Migrated Users can't log in new ones can?

I hope someone can help me out here. I'm not a full time server admin and must be missing something...
I'm migrating an old G4 Xserve (10.4.11) to a newer Intel Xserve (10.6.6).
I got though the migration assistant successfully and the server boots and looks just like the old G4.
I did note a few glitches like a missing "com.apple.Boot.plist" file and none of the DHCP Static Maps migrated. All other settings, users, groups etc. look like they moved just fine. My data is all there and the folder structure is correct. DNS forward and reverse is working as it should.
Everything seams like it should be working fine, but not one of my migrated users can login to the server. All of them get the Message, "You are unable to log in to the user account "namehere" at this time. Logging in to the account failed because an error occurred.
When I created a new "testuser" account with all the same settings, privileges, home folder location, etc and it can login just fine...
What am I missing here?

  • How do I make my old user account perform like the new one?

I have a macbook pro 13" 2008 with 8 gb of ram that has been showing stuttering in hd video lately (or maybe when i upgraded to lion). I created another user and it doesn't seem to suffer any stuttering. Perhaps it doesn't have weird things running the background like the 655mb kernal task I see in activity monitor. My question is, how do I make my old user account perform like the new one? I've tried to turn off things running the background, but it doesn't seem to do anything. Thanks!

  • Migrated Users Can't Sign In

    Hello all,
I am migrating my company's Lync 2010 deployment to Lync 2013.  All servers are internal to the company, we are not using Lync Online services in any way.  We are also an IM/Presence-only deployment.  We are not using any voice/UM features.
I have the 2013 Front End server up and running, and I have replaced the 2010 Edge server with the 2013 Edge server.  IM, presence, federation, and external access are all working
When migrating users into the pilot pool on the 2013 server, I have noticed a significant delay before users are able to sign into Lync.  Even when associated with the 2013 pool, they are still able to sign in using the 2010 client, but the 2013 client
gives them the message "The username, password or domain appears to be incorrect. Ensure that you entered them correctly. If the problem continues, please contact your support team."  After a random amount of time (usually about an hour, but
sometimes much longer), they are suddenly able to sign in and everything is fine.
I have run a packet capture on both client and server, and I can confirm that while the users are attempting to sign in, there is absolutely no attempt made to contact the server, even if the servers are manually specified.
I am stumped here, and I am unable to continue with the migration on a wide scale until I have this issue figured out.  I have tried searching both here and other places online, but all the discussion centers around Lync Online, which we are not using
    at all.
Can anyone help me shed some light on this? Your time and effort are greatly appreciated.

    Hi there,
Here is the trace log from a new user I created within the same AD site as the Lync front end server.  Upates have been applied, with no change.

  • Migrating MacBook data and settings to new one: can I use Time Capsule?

I gave away my old MacBook and bought a faster and bigger one (GHz, Ram, HD). Before that I backed it up to an external drive via TimeCapsule, but also separately backed up the Documents files.
Can I migrate all my programs/settings/data to the new laptop by simply using TimeCapsule with the timeCapsule data of the "old" laptop? What issues to consider? How to do it? Other/better options?
Any advice/pointer will be highly appreciated.
    Cheers,
    Veit

I think this would work, but it would be much better (i.e. faster) to use SuperDuper or CarbonCopyCloner to make an exact copy of the contents of your internal hard disk onto an external hard drive. Then use Migration Assistant (it should launch automatically when you boot your new computer for the first time, or else run it manually) to migrate the settings.

  • Can I use TM to transfer data from my current iMac to a new one?

I have a new iMac and I would like to migrate my old iMac into the new one. I have thought of connecting the old to the new one and using Migration Assistant, but I am wondering if it would make more sense (if possible) to do this through the old Imac's Time Machine backup.
I was wondering if anyone knew how to help me with this. I am looking at migrating everything.
    Thank you!

