Migrating iPhoto Library results in just one iPhoto Event...?

Full story as quickly as possible: I upgraded to Mountain Lion, but that didn't go well. Two trips to the Apple Genius bar and we decided that we had to reinstall the operating system which would render the computer effectively brand new. I was also told not to save everything to time machine, because the problems I was having were likely part of the way the entire computer was running. Therefore I should save document, photos, music separately and then drag them back onto the "new" computer one at a time.
So computer is effectively erased and I had saved my iPhoto Library, but now when I drag it back from the external hard drive to the "new" computer, all photos are in one event, rather than the hundreds of events I had before. To organize these photos all again would take a few hundred hours more than I care to do.
I can go back into Time Machine and find other iPhoto libraries that are nearly the same with all my Events separately. How can I drag them into the current computer set up?
Thanks kindly.

Sorry it took so long for me to respond - sometimes apple notifies me by e-mail that there has been a response, sometimes it doesn't.
I think your answer helped me. I see that when I synched the photos (several weeks ago now), I selected "choose folder" in the drop-down window - the reason being that I use 2 different libraries for iPhoto and wanted to make sure it synched with my main library on the external HD rather than the default iPhoto library. But when I selected "iPhoto" in the drop-down menu instead, the iPod started synching with 1356 phots, which is the same number as appears in iPhoto when I open the library I want to synch with.

  • Import iPhotos Events into Photos and maintain previous structure?

I'm a long time iPhoto user and have about 45,000 photos from over a 30 year period that are organized into separate events with the event title being Year-Month-Activity.  Such as "2015-4 Easter".  It was painful to create those events but once they were done it was fantastic. We can quickly and easily pull-up all photos from my daughter's first birthday from 25 years ago, or look at all of her birthday photos. I probably have a thousand events and want to maintain that event structure when I move the library to any new photo program.
I'd like to use the new Photos program but when I imported the photos using one of my 'test' Macbooks ,Photos did (mostly) get it right and maintained most of the events in an album it created called iPhoto events.  That's fine for the legacy photos I'm importing.  HOWEVER as far as I can tell, from that point-on I can no longer add an Event and title it the same way in that iPhoto Events album.  So once I move my legacy library to Photos, the old stuff will be in the IPhotos Events photos and the new photos will have to be placed into a new Album.  So it will force me to split them.
Where this is important is when I point my Plex Server at them so that my extended family can view all of our old photos using Plex.  Currently I can just point Plex to the iPhotos library and it maintains the Events structure when it shows them on the TV.....which is awesome.  Family can see individual events and open just the one they want to see. Not sure how Plex is going to deal with the new Photos app but that's a question for me to post on their forum...
My question for this forum: is there a way to directly import legacy iPhoto events into Photos automatically so that each Event now becomes an Album in Photos with the old Event name?
    Thanks!

Moments in Photo are the new Events.  There's a way to simulate events in Photos.
When the library was first migrated there was a folder created titled iPhoto Events and all migrated iPhoto Events are represented by an album in the folder. To open the sidebar if it's not open use the Option+Command+S key combination.
When new photos are imported into the Photos library go to the Last Import smart album, select all the photos and use the File ➙ New Album menu option or use the key combination Command+N.  Name it as desired.  It will appear just above the iPhoto Events folder where you can drag it into the iPhoto Events folder
When you click on the iPhoto Events folder you'll get a simulated iPhoto Events window.
The downside to the simulation is that the Album/Events can only be sorted automatically by Title. But they can be sorted manually.
Ask Apple for more sorting options and/or other features in Photos via https://www.apple.com/feedback/photos.html.

  • I have lost all my iPhoto events after upgrading to Photos Version 1.0 (209.52.0)

I have lost all my iPhoto events. Or, am I missing something here?
I just upgraded to the new Photos from iPhoto on my iMac. The new Photos app imported and reorganized my photos by date and mixed all of my previous well organized iPhoto events into a jumbled lot.
How can I re-sort these photos back into an Event type of organization?
I think I had several thousand events.

