Migrating Internal Non Boot HD From Old G4 To Mac Pro

Hey guys,
I have done a search and haven't been able to find anything to help me with this. I have an extra internal HD in my old G4, it is a non boot drive. Now I want to be able to transfer all the files from it to my new Mac Pro. When I try and connect them via migration assistant, it only mounts my original G4 boot drive on the Mac Pro. Does anyone have any suggestion as to how I can get the etra internal HD to mount?
Regards,
Alex

Yes, migration assistant only works with boot drives because it is designed to migrate things like user settings, applications, and so forth. It looks for drives or partitions that contain "blessed" system folders and files, to throw out an old-school Mac term.
You probably cannot put the G4 drive in your Mac Pro; the Mac Pro's bays are SATA. Your G4 is IDE.
However, you can boot your G4 in Firewire Target Mode (restart holding down the T key) and then plug the G4 into the Mac Pro via FireWire, and the G4 will mount as a drive on the Mac PRo. From there, you can copy whatever you choose from the old drive.
You can also remove the G4 drive and place it in an enclosure. I really like the ones Wiebetech.com has - I have a triple interface enclosure that offers USB, FW400, and FW800 connectors.
BTW, many people have found that using Migration Assisant is troublesome, myself included. After trying it and experiencing less than stellar performance, I wiped the Mac Pro and set it up from scratch. It's just not a good idea to copy between entirely different architectures. I've had fine results going from G4 to G5, but not from G5 to intel-based macs.
Hope this helps!
I think that migration assistant only works with boot
drives. However, there are lots of other ways to
transfer files. The Mac Pro has 4 hard drive bays, so
one option could be to put the drive into one of
those bays... There are external drive enclosures and
CD burners, as well.

  • Can't transfer photo files from old iBook to Mac Pro

When I travel, I upload my photos using a card reader onto my iBook (1.2Hz, 762 RAM). At home, when I try to transfer them to my Mac Pro Quad (2.66Hz, 3Gb RAM) the transfer always starts OK (a number of files transfer) but then stalls out on a particular file. If I go back to my iBook and remove the "stalled" file, then try the transfer, it starts OK and then stalls on a new file, further "down the list".
So I basically can't transfer the files. Curiously, I have tried transfering the files from my iBook to a CF card and the same thing happens, so it seems the issue is with the iBook. Why would it be an issue only in one direction, ie, no problem uploading the files onto the iBook from my CF card reader? Could this be a memory issue? Any thoughts or suggestions?? Thanks.

I suspect a bad HD in your iBook. Pretty much anything that involved stalling and HDs means that.

  • Can I move XP install image or XP Boot drive from windows PC to Mac Pro?

I have a computer running Windows XP and I have the OEM disc for reinstallation. I also have an image of a clean install of XP I can use to restore my OS. I plan to remove the hard drives from my Windows XP PC and never use that machine again because I have had nightmare after nightmare with some hardware and the vendor.
Can I use what I already have and set this up in a Mac Pro to use it under bootcamp or do I have to buy a new copy of XP, reformat the hard drives for the Mac and start all over? I have several programs that I need to run on Windows. Any suggestions on how to make the tranistion from a failing XP PC over to the Mac world would be greatly appreciated.

    Hi,
is the OEM XP disc a 'full WIndows disc' or some sort of recovery disc that came with the PC you have ?
If it came with the PC you have, chances are that it will only work with that specific PC (some Dell and HP do this).
When you have cleared this licensing question, you might have a good chance doing what you wnat by using this Guide: http://www.lockergnome.com/it/2007/05/25/using-sysprep-to-create-a-windows-xp-im age-part-i/

  • Using Migration Assistant to move files from old PC laptop to new MacBook Pro that has Windows 8 installed containing Outlook

When using Migration Assistant to move files from old PC laptop to new MacBook Pro, that has Windows 8 installed containing Outlook, will emails, contacts and calendar entries be moved to Outlook on the new MacBook or into Mail, Contacts and Calendar?

I doubt they will. But then I'm not sure as I used a migration program once about 18 years ago and totally FUBARed the system I had at that time and I've never used one again.
For me the reason to have a new system is to start fresh. Installing only program that I now use and manually copying data over from the older system.
Not sure your older version of Outlook, and the outlook mail boxes, are compatible with Office/Outlook for Mac 2011.
A better place to ask this question would be on the MS Office for Mac forums.
Hope it all works out for you.

