This task is more of a SAN admin . So you have to coordinate with the Storage folks to get it resolve with zero downtime.. There will be resolutions available with Storage vendors.. The migration is regarding whole data available on Old storage box to new Storage box. So you wont be getting any headaches for carrying out that stuff..Cheers!

  • Oracle 10g RAC Database Migration from SAN to New SAN.

    Hi All,
Our client has implemented a Two Node Oracle 10g R2 RAC on HP-UX v2. The Database is on ASM and on HP EVA 4000 SAN. The database size in around 1.2 TB.
Now the requirement is to migrate the Database and Clusterware files to a New SAN (EVA 6400).
SAN to SAN migration can't be done as the customer didn't get license for such storage migration.
My immediate suggestion was to connect the New SAN and present the LUNs and add the Disks from New SAN and wait for rebalance to complete. Then drop the Old Disks which are on Old SAN. Exact Steps To Migrate ASM Diskgroups To Another SAN Without Downtime. (Doc ID 837308.1).
Clients wants us to suggest alternate solutions as they are worried that presenting LUNs from Old SAN and New SAN at the same time may give some issues and also if re-balance fails then it may affect the database. Also they are not able to estimate the time to re-balance a 1.2 TB database across Disks from 2 different SAN. Downtime window is ony 48 hours.
    One wild suggestion was to:
    1. Connect the New SAN.
    2. Create New Diskgroups on New SAN from Oracle RAC env.
    3. Backup the Production database and restore on the same Oracle RAC servers but on New Diskgroups.
    4. Start the database from new Diskgroup location by updating the spfile/pfile
    5. Make sure everything is fine then drop the current Diskgroups from Old SAN.
Will the above idea work in Production env? I think there is a lot of risks in doing the above.
Customer does not have Oracle RAC on Test env so there isn't any chance of trying out any method.
    Any suggestion is appreciated.
    Rgds,
    Thiru.

If your customer is not entrusting on ASM. So Oracle Support can answer all doubt.

ASM Supports many Terabytes, if you need to migrate 3 Database with 20TB each using this way described above would be very laborious .. .. So add and remove Luns online is one feature that must work.
Take the approval from Oracle support and do this work using the ASM Rebalance.

  • Migrating old account to new Macbook Pro

I got a nice new Macbook Pro (2010 version) with the i7 processor. I had to get a new cable to migrate my information from my old Macbook Pro (2006?)so I performed the migration the next day. The computer ran fine for several days until I rebooted it. All I got was part way through the boot and gray shadowing came down the screen and the message to force shut down the computer came up.
The computer could boot into safe mode. Tried to reinstall the system with no luck. Hardware test showed the computer was fine. Started in verbose mode <command-v>, which seemed to show that "com.bresink.driver.BRESINKx86Monitoring(3.0) was the culprit.
I found that in /Library/StartupItems and removed it. Computer started fine!
I think that file is associated with the iStat widget and is not compatible with the new processors. I hope this post saves someone else all the worry that I went through

That file has nothing to do with iStat Pro — it's part of Marcel Bresink's *Hardware Monitor* utility. I suspect you probably had an outdated version of it that was incompatible with your new machine or its OS.

  • Migrating old information to new laptop with new drive

I tried searching for this but also wanted a specific answer.
Here's what happened: my old Macbook (first version, from 2006) failed, but I had all its information backed up on to a Time Machine drive. The drive was a firewire drive. When my 2006-era Macbook failed, I bought a new one. However, the new laptop did not have a firewire port. I used the laptop for a few months until I could afford a new, USB external drive. Now, I've got the new computer (with some new information but no firewire port), my old firewire hard drive -- with info, and a new USB hard drive, that is completely blank.
What I intended to do was find a Mac at my university's library with both a USB and firewire drive and copy all the information to my new drive from the old one. From that point, can I just use migration assistant to merge my new Macbook and the old Macbook's information? Will it make more sense to load any new documents on my Macbook onto a flash drive, wipe its hard drive, and restore from the old Time Machine backup then add the information from the flash drive?
I don't want to have two separate accounts, either.
Thanks for your help with this annoying dilemma! I miss all my old music, photos, and videos...

