Migrating from WebOS to iOS

Hi All,
I currently have a HP Pre 3 running WebOS which unfortunately has been pretty much killed on mobiles by Palm/Hp/LG. While I love WebOS my phones beginning to turn in to an OAP and needs replacing, further with my friends starting to use WhatsApp to arrange birthdays etc (just as an example) the lack of apps is finally starting to annoy me.
I'm thinking of switching to an iPhone 5S and iOS7 but have a few questions before I make the switch:
1) Currently all my contacts, calendar appointments etc are stored in the cloud (Facebook and Google) allowing me to add a calendar appointment/contact to my google account via a web browser and it will automatically be on my phone. Also if I have the same contact in Google as I do in Facebook I can easily link them as the same person on my phone so that the contact details show up under that person. Also if I ever lose my phone I just grab another WebOS phone, enter my FB, Google and Palm account details and I'm back to normal. For example on cloud contacts:
FB: Frederick Blogs, tel 01234 123123, email: [email protected]
Google: Fred Blogs, mobile: 07123 123123, work: 07123 456456
Phone: Frederick Blogs, tel 01234 123123, mobile: 07123 123123, work: 07123 456456, email: [email protected]
Is this possible on iOS? If so is there anything that works better or worse than the above, anything I should be aware of?
2) I can do without a physical keyboard, but currently to make a call to a friend on speed dial I can flip open the  keyboard and hold the corresponding key (say F for Fred above), in the iPhone user guide I can see on page 43 a comment saying "With Favorites, you can make a call with a single tap" but it doesn't say how! Could someone please describe the steps required to call a favourite (without using Siri, that's fairly obvious)?
3) Multitasking, It's actually the card metaphor for apps in iOS7 that has made me think about switching. I had a play with someones iPhone last night and the iOS implementation has actually dissapointed me a bit. My main use for this is when writing e-mails and I need references for that e-mail, I may set my apps up so that I have a calculator, the e-mail in the middle and then a web page on the right so I can switch between the references and the e-mail quickly. On my work iPad I can set the apps up like the above with a little effort (although why can't you drag to reorganise the cards!) and "four finger swipe" between them, is there anyway to quick switch between apps on an iPhone as the option in the menus doesn't appear to be there?
4) "Just Type", I love this on WebOs, just flick the keyboard open and type whatever you want to do. This may be similar to the search screen on the far left of the apps pages in iOS? I haven't tried it but what can you do on that screen? For example, can I search contacts? Enter a URL to open in Safari? Search for an application? Enter a google search string? A twitter post?
5) iTunes. I run Linux so iTunes isn't available, can I copy music etc to my iPhone without iTunes? I'm guessing the iPhone isn't a simple plug in via a usb cable and it acts like a flash drive? (My old iPod didn't anyway). That's probably a question for a Linux forum though.
Sorry for the long post but thank you for answering.
Haydn.

Regarding question 1 I've found that you can sync with google and facebook and also link contacts together using this process: http://howto.cnet.com/8301-11310_39-57577028-285/how-to-merge-duplicate-contacts -in-ios-6/
Is it possible to automatically link contacts from different sources who have the same name? Considering pretty much all of my firends have details on both google and facebook I wouldn't want to follow this linking process for every contact. I think I only have 2 friends who have the same first & last name so it's quicker to unlink those 2 contacts rather than link the other 500 odd.

  • How to add photos taken in iOS 8 to albums migrated from iPhoto

Does anyone know how to add photos taken in iOS 8 to albums migrated from iPhoto, or do I have to set up another set of albums?

Albums that you synced from a computer can't be amended in the Photos app, the only way to add (or remove) photos to those albums is to do it on your Mac and resync.

  • Migrating from Sup2GE to Sup720 Native IOS

    We are planning to migrate a 6509 chassis from a single Sup2GE & SFM to a Sup720-3B.
Can this be done without a service interruption? If so, what is the recommended procedure for this?
If anyone has done this, I would love to hear your story.
    Thanks in advance.
    John

    John,
Definitely this asks for downtime. I hope you are familiar with the fact that there are two trains of OSes (CATOS and IOS) for the 6509 Sups. IF you are running CATOS now (hybrid) and migrate to SUP 720 which also run's hyrbid then you are OK with not having to convert Operating systems. If you want to use IOS (router like) features on the 6509 after you migrate to Sup 720, you may need to install IOS on the Sup 720. You will also need to convert your existing configs from CATOS to IOS so that your new Sup retains all the configurations that your old switch had.
I would recommend that you keep the OS same on both Sup's so that the migration goes smoother and later on if you want to conver OSes you can do it at a later time. Remember there is a lot of difference in syntax between the commands used in both OSes. Here are a few links that may help understand the diff.
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/hw/switches/ps700/products_tech_note09186a008010e9d5.shtml
If you are converting OSes you will need to refer to this link.
For conversion from CATOS to IOS

