Migrating photos from Tiger to Mavericks

I'm attempting to migrate over 4,000 photos from Tiger 10.4.11 on my old G4 to my new iMac with Mavericks 10.9.1.  I lose all of my keywords, events, etc.  Is there any way to get around this?  Thanks in advance for your help!

Does this involve iPhoto in some way?
If so:
To move an iPhoto Library to a new machine:
Link the two Macs together: there are several ways to do this: Wireless Network,Firewire Target Disk Mode, Ethernet, or even just copy the Library to an external HD and then on to the new machine...
But however you do choose to link the two machines...
Simply copy the iPhoto Library from the Pictures Folder on the old Machine to the Pictures Folder on the new Machine.
Then launch iPhoto. That's it.
This moves photos, events, albums, books, keywords, slideshows and everything else.

  • Migrating mail from Tiger to Mavericks

I was getting ready to use Migration Assistant to migrate from a PowerPC G4 with OSX Tiger (10.4.11) to an iMac with Snow Leopard (OSX 10.6.8) when a pop-up came on the screen for a free update to Mavericks (OSX 10.9). Without thinking of the ramifications of doing this, I ran the update. Now I find out that Migration Assistant in Mavericks is not compatible with Migration Assistant in Tiger. Also, I did not turn on the Time Machine so cannot revert back to Snow Leopard.
Since I cannot use Migration Assistant, how do I migrate the Tiger mail into Mavericks? I tried importing mailbox from within Mavericks and it imports but does not look right.
    Any help is appreciated.
    Thanks.

Start with http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4889. You could wipe the iMac, reinstall SL, update it, and then migrate from the G4.

Hi. Migrated photos from Photoshop Album to Photoshop Elements 13. Lost all tags Any ideas?

I'm not sure but it sounds a lot like the question I posed to the forum a little later today.  It may be that the newer versions of PSE are not compatible with transfering all the Categories, Sub Categories and Tags from versions up to PSE 10.  I am presently using PSE 10 because I couldn't figure out how to save all the organization I have put into Elements over the past 10 years or so.
I'm hoping for an answer to my question.

  • Migrating Photos from DigiKam to LR

Did anyboy ever migrate photos from digiKam to LR?
Unfortunatelly the only thing I miss in DigiKam is a good Raw processing, so I chose to move to LR.
How can I import those photos (NEF + jpeg, incl. Tags in XMP sidecar) ?
LR seems to ignore the Tags in the xmp file even when I do "Import Metadata from file"

  • Migrating photos from iPhoto 4 to iPhoto 9?

    Greetings, All,
My wife and I have two new iMacs, and we are attempting to migrate thousands of photos from our old eMacs, which used iPhoto 4, to our new machines. We also have two laptops, a Mac Book Pro, and a Macbook, both of which use iPhoto 9. We each also have 320GB GTec external hard drives.
What is the best way to migrate our old iPhoto libraries into the new iPhoto to merge with the photos we already have in the new iPhoto? Thanks, very much, for any suggestions you can offer us! Take care, and God Bless!
    Every Good Wish,
    Doc Mark

First you need to convert the iPhoto 4 Libraries to iPhoto 09:
Link the old and new Macs together: there are several ways to do this: Wireless Network, Firewire Target Disk Mode, Ethernet, or even just copy the Library to an external HD and then on to the new machine...
But however you do choose to link the two machines...
Simply copy the iPhoto Library from the Pictures Folder on the old Machine to the Desktop on the new Machine. (so that it won't overwrite the existing libraries.)
Hold down the option (or alt) key key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and point it at the iPhoto 4 library on the desktop. This will then convert it to the 09 format.
This moves photos, events, albums, books, keywords, slideshows and everything else.
Then use the paid version ($20) of iPhoto Library Manager to merge the Libraries. It's the only way to merge libraries.

