Migrating server home user folder to new SAS

We are currently housing our "Home" users folders on our XRaid which is hosted on an Xserve G5, but are in the process of wanting to migrate them to a new Vtrak SAS array. Would this be a simple matter of copying that partition to an new partition on the Vtrak, or is there something more I need to consider. like re-pointing the users to a new drive via workgroup manager.
TIA
Spec's G5 XServer running OSX Tiger, with 7 channel XRaid Level 5

Okay - in case this helps anyone else.  This totally worked.  On initial set-up it migrated everything, however it does not ask you to create a new User Name, but it migrated all my stuff including the accounts.
I did not want my account name used, just the same mail, calendar, etc.  So....
While there seems to be a lot of postings saying you cannot change the name of your User Account, I don't know why, because you can indeed.
You have 2 choices:
You must be logged in as an Admin on another Login (I already had 2)
Choice 1
You go to System Preferences>Users
Unlock the lock,
Highlight the User you want to change
In the area called "Full Name" just change the name!
This however will not change the name of the home folder which is also what I wanted.  That is a little more involved but this absolutely worked:
Choice 2

I am running Mountain Lion on a new iMac (Oct 2013) - I have no idea if this works on anything older.
Good luck and thanks!

  • Time machine back-ups do not show or contain home / user folder

I back up my i-mac and macbook the same way using time machine and a hard-wired external hard drive. They both run snow leopard 10.6.5. I recently checked the contents of the back ups. The i-mac back ups contain my home user folder with all the documents in it, but the macbook back ups do not. The only difference I can think of is the file vault I have in the macbook. Do I have to turn it off to do a back up? I there a way around it?

  • Leopard Server - Web User folder - Access forbidden

    Hi,
we migrated our users from a Tiger server to a Leopard yesterday. Now all of them have 'access forbidden' errors on their web.server.com/~username folders.
There are read-only permissions on their sites folder and we can access the default server home page.
I have seen the posts for deskop 10.5.4 stuff for personal web sharing but that doesn't apply here.
    Any ideas?

I should say that the _www user/group is a system user/group, and therefore its hidden from the typical list of users and groups. I don't have a Leopard server in front of me, but there is a way to view system users and groups in the list. Hopefully your engineer knows it off the top of his head.

  • Can't copy user folder to new user (account)

I tunes would no longer open-- would only lock up with the beach ball spinning when I tried to boot it. Mac Genius said that the software was corrupted and need to create a new user. Here's what he said to do which i did...
At the suggestion of Mac Genius... I copied my whole user folder to an external harddrive. Then I created a new user. Logged in under the new user and deleted the old user. Then (logged in under the new user) I copy the user folder from my external hard drive to the system drive. It gets almost competely done copying and then gives me an error message that it can't be copied. I can't put the exact error message right now (at work) but can post it later. Any suggestions on this? This is keeping me from running i-tunes as well as moving forward with several projects.
At this point I am just thinking another trip to the Mac store...

    Hi Micah,
Where you trying to copy the whole User folder into your Home folder or into the Users folder?
Did you do any Disk maintence first?
Could be many things, we should start with this...
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Tiger Mac OS X Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
    5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    6. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then Safe Boot , (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it finishes.

  • Where is the Time Machine backup of my home/user folder?

I just realized that Time Machine hasn't created any backups of my "home directory"/"user folder" ... i.e. I can't find any of my documents or pictures (e.g. the iPhoto library) on the external hard drive.
I checked whether I somehow had listed my user folder on the "exclusion list", but the only thing listed there was the external hard drive (which makes sense).
Does anyone know what I can do about this? I really need Time Machine to backup my photos!!!
    (I am using Mac OS X 10.6.4)

  • Migrate Server 2008 Certificate Authority To New Server Different Host Name?

Our internal CA is installed on one of our Exchange servers.  Exchange is being migrated from 2010 to 2013, so all current Exchange servers will decommissioned and replaced with new new Hyper-V VMs with either Server 2008 R2 or 2012 R2 OS. The old VM
containing Exchange 2010 and the current CA will go away since we cannot afford to use the server resources and use up the required Windows license to keep that server running doing nothing but acting as a CA.
So, we will either need to move the CA to the new replacement Exchange 2013 server or some other existing server that's being used for something else (maybe one of the domain controllers).
What is the best way to handle this?  I don't think the migration from Exchange 2010 to 2013 allows for reusing the same host name on the replacement server and if we move the CA to another existing server, it will also be on a server with a new host
    name anyways.
Can we migrate the CA to a new server with a different host name?
What about reissuing all the active certificates from the current server to replace them with new certificates from the new server and then decommissioning the original CA?  Can this be automated in some way?
Which way is best and how would it be done?

When following the instructions in the guide, I would also consider to switch to new "sanitized" URLs in certificates (CDP and AIA) in case you had used the default URLs now. That's what I did this when migrating W2K3 CAs (with default URLs) to W2K8 R2.
Per default, the LDAP and HTTP URLs point to the CA server itself (HTTP) or to an LDAP objects that has the same name as the current server.
Migrating to a new server, you need to make sure that CRLs will still be published to the old locations - thus the new CA server would write to the LDAP object that corresponded to the old server, and HTTP might be fixed by redirecting the DNS record. (Make
sure this is documented so that nobody thinks it might be a good idea to delete the old object as it "references a server that does not exist anymore".)
As you have to fiddle with URLs anyway, I would then add new URLs having neutral names - that is URLs not including the name of the CA server. The new CA instance would then 1) publish to the old locations but not add these to certificates anymore and 2)
publish to new sanitized locations and add them to CDP and AIA URLs.

  • Restore User Folder on New Computer

I have a flat-panel iMac (10.4.11) that is totally misbehaving after a power failure. I can get it to boot, but the OS is totally flaky.
I have been able to copy my user folder to an external hard drive and now want to put it on a new computer (20" iMac - 10.5.3) and use the user account as if it was on the old computer.
Can someone give me the instructions for doing this under Leopard? Can I simply put the user folder into the Users folder, create a new account with the same short name, restart and voila? Or is there some rubber chicken mojo that I need?
    Thanks!

This procedure should actually work exactly as you describe but I wouldn't necessarily recommend it if you had problems with your old computer. any kind of preference file problems will be imported to the new computer. also I'm not sure how well that will work because you are moving from a 10.4 mac to a 10.5.3 one. I would create a new account and move only the stuff that you really need. Consult this [link|http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1571689&tstart=0] for the list.

I found those two to be immensely helpful in learning about encryption on Arch Linux.
Although it looks like you might actually want this (ECryptfs ArchWiki).  I use the dm-crypt/LUKS method, but the ArchWiki for ECryptfs looks like it has a good amount of info.
Just as a heads up, be sure to search the ArchWiki thoroughly and look up what you're trying to do in general (encryption) first when you're trying to solve a problem.  The ArchWiki is very detailed and helpful.
Thank you! Can I encrypt by use dm-crypt/LUKS method whole particion in few steps? Do you know does posible to clone hdd after full encryption?

  • APPLICATION FOLDER in my HOME (user) - whats it for?

    Hi
Can someone explain what the applications folder is for in my home/user folder ?
It looks the same as the applications section/folder icon , whith the pencil, ruler and paintbrush logo but it contains only one item. I dont understand what it is for ?
    thanks for your time
    didier

It's for your personal third-party applications that you may not want accessible by other users on your computer. It can also be used to keep third-party applications separate from the standard OS X applications. If you're the only user on the computer then you need not use it.

  • Access user folder over network

I have a new Mac Pro connected via ethernet to a early 2009 Mac Pro. I am able to connect them and share most data, but I can't get access to the contents of the folders in the remote home (user) folder.
All the permission are made to allow read and write privileges. I can navigate to the folders inside the remote user folder, but not the contents. I extended access permission to the entirety of the contents of the remote user folder.
All other folders and drives connected to the remote computer are accessible. It's just that pesky home folder I can't get into.
    Any ideas?
    Running 10.9.5 on both computers.

That worked, but I thought I had already done that as using the correct admin name was required in order for me to connect (for screen sharing anyway) in the first place when I initially began using this set up, and the correct name was autofilled. In any case, disconnecting and re-connecting did the trick. Thank you!

  • Tmutil restore hangs on user folder

I was following the procedures outlined here (http://support.apple.com/kb/ht5139), specifically the second section where the data drive is separate from the system drive (I had to do this as I am running an SSD as the system drive).
I entered the commands as shown, and it started copying files over. However, about 20 minutes into it, it hung on a file pertaining to iCloud on one users home folder. Repeated attempts ended in the same result.
    Library/Mobile Documents/com~apple~shoebox/UbiquitousCards/FftIx0rx0MzwDRTP0bpLFey07ow=.pkpass /footer.png
That is the last file listed. There are about 5 files in that folder, all small.
What is the recommended way to get around this?
    ~Mike

When I navigate to the latest backups folder on the external drive, the Users folder is grayed out and inaccessible.
In Time Machine or in the Finder?
On the data drive on the server, the Users folder is OK, but the username folder is grayed out and inaccessible.
In the Finder? Locally or on the clients?

During an aborted migration attempt from old Macbook Pro to a new machine running Yosemite my recently installed apps and settings have been placed in a deleted user folder. How do I reinstate them?

  • Migrate network home folders from server to server

I' m migrating my existing Leopard Server to SL, but i didn't use migration assistant, because i wanted to make some new config choices.
I tried to move home folders to the new server, but it seems i'm stuck with permissions issues.
Basically i want to move users home directories from the LS to the SLS, but after being copied, the permissions are altered to those of the admin of Snow Leopard. I found a lot of post's of migrating local accounts to server, but i did'nt find any addressing my problem.
How can i copy home folder stefaang to SL so that stefaang has all the appropriate rights?

If every user has admin rights then they may be able to muck with settings and files in a way you don't want.
Migrate user homes using "ditto -rsrc /oldpath/Users /newpath/Users (or whatever suits your needs)"
The key is that the UID of the user accounts on the new server must match the UID from the old server.
You can specify a UID when you create the account.
If you migrate user accounts the UID's will match.

  • My user data ( music, movies, et. al.) take up too much space to fit on my SSD. How do I use the user folder I've copied to my new iMac's hard drive?

As above. I can use Migration Assistant to move my account from my old machine, but the data are far too extensive to fit on the solid state drive. I copied my user folder over to the new hard drive, but how do I access its contents? More accurately, how do I set the folder on the hard drive as my default storage space?

  • Migrating Netscape Directory Server 4.1 to a new server

    Hi,
In the current production environment, we are using Netscape Directory Server 4.1 as the authentication with Siebel CRM system. The server hardware is old and there is a need to refresh the server. As Netscape Directory Server is the only supported/ certified LDAP with embedded functionalities in Siebel Financial Services 6.0.2.300, we are planning to upgrade only the server hardware and migrate all the user information from old server and the new one, with Netscape Directory Server 4.1 remained.
I have studied the Netscape Directory Server 4.1 Deployment Guide and gone through the migration procedures, looks like the procedures are only applicable for migrating Netscape Directory Server to a newer version. There are no specific procedures mentioned for migrating Netscape Directory Server to the new server hardware with the same directory server version.
I am seeking for detailed procedures of migrating Netscape Directory Server 4.1 to a new server hardware with the same directory server. Anyone has done this migration before? I thank you in advance for your valuable feedback.
    Sincerely,
    Julie

Luckily, I have the technical documentation in hand, which contains all the configuration of the current server. So I need to use "db2ldif" to export the data. I am currently testing on the migration by following these steps:
    1. Install the new server.
    2. Stop the Netscape Directory Server and Netscape Administration Server services in old server.
    3. Copy the slapd-<server_name> folder from old server to a temp location of new server.
    4. Take the old server offline.
    5. Configure new server to have the exact configuration as the old server.
    6. Backup the existing slapd-<server_name> folder in new server, copy the slapd-<server_name> folder from the temp location to C:\Netscape\Server4 directory of new server.
    7. Start the Netscape Directory Server and Netscape Administration Server services in new server.
Will try out your suggested method. Thank you so much for your feedback.
    Regards,
    Julie