Moments are the new Events.  All of your events in iPhoto are not Moments in Photo and were also brought over as an album. Open the sidebar with the Option+Command+S key combination and look in the folder titled "iPhoto Events".

  • How do I just backup just one user account on Time Machine?

    Hello everyone,
I've moved to a new computer with Mountain Lion and didn't have my backup disc available when I first set up the computer.  Now, after restoring from my backup, I have two user accounts that I am trying to combine as per instructions here.  I know it's challenging and I may have to reinstall the OS and start from scratch, so I'd like to backup before I do it.  Unfortunately I haven't plugged in Time Machine since I've used Migration Assistant, because I didn't know if I could or if it'd overwrite my old data.
How can I back up the new computer without creating two user accounts (the ones I'm trying to combine) on my external drive?  And please don't recommend just buying another external hard drive.  Any advice is appreciated.
    Thanks.

Aside from starting over, losing whatever you've done on the new machine, see Pondini's Transferring files from one User Account to another. If you haven't done much and can afford to lose that data, I suggest starting over, following the steps in Pondini's Setup New Mac guide. That should result in just one user account.

  • IPhoto library Gone! (replaced in just one click w/o ever dragging 2 Trash)

iPhoto library gone / replaced in just one click (w/ o ever dragging anything to the trash)!
I currently own multiple PowerMacs all sharing the same high speed local network. All of them run the latest / Mac OS X.4.9 and have multiple HD’s (both internal and external) as well as iLife’ 06. And all of them also have iChatAV3 and are able to video chat one with the other at will while on the same local high speed network.
This is my very first iPhoto library nightmare since I’ve owned a mac. and yes I’ve always been conditioned to backup everything one wishes to keep. This particular scenario is no different. (altho my back up HD for one of the three G4 computers involved was a bit dated by at least 6 months).
This was essentially triggered via two separate iLife ‘06 apps , namely iPhoto and iChatAV3 (combined with at least an ounce of stupidity on my part). That combined with 2 people not communicating properly / being on the same page (or rather the same Folder) when working on the very same task. Hey... I do NOT claim to be an expert at this particular application even though I have used macs since apple first introduced the Apple IIe decades ago. So this does not stem from lack of experience but rather not thinking things thru entirely in terms of all the possible consequences of simple, yet catastrophic actions when it comes to replacing or authenticating one particular folder containing the entire iPhoto Library simply titled “pictures”.
Starts like this, ichatav is open on 2 of three macs and my teenage daughter asks me to send her a roll of pictures she downloaded into my computer (since it’s twice as fast as her own) from her digital still camera. Now she wants all 12 photos on her computer as well. So I drag all 12 photos to my desktop and place them in a folder titled “Jackies pics”. I drag this folder to her icon on my buddy list and ichat AV simply refuses to allow sending the entire folder and ask me to send them one at a time. That should have been my first clue. Strange I thought. Always worked well in the past. Why not now? So I tell her over ichatav that the app simply won’t allow me to send her the entire folder and that I’ll have to send them one at a time. Please make a new folder on your HD called Jackie’s pics. She agrees and creates a folder on her end called .... (you guessed it) ...... “pictures”...... to which she drags each of the 12 images I sent over our local network.
Little did she realize this newly created folder has the makings of an atomic bomb when it comes to importing the entire folder into iPhoto’s library on her own mac. A dialog box quickly materializes asking that she “authenticate” or hit cancel. So she ask me what to do. I said that’s fine, hit authenticate (assuming she titled it Jackies pics). BIG mistake! She hits authenticate and now she has the 12 images I sent her in iPhoto....BUT .... the 1600 or so originals in the entire iPhoto library quickly vanishes. Her entire iphoto library is now wiped out or rather replaced with this new folder. She asks me, what happened? And in less than 30 seconds she in complete tears. Over 2-3 years of her photos (all 1600 images) gone in the click of a mouse.
Today is father’s day .... and I remembered that I have a complete backup of her HD (even though it is a bit dated). So together, we managed to recover about 90% of the lost images. If anyone reading this knows how I can possibly recover the final 10% (most current photos) then please help us.
Bottom line: We were fortunate. This Father’s Day iPhoto Nightmare ended happily....
    TIA

