Migrating to 10.6.8 exactly how it was previously.

Hi!
Sorry if I offend some people by asking this question in a place where we should feel safe to ask questions without being screamed at "haven't you searched this forum before asking?" or "RTFM!".
I searched. And it is overwhelming. Especially when english isn't your first language and that it can be difficult to properly formulate a specific question. If you don't want to answer, please don't.
Here is my question :
On my MacBook Pro, I am on 10.5.8, and I want to migrate to 10.6.8. I have been told that it is better to "clean install" 10.6.8, therefore, I should backup my MBP because it will be erased.
So what I want to know is if there is a special way to backup a computer so it can be reloaded exactly how it was (on the new OS) without having to redo everything... I have lots of software (graphic design and music software), and I don't have time right now to reinstall all the software, the plug-ins, the updates, the permissions, etc.
Also, recreating all my Mac Mail mailboxes and rules, my Safari and Firefox bookmarks, etc.
Let's not forget I have thousands of fonts that are all well organized in my FontExplorer X Pro...
(Nightmare!)
Thanks for everything!
Chris.

As mentioned earlier, that's not necessary. Just install Snow Leopard on top of your current Leopard installation.

Simplest is to use something like Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper! to put a bootable backup/clone of your current installation onto an ext FWHD. That will give you one that can be restored to the MBP putting you back to where you are now.

I use Time Machine to back up my entire computer with my external hard drive. I am getting a brand new iMac this month and was wondering what is the process of using this back up to restore my new computer exactly how my old computer was? I want to make sure I will still have various important files on my new computer, like my songs in iTunes, my photos in iPhoto, etc, etc. Thanks so much in advance!

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
When you turn on the new iMac for the first time, Setup Assistant will ask you to restore a backup, so connect the external disk and follow steps to restore all your files to your new iMac. Your new Mac will have the same settings and programs as your old computer.
In other cases, I would recommend to restore the whole backup without using Migration Assistant or Setup Assistant, but a Late 2012 iMac uses a special OS X build, so the OS X version that you're using on your old Mac won't work on the new one. • Mountain Lion re-install has migration assistant options greyed out.  How do I choose only data I want?

I ran out of space on my Mac Mini so I bought the iFixit kit and added a second drive.  This resulted in me putting a 60GB SSD system drive and a faster 7200 RPM 500GB data drive in the mini.  I removed the original 500GB drive and placed it in an external enclosure.
After installing Mountain Lion I ran migration assistant.  It shows all the data from the external drive, but everything is checked and it will only migrate to my 60GB OS drive.  Of course this won't work.
I made a link to /Users to my second internal data drive but migration assistant still shows a -486.34GB of space needed.
So, instead of taking a week to upgrade my App Store purchases and install and configure everything (Mountian Lione Server, Xcode, Microsoft Office, Parallels...) how can I get migration assistant to allow me to just choose specific items to migrate?
As a side note, how can I make Mac OS X Mountain Lion use the second internal drive for User accounts *AND* recognize it properly?  My link works but I'm early into this and would rather do it 'right' now then live with frankenmac later.
    Thank you,

Well, maybe I posted to the wrong forum...
I went in to speak with a mac genius too.  All I got was, "In all the years I've worked on Macs, I've never seen the migration assistant with greyed out options."  Ok.  I guess I have more experience, I've seen it.  They then suggested I run check permissions on the drive and buy Disk Warrior for $100.  Sorry guys, the drive is fine.  My TM backups are fine.  It's not that.
I went ahead and bought a 1 TB drive.  Even then, the migration assistant choices were greyed out.  I went ahead and created a Fusion drive to take advantage of the SSD (the 1TB is only 5400 RPM).  The directions can be found here.  I then just ignored the greyed out options and brought *all* the data over to the 1.1TB drive.  Everything works fine.
I'm bummed about not getting the apps and O/S pinned to the SSD but I figure if anything is getting used a lot, its where it needs to be.

  • How can I record a Synth lead to sound exactly how I played it?

For some reason when I record with the "Analog lead", it doesn't record exactly how I played it.

Check the inspector on the left of the screen.  If it's not present, hit the "I" key.  Check the MIDI Thru setting.  It should be set to "off".  If it's set to a quantize value, it will alter the timing of the incoming MIDI notes.

  • When I use my EE4G in the States, exactly how do I dial a local U.S. number?

When I use my EE4G in the States, exactly how do I dial a U.S. number? I will be arriving in Philadelphia and changing planes to go to New York. I want to be able to phone my host in NY when I arrive in Philly, to let them know I've arrived all right and that I've made it to my connecting flight. I get very stressed when travelling and need to make sure I know precisely how to dial. Do I still add the country code? Are there any other differences for dialing NY from the States as opposed to the UK?  Is there anything else special that I must do?

Yes, you always need to dial the number in the full international format including the country code then the area code followed by the number.
So for example, to dial a number in Manhattan, New York (different areas of New York have different area codes as we have), you enter it as +1 (the US country code) followed by the area code (Manhattan is either 212, 646 or 917) followed by the full number.  To get a + sign press and hold down the 0 (zero) button for a few seconds.  You don't drop any digits off US numbers when dialing them in the international format like you have to for UK numbers.
Example, dialing lets say the W New York Times Square hotel which is (212) 930 7400, you enter it as +1 212 930 7400

Try going to Settings>Store and sign out and sign back in.
It also could be due to an Apple server problem. and yu will just have to wait and try again.

