Migrating from Mac G4 733 to imac 24"

I've just ordered a new Imac 24".
What's the best way to migrate my apps,files etc?
I do not want to migrate everything i have on my G4...is there any way of choosing what i want to migrate to the new imac 24"?
And how do i do it?

Here's an updated version with some corrections:
A Basic Guide for Migrating to Intel-Macs
If you are migrating a PowerPC system (G3, G4, or G5) to an Intel-Mac be careful what you migrate. Keep in mind that some items that may get transferred will not work on Intel machines and may end up causing your computer's operating system to malfunction.
Rosetta supports "software that runs on the PowerPC G3 or G4 processor that are built for Mac OS X". This excludes the items that are not universal binaries or simply will not work in Rosetta:
Classic Environment, and subsequently any Mac OS 9 or earlier applications
Screensavers written for the PowerPC
System Preference add-ons
All Unsanity Haxies
Browser and other plug-ins
Contextual Menu Items
Applications which specifically require the PowerPC G5
Kernel extensions
Java applications with JNI (PowerPC) libraries

In addition to the above you could also have problems with migrated cache files and/or cache files containing code that is incompatible.
If you migrate a user folder that contains any of these items, you may find that your Intel-Mac is malfunctioning. It would be wise to take care when migrating your systems from a PowerPC platform to an Intel-Mac platform to assure that you do not migrate these incompatible items.
If you have problems with applications not working, then completely uninstall said application and reinstall it from scratch. Take great care with Java applications and Java-based Peer-to-Peer applications. Many Java apps will not work on Intel-Macs as they are currently compiled. As of this time Limewire, Cabos, and Acquisition are available as universal binaries. Do not install browser plug-ins such as Flash or Shockwave from downloaded installers unless they are universal binaries. The version of OS X installed on your Intel-Mac comes with special compatible versions of Flash and Shockwave plug-ins for use with your browser.
The same problem will exist for any hardware drivers such as mouse software unless the drivers have been compiled as universal binaries. For third-party mice the current choices are USB Overdrive or SteerMouse. Contact the developer or manufacturer of your third-party mouse software to find out when a universal binary version will be available.
Also be careful with some backup utilities and third-party disk repair utilities. Disk Warrior (does not work), TechTool Pro (pre-4.5.1 versions do not work), SuperDuper (newest release works), and Drive Genius (untested) may not work properly on Intel-Macs. The same caution may apply to the many "maintenance" utilities that have not yet been converted to universal binaries.

• You can use an application like Log Me In to access your home computer from your laptop.
• You can use DropBox. Install it on both computers, place your data file in a folder on the iMac, access it and work on it on your laptop and it will be automatically updated on your computer at home, even if it is not turned on, as soon as it is connected to the internet.

I've Just migrated my mac to a new iMac and CS5 is dead, I can't uninstall it or do anything with it. When I try to load an application it just crashes (I'm guessing because it needs registering on my new machine) and I can't uninstall it.
I've been using CS5 for the past three years, and contemplating getting Creative Cloud. The problem is, it looks like I didn't every properly register CS5 with my Adobe ID, the software package was a download from a thrid party seller, and the email account the sent all the registration info to is no longer in use. . .
When I try to use Application Manager to uninstall it just tells me I need application manager and gives me a link to Adobe's website to download it. I download it, install it, try again, same result, tells me I need to download it. . .
Frustrating.
Any help greatly appreciated, I'm currently completely stuck!

You can't. When you migrate user accounts, those settings will be used. That's the point of migrating, not to have to reset things Peruse Pondini's Setup New Mac guide for details.
If you want to revert to the original user settings, create an new admin user account. That'll use the default user setup.

HT4889 Trying to migrate from Mac-mini Tiger to Mac-mini Lion and Migration Assistant cannot find my Firewire, 400 to 800, "T" disk although it show up in the new Mac's computer folder. Help

Trying to migrate from Mac-mini Tiger to Mac-mini Lion and Migration Assistant cannot find my Firewire, 400 to 800, "T" disk although it shows up in the new Mac's computer folder. It seems that Mac-mini Tiger is as it should be and the firewire cable is OK. Something about the Migration Assistant is being missed, but I have no idea what it is.

Addendum: I read on a post here (http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=420169) about removing some kext files in order to trick OSX into thinking that there were no FireWire ports.
I followed the instructions and removed from /System/Library/Extensions/ the following files:
IOFireWireSerialBusProtocolTransport.kext
IOFireWireAVC.kext
IOFireWireFamily.kext
IOFireWireIP.kext
IOFireWireSBP2.kext
I restarted and BAM...Snow Leopard booted crazy fast and the mouse and keyboard worked instantly.
The System Profiler says "No FireWire ports were found."
So this tells me that the FW port is probably the culprit and is messing up the installation.
So how do I hack the Mountain Lion installer and tell it to ignore the FW port, which is obviously quite dead? Or is there something I can do to the Base system that is similar?

