Migrating applications to new mac - some questions

Hi
I have just bought a new iMac to replace my 2009 iMac Both iMacs running Mavericks. I understand that when I first switch on the new iMac I will have the chance to allow SETUP to transfer all my data, applications and settings over from the old iMac. My questions are about this process.
On my old iMac I use: iLife (iphoto, imovie 9.0.9 - NOT the new iMovie, iDVD, iWeb), plus the usual standard Mac programs of Mail, Address Book, Calendar and iTunes. I also use Skype, Handbrake, Sonos 3rd party applications and have Parallels Desktop 9 installed running an XP virtual machine with Microsoft Money, Quickbooks and Microsoft Access Database installed in that Windows environment.
1) One of the reasons I am upgrading is that the speed performance of my 2009 mac has severely suffered since I upgraded from the original Snow Leopard. I am worried that if I migrate everything across from my old iMac, then I will also bring across whatever things have been slowing it down and damage the potential performance of my new imac. Is it therefore better to start afresh and install all my 3rd party software again from new? (Time consuming and complicated, so I would prefer not to, but I will do it if it is advisable)
2) I understand that I can only choose to bring all Applications across or no applications. If I choose none, will I be able to get iMovie 9.0.9, iDVD and iWeb over somehow, as I know these are no longer available from Apple to install from new.
3) I have all my imovie files stored on an external firewire drive. How do I restore the links to that drive from within iMovie 9.0.9 on my new iMac to support my event library and projects within iMovie 9.0.9
4) Will my iPhoto library and iTunes data (I have two iTunes libraries, one lossless for my Sonos and one MP3 for my ipods) all be transferred as part of the data migration, if I do not do Application migration?
5) will all the settings and drivers for my connected peripherals be migrated (laser printer, scanner/copier printer, apple TV, iphone and ipad connection settings, household sharing with other macs in my house, Western Digital smartware and dashboard form my other external WD NAS drive)
As you can see, I am slightly worried that setting up my new iMac may be such a hassle it will detract from the the enjoyment of getting it :-)
Any thoughts and advice from other forum users' experience would be greatly appreciated.

Setup Assistant is the best method for migrating. What normally slows down a computer is not enough RAM, a setting that has gone amiss possibly installing antivirus or other performance enhancing (actually performance robbing) applications. You can break down the migration to be apps, settings, data files etc. IMHO the VERY best thing you can do is to ensure your old machine is up-to-date in all the applications it has, ensure not antivirus or performance robbing apps are uninstalled per the developers instructions and that it's running well. The back the old machine to a Time Machine external HD> DO NOT USE a NAS to backup!
If you are worried about apps then don't migrate them, do a manual re-install on all your legacy apps. However remember mavericks will not run PPC based apps so if you have any legacy apps that are PPC based then upgrade or replace them because they will NOT work in Mavericks.
To be honest you are probably worrying about this too much, doing a migration is extremely simple and efficient assuming you follow some basic rules:
1. Restore from Time Machine or a bootable clone external HD, NOT A NAS
2. DO NOT attempt a wireless migration unless you don't mind it to take weeks, no I am not kidding!
To get your libraries on the external HD recognized simply connect the external HD to the new machine and double click the libraries and the app will launch and link to the EHD.
AGAIN DO NOT USE A NAS for backing up or restoring. At best they are unreliable and worst they fail to connect at all.

    i recently migrated to a new mac. in iphoto, some photos have a small flag on the upper left of the photo. any idea what that is?

    That's called Flagging. It's a way to make a quick selection of photos. For instance if you're looking for the best shot to print you might go through the photos and flag candidates for further inspection. Then clicking on the Flagged Section on the left, you can see these selected photos together. You can remove flags by clicking on them, if you mouse over a shot you'll see the option to add a flag by clicking. This can also be done in the Photos menu.

    Yes.
    You can authorize up to 5 computers to play itunes music ( pre-itunes plus).  There is no limit on itunes plus ( all itunes music for the past several years) and imported music.
    You can sync as many ipods/ipads/iphones as you like to each of your computers.

    Have a student / teacher subscription. Trying to download and install applications on new mac pro with yosemite. Old applications still work on older Mac Pro. Can't download any applications. Creative Cloud website and desktop app both fail. Very frustrating. Anyone having this problem?

    Chas50 I would recommend removing the currently installed Adobe Creative software.  You can then install the new versions of the Adobe Creative software included with your membership.  You can find complete details regarding the uninstall and install process at Install and update apps - https://helpx.adobe.com/creative-cloud/help/install-apps.html.

