Migrating from Informix 4GL to Oracle

How difficult is it,to convert existing Informix 4gl code to Oracle. I'm searching
for a product that will take an existing
Unix text based app. and make it look like
Windows. This app. contains hundreds of
modules as well as hundreds of custom functions.
Thanks for your help!
Ken

There seems to be a gap between the support for Transparent Gateway reg. Oracle8 versions and SQLServer 7.
So far I've only found TG:s up to Oracle 8.0.3, next step is Oracle 8.1.x . I'm currently planning to run a linked replication between a Ora 8.0.6 running on HP/UX and SLQ Server 7.0. Would that work with a TG for 8.0.3 ?

  • Migration from Informix 9.4 to Oracle 10g

We have to perform a migration from Informix 9.4 to Oracle 10g. Many tables, many data and many stored procs.
We use the Online mode and the imports finish with any errors, but it has not recovered any stored procedures or we can't view the Informix Stored Procedures in the Source Model in the workbench.
In the importation log appears as no found procedures, but under owner informix are all procedures.
    What we can do?

In the 10.1.0.4 version of the workbench we create an informix user who will have all the stored procedures.
If you want these migrated as another user you can right click on the user in the oracle model and rename it for a start.
If this is a large migration, I would recommend the following.
    1. generate the ddl for the oracle database.
    2. for the users, that will be created, move the objects to the users that you want these in.
    3. Make sure that the privileges that a particular user has is appropriate to use the data and execute the stored procedures if necessary.
This tool is not just a one shot deal.. It will bring the informix db over to Oracle, but you need to verify the structure and the logic of the stored procedures as being correct.

Before Migrating From Informix Dynamic Server
To configure an Informix Dynamic Server database for migration:
1.Verify that the Informix Dynamic Server JDBC Driver JAR file, ifxjdbc.jar, is located in the following directory:
    On Windows:
    OMWB_install_dir\Omwb\drivers
    On UNIX:
    OMWB_install_dir/Omwb/drivers
2.If necessary, install the Informix Dynamic Server JDBC Driver, version 1.4:
1.Insert the Informix Dynamic Server CD into your CD drive.
2.Follow the instructions in the install.txt file located in the JDCC directory to install the Informix Dynamic Server JDBC driver.
3.Copy the ifxjdbc.jar file of the driver to the following directory:
    OMWB_install_dir\Omwb\drivers
    On Windows:
    OMWB_install_dir\Omwb\drivers
    On UNIX:
    OMWB_install_dir/Omwb/drivers
3.Ensure that you can connect to the Informix Dynamic Server database from the system where you have installed Migration Workbench.

  • Error while migration from Informix 7

    Hello,
Im migration a database from Informix 7 to Oracle 9.2 using OMWB 9.2.0.1.7 and it dont migrate all the data.
I think its a problem with the date conversion.
Informix uses two types of formats:
    DATE: yyyy-mm-dd
    DATETIME: yyyy-mm-dd hh:mm:ss
Do someone knows how to fix this problem. OMWB only migrate rows that doesnt have date.
    Best Regards,
    Santiago

    Hello,
I'm doing the same thing and I solved that problem with 2 options:
    1. in your initXXXX.ora add a new line to set nls date
    nls_date_format='YYYY-MM-DD HH24:MI:SS'
    and then bounce the database,
change all date column in ORACLE to DATE (DATE and DATETIME will be migrate to the same column in Oracle).
Do migration again then the DATE will migrate with 00:00:00 (2004-01-26 00:00:00) and DATETIME: yyyy-mm-dd hh:mm:ss will migrate with time (2004-01-26 12:01:01).
    2. If you want DATE and DATETIME seperate in Oracle then you need to change the nls_date_format = 'YYYY-MM-DD' or whatever format you want like 'DD-MM-YYYY' then bounce the database and change the column that holds DATETIME in ORACLE to TIMESTAMP(2) (Oracle 9i have the TIMESTAMP datatype and (2) means 2 digits for second, default will be TIMESTAMP(6) 6 digits for second), then migrate the data.
I used option 1 and It worked for me.
BTW. Do you have any BYTE column in your Informix 7 database? If you do how did it work with OMWB 9.2.0.1.7?.

    Tom

  • Migration of Informix Database to Oracle

I'm currently looking for a migrationtool to migrate an Informix

    Chris,
Presently the Workbench does not migrate from Informix,
however there are a series of script based tools that presently
exist that may be of help. They are available for download from
OTN, under the Migration Toolkits section under Migration
    Workbench.

  • Loading clob data/Migrating from Informix

    Hi,
I wanted to understand a way to insert clob data into the database. I see that you have ways of retrieving and displaying the clobs/blobs in your demo programs. But, how do we go about inserting clob data into a column? And especially, How to accomplish this when the data is stored in the form of a file?
We're in the process of migrating from Informix to Oracle and Informix has this way of storing the clob contents into .EMB files. Moreover, there is no one-to-one correspondence between each clob column and an .EMB file. Informix just knows how to load them up when you use FILETOCLOB(). In similar lines, do we have a way to load clob data from files to start with. And would be glad to get some intricacies on achieving the migration of data from Informix database.
Please send me pointers to docs and procedures, if available.
    Thanks for your time
    Chandra M.

  • Can Migration work bench be used to migrate from Informix to

    Peddu,
Informix support is planned, but will not be available in the

Less user-friendly script based kits for informix and other
databases can be downloaded from the OTN Migration Technology
    section.
    Hope that helps,

  • Problems while migrating from mySql DB to oracle DB

    Hi All,
I'm using sql developer tool to migrate from MySql DB to oracle DB. I followed the below steps.
    1) I've created oracle and mysql connections successfully.
    2) I've captured Mysql data and I'm able to see the captured model in ' Captured Models ' window. After that right clicked on the captured model and selected ' Set Data Mapping'. Selected ' apply ' button without changing anything. After that I've right clicked on the captured model and selected ' Convert to Oracle Model ' . It has shown the converting process. After some time it has shown conversion completed successfully.
But converted model is not visible in ' Converted Models ' window.
Can anyone kindly assist on how to migrate from MySql Db to Oracle DB?
    Thanks,
    Saty.

    Hi,
We did mysql to oracle migration some time back and played with workbench tool and many other softwares available.
However our experience was not so good with these tools, each tool had its own limitation and was not able to migrate 100% data. Even the speed of migration was too slow which would have violated our production SLAs.
So after spending a month with these tools we finally decided to create our own scripts for data migration. We used tools like TOAD and SQL Yok to create the DDL for the tables and other DB objects.
For the data migration we downloaded the mysql data in flat files and used sql loader to upload the same data in oracle. Even if this was a time consuming activity but this resulted in 100% data migration with no record getting failed and the time taken for this activity was around 6 Hrs in comparison to time of 24-28 Hrs that the workbench tool took.

  • Migrate from  Ingres DB to Oracle

    Hi Friends,
I have to migrate from Ingres DB to Oracle and the application developed by Oracle Forms. How can we do this any process of docs.
From my research,I came to know about Transparent gateways,But Oracle will support for this or not I'm not sure.Any such experience shared
    will be really useful.
    Regards.

We have two more customers that currently are in the process of upgrading from MS SQL but as far as I know no one has actually performed an upgrade this far.
If you want to upgrade to OIM 9.1 you will have to wait until the upgrade scripts are available (estimated arrival H2 2008 according to the latest info I have).
If you would like to discuss this further send me an email on firstname.lastname@my_company.com (you can get the "variables" from my forum profile)

  • Migrating from SQL Server to Oracle 8i

    Hi all :),
I am trying to migrate from SQL Server to Oracle 9i.
I am using the Migration Workbench.
Everything goes fine during Capturing phase, but while
creating Oracle model the Workbench just hangs at
"Mapping Tablespaces" for over three hours.
(not exactly hangs in the sense that it responds to mouse
events and I can abort the ongoing activity ...)
What should I do ? Should I let it go on and see what
    happens.
I follow each and every step as mentioned in the
documentation ... but obviously I am doing something
    wrong. Any pointers ???
However ... if I try to migrate to Personal Oracle 8 ...
the migration goes fine from start to end ... just that
the SQL Server triggers aren't successfully migrated.

You may want to start by downloading the Oracle Migration Workbench. That generally does a reasonable job in moving the tables, stored procedures, etc. from SQL Server to Oracle. If your VB code is database agnostic, it should continue to work without any more intervention. Realistically, however, you'll rpobably have to at least tweak a few things that don't work the same way in the old ODBC/ OLE DB provider and the new one.
The hard part of migrations like this is that you may need to revisit some of your architectural decisions if you want Oracle to perform well. There are plenty of things that one does in SQL Server (i.e. frequent commits) to improve performance that have the opposite affect in Oracle. Identifying and fixing these sorts of things tends to be the largest part of a migration like this. Unfortunately, I don't know of a resource that talks addresses all the possible gotchas here.

This needs the user to have access on all_objects view and it will limit the result upto the numbers of objects returned by the all_objects view.