THe conversion process takes about 30 mins to an hour depending upon how familiar you are with the conversion process. Remember not to miss any step specified in the above links while conversion.I would definitely recommend, to test this procedure in lab before you are comfortable with doing this in production.
In addition to all this, here is a tool that will convert your current CATOS configs to IOS syntax.

You will need your CCO login and password.

  • I was migrating from a 3gs to the 4s. Big mistake. Have lost contacts and access to music and apps.

I was migrating from a 3gs to the 4s. Having never upgraded the IOS before, I thought that I should do that before handed the phone down to my daughter to replace her broken 3g. Big mistake. Even using Google sync for my contacts, following instruction from the Google webpage (ambiguous: cancel or not when error message is displayed?) the contacts did not sync to gmail. iTunes says it will sync contacts, but doesn't from the phone, only from the few that were in my old Gmail account. The iCloud set up asks for email and a new password- not specifying that you should use your old email and password for your old iTunes account or your phone will be instantly locked out of those apps and tunes stored there. The web info says you can't merge accounts or passwords, so, I bet I have to cancel the new set up and start over with the old password if it will even let me. I've spent 8 hrs reading, syncing, et c., on this! It will be a long time before I casually buy a new phone from them! I wonder how much time it will take to switch from the 3GS to the 4S? I now have a 3GS without contacts, no way to get the data from those files back, and can't get the apps to it or the 4S until Apple support helps fix the double identity problem.
Considering that I had verbal instructions from the Apple store prior to the IOS upgrade, reviewed all the details on line, I think this process is woefully lacking in clarity and transparency. The local ATT branch offered nothing except backing up to avoid loss of contacts if both phones were taken to the store, but not any help with the IOS or iTunes content. Cable internet for the 3GS backup and IOS 5 upgrade seemed to take about 2 hours. At least calender, notes, etc. were done correctly and 2500 picture and videos were not removed.

After the last post,I went to the local ATT for some feedback. The manager there, Stephen, was helpful and spent a long time, even after i had gotten the abbreviated list of contacts I had constructed from the 3GS to the 4S by an iTunes sync with the correct options selected. This however, would not sync notes. I took screen pix of my many stock symbols for future reference, and got them to transfer with Bump (as photos, in case I want to refresh my memory on some of the symbols added previously). I emailed myself copies of 28 notes i did not want to lose, because the iCloud back up would not initially work. After what seemed like years, I finally was able to get it working, following repeated refusal to Merge because of "not enough space available" @5GB even though everything was turned off except contacts and calendar.
My old phone is finally backed up to the cloud after I turned off location service on new phone, and a bunch of apps and photo data showed up for the first time, as icons to be turned off on the old phone in the  Manage Storage window. It said it was going to back up 8 GB of photos when the photo backup had been turned off on the prior screen. (The screws are loose, and the worm has turned on this software at Apple.)
Backup for notes, a few contacts, and calendar, over high speed wifi, took 25 minutes to complete without photos.
I have never seen anything this troublesome in the Apple OS!
You will need to set your own Apple ID and a .me email ID if you want to use the cloud. My recommendation and that of the store manager for the first time is don't back up any photos, let it erase the photo stream if it wants to. The camera roll should be ok.
Backing up to the iCloud removed all my stocks from the old phone! It wasn't supposed to. Be sure to select leave data on phone at every opportunity- even so, there they went. It did not remove contacts or calendar when backing up, though the IOS 5 upgrade had lost my years of contacts since I had not specified that they should be saved when I hit the simple sync in iTunes the first time and since Googlesync failed to connect properly for me over wifi as noted above.
All in all it appears nothing is going to clone your phone or preserve all the data through a IOS 4.x to 5 migration, though I did not do it right the first time with iTunes, and complicated matters by starting with a new ID instead of my old iTunes account and password, living in a small town, away from any Apple store, though if you can't be there at an Apple store with both phones in hand, they probably can't help much unless they walk you through each option in iTunes and you are very attentive. The store genius I saw did not do this, though I had yet to order the phone at that point.
    Good Luck!

