Migrating Informix IIF 2000 (IDS 9.21) to Oracle 8i/9i

There is a lot of information available on migrating from
Informix 7.3 to Oracle but their does not seem to be any info on
migrating from Informix 9.21 to Oracle. Has anyone had any
experience with this migration? I would like to know the
differences in migration process between Informix 7.3 and 9.21
and what your experiences were. Can the Informix 7.3 plugin for
the migration workbench work on a Informix 9.21. database?

You can't use the Informix 7.3 plugin on a 9.X informix database.
There may be a 9.X plugin to help migrate those who migrated
from 7.X to 9.X, i.e the plugin will not migrate any 9.X specific
database objects such as User Defined Types and Collections.

• Migrate Informix 7.31 Database into Oracle

Dear all,
I intend to import an Informix Dynamic Server 7.31 Database into Oracle; In this case it's the database of an old system which is not in use anymore, so the purpose is strictly readonly.
No triggers, few procedures and functions.
I'd like to import the data into Oracle 11g, is this possible or do I have to import into 10g and then upgrade to 11g?
The docs say the migration workbench is the tool of choice, is there anyone who can provide me with some experience?
How do I verify the migration was successful and the data was imported exactly the way it was?
Thanks in advance,
Andy

Andy,
Informix can only be migrated using the older Oracle Migration Workbench 10.1.0.4 and as it says on the web site -
http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/database/migration/informix-085032.html
the only supported versions for the workbench are 9i and 10g.
However, this is only for running the workbench itself and creating the repository. If you do an offline migration then you can run the scripts created by the migration utility in any version of Oracle and load the data using any version of SQL*Loader.
It may be that you can create the repository for the 10.10.4 workbench in an 11g database but I've never tried it.
As for testing there is a section in the documentation -
Oracle® Migration Workbench User’s Guide Release 10.1.0.4 for Microsoft Windows 98/2000/NT/XP and Linux x86
Chapter 7 - Testing the Oracle Database
that discusses how you can test the migrated data.
I've only ever run small test migrations and issues can depend on the complexity of the data and particularly stored procedures and embedded SQL.
If you have no triggers, few procedures and functions then it should be fairly straightforward.
It is planned to include Informix migration in a later version of SQL*Developer but there is no date for that yet.

Mike

Hi Donald,
Thanks for your reply.
"ROGER"."ABB_FILE"."ABB04" means in user "ROGER" schema, have a table "ABB04", and have a column named "ABB04".
So the column's name is "ABB04", not exceed 30 characters.
The table's description in Informix as follows:
create table "roger".abb_file
abb00 char(2),
abb01 char(12),
abb02 smallint,
abb03 char(24),
abb04 char(30),
abb05 char(6),
abb06 char(1),
abb07 decimal(16,3) not null ,
abb08 char(10),
abb11 char(15),
abb12 char(15),
abb13 char(15),
abb14 char(15),
abb15 char(4)
And the table in Oracle's description:
CREATE TABLE "ROGER"."ABB_FILE"
"ABB00" VARCHAR2(2),
"ABB01" VARCHAR2(12),
"ABB02" NUMBER(5),

Dwaipayan Das

Hi Dwaipayan,
SQL Server migrations are not supported by the (old)OMWB anymore.
This functionality has been moved into the SQL Developer Migration Workbench.
SQL Server migrations are a built in feature of SQL Developer, which you can download for free here.
http://www.oracle.com/technology/products/database/sql_developer/index.html
Before downloading you can take a look at this viewlet demonstrating the migration of SQL Server Northwind database.
http://www.oracle.com/technology/tech/migration/workbench/viewlets/sqlserver.html
All the new migration features are based around SQL Developer.
Heres are new page

• Migration from 32-bit to 64-bit on Oracle 9.2.0.5

Hi guys.
I have two question for migration 32 bit to 64 (x86_64) bits on Oracle 9.2.0.5 for SAP 4.7 Enterprise?
1.- When i migrated 32 bits to 64 (x86_64) bits is necesary migrated to Oracle 10 ?
In the note SAP Note 960769 - Windows: Migration from 32-bit to 64-bit (x86_64), say that, pag 4:
" Oracle:
=====================================
On Windows Server 2003 X86_64 (64-bit), you may only use Oracle 10g Release 2 (10.2) software for X86_64 (64-bit) as a database. Note 949116 describes the installation (homogenous system copy) of old products that were not originally released on Oracle 10g Release 2 (10.2). If you want to make the copy using the backup/restore procedure, for which the source database was not yet upgraded to Oracle 10.2, see Note 932722"
But, in the pam matrix say that support for 9.2.
I confused for the information.
2.- In the case that is not necessary to migrate to oracle 10, i can execute the migration to 64 bits the SAP 4.7 with the procedure Backup/Restore?
I don´t have the new server, the server for the migration is the same. The procedure you want to follow is:
1.- Backup Offline all server.
2.- Delete the server, i install the server on Windows 2003 64 bits.
3.- Install SAP 4.7 on kernel 64 bits.
4.- Restore de backup offline (only data): datafiles, archive log, redo log.
Aprecciated for the help.
Best regards,
Desiré

Hi,
According to Note:814834
#Note that there is currently no 64-bit support for the x86_64 platform
for Oracle 9.2 because Oracle does not provide a 64-bit DB client for this purpose,
and, in addition, 64-bit operation of the DB server is not supported.
This means that this DB version can only be used in conjunction with SAP components on
Windows 32-bit on x86_64 hardware in 32-bit mode.
For more information, refer to the "Oracle" section in the note.
Furthermore, it states 32bit SAP instance can connect ot a 32 bit Oracle 9.2 or 10.2 database instance.
So for your case, its better to upgrade your current database to Oracle 10.2 and then proceed with migration.

