Migrating existing email from 10.4 NON-server to 10.6 server, ~beginner

I have been running a domain for many years off a stock Mac OS running plain 10.4, with a few third-party config aids. I want to move the whole domain to 10.6 Server, but my current question focuses on migrating emails. I fully expect to have to manually recreate all the user accounts (alternative ideas are welcome), but I want to maintain the entire email history for these accounts, as-is. (I use IMAP exclusively, so all the files reside on the server.)
In my 10.4 system, inbox emails live in /var/mail, and anything else that's in a mail folder lives in ~/Library/Mail/IMAP/{folders} . Here are some things I don't know:
1) How (if at all) the 10.6 implementation of mail services differs regarding location/format of email files. Also, if there's any difference in the functionality of /etc/aliases.
2) How to transfer the files from old server to the new one. This is a "one box" domain. Since the domain's DNS (and web, ftp, firewall, etc.) is hosted on the same machine, I'm not sure how I could have them live on the internet at the same time (though obviously I can have one machine acting purely as a client on my network). I do have an extra static IP available as well.
3) How I might minimize downtime, and park in the ether any inbound email messages to my domain while I make the transition and debug it.
I'm hesitant to POP the messages off the server into a client, and POP them back on to the new server, for fear of losing the original time stamps (which are crucial), plus it'd be a big hassle. On the other hand, I don't know what havoc would come from trying to replace or splice in my existing email server files onto the new machine.
I have successfully configured a different domain on 10.6 Server, though it was a PITA, and took several attempts. (Not looking forward to another DNS set up. And woe be to those who wish to change the initial IP number on a SLS machine - there are residual references that are unreachable even with the CLI tools.) So I'm not a total noob, but also I'm not a network admin wizard by any stretch.
I'd welcome any helpful advice on this question, or generic strategies for porting an existing domain to 10.6 server. User files, permissions, web servers are pretty straightforward, though I'd also be curious if there's a SLS firewall configuration equivalent (in function and ease of setup) to standard OS X "internet sharing" preference, which I currently use (with two ethernet ports). Thanks so much.

Thanks very much Jeff. The first sentence gets to the nut-meat of the issue (though I leave the question open for any additional comment).
And I appreciate the links to migration tools. My recollection - perhaps wrong - is that the 10.6 migration tools only work for earlier versions of OS X Server, and not for the end-user OS (which is what I have now).
My server has a half-dozen or so user accounts, with a total volume of <10 GB of email files - small. (There are also hundreds of email account aliases, which is why I asked about /etc/aliases functionality.)
The concept of DNS is simple, but I always have a hard time telling if I've screwed up the configuration or a "failure" is just propagation latency of the domain/IP mapping - I don't have an intermediate DNS server/service between the domain registrar and my domain's server, which can make DNS config and testing quite frustrating.
The rationale for NAT/DHCP has to do with internal network architecture and layered security for remote (e.g., VNC) access, but the whole story is not very interesting. I will take your point under advisement, though.

  • Migrate existing email from MS Outlook 2011 (mac) to Apple Mail?

Is there an easy (no cost) way to migrate my old mail (including folders) from MS Office Outlook 2011 to mac Mail?
    Thanks...Scott

There are several ways to do it, the way I first thought of is to use an IMAP account and simply set up the account on both and move mail to that account.
An easy way to set up an IMAP account is to create a Gmail email address, then go into the mail settings in gmail and enable IMAP.
Once you've set up IMAP on the Gmail account, you can set up up on both Outlook and Apple Mail, and simply drag the mail you want into folders on the Gmail account, and they'll pop up on Apple Mail under the Gmail account.
You can then decide if you simply keep them on Gmail or if you delete them after moving them locally on Apple Mail.
I also found http://marcushesse.com/2010/exporting-mail-from-outlook-2010-mac-importing-eml-f iles-into-apple-mail/  which details a way of converting the stuff folder by folder over to eml files that can be used in Apple Mail.
I think the email converter application they link on there is very useful for your task.
At the end of all this conversion and moving files around, you should seriously consider setting yourself up with an IMAP account with whatever provider you end up sticking with, since that means you simply set up your email address in Apple Mail, or on the iPad, or iPhone, or PC and it simply has everything once it downloads it fresh, no need for any more migrations of this sort.

  • Migrate the email from Blackberry to outlook

    Hi
I use the pop3 email service to receiving the email on my BB, I would like to migrate the email from my BB to my outlook (pst file). I have installed the desktop software, but the intellisync can't choose the email for sync. Is there any way can achieve it ? Thanks

BIS doesnt actually download email from your POP3 account, it will still exist on the server so just setup the POP3 account in outlook and download the email directly. If you still wish to keep the email on your blackberry ensure you tick the option "leave mail on server" in the account options in Outlook.

