MIGRATING PREVIOUS TIMEMACHINE BACKUPS TO A NEW TIMECAPSULE

Hi Can anybody help me with this? I am fully aware that anyone can copy a Sparsebundle (all my previous TimeCapsule backups) that is now archived on my USB external hardrive. & migrate it to a new larger capacity TimeCapsule , I have read lots of people have had success using either ( SUPERDUPER OR CARBONCOPYCLONER OR DISK UTILITY ) .
Can someone guide me what the best Application to use as I've successfully copied it using SUPERDUPER but I'm not clear/sure what the next steps are as all I'm trying to achieve is to see all my previous backups on the Timeline on my new 1TB TimeCapsule .
I will be more than grateful for any HELP. THANYOU

I do see the icon that looks like a drive with a wifi tree in blue & I have setup my new TC & named it the same as my previous 500Gb dual one early 2009 version. But I now have the latest new 1Tb model on Apple website.
Sorry when I do open that data folder. With Superduper you have to make sure the data folder is empty then start a backup until it shows a Sparsebundle image then switch it off then do the erase then copy from my EHDrive the old Sparsebundle image. & you have to mount the image you make that you switch TM off as soon as it shows a Sparsebundle then soon as it mounts a icon appears on desktop saying TMachine backups
Then with Superduper you copy your old Sparsebundle file to the TMachine backups destination that appears on desktop then wait hours for it to copy which it does successfully
Then it says once it's copied. You enter TIMEmachine & my old backups should show in the new timeline but it only shows. Today's backup? Then I click on the backups icon that mounted & it then shows 2folders with the same Sparsebundle file in the (my name archive folder with a backups.backupdb with nothing in it then the 2nd folder is called (backups.backupdb & has exactly the same items in it ,it has the my name archive with my previous Sparsebundle file & again the backup.backupsdb with nothing in it?
I'm not sure why everyone leaving comments on that article of how to copy from An EHDrive are getting it right & I can't seem too?
I must be doing something wrong? Somewhere. THANKYOU for helping me. So far .if you know how I can sort this out PLZE let me know. Many thanks. It's driving me crazy !

I want to make a TimeMachine backup in a new hard-drive I just bought. It says it has to erase the info but as the drive is new there's no info in it, so what it is going to be erased?
I had to format it after I bought it so that it could work with windows and Mac and I'm afraid that if I erase the info in the hard-drive, the format will also change. Is that possible to happen? Or the format will stay the same?
    Thank you

Do you want to continue to use it to share and store files between Windows and NTFS and Mac which uses HFS?
Maybe you need another drive. I would never have only one backup and one "live" data set.
you probably installed something, whether it is current or well supported or not, that came with the drive to allow writing to NTFS.
TimeMachine has to use HFS only and use Apple GPT (GUID) format.
sometimes erase changes a drive to GUID when you click on the raw hard drive name in Disk Utility. other times you can erase a volume and leave the partition format type as is. The wording use to be clearer when people knew when and how to initialize, format and setup a drive. And sometimes a message on the screen says it will be only launches Disk Utility and not to the PARTITION tab to make changes.
In addition to TimeMachine, having a clone of your system or data or both can be very useful as well. Drives fail.
And with a MacBook Air you probably have a smallish internal hard drive and might need to store media files and data on another drive to supplement the internal SSD.

  • THIS IS HOW TO USE TIMEMACHINE BACKUPS ON A NEW MAC/MACBOOK !

When you get a new Mac/MacBook & DO NOT get the dialog box WITH THE OPTION TO RE-USE BACKUPS,
This is all I had to do ?
Put in the OSX install disk & ERASE the hardrive using Disk Utillty,Then re-install Snow Leopard & after it's installed ,& gone through all the processes ,(DO NOT USE YOUR MAC WHILST DOING THIS),
YOU WILL THEN GET THE BOX WITH THE 3 OPTIONS & THE LAST ONE ON THE END SAYS RE-USE BACKUPS,CLICK ON THAT & IT WILL THEN VERIFY FOR A WHILE IN THE TIMEMACHINES SYSTEM PREFERENCES WINDOW, THEN IT WILL PREPARE FOR A WHILE ,THEN IT WILL ADD YOUR PREVIOUS BACKUPS ONTO YOUR NEW MAC &THEN CONTINUE FROM WHERE YOU LEFT OFF.
I HAVE BEEN TOLD THAT THIS WAS NOT POSSIBLE UNLESS YOU SEE THAT DIALOG BOX WITH THE RE-USE BACKUPS PROMPT,SO AFTER A LOT OF TRYING ,I FINALLY MANAGED TO RESOLVE THIS & THIS IS THE ONLY WAY YOU WILL GET THAT PROMPT BACK, I HOPE THIS HELPS MANY PEOPLE OUT,I'VE SPENT A WEEK TRYING TO SORT THIS & FINALLY CAME UP WITH THIS SOLUTION ,JUST REMEMBER TO ERASE THE MACINTOSH HD HARDRIVE BEFORE YOU RE-INSTALL IT AGAINOH HAPPY DAYS. !!

TOOK ME SOME THINKING & TINKERING ABOUT BUT THIS IS HOW YOU GET THAT DIALOG BOX PROMPT BACK IF YOU DON'T SEE OR GET THE PROMPT. I HAD PREVIOUS BACKUPS ON MY TIMECAPSULE & I WANTED THEM IN MY TIMELINE & THIS IS HOW TO GET THE RE-USE BACKUPS BOX/OPTION IF YOU DON'T GET THE PROMPT,I NEW THERE HAD TO BE A WAY !

  • Timemachine backups have disappeared

    Hi
I have an iMac 27 with an SSD for the operating system and HDD for my data. I have an external drive connected running Timemachine. Recently my Data drive failed and I was forced to replace it. I did so, and subsequently ran a restore of this data from the Timemachine backup to my new HDD. All went well and I have my data back. However, today I have seen that the Timemachine is running a FULL backup, which is fine, but I can not see any of the older backups which I had going back to August 2013?

  • Problems migrating TimeMachine backup to macbook

    Hola,
Because i had a hardware error, my MacBook air mid 2012 was send to an authorized fixing comp.
They had to be able to delete everything for my harddrive, so i made a backup.
I fromatted a HD to use as a Time Machine backup.
I backupped my computer and at the repairshop they indeed had to erase the drive to find and fix the problem.
Nothing special, i have a backup, right?
    Not working....
I connect via USB and my mac sees the drive. I see the backups too in folders, but when i start the migration tool and says that i want to restore a timemachine backup, he keeps 'looking for a source'.
In that state he stays and he dont find the Harddrive with the timemachine files.
What do i wrong (or not) and how can it be fixed (or not).
Would be great if someone can help me out!
    Robert

You posted in the Mavericks area, so I am assuming your machine now has Mavericks loaded on it.
I am also assuming you used Time Machine to create your backup.
Check System Preferences > Sharing and make sure your computer name is identical to what it was before your hardware error.  I found that Mavericks changed my comptuer name, and that made locating previous backups difficult.

One you start up the new one for the first time, Setup Assistant starts and offers you the option of migrating your old Mac to your new Mac with Time Machine, among other choices, as the source. You can also use Migration Assistant (in the Utilities Folder) to do the same thing.

  • Time Machine Won't Recognize Previous BackUps transfered to new iMac

I just bought a new iMac and used the assistant wizard to transfer all the files from my previous Mac (a dual 2GHz G5). No problem. I have several external drives and one main (1TB) drive that I use as the TM backup drive.
When I went to make my first backup as a user of new iMac, TM is telling me there's not enough space to complete the process. What is happening is that TM is trying to backup my ENTIRE set of hard drives, thinking that, because I have a new iMac EVERYTHING is new and needs a top to bottom back up.
All my backups (which are performed hourly using TM) are still on the TM disk, when i went to look the file structure, this a folder named "Zephyr One" and another (the most recent failed backup) folder named "Zephyr One 2"
A few questions: I can't find where I can change the name "zephyr one" this used to the name of my main hard drive, but I changed that back to Macintosh HD, which is also the name of the drive on my iMac.
The biggest question: how do I get TM to recognize that it doesn't have to do a total backup as if this were the very first backup being done.
    Thanks

Zephyr One is the computer name not the drive name. That's what TM uses to name those folders. Computer name is changed in system preferences->sharing.
The biggest question: how do I get TM to recognize that it doesn't have to do a total backup as if this were the very first backup being done.
you can't. TM will make a full new backup on a new computer. there is no way around that. if you don't have enough space for that i suggest you either reformat the TM drive and start backups from scratch or use a different external drive for new backups.
    Thanks

  • I am running a MacBook Pro with 10.7.5 and I downloaded the OS X 10.10.2 Update Combo, however when I try and open the package the error message "This volume is used for TimeMachine-backups". Which is not true. I´m using TimeCapsule.

I am running a MacBook Pro with 10.7.5 and I downloaded the OS X 10.10.2 Update Combo.
When I try and open the package after accepting the lincence-agreement and upon choosing the install-volume the error message appears: "This volume is used for TimeMachine-backups".
Which is not true. I´m using a timecapsule for backups.
    How can I proceed?

I am using a MacBook Pro (2010) with 2.53 GHz Intel Core i5, 4GB, 1067 MHz, DDR3, Startvolume Macintosh HD.
After downloading the package and starting upgrading it asks acceptance of the license-agreement. After that it asks for the volume were to install. And when I click on the Startvolume Macintosh HD (which is the only available on the machine) it says: "The volume is already being used for Time Machine-Backups".
It doesn´t offer to skip that point or to reconfigure the Time Machine settings.
The point is that my Time machine is not and has never used the Mac HD for Backups. In the past I have used an external drive and since 05/2014 I am using a Time Capsule which is appropriately addressed in the Time Machine settings.

  • Migration of Time Machine backup files to new Mac

I am the proud owner of a new iMac which is replacing an old 2006 model. I have 2 external hard drives which I have now connected to the new computer, I used to back these up using TM on my old mac. Can I migrate those backup files to the new mac so that if needed I can go back to restore files from months back ? The TM backup is held on a 3rd external drive.
Looking across the web it looks like if I switch on TM it will start with new backup files and wont read the old ones. Any ideas please ? Thanks

TM will make a completely new backup of your new computer, so you may wish to use a freshly formatted drive large enough to handle TM backups (roughly double the size of the drive you are backing up.) You can use TM or Migration Assistant to transfer from an old backup. MA is only useful if you want to transfer the entire Home folder, all third-party applications and support folders, system support folders, and system preferences. But if you want to move selected files and/or folders then you would need to use the TM application.
See User Tips for Time Machine for help with TM problems. Also you can select Mac Help from the Finder's Help menu and search for "time machine" to locate articles on how to use TM. See also Mac 101- Time Machine.

  • Can I recreate my Timemachine Backups from my old MacBook on a new MacBook Pro?

My MacBook (white, 6.1, late 2009, 2,26 GHz, Intel Core 2 Duo, OS X 10.9.3) has a major problem with frequent crashes after some minutes. I have a MacBook pro 13" and intend to try to move all contents (pictures, music, mail and everything else of importance) to the MacBokk pro by recreate my TimeMachine Backups (stored on a external HD LaCie) from my old MacBook on the HD of the MacBook Pro. Will this work?
    Thanks, Lukas

Not without knowing if the problem is hardware or software related.   And software corruption may be copied over in your backup as well.  You can piecemeal recover user data and applications, and maybe registration code preference files from your backup.  But I would not do a complete migration from the backup without knowing where the crashing is happening.
I would clone the backup before proceeding, just in case there is a problem with the backup drive as well.
And only move over one application at a time and test it on the other machine before moving the next one over.
Backup the other machine to a separate location once you know you have something that works both before the migration, and after you start migrating.

    Hi iVain
Fire up *Disk Utility*, click the Restore tab, then drag your old and new TM drives into the Source and Destination fields. Click Restore, and a complete copy of your old TM files will be made on the new drive. Go to TM preferences and select the new drive, and it will continue backing up just as it left off.