  • Problems migrating accounts from tiger to leopard

I have been attempting to migrate my company's open directory from tiger server over to leopard. the method i have taken to do this is to use ldapsearch to retrieve the ldif from the old directory. and ldapadd to add it to the new directory. Before importing into the new, i went thru and replaced the authAuthority strings in the ldif with the key from the new server via "mkpassdb -key" the accounts appear in WGM, however if i browse to an account i only see "Basic", "Privileges", and "Advanced" as options. I can however get all the tabs to show up if i kill WGM, relaunch it, and look at an account. but after i look at one, they all revert to showing me only the 3 tabs. I have one account that existed in the new directory before the import and it behaves as normal.
since the import i have also noticed alot of this in the logs:
    Feb 11 16:14:41 finder slapd[40]: <= bdbsubstringcandidates: (authAuthority) index_param failed (18)
    Feb 11 16:15:20 finder slapd[40]: <= bdbsubstringcandidates: (authAuthority) index_param failed (18)

    Hi
Archive the LDAP Database, do the upgrade/install to Leopard. Make sure your DNS config is the same as it was when the server was 10.4.11. Spend time on this and test this thoroughly. In fact don’t start any other service until you have this as it should be. Promote to OD Master, use the same details for the Directory Administrator (diradmin) account that you used before and restore the LDAP Database. All Users, Groups, Computer Lists, MCX and passwords should be retained.
The manual is correct in saying that Users passwords are not retained when exporting from WGM. However it should not be a problem (if the first method does not work) to select all relevant users and define a policy forcing users to change their passwords next time they login. Saves you the finger work. You could also inform your users what you wish them to use or the form the passwords should take.
    Hope this helps, Tony

  • Migrate from tiger to mavericks

My friend has Tiger on an intel iMac and she is considering buying a new iMac, probably after Mavericks is out. Will the migration utility copy her files (mostly pics) from the Tiger Mac to the Mavericks Mac?

YUP!  That is if Migration Assistant is also included in Maverick which no one except Apple knows!

  • Migrating photos from Adobe Photoshop Album to Aperture

A while ago I posted to see if anyone had done this but got no replies. I have now managed to migrate my photos and most importantly kept the tags.
The first issue was that Adobe Photoshop Album kept its tags in an inaccesible proprietary database. This was resolved by downloading a 30 day trial version of Photoshop Elements 5 (PC). It appears that Adobe have actually built Photoshop Album in to Photoshop Elements (without telling any of us paid up Album users!). It is all there in PE5. What PE5 adds is an entry in 'File' menu called 'Write Tag and Properties Info to Photos'.
This 'writing' puts the tag information into the keyword IPTC field within the picture file itself.
It was then a simple case of making a backup from the file menu and backing up the whole library on to DVD(s).
In aperture simply Import images from the file menu, select the DVD and all the images are imported - tags and all.
The only one gripe about this process is that PE5 randomly misses out adding tag information to the files. There doesn't appear to be any logic to which files had no keyword information added at all. However, this is a better option than having to re-keyword everything again.
I hope this help some of you.

MacPro 2.66   Mac OS X (10.4.10)   9Gb RAM Dual Dell 24" QuickCam Fusion

Just to point out that this will not work for raw files, since Adobe for some reason decided against using XMP sidecar files for the organizer, the way they do for PE/mac, bridge, etc.

  • Transfer a photo from Macbook running Mavericks to iOS8 iphone

I've upgraded my iPhone 5S to iOS8 without realising that iPhoto is no longer supported from my MacbookAir running Mavericks. Had I know I would have delayed the upgrade. Today I found out that I can't sync any of my iPhoto albums to my iPhone. This is problematic because I need to share some photo folders between my devices in order to post Business photos on Instagram and Vivino on my iPhone. How can I transfer any photos now from my Macbook to my iPhone? As an afterthought I wondered if  I could Airdrop some photo files to my iPhone however, it seems that Airdrop is also not supported from Mac to iPhone. I thought about reverting to iOS7 however my latest iCloud backup for my iPhone is now only an iOS8 Backup. Any advice would be appreciated.

Problem is resolved - I connected phone to macbook pro, resetting my sync settings to include sync via wi-fi,  and  ejected phone; for a while, nothing happened but  after a while, the    contacts newly entered on the macbook pro did  finally show up on phone - so thanks for advice but problem is moot.  And  i am not so sure I would have wanted to delete all my contacts from the phone and trust the iCloud back up -- on the other hand the force- code contacts and re-set phone suggestions look like good ones.
    Many thanks, anyway.

  • How do I migrate photos from iPhoto into Lightroom 5?

Okay. I've got all my photos organised in iPhoto, but I've seen the writing on the wall about Apple discontinuing iPhoto.
So I've taken out a subscription for Creative Cloud 2014 including Photoshop & Lightroom 5.
My question is:- How do I migrate all my photos including organising them into Events / Collections from iPhoto to Lightroom 5?
I've seen a tutorial that recommended downloading a free trial of Photoshop Elements 12 to use that as a sort of 'missing link' between the two apps, but it didn't work in that it didn't keep my photos organised in Events / Collections. I just ended up with a load of esoterically generically named folders which made no sense.
Surely there must be a way, shouldn't there?

Have you tried some of the online articles?

  • Problems using Migration Assistant from Tiger to Snow Leopard

I want to scavenge files and apps from a Power Mac G4 (PowerMac3,5) running Tiger 10.4.11 before I turn it out to pasture. Most of them were migrated years ago to another system and have been updated and upgraded over the years, but a few apps have no modern equivalent. Now I want to do one last "pull" to pick up anything left behind all those years ago, particularly apps for which the install discs are in deep storage at best and possibly discarded.
I'm trying to use Migration Assistant in a nearly virgin Snow Leopard 10.6.8 system (installed fresh from 10.6.3 retail optical disc, updated over the network, lightly tested). It has a single admin account, no other user accounts.
Possible complicating factors: the Snow Leopard system is Server running under Parallels 10.1.4 on Yosemite 10.10.2 on an Early 2008 Mac Pro (MacPro3,1) with  third-party USB3 controller in a PCI slot.
At present, I'm using a portable drive with both FW and USB interfaces as an intermediate storage (FW on the G4 to clone the system drive, USB on the Mac Pro to connect it to the virtual machine). SL sees the drive just fine, can copy files from it, and can even run apps from it. Migration Assistant sees the drive and offers to migrate from it.
    Two problems:
    1. No matter what user(s) I select for migration, Migration Assistant tells me it is a duplicate account. Proposing an account name never used before does not help. As a result, no user files can be migrated. (Obviously, I could copy them in other ways, but I think MA should do a more thorough job.)
    2. Migration Assistant offers to migrate absolutely no applications. Even applications that SL will run from the drive cannot be migrated. (Some are PPC apps, but SL will run them via Rosetta. Others are Universal apps.)
Am I expecting too much of Migration Assistant?
Is the Migration Assistant shipped with SL Server (and updated through Software Update) not capable of running under SL Server?
Should SL MA refuse to migrate any applications from a Power Mac, even Universal applications?
    Am I missing something obvious?
Is there key information I have omitted?

Not sure what you meant by that statement.  Although this "principle" may be more important to you than the twenty bucks, I know that my time is worth more to me than your twenty bucks!
    What apps are you using?
    markwmsn wrote:
I was able to install Snow Leopard (client) in a partition, and it was able to migrate users and many applications from the G4 clone on the portable drive. Some of the apps even run.
Then I went back to my SL Server virtual machine and tried to migrate FROM the SL client partition. Migration Assistant showed the same symptoms as importing from the clone directly (no apps offered, bogus "dup user" errors). I am forced to conclude that either (a) Migration Assistant 3.0.4/1.1 is broken when run on SL Server or (b) my new SL Server installation is broken. I'm either going to have to boot back and forth to run the old apps or find their installation media and reinstall them in my SL Server virtual machine.
Even worse, I realized that one of the antique programs I still haven't dug everything out of is a Classic application that had to be kludged to survive Y2K!
    Thanks again, MIchaelLAX.
Anybody else have any clever ideas?

Here is a recent post I assembled for running Classic apps on Intel Macs:
With the newer Intel Macs, you have to run a Classic emulator such as SheepShaver, which requires you to extract the Mac ROMs from your older Classic Mac and then install Mac OS 9.
A related program is Chubby Bunny, which comes bundled with all of that included (google the term "Classic-On-Intel v 4.0.1 chubby bunny").

  • Migration Assistant from Tiger Mac to new Leopard MBP can't see disk

    Hi,
I just bought a new MacBook Pro and am trying to migrate from my Tiger-based (10.4.10) dual 1 GHz Mac (mirrored-drive door) desktop machine. The boot drive on the Tiger machine is actually partitioned into an emergency boot drive of a few GB and my main working drive ("Macintosh HD"). When I run Migration Assistant (MA) on my MBP (after connecting the 6-pin Firewire cable and restarting the Tiger Mac in target disk mode), the MBP sees only the emergency boot-up partition and not the main working partition from which I want to migrate.
I tried MA on my MBP connected to a different Mac with no HD partitions, and it sees "Macintosh HD" just fine, so I think all the new hardware is okay as well as the Firewire cable.
    Any ideas?
    -Eric

Thanks for the info. I do know something about this (being a HW engineer), but I would have thought that the IDE master/slave jumpers would affect all the partitions on the disk. Since my emergency-boot partition is visible, I take that to mean that the IDE master/slave jumper issue is a non-issue for me.
I don't know if this helps, but here's what Disk Utility reports about the disk (not the volumes residing on it):

I don't know how to determine from the above what the "first" partition would be. I don't know how to post an attachment here otherwise I'd show a screen shot, but when I got into Disk Utility's partition tab, the emergency-boot partition (called Clean Boot) shows up at the bottom of the space indicating all of the HD's space, and Macintosh HD shows above Clean Boot.
So what are my options? Can I repartition w/o loosing Macintosh HD (I'm willing to loose the other partition Clean Boot)? Any way to change the partition numbers?
I was thinking of cloning Macintosh HD to another HD and then migrating from that. Any experience with that?
    Thanks, Eric

  • Network Printing from Tiger to Mavericks

I have an older printer ... HP 940c ... that works fine and better than my newer printers.  I have this printer hooked up to my Mac Mini running Mavericks via USB.  This works fine using generic or HP Deskjet driver from that computer.
How do I print to that printer over a network from a Tiger (10.4.11) computer?  I tried using LPD, but couldn't seem to get it to work.  The location name seemed to work, but not the printer name.  I was able to see the Mac Mini on a menu using Windows printing, but I clicked on it and was asked for a username/password and my admin password didn't work.
    Got any ideas?
I'm not sure if the printer supports IP printing or not.  I c

Greg -- check the printer URL on your Tiger machine in the web interface.  My guess is that you will see the device URL contains "printers/Mavericks_queue".  That is what is working here and the only way I can get it to work.
C G -- Try adding "printers/" to the queue name when you set up the Tiger printer.  A screenshot of my setup is as follows:
As long as you are using a driver on Mavericds that is not identical to the one on Tiger (generic drivers may vary between systems), you will have to set up the Tiger queue as Generic PostScript Printer.
One thing not mentioned earlier in this thread is that printer sharing must be turned on on Mavericks and the printers you want to share must be selected on the Maverics machine.
If this gives you all that you want for your HP DeskJet 940C, fine.  If you want more control over the output, I would suggest using either the Gutenprint drivers or the HPIJS drivers for Mac OS X

  • How to properly migrate data from Lion to Mavericks?

I'm currently using a MacBook Pro running Mac OS X Lion 10.7.5, but I'm going to switch to OS X Mavericks since I'm getting a new MacBook Pro soon. So I'm facing the so-called "data migration" problem. I know Mac OS X comes with a useful tool called Migration Assistant, but I'd like only to transfer some of my personal data and get a clean installation of the operating system. In particular, I'm interested in my iTunes library, iPhoto library, my emails, browser bookmarks and my contacts and I'm not interested in transferring apps. Can you tell me the files and directories I need to save and if I'm going to get some compatibility issue with newer versions of iTunes, iPhoto, Mail and Address Book?
    Thank you.

Your most trouble free migration is using the Setup Assistant when you first turn on your new Mac.
At that point you have the oppurtunity to plug in the old machine for a seamless transfer.
"Setup Assistant opens the first time you start up your new Mac. It helps you enter your information about your network, and walks you through setting up a user account on your computer. If you don't use Setup Assistant to transfer information when you first setup your new Mac, you can do it later using Migration Assistant."
I do not recommend the Migration Assistant for trouble free.

  • Migrating photos from PC to MacBook - Does metadata come too?

I have approximately 12,000 photos on a PC that I want to transfer to my MacBook Pro. My concern primarily involves the "date taken" info for each photo. Will that data transfer from PC to Mac, allowing me to organize my photos by date without having to manually date each photo?

Assuming the date taken metadata is in the Exif metadata of the file there will be no problem.
But why not import 10 to see?