    Hi,
You can use export/import or transportable tablespaces to migrate the database.

How long the task would take? Depends on the hardware resources you have. The best practice is to try this on a test instance first.
The application should work as expected once the task is completed.

  • How do I set up an account to receive email from my SMTP relay Server. Have I made a SMTP Server config error?

    Hi,
How do I set up an account to receive email from my SMTP Relay Server?
I've setup the SMTP feature and set my Server to use anonymous authentication.
    Things appear to look ok.
But I can't connect make a test connection to it when I am trying to add an email account in Outlook.
I could be doing something wrong here.
    This is my process.
    1. I have setup my SMTP Server.
    2. Created a user account in AD and given it an email address.
    3. Opened Outlook and tried to manually add a POP3 account by specifying the incoming and outgoing Server details.
But when I go to test the connection on the email setup it keeps failing.
    Please help.
    Thanks

  • How can i Migrate a database from DB2 to SQL Server 2008r2.

    Hi Gurus,
Kindly help me letting me know the process for migrating the database from DB2 to SQL Server.
    1) Is there any way to migrate a database from DB2 to SqlServer. (My assumption is we can not migrate database, if wrong correct me gurus).
    2) Or we can only transfer data from that DB2 database to SQL Server (Using SSIS packages).
Please help me knowing the process to migrate the data from DB2 server to MSSQL server. Even am reading the documents available in the web.
    Thanks in advance.. :)

Microsoft provide a migration assistant for DB2 to SQL Server:
    http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=45296
SQL Server Migration Assistant (SSMA) is a free supported tool from Microsoft that simplifies database migration process from DB2 to SQL Server and Azure SQL DB. SSMA automates all aspects of migration including migration assessment analysis, schema and
SQL statement conversion and data migration.
    Hope that helps

  • Cheapest way to upgrade from 10.6 (non-server) to 10.7 (server)

I need to upgrade my MacPro from 10.6 (non-server) to 10.7 (server). I thought I could go to the App Store and pay $49.99 to do this, but it is saying that isn't possible. Do I need to upgrade to Lion first and then upgrade to Lion server? $80?
I know this is still amazingly cheap, and was just wondering if there is a way to go from A to B for only $49.99.

Do I need to upgrade to Lion first and then upgrade to Lion server? $80?
    Yes, that's correct.

  • Can not send email from 2013 to 2010 server?

I've got an Exchange 2010 and 2013 coexistence scenario (migration project). I'm not able to send an email from a mailbox residing on Exchange 2013 to a mailbox residing to Exchange 2010. I've tested the following with powershell send-mailmessage:
    Send-MailMessage -Body "" -To User2013 -SmtpServer 2010server -From "" -Subject "" > succesfull
    Send-MailMessage -Body "" -To User2013 -SmtpServer 2013server -From "" -Subject "" > succesfull
    Send-MailMessage -Body "" -To User2010 -SmtpServer 2010server -From "" -Subject "" > succesfull
    Send-MailMessage -Body "" -To User2010 -SmtpServer 2013server -From "" -Subject "" > NOT succesfull
I also can send an email from an user on the Exchange 2013 server to our mailgateway (smarthost). I've added no additional receive connectors
on the Exchange 2013 server. The email that's not delivered remains in the Exchange 2013 queue. Exchange 2010 is still the main email server so all messages are delevired to this server (have not moved mailboxes yet).
We've got one 2010 server and one 2013 server with all roles installed.
What am I missing here, or will this work when I make Exchange 2013 the dedicated server?
    Thnx Remco

    Hi,
From your description, when you send an email from Exchange 2013 to Exchange 2010, the email will remain in the Exchange 2013 queue. Please check the error message in the Queue Viewer, if it is: "451 5.7.3 Cannot achieve Exchange Server authentication."
If yes, this issue is because the Exchange server can't authenticate with the remote Exchange server. Authentication is required for Exchange servers to route internal emails between them.

could any one tell me as to how i could read the mail from the exchange server and store it in a seperate folder.

I have an application which reads the mail from our mail server and then writes the body of the message into a file and then deletes the email anf those values are then read from that file and stored into the database .
Here is the code which pops the mail from the exchange server and then stores it into a file .

  • Delete emails from iPhone but NOT server ?

    Hi all,
    I have just upgraded to a iPhone 5C from a 4S.
On my 4s, when i deleted my emails from the Mail app, it kept them unread on my computer/ipad.
With my 5c, it deletes them from the server when deleting on the phone.
How do I have it so when I delete emails from my 5C, it keeps them UNREAD in my inbox on the computer?
Looks everywhere, I have all HOTMAIL accounts
    Thanks

You will need to set up the Hotmail account as a POP3 account instead of an IMAP account.