  • After migrating to a new mac; iphoto library cannot save

    Hi,
    I'm faced with the problem that since the migration to a new mac; iphoto 11 cannot save any changes to the library. I can import, I can add an album, but if I quit Iphoto and start again every change is gone.

    Option 1
    Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
    Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords, faces and places back.
    Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

  • Why are some clips missing after migrating to my new Mac?

    My old Macbook Pro died so I got a new one and have migrated my data to the new one from a Time Machine backup. However, after doing this iMovie is telling me a lot of clips are missing. Many of them are still in tact, but in a lot of cases I see a message like: Missing File "clip-2012-09-13 07;52;06 (id)" is missing. Try reimporting the original source media. I'm using iMovie 10.0.6 and Yosemite (on both the old and new Mac).
    Can anybody tell me how I can fix this?
    Thanks

    If it matters, I have a Canon camcorder and imported the clips using a firewire cable. The external drive is connected via a second firewire cord to the other firewire port.

  • New Mac Mini - Migration Assistant Problems, New Mac Mini - Migration Assistant Problems

    Ok. So this is the scenario.
    I have just bought a brand new Mac Mini and have jut disposed of a MacBook I had since late 2007.
    I had been using time machine on the MB and thought this the best way to carry over the photos, music and everything else.
    So. I did the last time machine back up prior to the sale and have just booted up the Mini. Admittedly I did skip the 'Transfer Files' box when setting up as I just wanted to get the MM up and running and then use Migration Assistant to bring the files over. After getting going I got MA open and clicked off the applications as I had only a dew from the Mac App Store and knew I could get back from the store afterwards.
    So here's the situation. It did draw over the two accounts, mine and my fiancées. The folders which were on my desktop on the MB were just as they were. Claire's account shows too.
    But.
    The external WD drive I used for my TM back ups is showing on the desktop as a normal yellow drive, not a green TM. I opened About This Mac and instead of seeing the 105gb that was my account before, it's only showing as a minimal 10 or so. I opened iPhoto and it told me that the current library needs updating.
    I will do this if this is what I need to do, but am unsure due to the message saying once it's down it cannot be undone.
    So my Qs.
    Have I messed up somewhere?
    Do I just need to update the iPhoto library and then the photos will show?
    If I go into TM and tell the mac to use the drive, it will then do a back up but can I then open TM and go back in time to when I was backing up files from the MacBook?
    I don't really want to restore the whole drive, but wanted some advice. I've read down thing about 'inheriting' old TM backups, is this roughly what I've been explaining?
    Thanks all!

    It seems that every major release of OS X brings changes to the iPhoto Library. Update the library and your images should show up. Your external drive is not showing with a TM icon because you have not designated it as the TM drive in System Preferences > Time Machine. You should be able to inherit the old TM backups when you designate a TM drive.

  • Differences between old JavaFX and the new one: some questions

    Hi,
    I'm coming back to my JavaFX studies after 2/3 months and I see that some things are different.. Now, I have some questions:
    1) I see that javafx.ui was deprecated or rewritten in favor of javafx.ext.swing. Why there are a javafx.application.Frame and a javafx.ext.swing.SwingFrame? Which one should I use?
    2) Neither javafx.application.Frame or SwingFrame has the "*undecorated*" attribute that javafx.ui.Frame has. I got this feature only reimplementing createWindow() function like this:
    function createWindow(): java.awt.Window {
           //this is a trick, because Frame don't has a undecorated attribute.
           var f: java.awt.Window = super.createWindow();
           (f as javax.swing.JFrame).setUndecorated(true);
           return f;
    }Should I report this as a bug/RFE in [http://bugreport.sun.com/bugreport/] ? Where should I report bugs and RFEs to JavaFX?
    3) Why frame's opacity don't work in Linux? Is this a Linux restriction or only a "not yet implemented" feature?
    My java -version:
    java version "1.6.0_10"
    Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.6.0_10-b33)
    Java HotSpot(TM) 64-Bit Server VM (build 11.0-b15, mixed mode)
    4) Where is that cool feature that permits me to easily animate in JavaFX doing only x = [1..100] dur 1000? Now, I need to use this more advanced (and more complicated) Timeline object.
    Timeline {
            keyFrames:Timeline [
                    KeyFrame{time  : 0s values: x => 0.0},
                    KeyFrame{time  : 2s values: x =< 180.0 tween Interpolator.LINEAR}
            ]//keyFrames
    }//Timeline;Sorry for the amount of questions.
    TIA,
    Bruno E. Grossi

    The new ones will be substantially faster than yours because it has 8-cores instead of four, a faster Frontside Bus, and faster RAM speed.
    You could use the same RAM, but since the new ones can accommodate a faster RAM module you would cause the machine to run slower by using the slower RAM from your old machine.
    You can use the same hard drives since both machines support SATA drives.
    On the other hand you could just be happy with what you have! It's probably more than you need.