    plourens wrote:
Thanks for the information. Instead of using a flash drive, would it work for me to partition the drive and place any new information on the second partition of my external hard drive?
Sure (if there's room). See #3 in [Formatting, Partitioning, Verifying, and Repairing Disks|http://web.me.com/pondini/AppleTips/DU.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of the +Using Snow Leopard+ forum).
If there isn't enough room to make the partition, but enough total space, you can put the files in the same partition as your backups.
You must be careful, though, as that isn't generally a good idea. You must leave enough room for Time Machine to operate; it doesn't need a lot, perhaps a hundred MBs, but if you fill it past that, your backups will crash before they can start deleting old backups to make room for new ones.
Similarly, do not add anything that way while a backup is running.
And, be very careful not to move, change, or delete anything in your backups via the Finder, as that can corrupt them.

  • Migrating old macbook to new iMac

How do I migrate only applications to a new iMac? I don't want years of old system files filling up my new machine.

Migration, using the steps in Pondini's Setup New Mac guide allow only selecting applications. However, if you fail to migrate your user account, you'll be starting from scratch, resetting all your network and user preferences. BTW, using the Setup Assistant doesn't copy ANY old system files to the new machine. As for unused apps, delete them from the old machine, using either their uninstaller apps or simply dragging them to the trash and then emptying it. IMO, you're overthinking the process.

  • Migrate old G4 to new Mac Pro

I'm helping a customer set up a new Mac Pro. They have an old G4 and would like to migrate Photoshop and Illustrator files to the new system.
I'm aware of the Firewire cable + Target Disk mode, and I know it could be done over ethernet as well.
I'm wondering about simply opening up the G4, taking the hard disk out and putting in an empty bay on the Mac Pro. Obviously we wouldn't try to boot from it (it has Tiger) but my question is simply one of drive compatibility. Would the new Mac Pro be able to use the HDD from the old G4?
Just looking for painless, easy and cheap. I have replaced HDD many times so that's not an issue, I just don't know if it will work.
Thanks in advance for any and all assistance.

"...my question is simply one of drive compatibility. Would the new Mac Pro be able to use the HDD from the old G4?..."
No. Not cleanly at all. The Mac Pro's use SATA drives while the G4 would have IDE drives. They are different interfaces. You could potentially get an adapter, something like this to get your connections worked out. However, this issue is still going to be where to physically put the G4's drive inside the Mac Pro. An SATA drive would fit into a bracket, and simply slide right into all the appropriate connections (Power & Data).
But the adapter card you'd have to install to make the IDE drive work, will also prevent it from working as well. Hope that makes sense.
An alternative may be to buy an external Firewire enclosure, ready for an IDE (or "ATA") drive and put the old G4 drive there. Simple and clean - guaranteed to work.
An internal solution does not seem possible to me.

  • How to Migrate old PPC to new iMac

I'm getting a new iMac. I currently have a Power Mac Dual 867 mhz, Mac OS X (10.5.8). What's the best way to connect the 2 machines? I have watched some videos on you tube that say to use a firewire cable. Do I need to have a special cable ( 400 to 800). Can I use an ethernet cable?
    TIA
    Rich

I'd recommend using Setup Assistant, it's the most simple method of migrating information. Setup Assistant will start when you turn on the new Mac for the first time so that is the best opportunity. Please read Pondini's Lion Setup Assistant tips so you are prepared. If your old Mac has a Firewire connection then you will need a cable like this one from Amazon. You can find these locally at Best Buy, Radio Shack or your local computer store and of course Amazon. Be sure to get the cable  prior to turning on the new Mac otherwise your migration won't be nearly as smooth. Because your old Mac is so old you will not be able to use any of the PPC based apps you have because Lion will not run PPC based apps. You should inventory your Apps by opening System Profiler on your old Mac, click Applications on the left and then look in the Kind column. If they say PPC then you know it will not work. If it says Universal then you're OK and I doubt you will have any that say Intel.