  • Migration of Database from Oracle to SQL Server in Business Objects XI 3.1

    Hi,
Currently, We are working on Business Objects XI 3.1 and Database is  Oracle 11g. And now we have the requirement to migrate from Oracle 11g to SQL Server 2008 R2.
I would like to know what are the key points to be considered in business objects XI 3.1 when the database is migrated from oracle to SQL server.
If anyone can share the Impact analysis document for Business Objects, it would be great.
    Thanks,
    Lavanyaa TP

If you use business objects tools for such migration , the impact should be minimal.
CMSDBCopy mechanism from CCM should work fine for this purpose.

  • How to send email from OSB with Mail server that requires SSL or STARTTLS

    Hi everyone.
My leader ask me configuration on OSB to support send email to my company mail server (using https chanel) and customer email (some of them is gmail that require STARTTLS or SSL).
I've configured OSB as tutorial in that link: http://blogs.oracle.com/christomkins/entry/sending_an_email_from_oracle_s
But OSB cannot send email from mail account that configured because it cannot login to mail server. I think the reason is secure authentication with SSL or TLS.
There some problems that similar to mine in this forum but has nobody solved it yet.
Can you tell me the solution you know? Any suggestion is appreciated.
    Regards
    Cuong Pham

I know I'll offer you just a workaround and not a real solution, but you can try to start your own (intermediate) SMTP server to communicate with OSB (without SSL). Then you can just relay all the messages to your "real" SMTP server which requires SSL. If you start your intermediate SMTP server on the OSB host (localhost), then this layout could be acceptable even from security point of view.

During the last few months my Thunderbird email account has been receiving many duplicates of emails from the yahoo (AT&T) server. This happens only when I receive e-mails that have large attachments like multiple photos. My spouse has the same problem on her email account. Frequently I receive 25 duplicates of the same email in my inbox.
    I'm on Thunderbird release 31.5.0.
    My server setting is = pop.att.yahoo.com port = 995
My Outgoing server name is = smtp.att.yahoo.com

Antivirus Program = Microsoft Security Essentials
    Other system info:
Thunderbird 31.5.0 with Yahoo (AT&T) webmail.
    TB Server Name = pop.att.yahoo.com, port = 995, SSL/TLS.
    Outgoing Server (SMTP) settings = smtp.att.yahoo.com, port 465, SSL/TLS.
Leave messages on server is UNCHECKED.
    Windows XP, Version 2002 SP3.
Pentium 4, 2.66 GHz CPU, 2.5 GB RAM.
TB Email used to work perfectly for many years with these settings and equipment. A few months ago me & my wife's TB email accounts began to receive over thirty duplicates of any emails in our inbox that have large attachments like photos.

  • How to send PLAIN text email from sp_send_dbmail using SQL Server 2008 R2?

I have configured Database Mail in SQL Server 2008 R2 (64) and it sends emails just fine. However the destination is recieving the body of thes message as Base 64 encoding.
    Snippet:
    EXEC msdb..sp_send_dbmail @profile_name='Outmail', @recipients = @recpts, @subject = @subj, @body_format = 'TEXT', @body=@body2;
As you can see I set @body_format to TEXT, but it still sends Base 64. I need to send plain ASCII text. How can I change this?

I am having this exact issue too.  I have a trigger that sends an email using a stored procedure.  The dbmail is sending the email using the Exchange 2010 server SMTP.  It does not login so the email is relayed as user = "Anonymous".
The SQL dbmail email header is showing the following:
    Content-Type: text/plain; charset="utf-8"
    Content-Transfer-Encoding: base64
    MIME-Version: 1.0
    X-MS-Exchange-Organization-AuthSource: MX01.domain.local
    X-MS-Exchange-Organization-AuthAs: Anonymous
Here is the header if I send via Outlook profile using the legacy program I am trying to automate using SQL Server 2008R2:
    Content-Type: application/ms-tnef; name="winmail.dat"
    Content-Transfer-Encoding: binary
    MIME-Version: 1.0
    X-MS-Has-Attach:
    X-MS-Exchange-Organization-SCL: -1
    X-MS-TNEF-Correlator: <[email protected]>
    MIME-Version: 1.0
    X-MS-Exchange-Organization-AuthSource: MX01.domain.local
    X-MS-Exchange-Organization-AuthAs: Internal
    X-MS-Exchange-Organization-AuthMechanism: 03
    X-Originating-IP: [192.168.13.66]
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
