Migrating from my old Powerbook to a new MBPro

I bought a brand new Macbook Pro 2.33 a few months back. I have been using my Powerbook G4 meanwhile as I wait for a few Universal Binary updates for apps I have. I do audio recording and it will be aq pleasure to test drive the dual 2.33. When i first got the MBP I just copied my whole hard drive from one to the other and found out this was not a smart move since I have apps on the old PB that are not Universal Binary. In September my sequencer program will have an update so i will be able to use oler audio plug ins on the MBP so till then I just want to make sure of something.
I did an erase and install of the restore software that came with the MBP, I will download any software updates. Is there a list of apps that are Universal Binary like Firefox? Don't want to slow the MBP down.
any help?
rd

Don't worry about Rosetta slowing your MBP down running non-UB apps. The only slowdown you may notice is from the non-UB app itself--like non-UB Photoshop, for example. I still have a couple of non-UB apps running on mine at all times.
Use that MacBook Pro!

Yes. You are only Copying the Data not moving it.

Don't migrate wirelessly unless you have a very fast wireless connection. Anything other than 5 GHz 802.11n is likely to take an unacceptable amount of time.

what method are you using? Firewire, ethernet, wireless?  I'm assuming you are doing this via Migration Assistant.  You can't speed it up if it is in process, but you can use a faster method if available to you.  http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4413

  • Need to move Mailboxes from an old Powerbook to a new desktop iMac G5.

I already asked on some discussion group but somehow lost it and have to re enter my question.
I have an old Powerbook G4 that I had to use for a few months but now have my new iMac G5 desktop Intel Core and need to copy all the Mail in mailboxes onto a flash drive so I can then have it as an archive backup but also be able to copy it to the new computer.  Thanks for any advice given.

    Your reply is appreciated.
iMac (21.5-inch, Mid 2014) Processor 1.4 GHz Intel Core i5  Memory 8 GB 1600 MHz DDR3 is what I have.

         Processor Name:                Intel Core i5

Yup, you're right.  Among the mound of literature I have, says there was a G5 in 2005
Nevertheless, it would be helpful to be able to copy the Inbox from the antique PowerBook G4 to the flash drive.

What's the best way to migrate from a 2010 iMac running Yosemite to a new 2014 iMac?

    Hello jonfromnorth caldwell,
The article linked below details how to utilize target disk mode to transfer files. This can also be used in conjuction with Migration assistant to transfer your information quickly (the 2010 iMac will appear as a storage device to the new iMac).

Could I not just put them on a USB stick and connect that ?
You can use a USB flash drive & the camera connection kit.
Plug the USB flash drive into your computer & create a new folder titled DCIM. Then put your movie/photo files into the folder. The files must have a filename with exactly 8 characters long (no spaces) plus the file extension (i.e., my-movie.mov; DSCN0164.jpg).
Now plug the flash drive into the iPad using the camera connection kit. Open the Photos app, the movie/photo files should appear & you can import. (You can not export using the camera connection kit.)

  • I am migrating from an old computer to a new one.  Is there a way to move PSCC with all my actions and preferences without having to redo them one at a time?  Can it all be uploaded into the cloud and then redownloaded and, if so, how?  Thank you.

All my image files are on externals, so my only folder to move regarding this would be Photoshop and Lightroom.

You need to install Photoshop on your new machine.  Once installed you can sync you new installation with your old cc install.  If your assets and Photoshop add-ons are on the external drive your done if you link them into you Photoshop paths.  I prefer to copy my Photoshop add-on like Plug-ins and Scripts to  the boot disk and link then in there. Adobe removed additional plug-in folder from preferences and never had an additional script folder support.  Using Files system links work just fine.  I have CS2, CS6, CC and CC 2014,  They all share the same Plug-ins and Scripts.  Some do not work in CS2 because they user new features not in CS2.

  • What's the best way to migrate from an old ipad to a new ipad?

Well, it's more than that. I gave my husband a new ipad for his birthday. He needs to set up the new ipad and can't figure out the best way to do it. Any advice to minimize frustration and lost apps?
Then I want to zero out his old ipad and claim it as my own. Any advice on the best way to do that?
    thanks in advance.

Two major ways for hubby to get going with the new iPad.
    1.  Do a full backup of the current iPad, then "restore" the new iPad from the backup.
    2.  Do a complete new setup on the new iPad, and download all the apps again from your app store purchases.
Each approach has advantages and disadvantages.  #1 is faster and less burdensome, but if there are any quirks with programs or data that may have caused problems on the old iPad, you will carry them over to the new iPad.  #2 is the cleanest way for a new machine, but you may lose some data.
In either case, once he is comfortable with the new iPad and it is acting as it should, you can wipe the old iPad by going to Reset and wiping the machine to restore factory specs.  Following that, you can set it up fresh for your own use.

  • How do I move my QT Pro from my old Powerbook to my new MBP?

I am replacing my PB with a MBP. How do I move/load my paid QT Pro from the PB to MBP?
    Thanks, 0-0bill

You can just type your registration code in the Quicktime preferences of your new MBP. The installed Quicktime Player application holds all the pro functions. It just needs to be unlocked.
To find your registration code open system preferences, click on quicktime and then click on the register tab
I think that you should then disable the Quicktime Pro function on your old computer as the licence is for one machine at a time.

  • I just started migrating from my old iMac to my new one, both intel based. I am using my wireless system for this. I don't have many files, photos, etc, yet it says it's going to take 11 hours. Is this normal?

I am using the migration assistant over a cable modem wifi network. I don't have many files or photos, yet it is saying 11 hours remaining. Is this the norm, and how can I speed this up. Thanks

A FireWire connection would be much faster than your network connection.

  • I'm trying to migrate data from an old Powerbook G4 to a Macbook running 10.8 - new laptop can't find the target disk

Can anyone help me get a new(er) Macbook that's running Mountain Lion migrate data from an old PowerBook G4 running 10.4.x?
I've restarted the G4 holding down "T" and have the Firewire icon floating around its screen, started Migration Assistant on the Macbook, telling it to get data from a Time Machine back up or other disk, have Firewire cable connected to both laptops, continue and the Macbook is just endlessly "Looking for Other Computers"....
    Any ideas?
    Anyone?

Additionally, When I have the two laptops connected via Firewire, I do see the disk from which I'm trying to migrate data and can copy files, etc.
Not sure if this is helpful or not but thought I'd throw it out there.

how do I transfer my contacts from my old Powerbook G4 to my new one Macbook Pro?
new Macbook Pro is operating on OSX 10.8.2
When I save it as an export then try to open it on the new computer it wants me to delete all my current contacts before it will import.
    What happened to MERGING?

On the PowerBook G4, open Address Book and choose File > Back up Address Book...
Save it to your Desktop or directly to the MBP if it is already connected. Otherwise copy the Address Book backup file to the MacBook Pro. Email is also an option.
On the MacBook Pro, open (double-click) the Address Book Backup (abbu) file:
Contacts will launch and display the following:
Click Replace All which will do what it says.

How can I migrate data from an old MBA to a new one without having access to the screen of the old one? The screen of the old MBA is damaged !

If your "older" MBA has a Thunderbolt port then it isn't that old. See Target Disk Mode about how it's used. Note that without a monitor you won't be able to tell from the screen when it has fully started, and if it succeeded in starting in TDM. If it did, then the hard drive should appear on the Desktop of your new computer. You can then access it to transfer your files. You can even use Migration Assistant or any backup utility to transfer data. Just don't try to transfer system files.