  • Migrating old iMac to new one via external hard drive with Time Machine

I was led to believe this was going to be easy!  Using the migration wizard in Utilities I was hoping to copy everything over via my external hard drive however it told me that it couldn't do it because the name already existed so muggins here gave it a new name.  It all ran smoothly, even all my email stuff etc etc.  Then Time Machine told me it couldn't back up any more because there wasn't enough space on the hard drive.  What I now have is two computers on one which I don't want and I don't know how to get it back and then solve the problem of having the same name on the back-up as the computer - not sure if this is making sense.  Can anyone help me please?
    thanks

Have a look at Pondini's Time Machine guide that might help you get back on track:
    http://pondini.org/OSX/MigrationProblems.html
I know hindsight is a wonderful thing but Setup Assistant is the better option for transferring your data.
If all else fails, you can always erase the drive, re-install the OS as if it's new out of the box and use Setup Assistant. Hopefully that won't be necessary and Pondini will see you right.

  • Migrate old keychain to new computer

    Hi all
I'm preparing to buy a Mac Mini to replace my sadly moribund iBook G3. One thing that I am quite concerned about is that my keychain should be successfully migrated, since it contains crucial password information that is not stored elsewhere.
Can anyone confirm for me (preferably by pointing to a kbasedoc or other official piece of documentation) that, in my new install of 10.4 on the Mini I will be able to copy across my user keychain from the G3 and have it work without further changes? (i.e. have it 'just work' ) Assume in this case the the Uesr accounts & passwords on the two machines will be different.
As an additional/related query, I will need to access the iBook's HD through FW Target Disk mode (the iBook's screen is dead) - will there be issues accessing my user data while logged on as a different user on a different machine..?
    iBook 800 32MBVRAM   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

There are no KB documents addressing the issue w/Intel-based machnes. However, the KB docs do focus on migrating w/Tiger. I don't think you'll have any trouble. That said, protect yourself by copying the ~/Library/Keychains/login.keychain and /Library/Keychains/system.keychain to another drive or CD and you can always copy it to the new machine. Additionally, I recommend using your current username/password on the new machine to avoid all those alleged problems. As long as you can hook up the G3 iBook to the new machine via FW, copy the ~/Library/Keychains/login.keychain and /Library/Keychains/system.keychain to the new machine before transferring via the Migration Assistant. Also copy the Safari and Mail (if you use it) folders in ~/Library.

  • Could you provide sccripts to add old SAN disk groups to New SAN

    Hi,
I'll giv u a brief about my setup. It is 2 node RAC connected to a SAN storage and size of DB is 500GB on Windows 2003. So now they r having a new storage box with 3TBand they asked to migrate this entire setup to new one. So please provide me the detailed doc on this.
I've to migrate Database from OLD SAN to New SAN. Some guys helped me the solution, but i couldnt get clearly. They have told me that
Simply add new LUNs to the existing disk groups. Drop the old SAN LUNs in the disk groups(this merely marks the LUNs to be dropped). Issue a re balance common to move and re stripe the data from the OLD SAN LUNs onto new SAN LUNs.once this operation is completed , ASM will Drop old LUNs from Disk groups and these LUNs can be physically removed. All this can happen with the instance running -it will be obvious of the underlying storage system change being made.
So please provide me the scripts for the above with detailed process how we need to do that and i ma the only person DBA in organisation but i am not much aware about ASM. So please help me out to complete this task.
Even i am new DBA...pls help me out

    Hi
Please drop me an email in the below given email id so that I can send you the note which I compiled just now for this.
There is another question also from my end.....
Where is OCR and VD stored ? That also will be in the old storage right ? If that also needs migration to the new storage, then there are some additional steps to migrate OCR and VD.
But for that you will need a small downtime.

    Mahesh.

  • Migrating agent to new SAN.

