Migrating from Lacie backup to iMac intel

My HD just went dead – second time on this iMac G5.
I have everything on a Lacie back up -
I am getting an iMac Intel –
I have read two ways to transfer data-
One to use the program Apple gives you – Migration Assistant
Or doing this way-
" Here"
I would like to get peoples experiences
iMac G5 20" BT Rev A /Snow iMac G3 / in the closet Performa 6115CD / ll SE   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Migration assistant works fine "most of the time". I have used it several times with no issues. The method offered by "Kappy" is essentially a manual process for accomplishing the same thing and is probably "safer" than using MA. If MA works, you will be happy. If it does not, you will think "I should have done it Kappy's way!". The choice is really yours...
Personally, I have never had any problems with MA, system updates, etc. But some have so it's always a risk to advise someone to "go for it" when you know the possibility exists for problems to occur. They are, after all, computers.....
PS Give yourself 50 points for having a backup to begin with!

  • Migration from old to new iMac do you need to use set up on new or go straight to migration?

Just got a new iMac and going to migrate from my old 2008 iMac, info from Apple Support is a bit confusing but I want to know if it is best to use the "Set Up" on new iMac before migration or go straight into migration.
Also the support info says to connect both using ethernet as one option (which is my option) and connected to your network, how do you do this as there is only one ethernet port on each machine and if connected together it would not be possible to connect to a network, ie, the internet via my ISP. Suppot says no router etc needed.
Somewhat confused so if there is anyone out there who has done this I would appreciate their comments.
Thank you for any help forthcoming.

  • Migrating from 1.25Ghz G4 to Intel iMac problem

    Hi there!
    Question in brief:
Can I install old (non-universal) software (such as IDCS2 and Qk6.5) on a new Intel iMac?
    Question at length:
Just got a new iMac here, and wanteed to do a migration (which I've done problem-free between PCC Macs) and have hit upon a problem. The new iMac will not see the old Mac (connections/cables/old mac have been tested). New man just says "Waiting for your old mac to restart"
I came here looking for an answer, and fount this post
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=4753948&#4753948
So it looks like it's going to be a LONG job. Can I just reinstall non-universal 3rd party apps from original CDs? We have NO universal software at all.
    Thanks for your help.

    Hi Kappy
Thanks for your reply. Sorry for not being clear enough – ou see I'm not exactly sure of what migration assistant is capable of.
I know that when you connect the two macs MA Upon start up (Migration Assistant) can copy the user settings. I presumed it could do this because it was copying over the newer mac's user settings at a point where the newer mac a total access to the drive. I therefore presumed that if (instead) the iMac had been started up, and then I ran MA, it would not be able to replace the user data, because it is in use.
That link I put in the original post said that I shouldn't do applications via MA from a PPC to an Intel one. So I'll have to reinstall those from the original disks. That's O.K., right?
    Thanks again ;0)

  • Is there a way to identify which files haven't been migrated from a backup?

I've just upgraded my girlfriends 13" mbp from Leopard to Snow Leopard. It was behaving a little strangely and being sluggish so I erased everything before the upgrade. I've used Migration Assistant to transfer most files from a Time Machine backup but was a bit unsure about transferring everything blindly as I'm a little worried about what was causing the problems before the upgrade. The only items I didn't select in Migration Assistant were the 'All other files and folders' in the 'Users' drop box, and the 'All other files and folders on Macintosh HD'. I left these as I wanted to investigate what exactly these files were but now I have no clue how to go about this. Is there a quick way to highlight which files were present in the backup before the upgrade that aren't there now? Are any of these files likely to be hugely important?
Also, because I backed up again after the upgrade, Migration Assistant automatically selects the last backup to migrate from instead of the one that has the missing files. Is there a way to select which backup file to use from my external drive?
    Thanks

It's usually not a good idea to upgrade a computer that's having problems. They may get fixed, but more often they'll get worse.
'All other files and folders on Macintosh HD'.
Those are other files, not in any user home folders, besides system files. On most installations, they're just a few Help files, but if you've installed things or created files at the top level of a drive, they weren't migrated.
Also, because I backed up again after the upgrade, Migration Assistant automatically selects the last backup to migrate from instead of the one that has the missing files. Is there a way to select which backup file to use from my external drive?
No, unfortunately. You can only do that with a full system restore.
If you used +Setup Assistant+ when the Mac first started up, the user accounts now on the Mac are the same ones, and you can use the "Star Wars" display to restore selected items from older backups. But you can't restore an entire home folder, or the default folders in the user's home folder (Desktop, Documents, etc.); you have to select the contents of those folders instead. See #15 in [Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions|http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/FAQ.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum).
If you used the +Migration Assistant+ app, however, the user accounts may not be recognized as being the same ones, so may not have permission to see and restore from the backups.
It's a pain, but your best bet may be to start over: do a full system restore of the last Leopard backup, per #14 in the FAQ. Then try to address the "strangely and being sluggish" issue. Once that's either fixed or you determine it isn't a big problem, just install Snow Leopard over Leopard without erasing.