  • HT4889 Am I wrong or does Migration Assistant not work in Mountain Lion (10.8.2) when migrating from a PowerPC running Tiger (10.4.11)? Apple really needs to get on the ball or face losing people buying their new desktop products.

The title alone speaks to my frustration about this issue.
Used the process that was recommended by Apple to migrate from my "Lampshade" iMac (PPC running 10.4.11) to the new iMac (Intel running 10.8.2) and I got bupkiss...
Just a spinning wheel (not beachball) and no drive recognized using Migration Assistant for both nor when using Target Mode on the iMac running 10.4.11 and Migration Assistant on the iMac running 10.8.2. Which is ironic, or more accurately oxymoronic, since the iMac in Target Mode (10.4.11) is recognized on the desktop of the iMac running 10.8.2 but not in the Migration Assistant. And before you can misdiagnose..it is not the Thunderbolt connection since I have the Apple recommended Thunderbolt to Firewire adapter and also used the Firewire 400 to 800 cable to expedite the transfer.
    On a personal note...
I'm not bashing Apple for this...they are "head and shoulders" above the competition in what they do but I've been burned a few times so I feel I can share a small bit of loyal customer advice...I understand your iOS and mobile products hold huge sway in company focus and market-share but I find it a tad unwise to slack on the desktop applications. I don't recall any app for the iPhone/iPad family being made on the iPhone/iPad...only from desktop applications if I recall correctly. And how can I clearly "Move my Mac even further ahead"  as your marketing states when I can't even migrate my files from my old Mac to my new one in a simple fashion as per your instructions?
I thank anyone in advance with an answer or even a workaround for this issue and please have a great day.

Migration from Mac OS X v10.4 Tiger to OS X Lion
Migration from Mac OS X v10.4 computers to OS X Lion over your Wi-Fi or a wired network is not supported. However, if both Macs are equipped with a FireWire port, you can use Target Disk Mode to transfer your data:
Verify that both Macs are equipped with a FireWire port. Note that different model Macs may have different FireWire connectors, which will require an appropriate cable, such as FireWire 400 to FireWire 800.
On the Mac you want to transfer data from, Restart, and immediately hold the T key.
Wait for the FireWire logo to appear on the screen.  If it does not, restart and try again.
Connect both Macs via the FireWire cable.
On the Mac you want to transfer data to, Open the Migration Assistant application.
Select the option "From another Mac, PC, Time Machine backup, or other disk" and click Continue.
Select the option "From a Time Machine backup or other disk" and click Continue.
Select your other Mac's volume, such as "Macintosh HD", from the list, and click Cont
EDIT: Actually I realize you did follow these directions and if your drive is seen on the new Mac it should work. You're entitled to free Apple support with the new purchase, I'd give them a call.

  • Migration from PC to Mac without losing application data (savegames etc.)

    Hello everyone,
I am migrating from from my old Windows PC onto a MacBook Pro, and I'm having difficulties with iTunes and my iOS devices (iPhone 4, iPad 1). Maybe someone here can help me out, I'd be ever so grateful.
I set up iTunes on my MBP yesterday and logged in to my account. I replaced the empty iTunes Media folder with my old one (which contains all my music, videos and applications) via an external hard drive.
First problem: it wouldn't import these files into my new library automatically. Just showed me an empty library I think I imported the entire iTunes Media folder manually yesterday via "Add to folder". The status right now (after some experimentation) is old iTunes Media folder copied, but nothing imported (that is, I have an empty library).
When I connected my iPhone and tried to synch, I first had to authorize the MacBook for the iPhone. So far, so good. However when I tried to synch iTunes warned me that if I synch, all data on the iPhone will be removed and replaced by the data from my new local library (which is, of couse a copy of my old library, but doesn't store application data like savegames).
I tried to do it via "transfer purchased items from iPhone", which took forever, but yielded the same result: a warning that all data on the iPhone would be erased.
So the question is: How do I connect my iPhone and iPad to iTunes on my new Mac without losing application data like settings and savegames? And why is this so complicated and intransparent? I should be able to just copy my media, say "authorize this Computer, then add iPhone to the registered devices" and then proceed like nothing ever changed.
I searched the net until three in the morning yesterday, but couldn't find anything that sounded safe enough to give it a try.
Thanks in advance and best Regards,
    Nate
PS: I do have the backup-folders from my old PC on a USB stick - are those going to help?

