Migrating to a new OD master?

Hello all,
We currently have a G5 Xserve running OS X Server 10.4.11. This is our main server: it is our OD master, it has networked home directories, and various share points for different groups in our office. We will be replacing this with a new Intel Xserve, presumably running OS X Server 10.5.4. Obviously, I am looking for the most painless (or perhaps least painful) method of migrating not just our data, but user accounts, OD settings, and other necessary items. I have been finding a fair amount of information about migrating plist files directly from Server Admin, which seems like a good way to do it. One interesting thing I came across was this:
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=937764&tstart=180
The idea is to set up the new server as an OD replica of the current one, and once it finishes setting up, turn off OD on the old server, then set the new one to be the OD master. Will this work? If so, what will it transfer - usernames, groups, user information, and passwords? It just seems too... simple, particularly when compared to what is laid out in Apple's migration guide.
If not, what would people recommend as the best method of getting user data, particularly passwords, to the new server? I would really prefer to not have to have 40+ people redo their passwords, particularly since 10 or so of them work offsite. Thanks!

Hi Matt
Yes it should work? Provided Master and Replica are exactly the same versions of the OS of course. However you still have the same problem! Irony on top of irony? What an OD Replica does is it keeps a copy of everything to do with the LDAP Database read from the OD Master. Of course the Replica will have to have a different IP Address. If you want it to keep the same address then you are talking about a failover. Which is something quite different.
As extra insurance - because you never know - you could export all users and groups, as well as archiving the LDAP database. You should be aiming to do this on a regular basis anyway just in case. So far when restoring an LDAP database (which retains everything) from a 10.4 Server to 10.5 I've had problems. However there may probably be just as many who have had no problems at all?
Another way of transferring users/groups and passwords is to use Passenger:
http://www.brothersoft.com/passenger-download-87655.html
If time and money is not an issue then its worthwhile to have as many 'failsafes' as possible (drives are cheap after all), especially if your preferred option of OD Master/Replica Demotion/Promotion does not work. If it was me and provided I had an up-to-date and working bootable copy of the server you could:
(a) Go for an 'old fashioned' update - you never know it might just work!
(b) Try the OD Master/Replica option
You could get lucky here because you may be able to get hold of 10.4.10 or even 10.4.11 server and install that on your new XServe. If not you will have to buy another copy of 10.5 Server. However you still have the original problem.
(c) Export users and groups from your current OD Master either using the WGM or Passenger
(d) build your new OD Master (10.5) from scratch on a standalone network (just a switch, the xserve and nothing else)
(e) When you are happy transfer user home folders and data
Test the new OD Master thoroughly before switching off the old one. Re-introduce the new one when you're happy. You may find these posts useful?:

  • CREATING NEW/Duplicate Master clips

Hi Guys...me again. I've been reading the manual all weekend...and decided that, since I SCREWED with this compressor thing...that I'd try to prevent the problem from happening again. I need to know if I'm on the right track.
I'm working on a video of our show (animal show) and I am creating a dozen or so "mini clips" in the timeline, one for each animal segment, each contains a/b roll, effects, etc. I DO NOT have these clips linked togeter yet...I've left a gap in the timeline between each clip, in order to grab and move them around as I see fit.
I was thinking...(a dangerous past-time for me) that "Gee, Mark, wouldn't it be swell if I could make each of these little animal clips into independent clips, so if I screw up, or have to go back and tweak it later...I don't have to deal with this **** compressor and ripping apart my work? ".
SO...I read the manual, and it seems that I can do this. The option in the menu is to make an independent clip, but when I highlighted my video/auido files in the clip area, and clicked the independent clip button, nothing happened. Does this mean that it recorded it somewhere on my project drive? i could not seem to find it. Also, should I just Modify it by making a New/Duplicate Master CLip?
Does this sound like I'm on the right track?
I'm just trying to prevent my "other" (freakin' compressor) issues from having to happen again.
    THANKS AGAIN!
    MW

No. That is not what it means.
Make independant clip removes the link between the timeline clip and the clip in the browser that the timeline clip came from. In otherwords, it will keep you from matching back to that clip in the browser.
I don't know what issues you have with compressor, but if you want your segments to be self contained clips, export them as self contained quicktimes (using Export QuickTime Movie... leave it at Current Settings... and set Self Contained). Then you can bring them back in and arrange them in your timeline as you see fit, they will be entirely self contained...