Just another update .... Today, my daughter was multitasking on her G4 powermac working within iPhoto as well as email account and last but not least the latest iTunes. As she opened this final app (and I mean "final").... her entire hard drive bit the dust after she saw the spinning beachball and hence attempted to force quit. (I should also point out we are having a heat wave in San Diego today ...which also may have contributed to this hardware issue mainly).
This time, I had a complete updated copy of her HD and simply cloned it to a new hard drive. Took me a few hours to troubleshoot, clone and install a new drive in its place. But all is working normally again (sure hope it stays that way this time).
Friendly reminder to those who read this post .....

This should be easy, but I can't figure out how to do it...
How do I take just one photo I have in my iPhoto library, and transfer it onto my iPhone?

  • How to migrate photo library from windows into iPhoto '09

I have spent altogether too much time fretting about this transition and searching for solutions online, and I'm certain someone else has figured this out.
I just switched from Windows to a mac, and I'm wanting to move my photo library into iPhoto. I already have my photos separated into folders by event (I used Picasa for Windows). Is there any way to get those 312 folders to translate into iPhoto Events? And for the hail mary, is there a way to import any Picasa data into iPhoto? I've found iPhotoExpert to basically do that the other way around (i.e. migrating from iPhoto to Picasa), but I'm looking to migrate to iPhoto from Picasa.
    Anybody done this successfully?

I realize iPhoto is not a file manager, I've gotten over that part. At this point I would just like it to recognize different folders as different events. I feel like that is a little feature that would go a long way, not only for migrating libraries like in this case, but also in the future.
I will often create separate folders within my camera's menus for different events, so that when I import the photos it makes it easier to distinguish the different events, even if they span multiple days. If only there was a checkbox next to "imported items from finder" called "treat folders as events when importing" that applied recursively to folders imported.
Update: I took a leap of faith and dragged a portion of my library into iPhoto (after unchecking that "Autosplit Imported items from Finder" checkbox) and it did exactly what I was hoping it would! Turns out it does apply recursively, which is really handy. I can just drag my entire "Pictures" folder with all of my photos nicely organized into events by folder into iPhoto, and it recognizes each folder as a separate event without having to drag each folder separately! hooray! I ended up doing so with the "Photos" icon selected in the sidebar, I don't know if that made a difference or not. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction!

  • Migrate iPhoto Library from my desktop to laptop

Currently, I have my iPhoto library with edits and albums on my desktop (iMac G4 1.25 GHz, 10.4.5, 5.0.4).
I am planning to stop using my desktop and am trying to figure out the best way to migrate this library as it is across to my wife's laptop (iBook G4 1.2GHz, 10.4.5, 5.0.4).
Any advice on the best way to do this?
Is there any way to simply sync the two iPhoto libraries?
    Many thanks in advance.

    Hi Neil,
Copy iPhoto Library folder from one Mac to another
-If the library is small enough, burn the ENTIRE iPhoto Library folder to CD/DVD.
Drag the iPhoto Library folder from the CD/DVD to your Pictures folder of the iMac.
-If the computers are networked, copy the ENTIRE iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder of the other Mac.
-If you have an iPod, copy the ENTIRE iPhoto Library folder to the iPod. Connect the iPod to the other computer and copy the iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder of the other Mac.
-If you have a firewire cable, copy the ENTIRE iPhoto LIbrary folder to the Pictures folder of the other Mac
    Things to keep in mind:
-If the usersnames are different you might have to set the permissions on the iPhoto Library folder to Read/Write for the new user. Check the "apply to enclosed items" at the bottom of the "get info" window.
-If there is another iPhoto Library folder on the other Mac, change it's name so it doesn't get replaced by the iPhoto Library folder you are copying into the Pictures folder...or....drag it to another place on your hard drive.

How do I send pictures from iphoto to a group via email instead of to just one individual? I can't type in more than one name or send the pictures to a group.

