Migrating from 10.4.11 Server to Mavericks (App) Server

Hello All!
We have recently purchased a new Mac Mini 2.3GHz quad-core i7 with OS Server, in the hope of replacing our current G5 X-Serve running 10.4.11.
I would like it to be known that I am not a server administrative wizard, but am aware that the migration from 10.4.11 to an Intel-based system is not as pleasant as I had imagined.
Our G5 hosts our Mail database (Cyrus IMAP) - and this is my primary concern. I have read that the new Mail service differs hugely from Cryus (Dovecot - if Im not mistaken?). We rely hugely on archive mail for legal reasons and losing it is not an option. I will of course have Carbon Copy Cloned the X Serve before carrying out any migration, and certainly intend to leave the old hog alone if I need to revert to it at a later stage.
The only documentation I can find is the Apple Technical document which outlines how to migrate from 10.4.11 to Snow Leopard Server 10.6 - this is an issue for me, since I have Mavericks now installed on the Mac Mini and "reverting" back to an older OS is rather difficult (especially with no superdrive).
Could anybody please point me in the right direction? Is it likely that I will need to downgrade the Mini's OS first? Or have Apple already produced literature which can guide me through this process?
Help!

Migration Assistant will not overwrite the OS or replace newer versions of applications with older ones. It is designed to do what you presumably want to do: make the transition from the older to newer Mac(s) as smooth as possible.
One thing: if it is convenient to do so, I suggest you connect each old & new Mac by Firewire, with the older one in Firewire Target Disk Mode, to do the Migration. This will be the fastest way to do the migration.

Hello everyone,
I need advice on how to migrate the Wiki and Mail from a backup of a (no longer existing) 10.8.X Server to a complete fresh installation (= I didn't do an upgrade!!!!) of a 10.9 Server.
I would prefer CLI-commands and not the migration-assistant!

Hello Tim
Thank you very much for going into this! What is AFAIK?!
Unfortunately it's not so straight forward for me - non of them did help me? I get error-messages I can't interpret.
Regarding schema:
this is printscreen from the Mavericks Server showing the path /Library/Server/Wiki
this is the printscreen from the Mountain Lion Server Backup where the path is the same:
Yet, the contents of the Wiki-Folders are different. The Database.xpg and PostgresSocket Folders aren't there in the ML-installation, and they never where.
I don't have hardware where I could install the ML-Server so I need get hands on to the data I have and make usable again

• DFS New Setup migrating from 2003 R2 file server to 2012 Server STD

We currently have a 2003 R2 flat file server with multiple layers of nested network shares with over 2.5TB of data. We want to migrate to DFS on 2012 Server standard version with deduplication enabled. We have never worked with DFS and deduplication and
any white paper on DFS and deduplication would be greatly appreciated. Not finding anything on DFS step by step for 2012 and in particular migrating from 2003 file share to 2012 server DFS.

Thank you for the URL to your DFS write up. This was very helpful in my research of DFS. I have a couple of questions. Do I have to start DFS with two servers? I completely understand why you should have more than one server in the DFS pool (high
availability) but is it necessary? Also after setting up the two 2012 Servers with DFS, namespaces, and new shares managed by DFS manager, how do we migrate (move or copy) the existing shares to new server without losing the permissions? From what I've read
in your write-up all end users with have read and write permissions and admins have full. Also is there a best practice on how nested the shares should be setup within DFS? From looking at your write up the shares are one folder deep only. At this
company I'm migrating from a file server with shares 3-8 layers deep build up over the last 20 years.

• Migrating from antique 10.3 server to 10.6 managed environment. tips?

Hi, I'm migrating an old 10.3 Server to 10.6 (new hardware) and I was wondering if anyone had any tips or warnings before we start this process.
10.3 server only has following services active: AFP, Mail, OD, Web. It's important to note that users simply mount AFP directories. There is no single-signon at play or Networked/Mobile Home folders.
on 10.6 we'd like to get these basic services up and running as quickly as possible then switch users to Network/Mobile Home folders.
I'm not expecting (nor do even think it's possible) to "migrate" anything from 10.3 to 10.6. Because of this I plan to archive all email that is stored on server (cyrus 10.3) to each user's local Mail.app (10.6).
The new server will be set-up from scratch and all active current users will be recreated as well as the file system which is not too complex. Share Points will be copied to the new server and permissions adjusted recursively.
My biggest areas of concern are *1) how best to handle migration of mail on server?* Which I think will be simplest if each user archives locally and then we switch services to the new 10.6 host and, basically, abandon the 10.3 cyrus mail stores. BUT, that gives rise to my next, larger, concern: *2) how then to migrate current 10.6 clients to managed Networked/Mobile clients?* Especially when considering the 10.6 clients have *local users* logging into *local accounts* that were previously accessing the 10.3 server for mail & AFP.
Any/all tips or experiences with this would be helpful!
Thanks!

