Migrating PSE6 from Macbook Pro to iMac

Hello all,
I have been using PSE6 for about 7 months now on a prev gen MacBook Pro, and have it tweaked in to my workflow style (for now). I've recently purchased one of the new 24" iMacs, and I'm curious about the best methodology for moving PSE6 and all my current configurations off of the laptop and onto the iMac.Not sure at this point how closely I'm going to mirror the iMac to the accounts and settings from the MBP, so I'm a bit wary of diving into this until I have made those decisions.
I've run across a variety of options, from using the Migration Assistant to full fledged re-installation and configuration, but would like to hear from anyone whose done this recently and has any advice, tips, or problems noted with the way they got it to work. Thanks in advance for any input!

As barbara said, i would also recommend not to bring any files/folders related to PSE 6.0 on iMac through the migration assistant. In case you see that some of the PSE 6.0 folders have been moved by the migration assistant, then move those folders to trash and then install PSE 6.0 afresh on the iMac, there have been many issues reported and faced by the users by not being able to install Adobe products after migrating their files from the older machine to newer one. This can be a small effort but install time of PSE is around 5 mins and should be a better way to go ahead.
Best luck,
Ankush

  • Firewire to migrate data from MacBook Pro to imac?

Would someone guide me as to what kind of firewire I need to buy to migrate data from my MacBook Pro (which is two years old, OS X 10.6.8) to an iMac (which is brand new, but also two years old, it's the older model with a 20" screen).  I've never even heard of firewire until I turned on the iMac for the first time, so would be very appreciative of guidance.  Thanks!

Note if any of the data came from a PowerPC Mac originally, read this tip first:
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-2295
As that older data if it hasn't been through the Migration Assistant can give the Assistant a big headache.

  • Migration assistant from MacBook Pro to iMac time too long.

Okay. I know this has been asked a number of times but I have yet to find a discussion with the time span my macs have given me. Quick story: Migration assistant from 2006-ish model MacBook Pro with snow leopard to brand new iMac (got it three days ago). The absolute only option I have been given is to transfer via wifi, regardless if thunderbolt/firewire or Ethernet is plugged in. Nothing else will come up so I am forced to do a wifi transfer. My time span is about 124 hours, which is nuts. Given, I am transferring about 500gb (I'm a recording musician). Is this normal or is there something hosing up my transfer? It is moving, but very slowly. Since last night it has moved almost a quarter of the way. Has anyone else had this long of a wait? And no, I don't have a large external hd.

    Hello flyinghostie,
If you've not already, you'll need to launch Migration Assistant on both systems. The article linked below provides further information that you may find helpful.

  • What is the best way to transfer iPhoto from MacBook Pro to iMac?

What is the best way to transfer iPhoto from MacBook Pro to iMac?

the only way is Connect the two Macs together (network, firewire target mode, etc) and drag the iPhoto library intact as a single entity from the old Mac to the pictures folder of the new Mac - launch iPhoto on the new mac and it will open the library and convert it as needed and you will be ready move forward.

  • How do you move iMovies from MacBook Pro to iMac?

How do you move iMovies from MacBook Pro to iMac?  I started some projects on my MacBook Pro but would rather have the larger working area provided on the iMac large 27 inch screen.

    Hi there rainyri!
The easiest way for you to do this is to transfer the information to an external drive as an intermediary, then transfer the information from your drive to the internal drive on your iMac. We have an article that explains the steps for doing this, and it can be found here:

  • How do i transfer my data from macbook pro to iMac?

i just bought a iMac.  How do i transfer my itunes library, photos, files via bluetooth from macbook pro to my iMac?  Much thanks for your help!

I believe that when you boot your computer for the first time and you are following the onscreen instructions you are prompted whether you want to transfer data from an old mac or PC. If you click 'transfer from an old mac' and follow the onscreen instructions, this may work.
If you have already skipped this step you could use iCloud to transfer data. If you make sure that everything you want to transfer is synced in iCloud, this may also work.

  • Having difficulty migrating info from MacBook Pro to new iMac

I have been trying to migrate my information from my MacBook Pro (10.9.1) to my new iMac (10.9.1).  I've connected the two via ethernet.  They are recognizing each other, but then one or the other seems to shut off and requires me to enter my password and it stalls the whole process.  I've attempted this migration at least 5 times now (or more) and the same thing keeps happening.  Any suggestions?

I just got a new iMac on January 2nd, and moved 320GB worth of data from my external Time Machine backup drive (a Firewire drive connected to the new iMac via the Firewire to Thunderbolt adapter) to the new iMac in about 3 hours or so.  This was all done via Setup Assistant, not Migration Assistant (which can be run later on for those in a hurry to use their new Mac).
It almost sounds to me as if you're transferring everything via WiFi.

