Interesting thing happened during transfer of files:
Don't have a firewire cable so I just connected with ethernet. Began dragging files, and itunes library to new comp.
However, next day, found that the imac had automatically transferred bookmarks, email, addresses and itunes by itself!
Would've been great if expected.. Unfortunately, it duplicated all the songs in itunes.
-How did that happen?
-And how can I easily purge out the duplicate itunes files?

All new Macs sold include the Migration Assistant, which can transfer over most of your data from an older Mac to a newer Mac. If the fonts aren't transferred over automatically, you can put either machine in FireWire Target Disk mode by holding down the T key at startup, and then drag them to the folder /Library/Fonts/ on the PowerBook's hard disk to migrate them.

Migrating from older macs to a new powerbook G4

I've got one of the new powerbooks ordered and on the way, and I'm very excited about it -- improved resolution, all that screen space, tons of RAM, 1.67 mghz -- YAHOO.
But I'm also dreading the moving part. Right now I've got a desktop G4 desktop imac and a G4 ibook as well. I'll be selling both of these, after everything has been transferred off of them onto the new machine.
Does anybody know of a to-do list for this kind of migration? Fonts, keychains, preferences, not to mention applications and documents... I'm worried I'm going to do something in the wrong order or forget something.
Any hints or links much appreciated.

How migrate from older time machine backup (not the latest)?

My old Snow Leopard Mac had a dying hard drive. In the last few days, files were disappearing left and right.
I bought a new Lion Mac, but I don't trust the Time Machine backup for the last few days and I would like to migrate the backup from just before the problems started.
I can't figure out any way to do this. Migration Assistant only offers to import the latest backup
And the full Time Machine Restore feature, which DOES allow you to pick a backup, only works on the original machine, which will not boot any more.
Can I somehow trick Migration Assistant by deleting the last few backups from the Time Machine drive and renaming the one I want to use to Latest? (I've made a copy of the entire Time Machine folder just in case...)
Any other way to do this? I'm sure many people are in this situation.

I have this same question. My hard drive died, and the last few Time Machine backups appear to be incomplete or corrupted. New hard drive installed now. Migration Assistant and Setup Assistant first refuse to even recognize my backup drive, then insist on migrating data from the newest backup instead of an older (but definitely complete and reliable) backup. So I haven't migrated anything and am still using my old (OS 10.4) computer until i get this straightened out. Ideas?

Help - new iMac 5k not displaying retina resolution after migration from older iMac?

I have just recently purchased and started up a new iMac 27" 5K iMac. Upon startup I took a look at the display settings to play with the different options for optimizing screen real estate. I noticed that the default setting for the new iMac is labeled as "default retina" and when you mouse over this setting a line appears that says "looks like 5120 x 2880".
An hour later I migrated my files and settings over from my previous iMac (27" late 2012) but noticed that when I go into display preferences it no longer has exactly the same options. Now the default setting is simply listed as "default" (not "default retina" as before the migration) and the line that appears states "looks like 2560 x 1440", which was the resolution of the older iMac.
I am unable to figure out how to revert back to the retina display options.
Has this happened to anyone else? Your help is much appreciated.

I have Logic Studio 9.0 media set but need to install onto new Mountain Lion iMac. Migrating from older OS will allow free upgrade from App store but I don't want to migrate due to other issues. How can I install this?

We have a valid serial number and the original 9.0 media set. When I tried migrating the App Store updated it free of charge. However I don't know how to get Logic on without migrating as it point blank refuses when I insert the install disk.

Something is not quite right here:
I have the original Studio 2 disks here, and the installer runs fine under OSX.8.3. It will install Logic Pro 9.0.0, which can then be updated by downloading the 9.1.7 or 9.1.8 updater from Apple Downloads.
On your system, the installer refuses to run, or does the install proceed, but you are unable to update Logic so that it will work on Mountain Lion?

Migration from older mac to new

I have an iMac running 10.6.8. I just purchased a new iMac with Yosemite installed. I am trying to migrate my files from my old mac. On the new mac I am getting a yellow triangle ! that says my old mac is not running the newest version of OS X , and I need to upgrade to continue to migrate. I just upgraded to 10.6.8 which I was told by the apple "chat" line would take care of this.

Connect the old machine's Time Machine backup or bootable clone backup (via USB) to the new machine. Launch Migration Assistant, select the backup drive and off you go. Extremely simple to do.

Migrating from older iMac to new 24"

In two days I'll be receiving my new 3.6 GHz, 24" iMac...and needless to say...I'm excited! I only briefly and occasionally have seen reference to migration. Should I go ahead and use the migration assistant? And if I use that utility, can you pick and choose what you want to migrate...or does just everything cross over?

Migrating from older osx to mavericks

Hello,
my old MBP died and I am trying to use the migration assistant to copy over my old user data from my hdd to the new mbp.
There is over 400GB of data that it detects, it shows a message 'this user needs attention...' and no matter what I select when the migration process finishes there is no data there.
Now when I also browse the hdd via firewire there is also no data showing - could this be related to filevault? Am I missing something? The cerainoly was data there, but I cannot startup my old mb at all.

Just as an addition the user folder is 463GB but my old user account has zero - nada - nothing.....

Connection to use for migration from older intel iMac to newest iMac (2013)

I have a new iMac on order and since it does not have firewire ports I am wondering what to use for content migration connection from the old (20 inch iMac) to the new one.
Is my only opion a USB cable?

