Got her notebook up and running and then restored her songs back to her computer (but not into the original location). Plugged in her iPod Mini and now it shows no files at all on the Mini and iTunes will not access or recognize the songs that I restored
Prior to the restoring she was able to listen to her complete music collection on the iPod Mini.
I still have access to the backup files either on the Hard Drive or in a separate folder from which I restored the first time. Should I completely erase the songs from the notebook now and then access the backup file?
And how do I get the Mini and iTunes to recognize the music once and for all?
Thanks for any advice, help, and suggestions.
    Tony
HP Pavilian Notebook   Windows XP   iPod Mini.

What you will do depends on if you have the "iTUnes Music Library.xml" file on backup. By default this file is stored on
    C (Or the drive windows is on)/documents and settings/............/My Documents/My Music/iTunes
If you DO have this file on backup, then you will have to set all the music to its EXACT location it was before reformatting

  • How to configure/send http links to files on a drive?

We recently switched over to a Mac-based file server for our small business from a Windows server after a hardware failure. Previously we were able to send HTTP links (I believe using FTP?) to clients that linked directly to video files on one of the drives within the server, which would play back in a browser window or could be downloaded by saving the link. I'm now trying to figure out how to add this functionality to the new server. I'm not an IT guy so this is all kind of Italian to me. All I'm looking for is someone to point me in the right direction.
What I do know is that the old links were formatted as such:
    zcg911.us/_clients/cintas/example.mov
There was a drive attached to the server we labeled "htdocs" which contained the "_clients" folder, and was being linked to. Basically I just want to replicate this functionality so we can resume sending out links to our clients in this way.
Is this something I can do with the OS X Server app? Or do I need third-party software to accomplish this? Any help would be hugely appreciated.

For http links to work in this case you need a web server which can access those files and then 'serve' them via http. Such a URL would look something like
    http://mywebsever.domain.com/_clients/cintas/example.mov
The web server could be the file server and this would make things easier but it could be logged in to the file server as a client itself.
If you simply add a folder or folders to the web server so it can share these to clients, you need to make sure no other files are in the same folders that you do not want to make available to other people. Either this means ensuring only the files you want are in those folders, or instead of sharing the folders themselves, you could make aliases, aka. 'shortcuts', aka. 'links' to the individual files and putting those aliases in the website folder.

  • Is there no way to re-link all files on a drive at once? Lightroom ask to "combine folders" instead?

    Hi,
I would like to relink all the photos in my LR5 catalogue to a new drive to which I have copied all the items using Finder (and not from within LR unfortunately).
When clicking on the exclamation mark next to the "missing" photo with "Find Nearby Missing Photos" checked, I can relink all photos in that folder. The same is true if done through the folder pane to the left. But when trying to relink several folders at once, like e.g. when selecting the main 2014 folder, it only says that the folders are already recognized and offers to "combine" them and offers no other re-link alternative. Relinking each folder manually would be too time consuming and I am sure there has to be a way to do this since it was possible already in LR3 (and probably before that).
What does "combine folders" mean in this context and how would I go about to solve this? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

    Hi Peter,
Yes, I am calling RFC function module from XI.
After I changed the interface of RFC in SAP, I have imported this RFC once more to XI in Integration Builder and new structures appeared.
And exception returned is that first new field added to the RFC and Data Type and so on, returns an exception.
And returned XML structures (in message monitoring) appears to be still old structures.

i see that i have a problem after installing my new hard drive on my macbook pro mid 2009 version. I put a new hard drive, with all of my information from my old drive installed on it, into the computer. but now have the blinking question mark folder. I see that it means that it isn't reading the new hard drive.
did i miss a step between transferring all of my information from my old hard drive to the new hard drive and installing the new hard drive into the computer. I believe that i installed properly. it was quite easy.
    thanks for your help

It means there is no bootable system on the drive. If you still have access to the old drive, then I suggest you boot from it then clone it to the new internal drive. Use OPTION boot to boot from the Recovery HD on the old drive:
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
         1. Select Disk Utility from the main menu then press the Continue
             button.
         2. Select the destination volume from the left side list.
         3. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
         4. Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag it
             to the Destination entry field.
         5. Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to
             the Source entry field.
         6. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Source means the external old drive. Destination means the new internal drive.

  • Move SAPDATA files from one drive to another

    Hi,
I have a DR server running on Windows 2003 and Oracle 10.2.
The SAPDATA drive Z is running out of space and I need to move it to a bigger drive.
The server has two RAID 5 interfaces where all the disks are located i.e Disk 0 and Disk 1.
    Below is the plan:
    1)     create a new drive K in Disk 1
    2)     manually copy all SAPDATA files from old drive Z (located in Disk 0) to drive K
    3)     rename the old drive Z in Disk 0 to another alphabet
    4)     rename the new drive K to Z
Start the server and SAP services and there should not be any issues for SAP in recognizing the "new" enlarged drive Z,
    do you agree?
    Thank you.

    Hi,
Yes this will work. You can proceed.
But make sure that you take a backup before proceeding further.

  • The FlashPlayer distribution download page still links to old version 14.0.0.176 MSI files

  • I recently purchased a MacBook Pro, I did not transfer files from my old pc with migration assistant when I set up the MacBook. A few days later I did the transfer, now my Itunes library and everything else from my old pc is under a different user account

I've already setup the original user account and do not want to do it again, how do I merge the two user accounts into one so all of my stuff is under one user account?

They are the same Itunes account (mine), but since I transferred the 'user account' with my Itunes library and other files from old pc to my new MacBook, I now have two 'user accounts' on my MacBook. The original I setup when I got the MacBook and the one I transferred from my pc. I've already went thru most of my photos in Iphoto and named all the faces along with general setup of how I want all my settings on my MacBook under the first user account, I don't want to start over and do it all again with the transferred user account, I just want to move my Itunes library I transferred over to my original user account on my MacBook. Does this make any sense? lol

  • Moved iTunes "library", but the files are still on the old drive

I have a 4 year old Windows Home Server that housed my actual media files/albums etc.  Need to move THOSE files from that hard drive to a new NAS drive (synology).   I google search an alway get the same instructions which show me how to move the iTunes Library and use that library (Shift/iTunes/choose).  But that isn't coping the actual albums from the WHS to the Synology NAS drive.  Got a folder Music, itunes has created a sub folder called iTunes, the .itl folder is in there etc.  BUT I'm going to bring this old drive down.  I could drag drop, but that isn't going to pick up any DRMs, nor is it going to get iTunes to point to it.  What am I missing??
HELP - I have the NEWEST release of iTunes.  which doesn't seem to have a move function or a consolidate function if thats the ticket.

See make a split library portable for some general background.
Press ALT or CTRL+B to reveal the hidden menu bar. The consolidate function is where it always was.
With a NAS drive you'll get a performance hit by having the library files on the NAS, but you may want your library in portable shape to move easily from one system or drive to another. Having moved it you can then copy the library files to local storage for performance. Copy back to the NAS and access there once before attempting another move.