  • HT3258 after   transferring data from old mac to new mac, I can't see the transfer files and application on new mac.?

    How can I see the      data and application that I transferred from Old Mac to New Mac?
    Transfer of all the files and application was successful but I can't see it on the New Mac.
    Help.

    Thanks for your reply
    I did reboot the system.
    still can't see new user.
    One thing though when the system finished transferring the files
    at the end a message came up
    " 2013-09-11 04:18:05 +0000 Paul Nirwan could not be created.
    I did the transfer two times, same thing. first time I used the WiFi
    and second time from my back up disk with USB connection, using Migration Assistant.
    Second time also said that Paul'Mac already exist, Paul'Mac 2 created.
    How can I get rid of first data trasnferred?
    It will be using too much space on hard drive if Ileave it therre.

  • How can I migrate data to new Mac Pro with only 1 monitor

    I am ready to set up my new Mac Pro.  I know how to migrate my files from my G5 using Firewire and making the new computer a target disk.  My problem is, I have only 1 monitor.  Is there an easy way around this, OR of not, can I use my Macbook Pro just a monitor and if so how?

    If you make the new computer a FireWire Hard drive, the only thing on its monitor will be the firewire symbol. You don't need a monitor to see that.
    But if you did, you could start the new computer up first, look at the firewire symbol, get a warm fuzzy feeling, disconnect the  monitor and plug it into the old computer to make the transfers.

  • Can I keep backups when migrating to a new Mac?

    I have an existing Mac with several years of backups in Time Machine. I've bought a new Mac. I'm going to use Setup Assistant to migrate everything from the old Mac to the new Mac (directly, not through Time Machine), and will retire the old Mac. Will I then have access to the old backups on my new Mac, or are the backups tied to a particular computer?

    See Item 17. For all things Time Machine: Please visit Pondini's Time Machine FAQ for help with all things Time Machine.

  • Time Machine: Cannot access old backups after migrating to a new mac

    Hello,
    I have bought a new Mac (With Snow Leopard installed on it). I have used it for about half an hour to have fun with it.
    Then, I have decided to use Time Machine & Migration Assistant to restore all my files from my old Mac (Leopard). The restoration was successful and I was very happy to see that all my files and settings were there.
    However, when I try to access my old backups (the ones I have done prior to buying the new Mac), Time Machine says I do not have the permissions to access it.
    Is there an way to fix this? I would like to be able to access these old files.

    I am having a similar problem and do not understand the solution. I have a new Macbook and transferred my data from my Powerbook G4. However, I cannot access anything! There is a no entry sign on the folders and if I click them I get this message: 'The folder “Pictures” can’t be opened because you don’t have permission to see its contents.'
    Help - but please, in simple language
    Thanks

  • Getting Slow after Migration to a new Mac

    Every time, I've bought a new Mac and using Migration Assistant to migrate my data to new Mac. The new Mac is getting slower, not look like a hardware upgrade. For example, my Macbook Pro i5 needs more than 10 seconds to start MS Word while my MBA needs less than 2 seconds.
    Will there so many scrap or unused data migrated from my old mac? And my "migration data" has been accumulated for several times since 5~6 years ago. I've used this "migration data" for every new Mac arrives. So, This is not the first time I've expereinced, this was happens several times when I bought a new Mac.
    Please note that Spotlight Indexing is complete.
    Thanks.

    Thanks for your suggestions. I've updated the software already (noticing that it was system, i-movie and garage band which were being updated) but that didn't help. Previously that did help for i-photo though.
    Anyway, I tried the sudo thing, I got the following messages but still no i-movie :

  • Migration assistant to new Mac identical username

    If my old Mac the user was Joe and I have already started using my new mac with a user called Joe what are my options?

    You can migrate your old Home folder and change the username or you can create a new user with a different name, log into the new account and delete the other Joe account. Then migrate your old Home folder. Log into the migrated Home folder, delete the temporary user account, restart the computer.