My new iMac is not shipping with Lion installed. Will I be able to do a Migration from my PC to my iMac without installing Lion first?

I'd be VERY surprised if your machine was not shipping with Lion installed. However even if it doesn't when you initally install Lion it will launch into Setup Assistant, if you follow the prompts it will ask if you are migrating from another machine. You can use Pondini's Lion Setup Assistant tips for help, look for the section(s) on MS Windows migration. Also I would strongly recommend bookmarking and studying the following sites:

In closing remember you have 90 days of free telephone support with AppleCare. If you run into trouble they will be happy to assist or if you have an Apple Store in your area you can book an appointment with a Genius and they can usually help you out.

Migration from G5 to new i5 iMac

I've been using a G5 iMac with Tiger, then Leopard, for the past 6 years. I've now bought an i5 iMac to get Snow Leopard before the last chance to do so vanishes. I have some questions about migration of all my data.
Question 1.
Is it better to connect Time Machine and allow Migration Assistant to do it, or connect the G5 in Target Disk Mode and do it myself?
Question 2.
Is this the correct sequence?
a) migrate the Users folder over
b) migrate the top level Library folder over
c) migrate the Applications folder (but see below)
Question 3.
Will the Preferences and Application Support files in my Users folder still be valid with Snow Leopard on an Intel Mac? Or is this not something to worry about?
Question 4.
I assume I should not simply copy the entire Applications folder over? Otherwise I will overwrite all the Apple apps (iTunes, Safari, iLife etc) with their older counterparts which I've been using up to now. Is there a quick way to exclude Apple apps when I copy the Applications across, or is it a slow and painstaking process of copying apps over one at a time?
Question 5.
If I want to keep iTunes 9, do I download it from Apple before I ever launch it for the first time, and then it will safely overwrite iTunes 10?
Question 6.
If Snow Leopard is pre-loaded on the new iMac, can I assume Rosetta is too? If it isn't, do I have to completely reinstall the OS again, or do a Custom install and just select Rosetta? Or can I download Rosetta instead if it's not there? Is there a way to know if Rosetta is there BEFORE I start migrating data?
Question 7.
There's an option to upgrade free to Lion with the new machine, within 30 days. Can I create a new small partition for it and download it there, or will downloading Lion result in upgrading SL on the main partition (which I DON'T want to happen!)?

Wow! That's some pretty involved procedure
I'm not sure why you say that. There are indeed complicated procedures that have been used for this, but when I said "see my posts in this thread" what I was referring to was my second post there, which contained the following:

Unlike most other current Mac models, the current iMac that now ships with Lion is probably still the same "Mid 2011" hardware version that had originally shipped with Snow Leopard v OS X 10.6.6 back in May, and such an iMac could probably still run Snow Leopard OS X 10.6.6 - 10.6.8, either from an external drive or a from a separate internal drive partition.
However the newest Snow Leopard retail DVD is version 10.6.3, and that is too old to run on a "Mid 2011" Mac. And since you can't run that retail DVD from the new iMac, you can't install Snow Leopard in the usual fashion of starting with v. 10.6.3 and then using Software Update to get to 10.6.8. You need to "somehow" go directly to version 10.6.6 or 10.6.8.
There are several approaches to this. The first is just to make a Genius appointment at a local Apple store and request that they directly install Snow Leopard 10.6.8 for you using their image tools. They are not obligated to do this, but a number of people have reported success this way.
A second way is to use a second, older Mac and the retail Snow Leopard DVD to first install OS X 10.6.3 on an external drive, update that volume to OS X 10.6.8 via the 10.6.8 combo update while still running from the older Mac, and then finally connect that external volume to the new Mac and try to boot from it. If all is well, you could eventually clone the 10.6.8 installation on the external volume onto the second partition on the internal drive.
A third way might be to try to obtain a replacement set of the grey-labled machine-specific 10.6.6 install discs that had originally shipped with your iMac model in the spring of 2011, just before Lion came out. I've seen reports of Apple sending out such DVDs on request, or you could look on Ebay.

It certainly may be that none of these methods would work out, but the 1st and 3rd suggestions just involve contacting Apple, and the 2nd suggestion would not really be difficult provided you had temporary access to an older Intel Mac.

Migrating from old G5 to new iMac

At work, as a graphic designer, I use a 5 year old G5 on OS 10.5.8. I am about to upgrade to a brand new iMac and was wondering what the best way would be to go about transferring files/software from the G5 to the iMac.
I have been advised to use Migration Assistant but have no experience of using this software whatsoever, so would appreciate any advice or tips.
At the moment the G5 has a number of accounts set up on it. One is mine, the other is an old account belonging to the last designer I replaced, and one is an account set up by our IT department even though they never use the mac. Ideally I'd like to just have one account for the iMac to stop any confusion or problems (when I replaced the old designer my new account was set up for me by the IT dept and I've had non-stop problems with file permissions/authentification etc ever since).
Will MA get rid of the permission problems I've been having? Do I need to transfer all accounts?
Does MA transfer settings and password info, or will this need to be recorded and re-entered manually?
Would I be better off just transferring everything manually?
If anyone can help it would be much appreciated!