We have 10g (10.1.0.4) agent installed on server XYZ in file system /u01/oem. We are starting to migrate databases to the new SAN and I need to know the process to migrate agent to /u02/oem on new SAN. Is it possible to migrate agent or must I drop the server from the console and add it back to the console after reinstalling the agent? This process would work but I'd lose 30 days of collected data.
    Thanks in advance,

    Hi,
since your hostname will be still the same, there should be no problem. Stop your agent, migrate your database, and change all paths in targets.xml as necessary. A reset of the agent might not be bad.
It's a great pleasure for my sysadmins to move a database from one host to another ;-(( in this cases I have to drop the database from grid control and re-install it.
Perhaps someone know how to avoid the loss of data and user-defined metrics.
    Best regards

  • Move OCR and Vote Disk to a new SAN

    Hi,
Can you guys help me with some links/documents for moving OCR and Vote disk files from old SAN to new SAN.
Both SAN will have ocfs2 formatted 3 partitions on which ocr and votedisk will be placed (normal redundancy).
    Oracle version 11g R2,
    OS linux 5.5
    RAC nodes : 2
    Datafiles on ASM
    OCR/Votedisk on ocfs2

Thanks for the reply, but all the examples were showing either ocfs2 to ASM or raw to ocfs2. could you just point out the high level steps for moving 3 ocr & votedisk files from one san to another(ocfs to ocfs).
    Hi Ajay,
Steps will be same . It doesnt matter whether it is raw to ocfs2 or ocfs to ocfs.
There will be change only how do you assign storage for OCR/voting disk.
I have another doubt that, i already have 3 ocr files, can i add more ocr files pointing to another mount point? the same goes with votedisk.
You can use replace option so there is no need to add 4th OCR disk.
i found steps in one of the website: i have few doubts in it, could any one clarify it...All the steps seems to be fine.
    Moving OCR
    1) create mount point(new san - /u05) in all nodes
    2) precreate ocr files in new mount points (i am not sure how to do it? is it just touch and filename, its a ocfs2 file system)on ocfs you need to create file as below :
    dd if=/dev/zero of=/ocfs/OCR/ocrnew.dbf bs=1M count=128
Also I would suggest to have a look at :

That's the problem.  Apple doesn't make it clear that you should transfer when the new Mac starts up, not later on with Migration Assistant.
which told me to enter a new name . I had the new computer and old with same name. I called the new user my name with word "old" so not the same name as old Mac.
The problem isn't the names, it's the (mostly hidden) User ID number (UID).  See the pink box in Problems after using Migration Assistant for an explanation of what happened.
Your best bet is to use one of the workarounds (probably #4) in the green box there, to re-transfer your account.  It will have exactly the same name and permissions as before.
If you want to change the name, you can, but it takes a minor finagle. Post back if you want to do that.

  • Migrate from server core 2008 r2 hyper-v with failover cluster volumes to server core 2012 r2 hyper-v with failover cluster volumes on new san hardware

We are getting ready to migrate from server core 2008 r2 hyper-v with failover cluster volumes on an iscsi san to server core 2012 r2 hyper-v with failover cluster volumes on a new iscsi san.
I've been searching for a "best practices" article for this but have been coming up short.  The information I have found either pertains to migrating from 2008 r2 to 2012 r2 with failover cluster volumes on the same hardware, or migrating
to different hardware without failover cluster volumes.
If there is anyone out there that has completed a similar migration, it would be great to hear any feedback you may have on your experiences.
Currently, my approach is as follows:
    1. Configure new hyper-v with failover cluster volumes on new SAN with new 2012 r2 hostnodes and 2012 r2 management server
    2. Turn off the virtual machines on old 2008 r2 hyper-v hostnodes
    3. Stop the VMMS service on the 2008 r2 hostnodes
    4. copy the virtual machine files and folders over to the new failover cluster volumes
    5. Import vm's into server 2012 r2 hyper-v.
Any feedback on the opertain I have in mind would be helpful.
    Thank you,
    Rob

    Hi Rob,
Yes , I agree with that "file copy " can achieve migration.
Also you can try "copy cluster wizard " :