  • If I put my 7300 in slot4 at 8x, and a 8800GT at slot1, 16x, could I boot 10.4.11 on my mac pro 1,1 if I unplug the monitor from the 8800GT?

    If I put my 7300 in slot4 at 8x, and a 8800GT at slot1, 16x, could I boot 10.4.11 on my mac pro 1,1 if I unplug the monitor from the 8800GT?
I have different os's installed on my different hard drives. I'm using 10.6.8 now, but I go back to 10.5.8 and 10.4.11 on accasion. Can I run 10.4.11 with the 7300 in the 8x lane? As long as I unplug the 8800GT but leave it installed in the 16x slot1? And attach a monitor to the 7300?
What about using the 7300 to run extra monitors or a monitor while running 10.5.8 and 10.6.8?  Is that a problem? I have 10GB Ram and the 1,1 original machine.

I know the 8800 requires 10.5.2, but if it is installed (at 16x) but no monitor is connected, will it allow the 7300 to control one or two monitors in 10.4.11? When the 7300 is in the 8x lane? And will it boot?
I lost part of your train of thought. Are you telling me to get just an ATI 5770 to continue using this machine into the future?
I thought the original mac pro 1,1 needed cards of the same manufacturer. If I use the 5770, that eliminates the ability to boot 10.4.11, correct?
What if I keep the 7300 handy in a box and put it in when I have to use 10.4.11? ( select the start up disc, shut down, change the card, restart) Does the 5770 require a power cable to another board that I might damage with repeated changes?

I looked at it, Barbara, but you can't download 9 without the discs.  I
originally downloaded it online and Adobe now tells me it only has 10 to
    download.

Did you not look at the link in the thread in my last post, Lorna?
When you buy software it's your responsibility to keep the media against
future reinstallations, whether you purchase via download or on disc. If
you registered your software, for PSE 9 you may still find a download
link in your adobe store account, if you purchased PSE that way, also.

What do I need to do differently?

The late, great Pondini was investigating that issue before he passed away.

I think there might be information there on how to reset Time Machine to do a full backup. I think you basically have to reset it and start over.

  • Migration from old to new MacBook Pro

Old machine uses Leopard. New machine uses Snow Leopard. If I use migration assistant from old to new, will new machine end up with Leopard instead of retaining Snow Leopard?

Hi guys, sorry to bug in. I searched on the different discussions available and found yours to be closest to my query.
I hope you don't me popping a few questions regarding Migration Assistant.
I have had a MacBook Air for about 2 years now, and recently bought a MacBook Pro.
I performed a Migration of the content in MBA to MBP and it was successful as far as content transfer is concerned.
Now I have the database from the MBA in the new MBP, but none of the user setting or Applications were "installed". I tried to open "Applications", "Movies" folders, but I was not allowed to open them.
Is it possible to migrate the content and use as if it was in MBA? Or do I have to download and reinstall the various programs/applications I had in MBA again? (eg Handbrake, VM Fusion, etc)?
Much appreciated for your time & feedback.
    Tony

  • Migrate email from old to new mac (outlook to entourage)

    Hello.
Anyone have any ideas on how to migrate email messages from an old imac (OS 9.2) to a new one (OS X). The old machine is running Outlook and the new one is Entourage. There are ways to save individuals messages as text and then move them over, but that is a lot of saving (one at a time). I don't see an export option in Outlook.
    Thanks for any advice.

When you booted up the new machine the first time, did you use the migration assistant? If not, you might want to try using the Restore disk and restore the Mac Pro to its factory state. Also, take a look at:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=25773 and A Basic Guide for Migrating to Intel-Macs. Those should get you started in the right direction.

So please let me know if there is any tool to migrate sharepoint 2007 infopaths data connection to sharepoint 2013 infopaths data connection.
Thank You in Advance for your help.
    Regards,

    Hi Pradeep,
As far as I could search, there is no built-in feature to batch updating InfoPath forms, I’d suggest you consider script or third party tool. Here are the links that might help:

  • Transfer from old to new Mac impossible

I can't transfer the information from old G5 to a new Mac Pro 8 core. Using T mode, as described, transfer doesn't occur after two hours at all. There is a window "Transferring information" but nothing happens. Using SuperDuper! or Migration Assistant from OS10.4.10 to copy the entire bootable volume from the external HD, is impossible. However, it's possible to copy the old volume to a second, non startup disk, but without libraries, which is worthless.
Do I have to manually transfer the libraries to the new computer in order to use the old applications? It's going to take for ever. I have no idea why the simple transfer from the old Mac to the new doesn't work as advertise.