I was fighting this battle the past few days myself; but actually it is REALLY easy now. See here:
    http://www.macworld.com/article/146958/2010/03/moveitunes_windowsmac.html
Then, once iTunes was on the Mac, I did this:
    1. On the Mac rename ...\iTunes\iTunes Library.itl as ...\iTunes\iTunes Library
    2. On the Mac delete ...\iTunes\iTunes Library Genius.itdb (Apparently the PC & Mac versions are not compatible - iTunes will just rebuild it later)
    3. Launch iTunes and immediately press & hold down the Option key until a dialog opens asking you to Choose a library. Navigate to the folder/drive you've copied from the PC and open ...\iTunes\iTunes Library.
(thanks to turingtest2 for the above steps)
That was it. Did it yesterday evening. All playlists, libraries, everything copied fine. No problems; no broken links. Perfect.

  • Migrate from Palm Desktop/OS 10.4 to OS 10.6 & new iPod Touch?

I'm very dependent on Palm Desktop 4.2.2 to keep my life organized. My old Palm died long ago, but I like Palm Desktop more than any other alternatives I've seen. I've ordered a new iPod Touch. I'm pretty sure that, to use it with my iBook (running OS 10.4.11) that I'll need to upgrade to Leopard or Snow Leopard if I want to share info with the Touch.
Moreover, I think I'll need to sever any ties to my beloved Palm Desktop: I don't think it's compatible with OS 10.6. I've explored similar posts, but haven't found an answer I could use or understand. So if someone knows of an online description of migrating from Palm Desktop to either the equivalent Apple products or to Google, I'd appreciate the URL.
The main feature I like in Palm Desktop is the ability to create links between all the modules. For example, I can set an appointment with a doctor, then attach the doctor's contact information and attach a memo that has a list of questions and directions to the new office. My existing database is cross-linked between all these types of info.
Is there any way I can retain these cross links when I migrate? Do any of the Apple PIM programs let you create these kinds of cross references with new information? Does Google or some other software let you do this better?
From what I've read, it sounds like getting the information exported into a format that can be imported to a new program isn't easy. BTW, I'll also be migrating from Eudora to either Mail, Thunderbird mail, or some third party equivalent. I won't use any flavor of Outlook. Is there something about MobileMe that would make this migration easier?
Can you tell that I'm operating on the very fringe of what I'm technically able to understand? I've stuck with Palm Desktop for 8 years. I'd appreciate any guidance anyone could provide -- in an easy, step-by-step way. Forgive me if this information exists elsewhere. Directions to that info also would be appreciated.
Quickly exceeding my technological Comfort Zone,
    Marganne

The Palm Desktop works fine with 10.6.6 (and even Hotsyncs to Palm, though I gather this is irrelevant to you). However it is dependent on Rosetta, so (avoiding speculation to conform with the terms of this Forum) were Rosetta to be removed in a future system upgrade the Palm Desktop would be inoperable.
You're not going to be able to salvage the contents and use them in a linked fashion in the same way. It's possible to salvage the contents, though it's going to entail some work.
MEMOS - Evernote (basic version free) is a good replacement and extremely flexible: its contents can be synced to an iPhone or iPod Touch. The contents of the Palm Memos can be imported into Evernote using the Palm Desktop Memos Importer for Evernote (free)
CALENDARS - Palm Desktop menu File>Export and export Date Book as vCal. In iCal File>Import and import the vCal file into iCal - it will appear as an 'On My Mac' calendar. Use File>Export>Export to export this as an .ics file. Create a new calendar under your MobileMe login name (I'm assuming you've upgraded to the new MobileMe calendar) and import the .ics file into this. Delete the previously imported calendar. (If you don't want to use MobileMe just leave the imported calendar where it is.)
You can't separate the Palm categories and you will need to go through it making any necessary adjustments.
It's worth considering BusyCal, which is like  'Pro' version of iCal with much better handling of ToDos and many extra facilities. On an iPod Touch it's well worth considering Week Cal which, though I've not tried it, appears to be a much better calendar than the rather basic built-in one.
TASKS - you will have to enter these manually, one at a time - it doesn't appear to be possible to import them into iCal. iCal won't handle repeating ToDos - BusyCal will. They also make BusyToDo for iOS which reads the ToDos from the MobileMe calendar and handles them separately and much better.
ADDRESSES - you can export these as a vCard - select all first - and import that into Address Book (watch out for duplicates if you are already using Address Book).
It's not clear if you have MobileMe: if you don't want to sync between computers or iPhone/iPod Touch you don't need it, but if you do it's the best way - Google and Yahoo have issues. However you should be able to sync to an iPod Touch using iTunes, though as I don't have this device I don't know whether there are any downsides.