Remove the unwanted accounts from System Preferences > Accounts. Unlock the prefs by clicking the lock at the bottom and authenticating with your admin password. Select the account to delete and click the minus sign at the bottom of the window. You may be asked if you want to preserve the data or completely delete; choose the complete deletion. Do that for both surplus accounts.
BTW, you can only do this if you're logged in as admin user yourself.
When you're happy that you've got rid of all the extraneous stuff, don't use MA. On first boot of the new Mac you'll be offered the option to transfer files from another source (this is Setup Assistant). Connect the two by firewire and choose 'from another Mac'. Continue with the initial setup as prompted.
Note that transferring all your stuff may take quite a long time (hours).
Using Setup Assistant at first boot ensures you get one account with all the correct permissions.
Using Migration Assistant after creating an account can lead to serious permissions problems, duplicated data and other problems.

If you try to open message viewer window then mail program crashes. Would really like to get my old emails back as the old imac is totally dead. Thanks for any help.

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Step 1
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left.
Enter the name of the crashed application or process in the Filter text field. Post the messages from the time of the last crash, if any — the text, please, not a screenshot.
When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into a message.
Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Edit it out by search-and-replace in a text editor before posting.
Step 2
Still in the Console window, look under User Diagnostic Reports for crash reports related to the process. The report name starts with the name of the crashed process, and ends with ".crash". Select the most recent report and post the entire contents — again, the text, not a screenshot. In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.) Please don’t post shutdownStall, spin, or hang logs — they're very long and not helpful.

Open Directory Migration from Mac OSX Server 10.4 to 10.8?

Hi All,
This might be a silly question and apologise in advanced if this is?
We are running on old Xserve (10.4.8) with approx. 100 Mac clients and would like to know if it's possible to migrate from OD 10.4 to OD 10.8. We tried just to see what would happen if we archived the old OD and re-imported in to 10.8, but as we guessed this didn’t work. I’ve looked through this forum and seems most are doing this from 10.5, so wondering if we need to upgrade to 10.5 and then up to 10.8?
Any pointers would be great.

If you don't mind clearing ser passwords, then I would export users from 10.4 and import into 10.8
There are some issues with service ACLs in doing this, but its still the fastest process.
If users are allowed to set their own PW, the you give provide preset pw's (either unique or common) and a URL to allow users to reset their PW.
If you need to retain passwords, what I would do is clone the 10.4 server, then upgrade it all the way to 10.8 then archive OD from that and import into a clean-install of 10.8 server.
Whataver you do, don't rely on a 10.4 to 10.8 migration, you'll want a clean 10.8 install.
The offline 10.4 -> 10.8 would allow you to retain PWs, but it creates alot of extra work for you.

HT4484 Migrating from @mac to @me with Apple ID/primary email

I'm not sure if anyone else has come across this, but i have had an apple email address back from when @mac was the thing which then got replaced with mobileme (@me), so I think switched all my friends to my new @me account, but as I set my Apple ID and primary address to be my @mac address like 10 years ago the Apple ID service won't allow you to modify this setting and go with the new domain. I can login using either but when I login to iCloud to check my personal email from away from my iMac it goes with whatever has been set with the primary account in iCloud. So now my friends get emails from me at home from @me and from icloud from @mac.
Should i forget the @me deal and just go back to my @mac account to get rid of the dupe email addresses and confusion i'm causing all of my friends?
MobileMe tech support had no solution other than to contact iCloud tech support. iCloud techsupport is only for the service related on specific hardware so nothing is related or i'd have to pay to talk to someone who probably can't do anything.
Apple, it is stupid you can't change your apple ID or primary email address when you're using an apple domain. I know you can do it as you show it in the support document (http://support.apple.com/kb/HE40), but it's not there for me.

You can remove it as your rescue email address by logging into the account via the 'manage your apple id' button on http://appleid.apple.com, selecting the Password & Security section of your account, and answering your security questions : Manage your Apple ID primary, rescue, alternate, and notification email addresses - Apple Support
You can then try putting it as your primary email address (you may need to log out after doing the above and log back in), and putting what is currently your primary email address as your rescue email address.

I have been using "connect to server" to connect my network shares, and when i try to reconnect them using this, it just keeps trying to connect, and wont ever connect even after leaving it to try for over 4 hours (connecting when first starting is fine, taking less than a minute).

Okay, you definitely have a network connectivity problem. OS X Server is not supposed to behave that way. What kind of network infrastructure do you have? What make/model routers, switches, hubs, whatever? WIred/wireless? What class cabling or if wireless, what class wireless?
is there a way to restart smb service on the macbook, or even fix it, so that it doesnt have to always be reconnected?
Yes. Usually you just disconnect and reconnect at will.
