  • Migrating from Windows XP to MAC

I am currently a new user of Lightroom 2.1 In the next month or two I will be moving from a Windows XP machine to a new MacBook Pro.
I wonder how that will be accomplished.
    1) Are there anything recommended to do in preparation for the migration as I start importing pictures into Lightroom 2.1?
    2) Can I use the same CD to install it in the MAC OS environment. Note I will only use the MAC version once I am migrated.
    3) Any issues with registration on two machines?
    Thanks for your help,

This wasn't a complete disaster, but there were some really messy things. No problems moving the photos, catalogs, installing Lr 2.2, and getting the catalogs converted. It pulled all the keywords and changes to the photos over to the new machine, but only in thumbnail view. This is a good feature when you want to be able to search items you've archived, but works against you when you are trying to move files between machines.
When I unplugged the external drive, I couldn't get to the individual photos underlying the thumbs. When I double-click on a photo, it says it can't find it and asks me if I want to map it. Unless you have a meticulous folder naming convention, this is tough. The only thing I've been able to do is search on the file name in my hard drive and map there. It does have an option to map all other photos in that same folder, but it will take a long time to get my 21k photos remapped. The only thing I have going for me is that I set my camera to number photos continuously so I they are unique and searchable.
I've resigned myself to mapping photos as I need them. It's a pain, but I spoke to Ram in Lightroom tech support and he said that's the only workaround he knows of and no feature in the application to facilitate.

  • No files seen after a 'successful' migration from windows PC to Mac

I attempted to transfer music, photos, movies, and documents from my windows 7 PC to my new MacBook Air using the migration assistant. After the migration was complete, I cannot find any of the files that were supposedly transferred.

Look in the Applications / Utilities folder.

  • Migrating from windows PC to mac

My father-in-law got his very first Mac for Xmas (an iMac) but previously has always been used to using a PC. He has an ipod which is currently linked up to his PC.
What are the best steps to take to transfer his ipod to the Mac? I was thinking backup the info from his ipod and then reformat it to a Mac version, then transfer the backup back onto the ipod??
Also, my mother-in-law has her own ipod, again linked up to the PC. What's the best and most simplest way for them to keep their accounts separate? Would I be better off setting them up their own user accounts? This is how they had the PC set up and I just want to make things as simple as possible for them (otherwise they'll have me round every week asking for assistance!).

Since migrating from Windows 7 to Windows 8 and upgrading to iTunes 11, the latter has frozen while syncing my devices, usually while at the “determining apps to sync” stage of the process.  If I am attempting to download app updates before attempting to sync, the problem normally occurs at the first “installing app x” stage.  In addition, the whole iTunes experience is extremely sluggish and will even freeze while searching for a track.  Everything worked fine on Windows 7.  So far, I have repaired the program several times and have checked for compatibility issues, but there is no Windows 8 option in the combo box, obtained after right-clicking the icon and selecting Properties/Compatibility.  As a result, I am unable to sync my devices. If I uninstall iTunes before re-installing, will this affect my iTunes libraries?  Does anyone have any suggestions?

After going by elimination to isolate if the problem was from (1) iTunes app, (2) my computer or (3) my old iPhone 4G, I figured out what my problem was.
    1) First I deleted & reinstalled iTunes on my Windows PC without succes, my playlist did not changed on my iPhone.
    2) I tested a successful #sync from the iMac at work.
So my conclusion is: The hard drive on my Windows PC is full and that is affecting iTunes SYNC functionalities.
So I'll do a back-up then run a "Clean Install" of my Windows OS, hoping that it will fix my SYNC problems.

  • Migrating from Windows (Adobe PE + Bridge(?)) to Mac (iPhoto + Adobe PE)

I have a family member who is thinking about switching from Windows to a Mac. She is currenlty using Adobe stuff on Windows (PE 4) where she edits and organizes her photo's.
I've set her up for trial with one of my Macs with PE 4 installed. Now the question is, will she be using iPhoto or Adobe Bridge on the Mac and what is more important, how can she migrate in either situation?
Personally, I think iPhoto/PE is the best solution, but how should she migrate her Windows photo database to het Mac and might migrating to Adobe bridge not be easier?