Sure, you can use the TM backup via Migration Assistant. When you run Migration Assistant you will have an option to restore from a TM backup instead of another Mac. Just connect your TM backup drive to the new computer but don't turn on TM until you've finished your migration.
Do not migrate "everything." Your old machine may have a different version or build of OS X than the new one. If the old machine is a PPC machine then you may have components that are incompatible with the new machine. See the following:
A Basic Guide for Migrating to Intel-Macs
If you are migrating a PowerPC system (G3, G4, or G5) to an Intel-Mac be careful what you migrate. Keep in mind that some items that may get transferred will not work on Intel machines and may end up causing your computer's operating system to malfunction.
Rosetta supports "software that runs on the PowerPC G3, G4, or G5 processor that are built for Mac OS X". This excludes the items that are not universal binaries or simply will not work in Rosetta:
Classic Environment, and subsequently any Mac OS 9 or earlier applications
    Screensavers written for the PowerPC
    System Preference add-ons
    All Unsanity Haxies
    Browser and other plug-ins
    Contextual Menu Items
Applications which specifically require the PowerPC G5
    Kernel extensions
Java applications with JNI (PowerPC) libraries
See also What Can Be Translated by Rosetta.
In addition to the above you could also have problems with migrated cache files and/or cache files containing code that is incompatible.
If you migrate a user folder that contains any of these items, you may find that your Intel-Mac is malfunctioning. It would be wise to take care when migrating your systems from a PowerPC platform to an Intel-Mac platform to assure that you do not migrate these incompatible items.
If you have problems with applications not working, then completely uninstall said application and reinstall it from scratch. Take great care with Java applications and Java-based Peer-to-Peer applications. Many Java apps will not work on Intel-Macs as they are currently compiled. As of this time Limewire, Cabos, and Acquisition are available as universal binaries. Do not install browser plug-ins such as Flash or Shockwave from downloaded installers unless they are universal binaries. The version of OS X installed on your Intel-Mac comes with special compatible versions of Flash and Shockwave plug-ins for use with your browser.
The same problem will exist for any hardware drivers such as mouse software unless the drivers have been compiled as universal binaries. For third-party mice the current choices are USB Overdrive or SteerMouse. Contact the developer or manufacturer of your third-party mouse software to find out when a universal binary version will be available.
Also be careful with some backup utilities and third-party disk repair utilities. Disk Warrior 4.1, TechTool Pro 4.6.1, SuperDuper 2.5, and Drive Genius 2.0.2 work properly on Intel-Macs with Leopard. The same caution may apply to the many "maintenance" utilities that have not yet been converted to universal binaries. Leopard Cache Cleaner, Onyx, TinkerTool System, and Cocktail are now compatible with Leopard.
Before migrating or installing software on your Intel-Mac check MacFixit's Rosetta Compatibility Index.

Transferring data with Setup Assistant - Migration Assistant FAQ
Because Migration Assistant isn't the ideal way to migrate from PowerPC to Intel Macs, using Target Disk Mode, copying the critical contents to CD and DVD, an external hard drive, or networking
will work better when moving from PowerPC to Intel Macs. The initial section below discusses Target Disk Mode. It is then followed by a section which discusses networking with Macs that lack Firewire.
If both computers support the use of Firewire then you can use the following instructions:
    1. Repair the hard drive and permissions using Disk Utility.
    2. Backup your data. This is vitally important in case you make a mistake or there's some other problem.
    3. Connect a Firewire cable between your old Mac and your new Intel Mac.
    4. Startup your old Mac in Target Disk Mode.
    5. Startup your new Mac for the first time, go through the setup and registration screens, but do NOT migrate data over. Get to your desktop on the new Mac without migrating any new data over.
If you are not able to use a Firewire connection (for example you have a Late 2008 MacBook that only supports USB:)
    1. Set up a local home network: Creating a small Ethernet Network.
    2. If you have a MacBook Air or Late 2008 MacBook see the following:

Copy the following items from your old Mac to the new Mac:
In your /Home/ folder: Documents, Movies, Music, Pictures, and Sites folders.
    In your /Home/Library/ folder:
/Home/Library/Application Support/AddressBook (copy the whole folder)
/Home/Library/Application Support/iCal (copy the whole folder)
Also in /Home/Library/Application Support (copy whatever else you need including folders for any third-party applications)
    /Home/Library/Keychains (copy the whole folder)
    /Home/Library/Mail (copy the whole folder)
    /Home/Library/Preferences/ (copy the whole folder)
/Home /Library/Calendars (copy the whole folder)
/Home /Library/iTunes (copy the whole folder)
/Home /Library/Safari (copy the whole folder)
    If you want cookies:
    /Home/Library/Cookies/Cookies.plist
    /Home/Library/Application Support/WebFoundation/HTTPCookies.plist
    For Entourage users:
Entourage is in /Home/Documents/Microsoft User Data
    Also in /Home/Library/Preferences/Microsoft
Credit goes to Macjack for this information.
If you need to transfer data for other applications please ask the vendor or ask in the Discussions where specific applications store their data.
    5. Once you have transferred what you need restart the new Mac and test to make sure the contents are there for each of the applications.

  • How can I transfer my old iTunes (playlists and all) from the hard drive of my old dead computer to the iTunes of my new one?

So my old PC died before I managed to back up my iTunes library onto DVDs. I do however have the hard drive from the old PC with all the program files, files and folders on. I also have the iPhone 4, which has my top rated playlist on but that only holds about 20% of my entire music collection on.
Is it possible to somehow find all my old iTunes music, videos, playlists, podcasts etc and transfer it into the iTunes on the new PC without losing anything?

