Migrating old account to new Macbook Pro

I got a nice new Macbook Pro (2010 version) with the i7 processor. I had to get a new cable to migrate my information from my old Macbook Pro (2006?)so I performed the migration the next day. The computer ran fine for several days until I rebooted it. All I got was part way through the boot and gray shadowing came down the screen and the message to force shut down the computer came up.
The computer could boot into safe mode. Tried to reinstall the system with no luck. Hardware test showed the computer was fine. Started in verbose mode <command-v>, which seemed to show that "com.bresink.driver.BRESINKx86Monitoring(3.0) was the culprit.
I found that in /Library/StartupItems and removed it. Computer started fine!
I think that file is associated with the iStat widget and is not compatible with the new processors. I hope this post saves someone else all the worry that I went through

That file has nothing to do with iStat Pro — it's part of Marcel Bresink's *Hardware Monitor* utility. I suspect you probably had an outdated version of it that was incompatible with your new machine or its OS.

Use the Office for Mac and ignore using Parallels for that. If you have PC only apps you have to run that are MS Windows only then consider Parallels. Just transfer your main PC, using Migration Assistant.  If you don't know how then simply read over Pondini's article called Lion or Mountain Lion Setup Assistant tips and look for the section on migrating from a PC. Millions have done what you are about to, it's far from leading edge these days, if you go to an Apple Store to purchase they will offer this as a service, something you might be interested in.

Time Machine or other disk (Target Disk mode makes it look like an external HD).

I just purchased a new Macbook Pro. Upon transferring files from an old Macbook via a backup and Time machine, the startup screen on the new Macbook Pro now  just shows white and a spinning disk. I can't even get a normal desktop.
1.New Macbook Pros do not have installation disks in the box. How do I get back to the welcome setup screen and start over when the migration did not work?

  • Trouble with using WoW on Mutable User Accounts with new MacBook Pro

My son just got a new MacBook Pro*. I installed WoW on his account and created an account for me; both are admin accounts. He can startup WoW just fine, but when I start the Launcher, I get a message that the launcher can't download information about the next patch, and to check my network. If I launch the game directly, the icon just bounces on the dock and then quits.
I have checked the permissions and they look good.
    The console log reads:
    11/18/10 12:48:40 PM Firewall[58] Launcher is listening from 0.0.0.0:9112 proto=6
    11/18/10 12:48:43 PM Launcher[490] nRet = 1
    OR without the firewall
    11/18/10 12:55:58 PM Launcher[544] nRet = 1

I have posted to the Mac Tech support forum, and heads are being scratched. I was wondering if 10.6 was different from 10.5 with regard to mutable users. NOTE that WoW will only work on intel based macs now. so this poor tired old box is done for.
Besides, as I hear it, it is a legacy machine now.

  • Migrated iPhoto content to new MacBook Pro,  but can't get '11

    Hi there,
I migrated my iPhoto content from my old laptop to my new one, the new one has OSX 10.6.7, but somehow I seem to have migrated iPhoto v8.1.2 also. iPhoto '11 should be part of 10.6.7, right? iPhoto '11 cannot be found on my new computer, did one cancel the other?
My hubby did exactly the same thing, migrated his old iPhoto content to his new MacBook Pro and he has iPhoto '11. I have tried to download it but it seems that it's too big to download, it requires a physical disc. My computer came with the software already loaded.
If anyone can give me any pointers on how to fix this I'd be so grateful.
    Thanks,

How did you migrate the iPhoto content?
As to iPhoto version - iPhoto does not come with any OS - it comes on new computers and can be purchased as part of iLife or in the App store
reinstall iPhoto - go to your receipts folder ("Your hard drive" ==> library ==> receipts) and remove any iPhoto receipts and reinstall from the restore disks that came with your computer - do a custom install of bundled software only

  • How to transfer Address Book from old iMac to new MacBook Pro?

I will soon be getting a MacBook Pro 15" Intel Core i5 with Snow Leopard and want to transfer my Address Book from my old 2003 iMac flat 15" panel running 10.4.11. What is the best way to do that? Is there a particular file or folder that I can copy onto a flash drive to transfer to the new computer? Or can I use my Mobile Me Backup that is on my external drive (or on CD) to do it even though the Backup on the new computer would be a newer version from the older Backup that has the data? I would like to avoid having to use the Migration Assistant if I can, since it looks like that is designed to transfer whole categories of files (like all "files and folders", etc.), which I don't want to do. Thanks in advance for the help.

When I bought my new MacBook Pro, the sales person showed me how to do the V-card method that you suggested. I tried it at home, and it worked. I have been worrying for years about the best way to do this, so was very relieved to find such a simple method. David Pogue in the Tiger Missing Manual also mentioned another tip which I used: he said to select all the address entries you want to transfer (in my case it was all of them) and then just drag the whole lot out onto the desktop. A V-card icon appeared that said: "Name of Person plus 344 others". I then copied that to a flash drive and then onto the new computer desktop. I then dragged it into the Address Book window. As you said it was done in a matter of seconds. Thank you so much!

  • Transfer iTunes Library and iPhone Sync data from old iMac to new Macbook Pro

    Hi,
I bought a macbook pro in September last year, previous to this I had an iMac. This has all my music and iTunes stored on it.
Is there a way to transfer my iTunes over to my new Macbook Pro and sync my iPhone as if my phone thinks it's the same computer, so I don't have to restore my phone or set it up as a new one.
    Thanks.

    Yes.
Simply copy the entire /Music/iTunes folder from old computer to /Music/ on new computer.

  • How do i transfer songs from my old iPod to new macbook pro?

I was wondering how I can transfer my song library on my old Ipod, 2nd Gen touch, to my new macbook pro? any help would be greatly appriciated. Thanks.

  • Importing iTunes library from old powerbook to new macbook pro

What is the best way to import my old itunes library (from my 10.4.7 powerbook) to my new macbook pro?
    Thanks!

I'm still having some trouble, can someone give me guidance? Here is what I did:
    1. Connected old mac (PowerBook G4) to new mac (MacBook Pro) via firewire 800 and target mode.
    2. Located "iTunes Music" folder on old Mac and pulled the entire folder into "iTunes Music" on the new Mac.
    3. I restarted.
    4. iTunes didn't find the new music, it does find the one song I've purchased using the new Mac. I think this makes sense, because now the folder structure has an embedded "iTunes Music" folder (from the old Mac) in my new mac's "iTunes Music" folder. The structure looks like:
    -iTunes Music
----[folder for the one song I've purchased on the new mac]
----iTunes Music (this is the folder from the old mac)
---------[folders of music from the old mac]
    5. So I went into the iTunes Music folder I just imported, selected all the music, and copied it one level up.
    6. The result is on my new mac, my "iTunes Music" folder now contains all the music from the old mac, plus the one song I've puchased using the new mac.
    7. I restarted my new mac. Restarted iTunes, but still the only song that's recognized is the one I've already purchased. The others aren't showing.
    8. I've gone into preferences/advanced and confirmed I'm pointing at the right target folder.
Any thoughts on what I'm doing wrong here?

I have a five year old imac that I use for photoshop work.  My new macbook pro is so much faster processing big files, I can see the Imac's days are numbered.  Can I use the monitor from the imac with the new Macbook?  How would I connect the two?