  • Migration Assistant From MacBook Pro 10.4.11 to iMac 10.6.3

Hope somebody can help me, I just bought an iMac to use at home and I want to transfer some of my files from my MacBook Pro running 10.4.11 to my iMac 10.6.3, is this possible using a FireWire cable and if so what kind of FireWire cable do I need to purchase?
    Thanks!

    Welcome to Apple's discussion groups.
You can put that MacBook Pro into "target disk mode" by holding down the "T" key while it's booting. The cable you need will depend on the vintage of your iMac. If it has FW400 (which has a socket that's square at one end and beveled at the other end), then a standard 6-pin FW400 cable will work. If it has FW800 (which has a rectangular socket), then you'll need a FW400-to-FW800 cable or a standard FW400 cable and a FW400-to-FW800 adapter.

  • Moving Multiple IOS devices From Macbook Pro to iMac

I just bought a new iMac (switching from a PC ).  I was able to move all of my families music and movies for their iPod Nano's very easily.  I have an iPhone 3GS, iPad 2, two iPod Touches (1G and 4G) and a Shuffle that are currently in separate libraries on my Macbook Pro.  What is the easiest way to move all of these to the new iMac so I can start using the iMac to sync the devices without losing anything.  Is this a multi-step process to move each one individually?
    Any help is greatly appreciated!!
    Thanks,
    Bruce

Hi, did you try booting the MBP into FireWire target disk mode...

Or is this not a TB to FW cable?
Is the MBP running Migration Assistant?
Does the MBP have a TB port?

  • Transferring iPhoto Library from MacBook Pro to iMac

I am trying to transfer my iPhoto library from my MacBook Pro to my iMac. My software is up to date on both computers. I put my MacBook Pro into firewire mode and tranferred over the iPhoto Library package file. I put it directly into my iPhoto library folder. I double clicked on the file and iPhoto opened, but it said that the file can not be read. Is this because on my laptop I have iPhoto 7.1.5 and on my desktop I have 6.0.6? I have also migrated from the iMac to the MacBook Pro a few years ago, could that be causing a problem? I called Apple about it and they said there is no reason this should not be working.

Is this because on my laptop I have iPhoto 7.1.5 and on my desktop I have 6.0.6?
This is exactly why. iPhoto 6 cannot read the iPhoto 7 Library. No version of iPhoto can read a later version's Library. The app is backward compatible, not forward compatible.

  • Transferring audiobook from Macbook Pro to iMac

I bought an audiobook today on my Macbook Pro, forgetting that my iPhone is syncing with my iMac.  In the past I have been able to use home sharing to move songs and books from one to the other.  I can't do that today.  Anyone know why?  I am suspecting that audiobooks have been forgotten with the addition of iBooks.  They don't fall under the books or songs categories???  Is that it?

Review Best Practices and Setup new Mac. Ensure you did the migration, properly.

  • Migrating data from MacBook Pro 2010 to MacBook Pro (+retina) 2013

I am transferring data from old MacBook Pro (purchased in the fall of 2010) to a new MacBook Pro with retina display (purchased November 2013). I connected the two via FireWire on one end and the thunderbolt/FireWire adaptor to thunderbolt on the other. I was prompted to connect via Ethernet but the new MacBook has no Ethernet port. Now, 12 hours after the migration was initiated, the process appears to have stalled. The progress line is about half way and the time remaining has been reading 1h20min for a while. I am transferring ~320GB. Since I have no way of checking on the progress, I don't know if it's just taking this long or if it stopped.
Would anybody recommend that I still go get the Ethernet/thunderbolt adapter and connect via Ethernet in addition to the existing connection via FireWire/thunderbolt?
    Thanks.

