Migrating Address Book dilemma with iCloud

My Address Book hasn't been syncing on MobileMe for almost two years. MobileMe tech support and even the engineers have tried and failed. Needless to say, it's a bit out of date on my iPhone. Whenever I notice that there's old contact info on my phone, I change it. But it's by no means as current as the Address Book on my MacBook Pro. What is going to happen on iCloud if gets two versions of my Address Book? Will it know which contacts are more current and update or will I have a giant mess on my hands? Is there anyway to have iCloud access only my laptop Address Book? I was hoping to migrate today or tomorrow.
I'd appreciate any advice on avoiding a headon Address Book collision.

If you have a Time Machine backup, you already have a backup of your mail. However if you wish to create just a backup of your mail (on your desktop say), you can do so by clicking on your desktop and then going to the Go menu in the Finder and while the Go menu is displayed, hold down the Alt key on your keyboard. This will reveal your library in the menu, which you can then click to open. Control click on the mail folder that you see within the library, and choose copy Mail from the contextual menu that appears.You can then control click on your desktop and choose paste item from the contextual menu that appears to have picked your mail folder to your desktop.
As iCloud, (if you wil) is the master copy of everything and is held in the cloud, by initiating iCloud on your MacBook you have already sent the data to the cloud from the MacBook by choosing the options you wish to use in system preferences > iCloud. The data in the cloud will then be written to your phone based on the services you choose from settings > iCloud  on your phone.

  • How can i migrate address book server to iCloud?

    I was hoping to export an archive of Address Book which is running on my 10.6 server so that I could import it to iCloud's address book.
    How can I do this?  I can't see any functionality to import in iClouds's Address Book.
    Do I have to have all of these server contacts "On My Mac" before iCloud will play ball?
    thanks!

    I don't see a way to import specifically to iCloud.  I tried this but when I select import, it jsut imports it back to the server AB.  I can't select for it to overwrite iCloud.
    As for the vCard option, thats for individual contacts no?  I have thousands of contacts... that would take forever!
    Thanks for your help, bu what am I missing here?
    I suggested exporting to an Address Book Archive, did you do that or did you choose vcard?

  • How can I organize groups in Address Book while running iCloud under Lion?

    I am frustrated with the new Address Book for many reasons:
    It is no longer possible to view groups, list, and cards at the same time, just groups and list or list and cards.  This means it is very cumbersome to organize cards to multiple groups, something that wa relatively easy before.  Why not allow us to see all three at once and conveniently drag and delete?
    The individual cards do not list what groups each card belongs to.  Why didn't Apple include a list and a way to change the group when editing cards?  Do any of the Apple programmers actually use their own programs to make them useful and convenient?
    While running iCloud addresses are duplicated (one set "On My Mac" and another "iCloud").  While it is possible to view only one set or the other, I found that it is best to backup and then delete the "On My Mac" cards and groups.  Even then it is confusing to navigate and move cards around.
    The iCloud synch with my iPod is working well, but I have to synch my older iPhone 3G with a cable. (will not run OS X v 10.7 Lion).
    The iCloud address book is not synching properly with Yahoo, but rather the Yahoo address are being pulled over to the "On My Mac" set that had been removed.  Why can't we set controls of pushing or pulling data vs synching, as well as whether whether this is with the iCloud or "On My Mac" addresses?
    The new address book format, while cute is too bright, hard to read and wastes a lot of space with white nothingness.  Why can't we have a more attractive, easier to read, and functional address book format, with more ability to customize format for advanced users?
    I suppose I may have answered my own question: basically it is possible to manage the groups as long is willing to put up with inefficiency and backs up manually by exporting the address book regularly as a backup (because so much can and does go wrong).  Does anybody have more insight?

  • Is Address book compatible with Outlook

    Hi,
    I'm usine Msft Outlook at my office to handle emails. Is the Mac Address Book compatible with Outlook as for imports/exports so that I can update my contacts from office and vice versa?
    Thx

    Hi,
    Address Book "should" sync with an OWA server... I never got it to work, but some colleagues of mine do...
    I (mis)use Entourage to do the syncing from time to time (hate the app though), and I also use AddressX from Snerdware to sync Exchange's GAL...
    Regards,

  • "...cannot use the application "Address Book.app" with  'leopard.'...????

    I get the message: "You cannot use the application “Address Book.app” with this version of Mac OS X. "What does this mean, wat do I do? Do I lose my address book.?

    you can do the following to transfer your Tiger addressbookdata file to Leopard if none of your other countermeasures are working.
    Create a new folder and give it a name such as TigertoLeopard data or whatever;
    then drag your Tiger addressbook data file into that folder;
    add .abbu to the end of the name you gave that new folder;
    remember where you placed the folder and use Leopard Mail import command.

