Migrating Library files (playlists) from Windows to new mac?

Hi There;
I have New Mac Mini and WinXP SP2 laptop
both sharing a buffalo "network Drive"
with all the Media files - music and photos.
I want to migrate my iTunes library including
-- my rating, playlist, etc ... --to the new Mac Mini.
In the laptop, my iTunes Music folder is set to:
P:\My Music\iTunes\iTunes Music
so when I check the "iTunes Music Library.xml" on my
laptop the location reference (path) point to any
song point to P:\My Music\iTunes\iTunes Music\... . . . .
I could import the music files on the mini, that is not
a problem, but I don't want to loose the playlist and other
info about the songs.
Moving/Coping the library file "*.xml" I don't think would work since the reference to the network drive on the
new Mini, start with "smb:/... ... " so iTunes
will not find any song.
Any ideas on how to do it?
Does a manual "search and replace" all the "P:\My Music\iTunes\iTunes Music\" referece work?
Thanks.
JCC

Hi There;
Thanks but when there is a problem, when you import you don't get the
rating for the songs.
IF I just move the whole iTunes folder,
When you check the iTunes Music Library.xml
you find that in the Mini box, the location key points to:
<key>Location</key><string>file://localhost/Volumes/FAM-DIR-1/My%20Music/iTunes/iTunes%20Music/Armik/Rubia/ 01%20Rubia.mp3</string>
In the windows box:
<key>Location</key><string>file://localhost/P:/My%20Music/iTunes/iTunes%20Music/Armik/Rubia/01%20Track%2001 .mp3/</string>
So it will not find the media file.
Any other ideas?
What is the function of the iTunes Library.itl file?
Thanks for any help.

  • Import library and playlists from Windows Media Player without duplicates

How do I import all the music and playlists from Windows Media Player into iTunes without creating duplicates?
I add the folder containing all my music to iTunes and all my music arrives nicely. I begin importing playlists and the playlist comes over with all the songs duplicated in my library. Most of my songs are on playlists but some are not.
After adding the music folder (approx 7000 songs) then all the playlists, my iTunes library now contains over 13,000 songs. The increase is due to the duplicates being created as the playlists are added.
If I skip adding the music folder and just add the playlists I get most of my music without as many duplicates but I am missing the songs which are not on any playlist. Thanks.

If it' sprotectged WMA files, no you can't add them.
If they are plain WMA (like RIPped from a CD) you can File -> Add to library and iTunes will import and convert them.

  • Only migrate select files/apps from TM to new iMac?

I'm getting a new intel iMac in a few days and would prefer to just do a fresh startup with it and be able to pick and choose which files and applications I want to transfer to the new iMac from Time Machine. Is this possible? I've searched, but only found information about doing a complete migration from TM and nothing about only migrating certain things over.

I recently did just the same thing, but I simply migrated everything so I do not know if it's possible to pick and choose, however, it may well be.
On the other hand, you can always just migrate everything and then uninstall or delete what you don't need after the new Mac is up and running.
One caveat: Be sure to deauthorize iTunes on your old Mac before the switchover, and deactivate Adobe apps if you have them, then reauthorize and/reactivate from the new Mac.
I made sure all my apps and system were completely updated before migrating. Worked seamlessly.

  • How to transfer playlists from windows to a Mac

My Windows PC recently crashed and I bought a Mac as a replacement (great purchase).  I have copied my Itunes music library to the Mac (from a backup) successfully but cannot restore my playlists.  I tried plugging in my ipod & ipad to export/import the playlists but when I import the playlist is says that certain songs are missing and what appears in the copied playlist are some very different songs from the original playlist.  Any ideas how I can copy a playlist from an ipod/ipad back to a Mac in these circumstances without having to manually rebuild them.  Thanks

Do you have the .xml and itunes library files from your old computer in the itunes folder ?? use those to replace the new ones and you should be just fine.

  • How do I move my PlayLists from old to new Mac?