  • Exactly how to share files over three machines in our home

    hi folks
I think my question is basic and I hope one of you can assist. We have an iBook G4, MBP 2009 edition, quadcore Mac..all running 10.5.7. I want to share files between them all. I have researched File Sharing on the computers but I can't figure out how to access each computer from the others. Any places to look online for exactly how to set up and then actually use File Sharing.
Is the software Dropbox the easiest way to go?

Just to confirm, your router is square, not a UFO, right? If so, you need a USB 2 hard drive that doesn't spin down or go to sleep. People have complained about some Western Digital drives. I've been using a 1TB Lacie and a 1TB Seagate FreeAgent quite happily.
Attach the drive to your computer and run the Disk Utilities program in your Utilities fold. You may need to visit the partition tab of the program to make sure it is partitioned for a Mac (go ahead and partition it Mac GUID if it has been pre-formated for DOS). While it is connected to the Mac transfer the files you want to place on the drive (faster that way, especially if there are a lot of them). Then eject & disconnect the drive from the computer (turn it off too).
Connect the drive to your AEBS. If you are already sharing a printer with the base station you can connect a USB hub to the AEBS and then plug the printer and hard drive to the hub. After connecting the hard drive and turning it on, go back to the computer and run the AirPort Utility program to configure your 'Air Drive'.
After the Airport Utility program runs click on your base station and select the 'Manual Setup'. In the button bar you'll see a disk icon labeled Disks. Click on it. The disk connected to your airport should show up there. Select it and click on the 'File Sharing' tab. The 'enable file sharing' option should already be check marked - if it isn't select it. Select your security level - I use the default 'with Airport password' and remember password in keychain since I'm not worried about security in my house.
Click on Update and once the airport is showing green again, you should see your airport air drive in the 'sharing' tab of the Finder sidebar. The airdrive, I've found, is not reliable for using TimeMachine but for sharing files it is great. I even keep my music and movies on it for my notebook. Syncing my Touch via WiFi is a bit slower than connecting it to my desktop but the convenience more than makes up for it.

I want to move my mail account (exactly how it is on my laptop now) to my new mail account on mavericks (which is on a new SSD drive) then i am going to format the old hard drive so i can use it as an extra hard drive.
    Surely it should be easy?
I thought i could just drop the mail folder but it looks different on Maverick.
I also have a hard drive back up of the old folders and also a time machine back up.

See below for location of export.

I also think if you copy everything in ~/Library/Mail you may be all-right.

  • Exactly how to copy/paste audio?

I see in the manuals and lessons that you can copy audio from a video clip and use it elsewhere.
What I'm stuck on is EXACTLY how you copy audio (without the video it is with). I have "extracted" the audio in the clip from which I want to take the audio and identified which bit of it I want.
I see from the manual how to copy video, by placing cursor just under the play head and dragging. But this brings with it the video, so when I paste I get the audio I want together with the unwanted video which barges out of the way the clip into whcih I want to drop the audio only.
I am sure I'm missing something simple, but I can ony find guidance on copy video, not audio, althought he lessons lightly say you can do it, they don't say how.
    Anyone can help?
    TIA

    Answered my own question.
You select by positioning the "audio playhead" in the audio clip in question, dragging it and pressing Coomand-C to copy the audio clip. (I'm guessing this is obvious to Mac users but it's not clear to this pc refugee how to "select" - in fact it's taken days to get to the bottom of this.
Then position the playhead where you want the audio clip and Edit-Paste, then trim teh excess to get the bits you don't want.
Actually less intuitive and user friendly than I would have expected, but well, there is it.

  • How to get everything exactly as it was after backup and format

I want to backup and format my one and only Macbook Pro internal drive in order to properly defragment for boot camp partitioning. However, when I'm done, I want the OS X portion of my computer to be exactly as it was; files, logins, applications, etc. Like it never even happened. I have an external USB drive that's plenty big enough, at least twice over.
So here's what I was thinking about doing:
On my external USB, I would format into 2 partitions (which would each be more than large enough to accommodate a full image of my current operating drive), and then in Disk Utility, I would save a "new image" of my current operating drive onto partition 1 of my external. This would be an overnight operation I would think. Then, to test it out, I would "restore" partition 2 to the image on partition 1. Also, a lengthy process I would think. Then, partition 2 would be bootable as a full computer which would look exactly like my current computer.
    Right?
    Is this fantasy?
Because at this point I could format my internal drive using extended journaled, then "restore" the internal drive to the image I created, which still exists on partition 1. Right?
Other options, I assume would be:
    Setup assistant
    Migration assistant
Do a time machine backup to the external, then restore from that backup after the reformat
    Any help here?

There is only one way to defragment the drive quickly and safely. Erase an external drive or volume on an external drive large enough for your internal drive. Clone the internal drive to the external drive or volume using the Restore option of Disk Utility:
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger, Leopard or Snow Leopard.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
Clone using Restore Option of Disk Utility
    1. Open Disk Utility from the Utilities folder.
    2. Select the destination volume from the left side list.
    3. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
4.Check the box labeled Erase destination.
    5. Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag it to the Destination entry field.
    6. Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to the Source entry field.
    7. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Destination means the external drive or volume.
Source means the internal startup drive.
Boot from your external drive: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager appears. Select the icon for the external drive/volume and click on the downward pointing arrow button. Once booted from the external drive/volume:
    Hard Drive Preparation
    1. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area. If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing. SMART info will not be reported on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID (for Intel Macs) or APM (for PPC Macs) then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
Now restore the clone from the external to the internal:
    Restore Clone to Internal Drive
Destination means the internal startup drive.
Source means the external drive or volume.
+Note that all you do differently is reverse the drives in the cloning process. The external drive/volume becomes the Source and the internal startup drive becomes the Destination.+