• Migrating SYSTEM tablespace from DMTS to LMTS in Oracle 9.2.0.7

Migrating SYSTEM tablespace from DMTS to LMTS in Oracle 9.2.0.7 using
brspace -f dbcreate
SAP version: 4.6C
Oracle: 9.2.0.7
OS: AIX 5.3
BRTools: 6.40(42) /** 6.40(10) or (12) will be sufficient according to SAP ***/
IMPORTANT ***************************************
MUST DO:
1. Create a Full Backup of your system
2. Test your Restore and recovery of your backup.
3. Have a copy of all your tablespaces names on hand
4. Know your SYS and SYSTEM passwords
5. Run CheckDB in DB13 to ensure it is completed successfully with no warnings. This reduce the chance of hitting errors in the process
6. Ensure your UNDO tablespace is big enough
7. OSS 400241 Problems with ops$ or sapr3 connect to Oracle
NOTE: OSS 706625(Read this note)
The migration from a dictionary-managed SYSTEM tablespace to a locally-managed tablespace using the PL/SQL procedure DBMS_SPACE_ADMIN.TABLESPACE_MIGRATE_TO_LOCAL is not supported in the SAP environment.
In UNIX, logon as ora<sid>
run command: brspace -f dbcreate
This command will triggers a Menu. The are seven(7) steps to complete the whole process. Do them in sequence, from step 1 to step 7 faithfully. In Step 1, ensure that your settings of PSAPTEMP, PSAPUNDO etc details such as filenames are correct. The rest I leave it as default and they are fine. Do not change redo log group from 8 to 4 even if you only have 4 redo groups. If not, you might need to restore the system! If the seven steps are complete without errors(warnings is acceptable), congrats. Perform a backup again.
Problems I encountered that caused me to restore system:
1./ Problem: I changed the redo group from 8 to 4 and in the later stage after the tablespaces and files are dropped, the system prompted me that 4 is not acceptable! I can't go back then so a restore is performed.
Solution: Leave the default value 8 as it is
2./ I was using wireless network and the network breaks thus process breaks.
Solution: This process in user-interactive and requires you to input confirmation along the way so do it using LAN.
3./ In the process of dropping tablespace PSAP<SID>, I encountered:
BR0301E SQL error -604 at location BrTspDrop-2
ORA-00601: error occurred at recursive SQL level 1
ORA-01555: snapshot too old: rollback segment number 22 with name '_SYSSMU22$" too small
Solution: I have not fixed this yet but I think it is because my PSAPUNDO is too small(800M) so I will increase it to a bigger value e.g. 5GB
4. Problem: Unable to start sap after successfully migrated. OPS$user problem
Solution: logon as <sid>adm, run R3trans -x in a directory that <sid>adm has read/write permission. R3trans -x will creates a file call trans.log. Read the details and refer to OSS 400241
Result: I have successfully performed this on one(1) system and doing this on the another one currently but encounter Problem 3. Will update this further if there are more findings.

The current one I am implementing is a development system. The database is less than 100GB. 800MB of PSAPUNDO is sufficient for our development usage.
Follow up on Problem 3:
I created another undo tablespace PSAPUNDO2(undodata.dbf) with size of 5GB. I switched undo tablespace to PSAPUNDO2 and placed PSAPUNDO(undo.data1) offline. With PSAPUNDO2 online and PSAPUNDO offline, I started brspace -f dbcreate and encountered the error below at Step 2 Export User tablespace:
BR0301E SQL error -376 at location BrStattabCreate-3
ORA-00376: file 17 cannot be read at this time
ORA-01110: data file 17: '/oracle/DVT/sapdata1/undo_1/undo.data1'
ORA-06512: at 'SYS.DBMS_STATS", line 5317
ORA-06512: at line 1
I aborted the process and verified that SAP is able to run with this settings. I started CheckDB in DB13 and it shows me these messages:
BR0301W SQL error -376 at location brc_dblog_open-5
ORA-00376: file 17 cannot be read at this time
ORA-01110: data file 17: '/oracle/DEV/sapdata1/undo_1/undo.data1'
BR0324W Insertion of database log header failed
I don't understand then. I have already switched the undo tablespace from PSAPUNDO to PSAPUNDO2. Why the message above still appears? Once I put PSAPUNDO online, CheckDB completes successfully without warning.
I did show parameter undo_tablespace and the result is PSAPUNDO2(5GB).
So exactly, what's going on? Can anyone advise?
===============================================
I have managed to clear the message in DB13 after dropping PSAPUNDO tablespace including contents and datafiles. This is mentioned is OSS note 600141 pg 8 as below:
Note: You cannot just set the old rollback-tablespace PSAPROLL to offline instead of deleting it properly. This results in ORA-00376 in connection with ORA-01110 error messages. PSAPROLL must remain ONLINE until it is deleted. (Oracle bug 3635653)

Hi,
You could the free Oracle SQL*Developer to do this.
There is information and a download link here -
Oracle SQL Developer</title><meta name="Title" content="Oracle SQL Developer"><meta n…
and information on using it for migrations here -
http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/database/migration/index-084442.html
You could use it in 2 ways -
1. Go through a migration but just pull the stored procedure code from the file created after you generate the SQL from the SQL*Server database
2. Use the scratch editor accessed from -
- Tools - Migration - Scratch Editor
and paste the SQL*Server stored procedure code into the window and it will convert it to Oracle code. The tool is very good but may have problems if you have very complicated procedures that use SQL*Server specific utilities.