You may want to take a look here http://wiki.dovecot.org/Migration/Cyrus and see if any of the scripts will suit your needs. Dovecot mail boxes match the "Generated UID" that is viewable in the Inspector portion of the Workgroup Manager app for each user account.
When we moved from 10.3.9 to 10.6 it was determined that to avoid future complications new user and group accounts with the same UID would be created on the new server.
Then it was just a matter of transferring data to the appropriate directories and making sure that the data had the correct permissions. If you are moving from local homes to network homes, you can copy any required items from the local machine to the newly created network home. Users downloaded their mail to their local mail database via POP prior to the move. Since SquirrelMail is still used as webmail it may be possible to migrate from the previous version but you will want to know where the data lives on both the new and old server prior to the move. Check the SquirrelMail website for further information on migration between versions.

Hi Paul,
as hints are highly database specific it may well be that you won't need them for your new DBMS anymore.
In any case you've to review them one-by-one to check the execution plan of the queries without a hint.
A general "migration of hints" is neither possible nor sensible.

• Migrating from Development to Test Server

Hi
I have developed an OA extension page and deployed it.
But now once I want to move my extension page from development to test server how do I do it. My doubts are because:
While developing the pages I specified the connection username and password which is stored in the bc4j.xcfg file.
What is the best way to deploy the OA Extension pages in respect to migration.
Thanks
Abhi

Yes my concern is the DB connection!
My doubt is because of the following entry in the bc4j.xcfg file.

<BC4JConfig>
<ConnectionDefinition name="DEV">

develop

</ConnectionDefinition>
</BC4JConfig>
So while migrating to test server will i have to modify this file or this entry is required because we are using jdeveloper on the local machine.
Can you tell me the relevance of this config file.
Thanks
Abhi

• Migrating from an OLD G4 Server to a new G5 Server

I have been running Server 10.5.8 on my G4 without a problem for the last year. Now we are upgrading to a new G5 server and was wondering how can I migrate the email accounts from my users.
I know that I have to export all my OD users and import them back in the new machine, setup the DNS (or can I copy these settings?) among other things.
This is our email server using IMAP and I just dont want to lose all my users emails. Is there an easy way of doing it?
TIA!

I did this from xServe G4 -> G5 Mac Pro -> xServe Intel a while back when our G4 died - while we don't run email on it, we do have OD Master, iCal, Wiki etc, and operate in "Simple" mode.
Each time I booted the "old" machine off the 10.5 DVD, and did a disk copy (image restore?) from disk to External drive, then did same on new machine and restored from External drive to server. The last time I did it (to Intel xServe) I had no authentication (corrupt LDAP I think) but an OD restore from a recent OD archive got that back up and running.
Considering it was 3 transitions from old to latest technology, I was pretty impressed it went so smooth...

• Howto migrate from corrupt 10.4 server to fresh 10.4 server

Ok, I'm screwed, and I really appreciate the help in advance.
I'm not sure what happened, but my 10.4.11 server will not boot into the login screen (or beyond). I have booted from the Install DVD and backed up the HD to an external HD. Then I ran Disk Utility and repaired the disk (which needed the repair), and then repaired permissions.
But the machine still wouldn't boot into the login screen (or beyond). It just gets stuck on a blue screen with a (startup style) pinwheel. I do not have any haxies installed on this machine - its a straight-up headless server.
I can boot into single user mode, and I've tried deleting all of the caches and running the periodic tasks, and everything I can think of.
I've tried zapping the PRAM.
The machine still won't boot into the login screen (or beyond). I've resigned myself to formatting and reinstalling.
The services that I use are web and email... and I have over 100 email users. How do I migrate my users and their emails and the server settings from the backup to the freshly installed server?
Thank you in advance for your help.

Thanks for the reply. Unfortunately, that resource assumes that I'm migrating from a prior version to 10.4 (I'm migrating from a borked 10.4), and it assumes that I can export settings from a working server (again, my setup is borked, unfortunately).
I know Apple makes good stuff, but I'm surprised that this hasn't happened to anyone else.

• Migration from Windows Small Business Server 2003 to Snow Leopard Server

Hello,
I'm going to migrate a Windows Small Business Server 2003 Standard to a Mac Mini Snow Leopard Server 10.6.x in a few weeks.
I have 2 questions :
Is there an official process to migrate my Exchange server datas ?
Snow Leopard Server has it Wizards to help me to muigrate datas to proper services ?
Thanx
Regards,
Gil DERENNE aka --( dB )--

Thank you for your reply
My network will be Apple only in a few time (1 server, 1 iMac and 1 Mac Pro).
Now, I want to replace server and all services installed on it :
- Active Directory (replaced by Open Directory)
- Users/Groups/machines
- NAT/Firewall and Backup (will be replaced by a Time Capsule)
- VPN for mobile access
- File and Printer sharing
- Fax Services with Fax/Modem 56K !oops! (replaced by a free service offer by my ISP)
- Mail/Calendar/Address book and notes with Exchange (replaced by each service to serv right thing : Mail, iCal, Address book...).
I know what to do with all things but not for replacing Exchange and transfer datas to each similar service in Snow Leopard.
In the network, Mail Server will be used by Outlook with IMAP protocol and other services by web interface (Windows computers are not a problem for me, it can be alone and only access web if necessary).
The number of clients inside the LAN :
- 2 iPhones
- 1 iPod Touch
- 1 PC Windows Vista (for a few time) with some VM (Linux and Windows)
- 1 iMac 27' with 1 VM (Windows)
- 1 LAN Printer HP Deskjet 6127 (RJ45 Static IP connection)
The number of clients outside the LAN :
- 3 PC Windows XP
- 2 PC Windows Vista
- 5 Nokia Smart Phones
When I'm going to by the Mac Mini Server with Snow Leopard Server, is there some support to help me to do it whith them and is it free or do I have to buy AppleCare to access to this service ?

• Migrating from Oracle to SQL Server - data won't migrate but no errors

I'm attempting to migrate a database from an Oracle 11g (11.1.0.7.0 64-bit) database to a SQL Server 2008 R2 (10.50.4033.0). I'm using SSMA, and the Oracle tool was installed on the target SQL Server by the DBA. I've completed all the steps up
to and including synchronizing the database, and the empty tables all exist in SQL Server. When I run the step to migrate the data, I get:
Migrating data...
Analyzing metadata...
Preparing table POLICYS.LOGINS...
Preparing data migration package...
Starting data migration Engine
Starting data migration...
Data migration operation has finished.
0 table(s) successfully migrated.
0 table(s) partially migrated.
1 table(s) failed to migrate.
Then a summary box appears, and there is a red X next to the table (I'm trying to just convert 1 small table to begin with.) What immediately appears to be wrong is that the "To" table is blank.
I've attempted this multiple times, different tables (initially tried all tables) and tried both Server Side and Client Side migrations with the same result. There are no errors or warnings on the Error List.
I've found another online post where the user had the same issue, but in that instance they fixed it by changing the case of the table name. I tried that, but it didn't help. I'm not sure what is wrong that it won't migrate any data. Any help
is appreciated. TIA

• Data MIgration from Oracle to SQL Server 2005

HI Gurus,
Kindly please advice me how to migrate Data from oracle to MS SQL Server or Vice Versa.
I came to know about 2 methods:
1) Using SQL Developer
2) USing ODBC.
KIndly let me know which method is better. I am in confusion about both option
Kindly advice over the same
Thanks

Usually such questions asked and answered on forums of a target system. In this case on MS SQL forums.
But I will answer.
You should create a LINKED SERVER in MS SQL that connects to Oracle.
Then issue couple of SELECT * INTO <TARGET_TABLE> FROM <ORACLE LINKED SERVER>..<SRC SCHEMA>.<SRC TABLE>.
Install Oracle Client and OLE DB driver on SQL Server machine.
Also, Oracle is case sensitive by default. MS SQL is case insensitive by default. If there are primary/unique keys that have mixed case values in Oracle, then in MS SQL you need to set case sensitive collation for them.
PS. If you need not only migrate data one time, but also to have a real time replication during an application transition period, you can take a look on heterogeneous replication solutions like Golden Gates or DataCurrents.

• Migrate from Test to New Server - OBIEE

Hi,
I have been 'evaluating' OBIEE functinality on a small test server for some time, where I have done a large amount of work on both writing reports. developing dashboards, configuring user security and the necessary data architecture in the physical / business model and presentations layers in BI Adminstration.
My question is, what is the easiest way to port the solution as it stands to a different server, without needing to perform extensive rework?
Thanks for any advice,
Robert.

Lowest level: copy the RPD and web catalog over to the other server, adjust the NQSConfig.ini and instanceconfig.xml and off you go.
That's assuming you didn't change any web messages, add custom pictures or files, change the styles and/or skins, you're still pointing to the same data sources etc. etc.
You should have a look at one of Marks write-ups from a while back: http://www.rittmanmead.com/2008/04/28/migration-obiee-projects-between-dev-and-prod-environments/
Cheers,