I chose Setup Assistant because of advice I was given here, actually. Both Setup Assistant and Migration Assistant work well, but I didn't want any hassles than can ensue with Migration Assistant if you enter a username during the initial setup process that's the same name as what you'll be bringing over with Migration Assistant.
Using Setup Assistant all of my preferences seemed to make the move just fine. I had to arrange Apple Mail the way I had it before, but that was quick and easy. Even my Dock, which I had on the left side of my screen, appeared in the same location on my new iMac.

Some details about versions i'm using:
old toplink.jar: in manifest.mf it says: Implementation-Version: 10.1.3.0
my mwp project says: <version>9.0.3.4</version>
to the new toplink.jar who's manifest.mf says: Implementation-Version: 11.1.1.2.0.091016
I'm following the documentation at: http://www.oracle.com/technology/products/ias/toplink/doc/11110/migration/toplink-migrate.html
it is saying: "To continue using the deprecated toplink.jar classes, no migration is required."
So I just replaced my old toplink.jar with the new toplink.jar
and as I'm using jboss I replaces in my sessions.xml and update it to be:
<external-transaction-controller-class>oracle.toplink.transaction.jboss.JBossTransactionController</external-transaction-controller-class>
However then when my toplink code runs I get this kind of exception:

Migrating from older Flash Pro versions causes Auto Formatting to malfunction

I have recently upgraded my Flash CS4 to Flash CS5 on my MAC, and Flash CS5 to Flash CS5.5 on my PC, these upgrades are causing the Flash Auto Formatting feature to malfunction, it somehow becomes a tool that breaks my code and causes errors while exporting, instead of simply re-arranging the lines.
This is happening with all my codes and all my projects, not a specific line of code.
Anybody has a clue how to fix this? Is there some sort of an Adobe update for this?

Nope it is just badluck, i just answered this on another thread but google it im sure there is a way to fix this, i am sure of it.
but next time FINISH your projects before moving computers or flash versions because you might encounter this.
I have no problems with changing versions but changing computers OS is pretty understandable to cause errors.

Having trouble migrating from macbook Pro to macbook Air?

Apple has kind of messed up with migration from older laptops to Macbook Air. With 140 GB to transfer onto my new Macbook Air, I took a big gulp when my new Air told me casually that it would take about 36 hours to migrate my stuff from my Pro to the new Air over the wireless network. OK, so I have a slow network, sue me. Apple's technical help was no help, and that's getting pretty common. The solution? A data transfer USB cable (PCMACLINK2 USB to USB Data Transfer Cable for Windows and Mac, Startech). A simple USB-USB connection and data transfer rates of around 480 MBS. I think we are good to go. BTW, why didn't Apple release a Firewire/Thunderbolt dongle? Making a new set of dongles for every new Mac seems to be de rigeur these days, so why not add one more? Oh, and Apple doesn't seem to carry a data transfer cable. FAIL!

I've been pondering getting a Macbook Air but I want to find out if I can copy over Endnote X4 and Office from my Macbook Pro (Snow Leopard) to a new Macbook Air (Lion).
Is it just a matter of drag and drop or using Migrate Assistant or is there anything to worry about between different Macbooks, different versions of OS or some restriction on copying Apps?
Also, assuming a migration is possible, can I just use my Timemachine external drive or should I buy a cable instead?

Possible cause for Faces failures (migration from an older version)

I've had no luck with Faces recognizing faces in images.
I think that the issue is with how the images got to iPhoto.
I imported 2000+ images from my iBook (iPhoto 04). Of those, Faces failed in ~>95% of the images. Today, I took two junky photos with Photobooth, including a dark and distant shot. Faces recognized that there was a face in the image, although it hadn't learned the face, yet (I know, that takes time).
I believe the issue might have to do with the fact that I imported images from a distant version (i.e. coming from iPhoto 4 instead of iPhoto 07 or 08, or whatever).
Or, possibly that I migrated from another machine as opposed to upgrading iPhoto on the same machine?
Hopefully this line of reasoning will isolate the problem's cause.
Please reply if you are having success or not, as well how your photos got into iPhoto '09 (i.e. Migration from another computer and type, prior iPhoto version, etc.)

I just imported (from my Treo) three images that were exactly the same as the three successes from Photobooth.
Being from different sources they cannot be the same. Maybe the face in the photo was the same but the rest of the file, i.e. the metadata is different. Some image sources write metadata differently and that can cause issue. It's probable that iPhoto is expecting the metadata to adhere strictly to the EXIF/ITPC standards and some of the sources don't in writing the metadata to the file.
Report the problem to iPhoto via http://www.apple.com/feedback/iphoto.html and give the details of the photos as you've done here. That will help them better understand the issue and get a fix out.

Migration to ECC 6.0 from Older versions

We want to migrate from two versions namely 3.1i and 4.6c (both of them in separate instances) to a unified ECC 6.0 in a different server.
Scenario 1: We are not planning any new functionalities but just to replicate the old functionalities as well as Old org structure in ECC 6.0.
Scenario 2: Alternatively assuming we have two Op Concerns and 3 Controlling areas in both the versions. We merge the Op Concern into one and have 2 or 1 Controlling area(s) in ECC 6.0, what could be the potential issues.
What is the best practice and what could be the potential issues, especially this migration happens in the middle of the fiscal year.
Any inputs in this regard will be highly appreciated.