I had a similar problem in that my wife's iphone 5 could not send pics with imessage.  Had to set the settings to default to SMS or whatever.  After laboring many hours on the web I coincidentally was on the phone with the internet people to question my internet speed.  They changed the router channel, which is something that I am capable of doing myself.  After that, the pics go over imessage.  My own Iphone didn't have the problem.  We are both latest IOS 7.0.6.

  • When importing photo's into Apperture via iPhoto Browser I get 2 Versions of the master import as opposed to just one?

When importing photo's into Apperture via iPhoto Browser I get 2 Versions of the master as opposed to just one?
    Why is this?
    Are there two master photo's?

When you import to Aperture using this method you get all the versions that iPhoto has - Mster and Edited  version. If you haven't edited the photo then tow possibilities:
A: the photo is Raw and you'e gettting the automatic preview that iPhoto creates on import as well
B: The shot has an auto-rotate tag from the camera

  • How to Migrate iPhoto Library?

How do I migrate iPhoto library from MacBook Pro to iMac and keep Events and Faces?

Copy the iPhoto Library package/file from your MBP to the iMac.  Connect the two Macs and drag from MBP to the iMac and place in the Pictures folder.  Or if you have an external HD use it to transfer the library between Macs. DO NOT try to import the MBP library into a library on the iMac.

  • Migration, iPhoto and Aperture

I recently migrated my library from an emac running iPhoto 05 and using iPhoto Buddy to manage my libraries, to iPhoto 08. Wow, bit of a struggle but got there in the end. I only had 2 libraries running, work and home, which was a blessing. Now when I try to launch Aperture the message reads that my library is earlier than iPhoto 06, which clearly it isn't! More trouble. It has been suggested to me that I should remove my now complete one big library and reinstall it so Aperture recognises it. It sound like a good idea but how do I do it and is there an easier way for a non techi?
    Thanks,
    Tim

    Hi TD,
I'm getting there. What iPhotoBuddy did before was help to create multiple libraries (I made a home library which was called iPhoto library and a 'Work' one) and then it put up an interface to choose between the two. It was simple but effective. I didn't realise you could simply hold down the Alt key when you launched iPhoto and that would allow you to do the same (choose between libraries).
I am using iPhoto 7.1.3, by the way and yes, I have recently migrated from an older emac running iPhoto 5. When I migrated, iPhoto opened up in 'Work' library, obviously the last one I was using before I migrated. And I got in a stew because I couldn't find my other library. Eventually I found the other library and merged the two but in the process lost my names and albums from the iPhoto original library. You've just shown me how to toggle between the two, thank you.
And, better still, they now both appear in Aperture which was the original problem.
So to recap, both libraries now appear in Aperture, thank you for that. I now know how to toggle between the two, thank you for that. I now have my two libraries back operational and can move from one to the other by a key stroke on launching. I may well consider iPhoto manager if you recommend it. Sounds a bit like iBuddy. My only problem now is that I have all my work and home photos merged in my 'Work' library and I spent hours renaming all the photos, and of course there is a lot of duplication in the iPhoto library and the Work library. I could go through and simply delete the family photos from the work library (after I spent hours renaming them). I'd be interested now you've helped me resolve my problems, with great patience I should add, what should I do, carry on using the amalgamated Work folder, delete the family photos from the work folder and press alt to move between libraries on start iPhoto start up, or download Photo Manager?
    Many thanks,Tim

  • Migrate iPhoto

How do i migrate iPhoto library and albums from my previous MacBook Pro to a new one?

To move an iPhoto Library to a new machine:
Link the two Macs together: there are several ways to do this: Wireless Network,Firewire Target Disk Mode, Ethernet, or even just copy the Library to an external HD and then on to the new machine...
But however you do choose to link the two machines...
Simply copy the iPhoto Library from the Pictures Folder on the old Machine to the Pictures Folder on the new Machine.
    Then launch iPhoto. That's it.
This moves photos, events, albums, books, keywords, slideshows and everything else.