  • My MacBook Pro will not sync address book changes with my IPhone.  Why?  It used to.

    My MacBook Pro will not sync address book changes with my IPhone.  Why?  It used to.

    Then you may have to try manually resetting the syncservices folder by following Julian Write's post (from https://discussions.apple.com/message/9274781#9274781):
    Ok, as you can't reset SyncServices in the "normal" way, you'll have to resort to the "other" way:
    Although it's not advised to do so in normal circumstances, you'll need to manually delete the SyncServices folder.
    Before doing so, you MUST make a backup of both your Contacts and Calendars:
    In Address Book, choose *Export > Address Book Archive...* from the File menu.
    In iCal, choose *Back up iCal...* from the File menu.
    Then, make a backup of the SyncServices folder located at:
    ~/Library/Application Support/SyncServices
    By backing everything up first, you don't risk losing anything.
    Finally delete the aforementioned SyncServices folder and restart the Mac. This will force Mac OS X to recreate the SyncServices folder, and hopefully fix your problem.
    I believe in Snow Leopard you can back up your calendar in File>Export>iCal Archive rather than File>Back up iCal as posted above.

  • Deleting Address Book Notes with Automator

    I imported all my contacts from Yahoo and now there's a bunch of jibberish under all my contacts notes...well most of them. Is there anything I can run from automator to delete all notes from all contacts? I don't need any notes. Thanks!

    paste the following into AppleScript Editor (it's in /Applications/Utilities) and press "run".
    <pre style="
    font-family: Monaco, 'Courier New', Courier, monospace;
    font-size: 10px;
    margin: 0px;
    padding: 5px;
    border: 1px solid #000000;
    width: 720px;
    color: #000000;
    background-color: #ADD8E6;
    overflow: auto;"
    title="this text can be pasted into the Script Editor">
    tell application "Address Book"
    repeat with per in people
    set note of per to ""
    save
    end repeat
    end tell</pre>
    Note: it might take a while for it to finish working if you have a lot of contacts.

  • My address book contacts in icloud

    Hi All,
    I cannot seem to sync my address book contacts in icloud. I have search for some info online which suggested that I go into my address book preferences and set it up to icloud but this option does not show in the preferences.
    Any advice?
    thanks.

    You need Mac OS X 10.7.4 or later to use iCloud and have the iCloud system preferences pane.

  • Syncing Address Book contacts with iPod

    I know some people will think this post should be in the iPod forum but I have realised that it is not my iPod beccasue I tried using a different iPod and the same problem happened. Anyway...the problem is that when I choose to sync Address Book contacts with iPod it comes up with this message:
    No contacts available
    Contact syncinig cannot be enabled because there are no contacts available. Do you want to open Address Book and create contacts now?
    And gives me the options: Cancel and Open Address Book
    I have tried deleting several different preferences for iTunes, Address Book and iSync (just incase).
    I don't know what else to do, I know I can manually add my contacts by exporting them all as a vCard but it would be so much easier if iTunes could do it. Please help if you know anything!

    I've got Calenders syncing again, not sure how I did it. I deleted the one of the folders in /Users/Alex/Library/Application Support/SyncServices/Local/clientdata/
    I found that in each folder there is a clientname.txt file with the name of what data is in the folder e.g. iCal, Safari, Keychain, Mail.
    I deleted the iCal one and iTunes seems to be syncing it now. So I looked for a folder with Address Book in the clientname.txt file but there wasn't one. I am wondering whether that's the reason!

  • Address Book Sync with Google Contacts across computers (instead of iCloud with Lion)?

    I am trying to get ready for the port to iCloud and i am going to do this while still on Snow Leopard per Roger Wilmut's fantastic documentation. It appear to me I will simply lose Bookmark Sync (until I move to Mountail Lion) which is a small(ish) price to pay to not have to deal with an upgrade at the moment.
    The question I am hoping to answer is if it will be possible to SYNC MY CONTACTS across my devices (MacBookPro, MacPro and iPhone) using the Sync with Google Contacts Option in Address Book Preferences.
    Does anyone know if checking this option will put these contacts on both of my Machines and on my iPhone?
    ALSO, does anyone know if it is possible to put the ADDRESS BOOK CONTACTS in one folder and the GOOGLE CONTACTS in another folder so they don't all get mixed up together?
    TIA

    I can't even get manual Google syncing to work with iCloud enabled. Without iCloud, everything works fine.

  • How to synchronize address book (empty) with contacts in icloud (ok)?

    All my contacts appear in iCloud. None of them show in the Dock's address book. How do I synchronze one with the other?

    I think some third party solutions can solve your problem, here is one, just found it on VersionTracker : http://www.slamslash.com/address-o-sync