  • Migrating from and synching with imac

I am about to purchase the 13'' 2.53ghz macbook pro and will migrate from my iMac. What is the best way to ensure that new work (documents/files) on my macbook pro or my imac is synched with the other machine? Would I use my idisk? If so how? Thanks J

    Hi
I too have an iMac and a MacBook which I like to keep synced (all documents the same on both machines).
I would have to second what the first reply says. Use a USB drive or a networked drive.
I have tried iDisk and quite frankly found it horribly slow and unreliable. If you don't turn on iDisK sync then you only have access to stuff if you have internet access, and if you do turn on iDisk sync it is very unreliable and slow at up loading new files , so I found I could never trust that a file would be there for me when I wanted it next. It is a nice idea, but for me anyway it does not work well enough yet.
I use a USB stick and just plug it into which ever Mac i happen to be using. This has the advantage for me over a networked drive because I can use it anywhere, I don't have to be connected to my network.
Of course mobile me will keep data like calendars and address book synced, and I have to say it does a good job there. It keeps this info synced for me across both Macs, an iPhone and iPod Touch. It is just the iDisk bit of things I find a bit clunky and slow.
    Hope this helps
    Paul

  • Migration from PPC G4Powerbook to Leopard Intel Imac

I am trying to use the Migration Assistant to transfer from G4ppc Tiger to Intel Leopard Imac running 10.5.8. All goes well until the 'Restart your old Mac' screen. When I do this and have the Firewire sign on screen on my ppc G4 powerbook, the 'Continue' button remains greyed out on my imac, and the Imac remains 'waiting for your old mac to restart'.... Is the migration profile I am attempting not possible: from ppc Tiger to Intel Leopard over Firewire?
    Thanks in anticipation,

Possible, because it has worked for some, but not recommended, because it has failed for many. Instead, follow these directions:

  • Migration from G5 Leopard to iMac Quadcore Lion

My old G5 has been running a tad slow. After 8 years, I'm retiring it to server status. I need some advice on migration. Migration Assistant fails. I've abandoned it. I've loaded most apps I need on the new machine... Here's where I need help:
    1) The G5 has two SATA volumes. A 1TB boot volume and 2TB that's devoted to iTunes. I'm going to pop the 2TB iTunes volume in a USB 2 case and point iTunes on the new iMac at that. The G5's iTunes will then get pointed at the Music folder as intended.  Will that work?
    2) As for the boot volume, it has a pretty large Documents directory under my user account. I'm presently using SuperDuper to back up this drive. That's going to run all night. If I use a jumper to hook that drive temporarily extracted from the G5 case to my iMac, can I copy the Documents files over and put it back in the G5 with a reasonable chance of the G5 being okay?
    3) I have and iPhone, several iPods and an iPad. I also have a MobileMe account, so all my calendar, contact, etc., are synched. If I log in to the iTunes store on the new iMac, the devices should retain their functionality, just with new backups, correct?
    Am I missing anything?
This is my first iMac for production use. It seems fast enough, and I like the 27-inch screen paired with my 24-inch Cinema HD display. I design newspapers in Creative Suite and I might mount the 24-inch in portrait mode... Just because I can.

Migration Assistant generates an error that says something to the effect of the G5 needing an update. After a lot of looking, an update does not exist. A google search shows a lot of people with the same issue. They also said a Time Machine backup made on a PPC machine will not translate to Intel, so I charted the course outlined above. Most of my files are on a server, so it's really just apps, settings and iTunes that need migrated. I just bought a 3TB USB drive that I'll start using for Time Machine on the new iMac. Thanks for your input.

  • Can't migrate from G4 to new iMac

I just brought home my new iMac today and can't transfer my info from my G4. It finds the firewire, but on the screen that calculates the size of the volumes to transfer it only finds the network. The users, applications and file sizes just "calculate", it just hangs and does nothing. I've waiting over 20 minutes for something to change and nothing does.
What am I not doing to get the info from old to new?

    Welcome to Apple Discussions,
You can get better help if you post everything about your two computers: system, ram, devices connected etc.
The way you connected both computers.
Just in case you don't know, for me it has worked this way.
Permissions repaired in the old Mac
Both connected via firewire - the iMac first - the old one started holding down "T" key - in Utilities Folder "Migration Assistant" will guide you.
    Hopefully this can help you

  • How to migrate from Powerbook pro to iMac with music on ext HD ?

    Hello.
I am using my Powerbook pro to manage my 100GB of music stored on an external hard drive.
I just bought an iMac and would like to migrate my music but still use the same external HD to store it. I must NOT loose my playlists, artwork and star classification in the process. This is very important to me.
What is the safest way to do it ?
Thank you in advance for any useful answer.

copy the entire iTunes folder from the old to the new machine, overwriting the one in place there. this folder contains the iTunes library file, the database that holds the info for media location, playlists, playcounts, ratings, etc. when iTunes launches, it will look for that library file
connect the external to the new Mac and wait for it to mount. launch iTunes and enjoy.