  • When migrating from PC to Mac is it necessary to restore iPad to factory settings?

    Hi everyone!
I recently decided to migrate from PC to Mac. Everything is amazingly easy now. I have already migrated my iTunes Library with no hassle and I am very pleased with my decision. I had no problem either with my iPhone nor my iPod but with my iPad, thats a different story.
I just have one unsolved problem relative to the backup that iTunes performs each time I sync it with my Mac. It takes hours and somewhere near the end iTunes tells me it was not possible to backup. So if I want to sync I must skip the backup process but I know that's too risky. I can't even upgrade the iOS on my iPad because of the backup issue.
I have read in some other forums that maybe this is because when I bought my iPad it was formatted to sync with PC and restoring factory settings would solve the problem.
Is there any other way to solve this? Because I have a lot of information that comes from inApp dowloads and I would like to skip long hours of re-downloading my content.
    Thanks!

There is no Windoze and OS X formatting with an iPhone, iPod Touch, or iPad.
The problem is with your existing backup.
At the iTunes menu bar go to iTunes > Preferences.
Under the Devices tab select and delete the existing iPad backup.
Control-click on your iPad under Devices in the iTunes source list and at the menu window that appears, select Back Up to create a new backup.

  • 6509 conversion from CatOS to IOS

I am interested in hearing from those who have converted from CatOS to IOS using 6500 as primarily a LAN switch with InterVLAN routing. Are there valid reasons / advantages to running IOS over CatOS? It seems to me that the CatOS is more efficient language for configuring switch ports and the IOS is better for configuring routing. I use 6509 in the core for server farms mostly and with the integration of many IOS based switches (3750) I am considering migrating the 6509 to IOS as well.
    Thanks,
    Greg

    Greg,
Cisco may support CATOS for a while, but I do think that they may end of life it in the future. Thats why there is a big push on the IOS over CATOS.
I feel that the IOS is equally efficient in configuring switch ports as CATOS. You can use interface range commands to configure common parameters to a range of switch ports. And the great thing about configuring switchports in IOS is that it will have the same syntax like your 3750 switches.
Here is a link that compares commands on both switches which will help a lot after migration.

  • Loading clob data/Migrating from Informix

    Hi,
I wanted to understand a way to insert clob data into the database. I see that you have ways of retrieving and displaying the clobs/blobs in your demo programs. But, how do we go about inserting clob data into a column? And especially, How to accomplish this when the data is stored in the form of a file?
We're in the process of migrating from Informix to Oracle and Informix has this way of storing the clob contents into .EMB files. Moreover, there is no one-to-one correspondence between each clob column and an .EMB file. Informix just knows how to load them up when you use FILETOCLOB(). In similar lines, do we have a way to load clob data from files to start with. And would be glad to get some intricacies on achieving the migration of data from Informix database.
Please send me pointers to docs and procedures, if available.
    Thanks for your time

    FYI, I have:
    1) Updated my iMac to the latest firmware 10.7.2
    2) Updated iTunes to the latest firmware 10.5
    3) I understand that the 4GS will arrive with IOS 5
    4) Done regular backups on my 3GS and will do the last one when my 4GS arrives
I read that iTunes does take care of all the guess work... meaning, all I have to do is connect my new phone when arrives and, other than clicking on a few "accept", "yes", etc, nothing else needs to be done. Since I recently migrated from PC environment, I am a bit hesitant to believe that everything will be trouble free...
    Comments, instructions...?

"...I've done this few times now..."
Great; however, I thought I ask since *technically* no one has done this specific migration yet.
I hope apple techs that have work on it chime in with some tips

  • Migration from rapid-pvst to mst

Hi, we need to migrate our switching network (2 6513 and 8 4507 all running ios, we are using more than 200 vlan) from rapid-pvst to mst (we are going to interconnect some non-cisco switch). Is there any suggestion about this migration? Thank you.

Since you're having more than 200 vlan's, this suggestion of migrating from PerVlan RSTP(PVRSTP) to Multiple Spanning Tree (MST) is a good one. Before that ensure whether your cisco ios version supports MST feature. I think your catalyst switches all will support MST. It has2 main advantages.
    1.Load Balancing,
    2.Less cpu burden.
The following document explains in detail about MST:
