my iTunes home base is on an old XP pc and I would like to migrate it to my newer laptop (windows 8) and make this pc the home base. Can anyone tell me if this can be done, and if so how. Thanks

Yeah, you have to make sure both the pc and laptop, or any other computer on your router, has the same workgroup name. Just in case you do not know where it is, it is located under properties under My computer and when you get there, the tab's name is Computer Name. Once you make sure they are both the same, or change any of them, you will have to restart. Then locate the files you are trying to copy and make sure they are in a location where they are in a folder of some sort. Once in a folder, you can share the folder. You can right click the folder and select: Sharing and Security. Then choose the option of Sharing this folder. This should lead you to sharing it on both computers so whatever computer that is connected to the router can see this folder.
To see the folder, make sure you visit: My Network Places, or visit your network adaptor to see the options of seeing the entire network, or workgroup pcs.
This should be it.

Yes it will work. I've done it for a few users in my small office. As with anything, there are quirks that you may or may not experience. Most quirks are app-related, due to app developers hard-coding absolute paths into their apps for things like temp files (Photoshop). Strategies for resolving these sorts of quirks can be found via google. You would probably have seen these quirks already when using server-based home folders for your kids. If you haven't noticed them, then you're probably fine.
The tech note you cited should be fine. It doesn't explicitly say so, but you'll need to enable ssh on your server, at least temporarily, so you can upload your home folder to the server using scp, rsync, etc. Don't try to copy the files up to the server via Finder.
Once all your files are transferred to the server and in the right place, make sure to chown them on the server, so they are owned by the userID you created for yourself on the server.
As with anything this involved, make a good backup of your laptop first.
Note I have one user that isn't too happy with the responsiveness of the periodic mobile home syncing. She has about a decade of e-mail in her home folder, probably 50 to 100 emails per day, many with attachments. Mobile home syncing takes a long time to check and sync this huge tree of itty-bitty files, eevn with server-side file tracking turned on. The other users are happy.
The nice thing about mobile home syncing is that when a user "graduates" to an age where they've earned their own laptop, you can change them from a server home user to a mobile home user, with a minimum of fuss. Also, if you lose or break a laptop, you can add a new replacement laptop to your network, and pull-down a replica of the home folder from the server, with almost no downtime.

So, for the last 10 days I have simply been trying to move all of my iTunes stuff from an old Dell Inspiron to a brand new Dell Inspiron.
I have a bit of a unique situation as it's more or less escalated annoyingly over the last couple years, so I will start at the begining:
I have an iPhone 4 that was originally synced with an older model of Dell Insipron laptop. The iPhone is still running iOS 6 becasue there is not enough room on the phone to update to iOS 7 (Since it can't get iOs 8). I recently bought a new laptop, a new Dell Inspiron. My plan was simply to transfer everything from the old Dell to the new Dell, factory reset the iPhone then update it to latest iOS possible, and sync all my music and apps back onto it with the new Dell, leaving it synced to the new Dell.
Both Dells are running the newest version of iTunes and latest Windows Updates available. The old one is running Window's Vista, the new one has Windows 8. I originally thought I'd just put all the music files onto a USB and import them onto the new Dell. This unfortunately doesn't work because a vast majority of the music is protected files as they are off CD's or other means. Thankfully, iTunes has the nifty Home Sharing ability. I authorized both laptops and turned on home sharing on both laptops all with the same iTunes account and it instantly home shared about 90% of all my files. I think the internet connection was lost before the transfer was completed. Now I have about 200 songs left that won't home share.
When I select to import these songs the first time after both laptops restarting it says it requires authorization. I deauthorize and reauthorize both laptops and turn home sharing back on. After this, I can select to import these songs again, this time the process starting but immediately getting 'stuck'. I have fiddled with it enough times to realize that what is going on is as soon as Home sharing between the laptops begins, the older laptop instantaneously freezes and will only come back with a hard reboot (holding the power key). I have even tried running iTunes and the laptop in safe mode with the same problem occurring. The new laptop simply pops up with an error about a timed out connection once the old laptop has completely frozen.
I am quite tech savy, know both my laptops inside and out and have cleared the old laptop of everything unnecessary and turned off all unnecessary processes. The laptop works properly doing everything but Home Sharing, so this has to be a problem with iTunes. I tried Calling Apple Support, only to be told they wont even think about the issue unless I pay for apple care, which I can most definitely not afford right now. Really, I just need this stuff transferred so I can wipe the iPhone so I can update the iOS and have my personal iTunes on my new laptop.
Please can anyone help, I would be so grateful.... iTunes has been nothing but trouble ever since i got my first iPod, and it's not even the products, it's always just the iTunes software on my laptop that causes the issue. I really don't care how I get these protected files off the old laptop onto the new one, I just need help getting them there!
Also a note: I no longer have the majority of the Cd's, etc, that these files came off of... Alot of them now belong to other family members who may well be accross the other side of the country.

I already tried the following:
a. Turned the phone off and then on.
b. Checked all wifi connections – no problem given that all our laptops and desktops can connect seamlessly.
c. I tried restoring the phone to original factory settings via itunes
d. Tried resetting the phone.
e. Tried different microsims from all networks
f. However, all methods failed given that the network reception is very weak and often reflects – “no service”. And with regards to the wifi reception It has difficulty in reading even the signal right in front of the wifi router.
I went to two Apple resellers here in Bangkok and requested that they please look at my Iphone and have it serviced. I was frustrated when they said that given that I bought my phone in Canada, they are not able to support me and should instead try to contact the Apple store in Canada.
I went to apple.ca website and went to the expresslane support and I was said to register and callback. Tried calling the 1800 number but given that I was in Thailand I had difficulty getting a connection.

In addition to RyanJC's comments, the 802.11n AirPort Express Base Station (AXn) can store up to five different http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=108081 configuration profiles. You will need to use the AirPort Utility to create & save these profiles.
To create a new profile:
Open AirPort Utility, select your AX from the list, and then, click "Manual Setup."
From the AirPort Utility menu, select "Base Station," and then "Manage Profiles."
Click "+" to create a new profile; give it a name, and then, click OK.
Set options, such as network name, passwords, Internet connection method, etc.
When done setting the options, click Update.
To switch profiles:
Open the AirPort Utility, select your AX from the list, and then, click "Manual Setup."
From the AirPort Utility menu, select "Base Station," and then "Manage Profiles."
Click on the desired profile, and then, click OK to apply the new profile and restart the AX.
Just remember to switch to the desired configuration profile before removing power from the AX.

Copy iTunes from Home Computer to Work Laptop

Is it possible to copy files from the itunes library on my home computer to the laptop that I use at work? I am not sharing files with anyone else so I don't believe I am attempting to do anything unethical. I don't want to permanently move the music files and no longer be able to listen to them at home. I am just wondering if I can also have a copy at work. Through the support page, I found instructions on how to move files to a new computer, but I think that will permanently remove them from the old location. thanks.

Just follow the instructions but don't delete the library from the other computer.

I want to log on to my home computer when I am on the road using my laptop and my .Mac account. Home is iMac and laptop is macbook. Both have leopard. I cannot find a way to set this up although the demo makes it look like a breeze. I have used "go to my pc" in the past and love it. Media is only where the user puts it.
Copy the ENTIRE iTunes folder from the old computer or the backup of the old computer to the new computer.

SOLVED: ODBC setup without using ORACLE_{HOME,BASE,SID} possible?

Hi All,
I've installed instant client 11.1.0.6 on RHEL linux.I can connect with sqlplus with connection string like
sqlplus user/pass@//host/service. ORACLE_{HOME,BASE,SID}, TNS_ADMIN are not set. That works fine. Can I achieve the same with odbc and isql? I would like to be able to run isql DSN and all the configuration of the DSN should go into /etc/odbc.ini and I shall not set up ORACLE_{HOME,BASE,SID}, TNS_ADMIN. Is that possible? If yes, how?

I wonder if it is possible to take it a step further and connect only providing the DSN and no setup in the environment at all.
All the configuration should be in odbc.ini. Does it make any difference if the application connects using SQLConnect()
or SQLDriverConnect()?

Your content will only be where you put it. It has always been very basic to always maintain a backup copy of your computer.
You can transfer itunes purchases from your iphone: File>Device>Transfer purchases.
You can import your pics taken with the iphone as you would with any digital camera.
You can e-mail the other pics to yourself, they will never be of the original quality.
You can out a unique contact and calendar entry on the computer. You should get the option to merge the data when you sync.