  • Sharing internet connection from MacBook Pro to iMac G3

My goal here is to connect my iMac G3 (that I just got) to my cable internet connection. However, there are some hurdles in doing so. On the other side of my house lies my modem. It's connected to a D-Link wireless router to give my PC, Xbox 360, Wii and MacBook Pro internet all at the same time. It's too far to drag an ethernet cable, and the iMac G3 doesn't have an AirPort card (and $99 for a used wireless b adapter is ridiculous).
From what I've gathered online, OS X can share it's internet connection with another Mac via FireWire, ethernet or AirPort. AirPort is out of the question since that's how my MacBook Pro connects to the net, and since the iMac G3 doesn't have an AirPort card. I don't have anything that uses FireWire, so othe port on both machines is free, but I also don't have a cable to connect the two. I do, however, have a few spare ethernet cables, so I'd like to get this setup using them.
Thing is, I can't get it to work. Simply enabling internet sharing in System Preferences does diddly squat, and no connection is found with Network Utility on the iMac. What I'd really like here is for someone to either instruct me on how to get this to work, or point me in the direction of such an article. I haven't been able to find anything with Google so far...
Now, my MacBook Pro obvioously runs 10.4.9 with all the updates. The iMac G3, however, is running 10.3.5 at the moment. While I will be upgrading it to tiger in the near future, I kinda wanted to play around with Internet Expplorer before doing so. Being new to the Mac and all (the MBP is my first Mac), I've never used Internet Exporer on the Mac -- or 10.3 at all really, for that matter. So if it can be done, I'd like to do this with 10.3 still on the iMac, though I could upgrade it to tiger if I HAD to.
Should it matter, the iMac G3 is a 400MHz indigo unit with 256MB RAM and a 10GB HDD. It's the summer '00 model. The MacBook Pro is a revision A system with a 1.83GHz Core Duo inside. More detailed specs can be found within my profile on here, I believe.
Sorry for such a long winded post...
    1.83GHz MacBook Pro 15"; 400MHz iMac G3 Indigo   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

I don't have anything that uses FireWire, so othe port on both machines is free, but I also don't have a cable to connect the two. I do, however, have a few spare ethernet cables, so I'd like to get this setup using them.
Lost me there... is it Ethernet cables you're using even though it's too far? Or What?
Should be no problem Sharing the Internet connection from 101.4.9 to 10.3.x.
Just waiting for more info or clarity.

  • Acrobat X Pro transfert from MacBook Pro to iMac

In January 2012 I bought Adobe Acrobat X Pro for Mac online.
I immediately downloaded and installed it on my 17" MacBook Pro (early 2009).
In December 2013 I bought an iMac and until recently I used concurrently both computers.
When I stopped using the two computers, I wanted to install Adobe Acrobat X Pro to the iMac (Yosemite) after uninstalling it from the MacBook Pro (Mavericks).
To this day I have not succeeded the reinstallation.
For this attempt to reinstall I used two methods:
    1) from the DVD copy I had engraved after downloading in 2012: I know that the software is on the hard drive of my iMac, it appears in the Applications folder and its icon appears in Launchpad;
    2) downloading from Adobe website to my iMac (Yosemite).
In both cases the result is the same when I click the icon or the app: a window opens asking me to enter the 24 digits serial number of my product; once it's done another window immediately appears stating, "The serial number you entered is valid, but no applicable products were detected on this computer". ...
Does it means I have to throw away a 3-year old product?

Thank you so much kglag for your help. It was the exact thing to do.
I had completely forgotten that I bought the complete version of Acrobat 9 Pro in 2009 and (two moves and an earthquake later) that my Acrobat 10 Pro was an update…
What a pity that Adobe does not mention this in the purchases page of my Adobe account.  I would have spare a lot of time and frustration.
    Thanks again!

  • IPhoto won't upgrade! Transition from Macbook Pro to iMac

I originally had a Macbook Pro and I loved it with the iPhoto software. Yet, I recently bought a new iMac and tried to load my pictures from my Macbook Pro (via External HD), yet it says that the my iPhoto needs to be upgraded. I click Upgrade and it says my current Photo library cannot be opened using this version of iPhoto.
Not quite sure what to do. I have to use Lightroom to open and edit all of my photos when I love using iPhoto to upload and share pictures.
Any help will be great. Thank you!

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
tied to load my pictures from my Macbook Pro (via External HD), yet it says that the my iPhoto needs to be upgraded
How did you load your pictures from the MBP to the iMac? Did you just copy the library package to your Pictures folder on the iMac?
If so make a temporary, duplicate copy of the library and try the three fixes below in order as needed:
    Fix #1
1 - delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your Home/Library/Preferences folder.
2 - delete iPhoto's cache files that are located in your Home/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder.
3 - reboot, launch iPhoto and try again.
NOTE: If you're moved your library from its default location in your Home/Pictures folder you will have to point iPhoto to its new location when you next open iPhoto by holding the the Option key. You'll also have to reset the iPhoto's various preferences.
    Fix #2
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys depressed and follow the instructions to rebuild the library. Select options #1, #2 and #6.
    Fix #3
Rebuild the library using iPhoto Library Manager as follows:
Using iPhoto Library Manager to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
1 -Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
2 -Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
3 - Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File->Rebuild Library menu option
4 - In the next window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
5 - Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments but not books, calendars or slideshows. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.