  • Restort Iphoto from lacie backup?

I am trying to restore my iphoto library from my harddrive back up.  How do I do this without creating a second library?  I have the files on the Lacie extarnal hard drive.  I am just not sure how best to get them into iphoto or what to import.
    Thanks!

If you use it for Time Machine:
    1. Open Finder, go to the folder you had the library and open Time Machine.
    2. Go to the backup you want to restore, select the iPhoto library and choose Restore.
If not, go to the external disk and copy the library to your Pictures folder

  • DRM Error (Netflix) after Migrating from 24" to 27" iMac

So, I got my new 27" iMac this week and I'm happy with it. I tried streaming a movie via Netflix with the new machine and I'm getting a Digital Rights Management (DRM) Error.
    This is what it says:
"We're sorry, but there is a problem playing protected (DRM) content. This error usually occurs after migrating your settings to a new computer. Please call Netflix . . ."
So, I called Netflix and they instructed me to delete the Silverlight plug-in then reinstall. I tried that and I'm still getting the error message. I'd call Netflix again, but I don't think that will help.
Anyone have a solution to this?
    Thanks.

Other than the fact that the directory is /Library/Application Support/Microsoft/PlayReady not /Library/Application/Microsoft/Playready and that you need to restart safari afterwards, this solution worked for me.
    docxray wrote:
I encountered the same problem today (May 25, 2011), called Netflix and was told to update Silverlight. That didn't work, so I looked for info in this forum. The quick and easy fix was the suggestion to delete the mspr.hds file from the hardisk/Library/Application/Microsoft/Playready folder. No need to create a new user account.

  • HT4796 Data Migration from PC backup drive?

What is the easiest way to transfer data from a PC backup hard drive?  My computer (old PC) is now completely frozen up on boot up and is worthless.  I can not download the Migration Assistant to that computer.  The only thing I can think of is using a friends computer to support and transfer the hd.  Unfortunately for me, most of my tech smart friends have macs.  Ideas?

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
One thing you can do is to buy an enclosure, put your hard disk into it and connect the enclosure to your MacBook Pro by USB, so you will get access to the hard disk and you will be able to recover the data you want. Just open Finder and select the hard disk in the Finder sidebar, under "Devices".
You can find enclosures for the hard drive in OWC > http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/hard-drives/External-Enclosures/

  • How to export address book from ibook g4 to iMac Intel?

Hi, can anyone advise what I need to do to export the contacts in the address book of an ibook g4 running OS 10.4.11 to a new iMac 3.2 GHz Intel iCore 3 running OS 10.6.7? Thank you for your help.

Hi - on the iBook launch Address Book, click on one of your contacts and then click Command+A to select all contacts. In the Address Book File menu select Export>vCards and save them to disk. If the two Macs are on the same network just copy them across to the iMac, launch Address Book on the iMac and go to File>Import and import the vCards file you copied over. If the Macs aren't on a network copy the vCards file across on a USB stick or email them to yourself.

  • How do I restore notes from icloud backup to imac?

Somehow my "notes" folder and all contents disappeared from my Mail app on my imac, but the current version is on my iphone and icloud (notes on iphone set to sync to cloud). An older version (15 days old) is also in TimeMachine, but I'd much rather restore from the current notes in icloud.
How do I restore my current notes folder from icloud (or iphone) to my imac?
I don't seem to find the instructions in any other post. BTW, searching for words from the notes in spotlight showed no results on my imac, and it is not in the trash.
Thank you for any suggestions that could work.

I believe in Notes it has an indication what will be shown, in the upper left corner of the app see if there is a spot where you can indicate on Mac, iCloud, etc...I apologize, I'm not on my Mac at the moment and I'm writing from memory. Most of the iCloud based apps (Calendar, Contacts, etc...) have this setting in the upper left of the app.

  • Restoring from Lacie backup

BACKGROUND: I'm having some issues with my G5 and I'm going to be taking it in for service. Due to the nature of the service it will probably be in the shop for a bit so I want to move all my data to a MAC Mini that I just picked up.
I'm mainly concerned about moving all my Entorage data, Quicken Data, iTunes, and document files.
    More Info:
The MAC Mini has a fresh install of Tiger which is also running on my G5. From some other posts I've read it seemed like I could just copy my /home directory over to the new MAC Mini and that will do the trick.
    Is that correct?
G5   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   PC Tech w/MAC at home.

Thanks, I wasn't thinking that this would have my apps installed also. I figured I would have to re-install them.
Being a PC Tech, I can take an old HD and copy the whole C:\Documents & Settings directory to the new system and just re-install the apps and it would work. I wanted to see if the same was true to OSX.