  • I Photo will not update after migrating from old I-Mac to new I-Mac with fusion drive

I just migrated from 2009 I-Mac with Mountain Lion to New I-Mac with Mountain Lion with migration Assistant. Now... I tunes will not update although Apple says one is available

a couple of things - you should not "migrate" applications - you should use the new ones that come preinstalled - what version of of iPhoto do you have on your new mac?
Migration assistance does not handle the iPhoto library well sometimes - the best way is to drag the bad iphoto library from the pictures folder on the new system to the desktop, connect the two systems together (network, firewire target mode, etc) and drag the iPhoto library intact as a single entity from the old system to the pictures folder of the new system and launch iPhoto on the new system - it will open and convert the iPhoto library as necessary and you will be fine - once you test the iPhoto library you can delete the one on the desktop

  • I set up my new computer using the apple ID i always use, and then later migrated all my files from my old mac book to the same new one, but under a different user (same ID). how do i consolidate the two users on my new mac book?

i set up my new computer using the apple ID i always use, and then later migrated all my files from my old mac book to the same new one, but under a different user (same apple ID). how do i consolidate the two users on my new mac book?

Well if you use the Finder Go menu to Computer, a window opens up double click on your boot drive and then on Users folder, open the other user folder and open Public and drop your files into DropBox
When you do this it will copy them and change the permissions and user assigned to it, so log into the other user and place them into your respective normal folders.
Once you have all your files over and don't need the old user, use System Preferences > Accounts to delete it if you wish, however it's good two Admin accounts on the machine in case something bad happens in the other. Some people for security reasons on use a Standard account for most uses and a emergency Admin account.
One can still do most Admin things in Standard user.

  • Migration created new User, can I do without?

Got a new iMac and I'm migrating from an iBook G4. Set up users on the iMac and then went back to migrate info. While going through all this, Migration Asst. mentions to me that there is already a user with that name on the new computer (duh, I am setting things up the same way as I had them on my G4) and I was asked to rename the user on the OLD COMPUTER. I did so, but when I finished, I couldn't find anything on the iMac. Logged out and found a new user acct with the revised name. Everything was transferred to that user.
So, I want to use the old info that was transferred with the original user and delete the revised-name user. Not sure how to set up access to all of that. Do I need to redo things? The user I want to stick with is the main one, the admin.
This is probably basic, but I found it annoying. I just wanted to migrate my stuff to the new machine, to the user I was logged in as.
Any suggestions or pointing in the right direction would be appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Bryan

you can not do that. there is no way to merge two users. certainly, no automatic way to do it. you should decide which user you want to use and stick with that. the best and the easiest is to use the migrated user. if you do it right after you set up the computer there are no issues with that as the originally created admin user account is empty. also, if you use setup assistant during the original computer setup to migrate from the old account it won't even create any other users beside the migrated one.
Any suggestions or pointing in the right direction would be appreciated.

  • How can I access files that I moved from an older MacBook Pro to a newer one via Firewire and Migration assistant.  The files show up on the new MacBook but cannot be opened.  Thanks!

Get info then check permissions then add your curent user name (it was probably different on old Mac) and give your username full read/write permissions.

  • User can't log in / Server can't create new users

I recently updated to OS X Server 10.5.5. Now one of my users can't log in. Wrong username or password the system says. I've reset the password but it doesn't help.
When creating a new user I get this error:
"The server reported the error '-14120' while trying to create the user."
    How can I fix this?

Well, to move the stuff, make a New Account, log into a different admin account & get BatchMod, it's much better/easier than the Finder for recursive Permission changes...
    http://www.lagentesoft.com/batchmod/index.html
Now careful with BatchMod, it's crazy powerful, but easier than Command Line.
Oh, this bad user isn't using FileVault I hope???
OK, once BatchMod is loaded, you can drag the whole bad user's folder to it's icon and set the Ownership/permissions to the new replacement user, check Apply to Enclosed items, go.
Oh, if you have room you might make a copy of that User's folder first & use the copy.
Then open the bad User's folder, Select All, drag to new replacement User's folder.

  • Since upgrading to 10.8 I've had alot of issues burning DVD's. I've had the drive replaced and now I can burn from a new user account but not the old one. Is there any way of making the old one work?

Just want to avoild spending hours migrating everything across....

Yes, I can read but just can't write DVD's. I get:
This disc can’t be verified and might be unreliable. Try again using a new blank disc (error code 0x80020063).
Originally I thought it was the old Moutain Lion DVD drive issue (but have had the drive recently replaced by Apple), so I tried creating a new account, which worked.
In the old account I have reset SMU, Pram... but no change.

To change the iCloud ID you have to go to Settings>iCloud, tap Delete Account, provide the password for the old ID when prompted to turn off Find My iPhone (if you're using iOS 7), then sign back in with the ID you wish to use.  If you don't know the password for your old ID, or if it isn't accepted, go to https//appleid.apple.com, click Manage my Apple ID and sign in with your current iCloud ID.  Tap edit next to the primary email account, tap Edit, change it back to your old email address and save the change.  Then edit the name of the account to change it back to your old email address.  You can now use your current password to turn off Find My iPhone on your device, even though it prompts you for the password for your old account ID. Then go to Settings>iCloud, tap Delete Account and choose Delete from My iDevice when prompted (your iCloud data will still be in iCloud).  Next, go back to https//appleid.apple.com and change your primary email address and iCloud ID name back to the way it was.  Now you can go to Settings>iCloud and sign in with your current iCloud ID and password.