Just got a new Mac with Lion on it.
I have moved my iTunes Library collection over from old computer to new one.
But, how can I move all my old 'PlayLists' from my other machine to my new one as I don't want to spend days re-making them all?
    Thanks

The iTunes Library.itl file is a database of the songs in your library and the playlists you've created. Some song-specific data is saved in this file. If you delete the file, iTunes creates a new, empty copy when you open the application, but any playlists, song ratings, comments, or other information you created is lost.
Find the file on your old Mac and copy it to your new Mac.

  • How to transfer playlist from windows xp to Mac

I purchased some songs in iTunes on a Windows XP system. But my CD burner doesn't work,
so now I want to transfer the same playlist to my MacBook Pro so I can burn the CD on the Mac.
How do I transfer iTunes Playlist from a Windows XP computer to a MacBook Pro??
    thanks!!

Why don't you just transfer a copy fo the songs to the MacBook and recreate the playlist manually?
You see inside the iTunes folder on the PC (or the Mac) is a XML file that you can open in a text editor/notepad type program with "find and replace" ability.
As long as the songs are the same on both machines and organized the same in iTunes (Advanced preferences), their pathnames should be the same, all except of course everything BEFORE the   /TunesFolder/.....
So if you transfer a copy of this file on a USB key to the Mac from the PC and "find and replace" (Text Edit) all the partial pathnames from the PC to the Mac pathname. Then replace the Mac XML file in the iTunes folder with the one from the PC, when iTunes loads the file when it starts it will locate all your songs.
Your going to lose the playlists on the Mac natually, or you can backup the file before replacing and return it when your done?
    Making sense?

  • Having trouble transferring library and playlists from PC to new iMac

I just purchased a new iMac and I have imported my music via a hard drive from my PC to the Mac.  I have the library and the playlists in the Mac but I do not have the play counts.  I would also like to sync my iPhone to the iMac library but it wants to erase all the data on my iPhone and replace it with the stuff from the iMac library.  Am I doing something wrong?  How can I get my library from the PC to the Mac correctly?  Any help would be great!  Thanks!

Your phone is telling me you ended up not really moving the old library but somehow created a new library.  An i-device can only sync with one library at a time and your phone is reacting as though it never saw this library.
iTunes: How to move [or copy] your music [library] to a new computer [or another drive] - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4527 - a somewhat bewildering and not always easily understandable set of options.
Quick answer if you use iTunes' default preferences settings:  Copy the entire iTunes folder (and in doing so all its subfolders and files) intact to the other drive.  Open iTunes and immediately hold down the Option (alt) key (shift on Windows), then guide it to the new location of the iTunes Library.itl file in the moved iTunes folder.
For the record there's this reference for iTunes 11 but it really doesn't strike me as having the specifics you need. iTunes 11 for Mac: Move your library to another computer - http://support.apple.com/kb/PH12168

Migrate an iTunes library from one computer to another
These are two possible approaches that will normally work to move an existing library to a new computer.
    Method 1
Backup the library with this User Tip.
Deauthorize the old computer if you no longer want to access protected content on it.
Restore the backup to your new computer using the same tool used to back it up.
Keep your backup up-to-date in future.
    Method 2
Connect the two computers to the same network. Share your <User's Music> folder from the old computer and copy the entireiTunes library folder into the <User's Music> folder on the new one. Again, deauthorize the old computer if no longer required.
Both methods should give the new computer a working clone of the library that was on the old one, with ratings, play counts, playlists etc. preserved. As far as iTunes is concerned this is still the "home" library for your devices so you shouldn't have any issues with iTunes wanting to erase and reload.
I'd normally recommend method 1 since it establishes an ongoing backup for your library and unlike copying with Windows Explorer the process can be resumed if it is interrupted and it will continue to the next item if there are any read/access errors.
Note if you have iOS devices and haven't moved your contacts and calendar items across then you should create one dummy entry of each in your new profile and iTunes should  merge the existing data from the device.
If your media folder has been split out from the main iTunes folder you may need to do some preparatory work to make it easier to move. See Make a split library portable.
Should you be in the unfortunate position where you are no longer able to access your original library or a backup then then seeRecover your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device for advice on how to set up your devices with a new library with the maximum preservation of data.

Connect the new phone to the computer and iTunes, then sync your library. I'm guessing that you have been syncing the old phone in the past, which would keep your library updated.