    Gerben:
If Photo Bridge can write the metadata, primarily the keywords, to the files then importing the folders that the file are located in will create rolls in iPhoto with the same title as those folder. Also the keywords should be read by iPhoto and included in its database.
As you know iPhoto is a image management application but one with the additional features of slideshows, books, etc. It can group photos by whatever criteria the user want. Bridge is primarily a browser type application.
To migrate her Windows photos to iPhoto she should first copy the folders of image files to the Mac. Then download and run BatChmod on each folder with the settings shown here, putting your administartive name in the owner and group sections. You can either type in the path to the folder or just drag the folders into that field. This will assure that the permissions/ownership are properly set before importing into iPhoto.
    Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've written an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB file backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • When using the migrate tool to migrate from windows to mac, can you use ethernet to connect the computers to each other?

When using the migrate tool to migrate from windows to mac, can you use ethernet to connect the computers to each other? In the Migration tool, I was only given the option of choosing the computer when it appeared on the same network, and didn't see an option to connect them to each other. Even though they're both connected to the same network with a wired connection, the migration is painfully slow.

Yes. The following quotation is from About Windows Migration Assistant
These are the preferred network connections, in order:
Use a CAT6-certified Ethernet cable that is in good condition to connect the Ethernet port of the PC directly to the Ethernet port of the Mac or Ethernet adaptor (USB or Thunderbolt). You shouldn't use an Ethernet cable that has any kinks in it or is missing connector tabs.
Use CAT6-certified Ethernet cables that are in good condition to connect the Mac and PC to your home network router/hub/switch. You shouldn't use an Ethernet cable that has any kinks in it or is missing connector tabs.
For wireless, use the fastest wireless signal possible (802.11n 5Ghz). Try to have the PC, Mac, and the wireless access point all in the same room close to each other.

  • Trouble Migrating Eudora mailboxes from Windows PC to Mac

I am having trouble transferring my Eudora mail boxes from my old Windows 2000 PC to my new iMac. I successfully installed Eudora for Mac but ran into a snag.
According to Eudora, Windows .mbx mailbox files can easily be migrated from Windows to Mac:
    http://www.eudora.com/techsupport/kb/1644hq.html
However they must be converted with their CRLF utility in order to work under Mac. They provide a link to this utility on the aforementioned page.
I downloaded their CRLF v1.2 utility and installed it on my Mac, except either it's not working, or I don't know how to use it, and the readme instructions that came with it are confusing and unclear. Executing CRLF v1.2 generates a "...not supported in this system" error.
(taken from the Eudora support page)
    "Moving the Mailboxes:
Both versions of Eudora keep their mailboxes in the same format, so conversion is relatively painless. However, Macintosh and Windows file systems handle text differently, so line feed conversion must be done. You can do this by FTPing the files in ASCII (text) mode, or by using a carriage return/line feed conversion utility like CRLF. It's very important that you FTP or convert the files to take care of the carriage return/line feed processing.
The mailbox files on the PC are the ones in the Eudora directory that end in ".MBX". (Don't bring over the ".TOC" files). "
I tried removing the .mbx extension, but Mac only recognizes it as "Document." Eudora doesn't recognize it as an "Eudora mailbox file." I see the Eudora mailbox files Eudora generated have no file extension.
I signed up for Eudora support forum so I could ask there, but they never sent me a confirmation email with activation link, so I can't post anything there. There's no way to contact the webmaster about this problem, email bounces back with "we no longer offer support."

  • Migrating browsing history from Windows 7 to Mac.

I created a Firefox Profile and synced from Windows 7 to Mac.
Only a small amount of my browsing history was migrated (from 9 July 2013 onwards).
There are approximately 47 500 entries going back to September 2010.
I downloaded the History Export add-on and tried exporting my browsing history in the .html format. Firefox kept crashing and I could not complete this.
Is there any way to migrate my entire browsing history to my Profile and my Mac?
    Many thanks

  • Migrating Eudora from Windows to the MAC (w. latest Mavericks version)

I am planning to migrate from Windows (XP) to a new MAC. My major stumbling block in the way of this switch is migrating reliably from Eudora 7.1.0.9 paid mode to MAC Mail without losing, corrupting, etc. my mail which is now stored on my PC. Based on older threads I learned that the import facility of the MAC is not the appropriate tool to use and that Mailbox Cleaner no longer works under Mavericks. I read all related old discussions but the world changed. I am not a computer expert, just a plain old user.  I do not know how I would move a backup of Eudora mail from my PC to the MAC. Do I need to have a MAC formatted DVD or stick, is it a straight copy? Do I need to use "special" directory/file structures on the MAC? Can someone who actually recently accomplished this migration without major issues help with suggestions for tools and steps to accomplish it?
I also would appreciate comments from those who know both Eudora and current MAC mail about what is that MAC Mail doesn't provide, as compared to features/functionality offered by the MAC Mail. I love the fast and selective (across all or some mailboxes) search capability of Eudora, the smart filters, great sorting capability, no limitation for mailbox, folder, message size or number, the great spell checker, support for multiple accounts, the friendly, clean user interface, message preview capability, low memory usage, smart spam filtering, etc. The list goes on. Will I find similar capabilities with MAC Mail?
Your help would be very much appreciated.
P.S. This is my first time using this forum. How do I set up Email notifications when someone answers?

I have not received any help to this question but I was able to successfully migrate from my beloved Eudora to Apple's mail. I will summarize the experience for the benefit of anyone else who needs to accomplish the same.
After some research I came across an application that claimed that can do the migration: Emailchemy. I read their manuals. As commented by others, the manual from Emailchemy is cryptic and hard to follow. There is nothing to explain how one needs to use the application when migrating from a PC to a MAC. As it turns out the product has to run on both ends, on the PC and on the MAC. Since I am not a technical user, I tried to get help from their Email based Help Desk. They do not appear to be setup to help individual users. Quoting from their replies: “you may also convert to the IMAP format and use the ImportServer -- but that's more complicated and if you're not confident of your understanding of email clients and servers, you may want to avoid it.”. “Just follow the prompts in Emailchemy and do what they say. This can be a complicated move and I recommend you ask for help with it from someone you know who may be more familiar with Mac computers. Explaining how to use the Mac and the Mac Mail app over email will be difficult.”  When I tried to follow up with them they just ignored my Emails and never replied.
Luckily I also located the Aid4Mail application from Fookes Software (https://www.fookes.com). I read their excellent manual and contacted Fookes with additional questions. I got very clear and helpful answers very quickly and was reassured that the application will convert on the PC my Emails to MBOX files that can be then copied to the MAC and imported into Apple's mail. I tested the software which was very easy to run and then licensed it for 2 weeks and did the migration. All my Emails were migrated while my folder structure was preserved. The dates, and all of the header info were also preserved and all attachments were kept with their respective messages.  Messages were marked unread which helped me compare the message count from Eudora with the message count (available for unread messages) in MAC Mail. Julian from Fookes Software's Help Desk even recommended using a free application for migrating my Eudora address book (Dawn). Dawn's website: http://mysite.verizon.net/zakharin/software/Dawn/
I could not be more pleased with what I got for the money ($29). I highly recommend the application and the company for their excellent support.

  • Migrating from Windows Photoshop Elements to iPhoto '08

I recently got a Mac and I'm looking into migrating from Windows Photoshop Elements 6.0 to iPhoto 7 ('08).
I've seached this forum, but I didn't find any detailed tips, tricks and recommendations on how to do the migration. I know about the PE (Photoshop Elements) command to write keyword information into the files (something like File->write tags to file). Someone (IIRC Barbara B.) also mentioned something about scripts to make the transition smoother, although I haven't seen any detailed information on what and where these scripts are. Basically, I'd like to hear from users who have migrated from Windows Photoshop Elements. I have thousands of pictures and prior planning can save me lots of time.
    Some questions:
    1. Photoshop Elements has a tagging feature, which is similar to iPhoto's keyword feature. Not sure how iPhoto will process the keywords. Do I just import the pictures into iPhoto and iPhoto will recognize the keywords? Should I create the keywords in iPhoto ahead of time prior to import (using names that exactly match Photoshop tag names) ?
    2. In PE, I've assigned captions to pictures. Can iPhoto read the captions and treat them as titles or descriptions?
    3. In PE, I've assigned ratings to pictures. Can iPhoto read them, or do I need to manually redo the ratings in iPhoto?
    4. One PE feature that I will really miss is hierarchical tags (e.g. Family->Kid's name). (Aside: everyone, please put in a request to Apple to support this feature!!) While I would prefer a native iPhoto feature to support hierarchical tags, I saw that there are 3rd party plugins available. What's the best one in terms of features and long term support/viability? Is it Keyword Manager?
    5. Any easy way to translate my PE Album definitions when migrating to iPhoto? I assume I would need to recreate them from scratch based on keywords and optionally ratings?
    6. I'm afraid to ask this next question (and I'm sure this is worthy of many separate threads). I'm still grappling with the concept of Events. In my mind, an event is something "monumental", and I've used Albums in PE for these "monumenal" events. A large percentage of my pictures don't really fit into a "monumental event" categary. Instead, they are pictures that were taken in a random/candid manner. Or, I might have pictures that are truly events, but maybe only 1 or 2 pictures would fit into an event. If I started using iPhoto from the very beginning, it may be easier to deal with the concept of events. However, I already have thousands of pictures. I'm wary of importing all my pictures in one shot (rather than on a per "event" basis), since it may result in hundreds of events, which, IMO, wouldn't provide much organizational value. Anyone have any tips/philosophical opinions on how to deal with events when thousands of pictures need to be imported? Someone (T.D.?) mentioned they organize by year for older pictures. Any suggestions?
    Thanks!

Can't answer all your questions, but I'll have a go at a couple.
If you write the tags to the file then iPhoto will recognise them as part of the IPTC data. There is no way to create tags in advance.
    2. In PE, I've assigned captions to pictures. Can iPhoto read the captions and treat them as titles or descriptions?
Can Elements write these to the IPTC data? If so, iPhoto should read them. A little trial will confirm.
    3. In PE, I've assigned ratings to pictures. Can iPhoto read them, or do I need to manually redo the ratings in iPhoto?
No, the IPTC data does not recognise ratings.
Keyword Manager is the way to do this.
    5. Any easy way to translate my PE Album definitions when migrating to iPhoto? I assume I would need to recreate them from scratch based on keywords and optionally ratings?
What do you mean by "album definitions"?
    About Events:
Don't get hung up on a word. They could have as easily called them 'trousers' and it would make almost as much sense
An 'Event' is an import that is automatically divided into folders depending on the criteria you set in the iPhoto Preferences.
Events in the iPhoto Window correspond exactly with the Folders in the Originals Folder in the iPhoto Library package file (Right click on it in the Pictures Folder -> Show Package Contents).
You can move photos between Events, you can rename Events, edit them, create them, as long as you do it via the iPhoto Window. Check out the Info Pane (wee 'i', lower left) the name and date fields are editable. Edit a Event Name using the Info Pane, the Event Folder in iPhoto Library/Originals will also have the new name.
So, really an Event is a Folder.
For my money, Events are a very limited way of organising photos. They are strictly date and time based. As time goes by I consolidate them - Spring 06, Summer 07, America 08 (I do this as we have three cameras feeding the Library).
I organise using Albums, Smart Albums and Keywords.
Albums (Smart or otherwise) are virtual entities. Unlike Events, they reference files on the HD, so a pic can be in 1,10 or 100 Albums with no extra disk space used. (To have a pic in two events requires two copies of the files.) They are infinitely flexible and offer a much richer set of possibilities.
How have you your photos organised currently? In folders? On what basis? If you can explain how that works we may be able to help you recreate this system in iPhoto.
    Regards

    Hi,
The reason may be that you have increased the memory parameters for this new system and it is now using the memory slice you provided.  Try to identify what are the areas that are using more memory using transaction ST02. Also review the recommendations for memory parameters  in the following notes:
