Migrating software from G5 to Mac Pro - possible or re-install?

I'm about to set up a Mac Pro and realized I'm not sure to what extent I could just copy everything across or whether I need to re-install everything from the software disks. I'm sure there's no problem with documents etc but for the actual application software I suspect I'd need to do fresh installations from the disks and put in the serial nos. again. Is this the case? Migration assistant probably just copies across address info etc from the older computer.
Also, is the software installed from a universal application actually different depending on whether it's installed on a G5 or Intel Mac. Or does it just operate differently depending on the processor of the machine it's on?

Thanks for all the replies. Kappy's guide is very detailed as well as the other links. I think I'll err on the side of caution and reinstall from all my boxed application install disks. I suspected there'd be problems concerning all the stuff applications install in extensions and preferences and other places.
I want to keep using the G5 as a backup so I'd rather not shift its boot drive to the Mac Pro. - although I did have a fevered idea I could just do a Time Machine restore from the G5s boot drive backup to the Pro's boot drive. Obviously now, not a good idea.

You can redownload previously purchased apps from the App Store using the same Apple ID on all your authorized Macs for free.
How to re download apps from the Mac App Store:
Open the App Store. From the menu bar click Store > Sign In
Click Purchases from the top of the App Store window.
Select which apps you want to re download. Then right or control click where you see Installed then click Install.
Make sure and use the same Apple ID used for the original purchase.

i currently bought the new mac pro retina display 250 GB (mid 2014) OS X Yosemite 10.10.1 (operating system), and migrated data (including app) from my old mac pro- 512 GB (mid 2010). they apps include parallel windows and after migrating i want to delete these app because they consume about 10 GB of my hard. when i try to delete it, it doesn't even show the trash icon + when i opened get info it is unavailable (parallel window icon is windows 7 & its copy). please help on how to delete

I have just got a new Mac Pro and decided to do a fresh install rather than migrate my user accounts over.
However, I copied the two Mail folders from my library on my old Power Mac G5, but none of the messages show up on my new Mac Pro.
Am I missing something else?

Yes, you are missing the plist.
First, copy ~/Library/Mail from your old system and replace the same folder on your Mac Pro.
Then replace "com.apple.Mail.plist" preference file located in ~/Library/Preferences with the same from your old system. This contains all email account settings and general mail preferences Now launch Mail. If it asks you to "import" anything, decline.

Do you mean the program itself? If so then if it was bought from the Mac App Store just logon to the MAS with the same Apple ID you used when you bought it and redownload and install on the new Mac.
If it was bought on DVD then get that DVD out and install in on the new Mac then run Software Update to bring it up to its most current version.
If you mean the Keynotes you created then just copy them over your LAN from one Mac to the other.

These may be different issues, but lets look at rentals first.
Poor motion can result from mismatched output. If your source is 24 or 30 fps you should set the output of the Apple TV to 60 Hz, for 25 fps content use 50 Hz.
Additionally motion software on the TV itself can cause the picture to jump, check your TV settings and turn off any motion settings in use,

Why is migrating info from PC to MacBook pro taking so long

I have just purchased my first MacBook Pro always used PCs. I have gone through the set up procedure and am now migrating information/files from PC to Mac. It is transferring my music at the moment but is taking a long time....it says I have 19hrs and 20 mins remaining? Is this normal? Should I have not transferred nearly all my PC files etc? Also as I'm transferring from PC to Mac, will I have to install anti-virus stuff.....now very confused!

Thanks for your reply. Ok, at 1.30am I got out of bed to see what was happening my PC was telling me the Internet connection was lost to the Mac but was trying to find a connection. There was the option to quit, so I did. This morning I find the Mac is still showing the 'Transferring Information' box stating 'copying Jan's Music' 'About 18 hours and 36 minutes remaining'. I don't know how to get rid of this, I have pressed 'esc' but nothing is happening. I initially followed the step-by-step set up with from the booklet that came with the Mac and followed the transfer files as it said, and downloaded the migrate 'thing' from apple onto my PC, I chose what I wanted to transfer from the box options which came up on my Mac (from the PC). I am using WiFi. As you can probably tell, I am not very computer literate, and thought once my Mac was out of the box I could use it! I would like my iTunes library and associated stuff on my Mac without losing any music, the rest of the files and documents can wait until I am more confident at transferring stuff. It all seemed very straight forward when I visited the apple store and had nearly a 2hr demo and chat with the guy before purchasing a very expensive laptop.

Do you mean that you transferred your purchases from the iPhone to your Mac pro? You can also set your Mac's iTunes preferences to automatically download purchases made to it. You'd have to check the specifics for the app that you are having an issue with, but some apps that are designed for the iPhone won't work on your Mac. Developers usually create two versions of their software.

Apple was emailing people that did, not sure if they still do.
It would be so easy to say "Mac Pro (2008) or later" instead we have:
Compatibility: * Requires Mac Pro with PCI-Express 2.0
Which not everyone knows is, or means "Mac Pro (2008)"
They do need a tech note or knowledge base to go along.