I am migrating to a new iMac via TimeMachine back up.  My iPhoto libraries are on an external drive.  Both drives are backed up on Time Machine.  I'd like to migrate only the old internal hard drive data to the new internal Drive and then just plug in iPhoto library drive to the new iMac.  This would save having to transfer several hundred GBs of data.  Will this work using Set Up Assistant?

Your user account on the new Mac must have a different UID than on the old one.  See the pink box in Problems after using Migration Assistant for an explanation.
You'll need to change the permissions on the iPhoto library on the external HD.  Do a Get Info on it, click the padlock at the bottom of the Sharing & Permissions section of the Info window and enter your Admin password.
Then click the plus sign, select the user account you want on the next screen, and click Select.   Then change Read only to Read & Write for that user via the little arrows.  Finally, click the "gear" icon and select Apply to enclosed items.  That may take a few mintutes on a large library.

    Hello
I bought my wife a new MacBook Pro, in setting it up for her, I took her Time Machine external drive to migrate onto the new machine but her old MBP not only was on 10.6, it was my old machine which I was still Administrator for.
i plugged in the external drive to start the migration process after entering her name and username from the old machine which gave me the options on transferring the old data over.
I also unchecked the Administrative end that had my info hoping that ONLY her data, files, etc., would be the ones sent over to her new machine which I wanted her to be the ONLY Administrator for. All went like clockwork until the restart.
Normally the screen should show the username and only need the password but both entries were blank, as in ‘Other’ sign in option available only. I entered her name and password, nothing….used her username and password, nothing. Used my old Administrator name and password, NOTHING!
I tried defaulting to factory settings from the Restore feature but it directs me to notify Apple. I tried in Terminal to change the password, nothing. I tried to boot from MY external drive and it doesn’t recognize it. I tried to even use my external drive which actually has the Mavericks upgrade, nothing!
Basically I can only get the startup screen which isn’t accepting the username/password or the Restore feature which doesn’t offer any options helpful!
Please, how do I start from scratch and start over here? Or simply change the Administrator name and password so I can proceed with everything thats already on there? I wish I could even boot from another drive but no luck on anything!

First, on the old machine, make your wife's account an admin one. Log into it and delete yours. Then, update the TM backup. Finally, use Internet recovery mode, ⌘⌥R, erase the HD, and restore the OS. One first boot, follow the steps outlined in Pondini's Setup New Mac guide.

    Yes.
You can authorize up to 5 computers to play itunes music ( pre-itunes plus).  There is no limit on itunes plus ( all itunes music for the past several years) and imported music.
You can sync as many ipods/ipads/iphones as you like to each of your computers.

22020134.exe is the file Adobe say you must download and run to instal Acrobat 7.0 Pro. I went through the  process, the one described in your link, I downloaded the file, ran it, it runs well, except it tells me my serial number is invalid. Now what? Does this mean I now have to discard my Adobe Acrobat 7.0 Professional and start again with a $500 purchase? All I want to do is transfer what I have to another computer.

  • HT3231 Is it better to migrate to a new MacBook Pro using FireWire, from Time Machine, or over ethernet?

    Hello,
Is it better to migrate to a new MacBook Pro (non Retina display) using FireWire, from Time Machine, or over ethernet? The older Mac is a MacBook (Intel, 2007 vintage). The Time Machine backup is to a Western Digital external drive with FireWire & USB ports.
    Thanks!

    Thanks for the helpful reply.
After posting, I read & researched further. We're going to be limited by the hardware – the MacBook & external drive both have FireWire 400, & we don't have a 400 to 800 cable or adapter. So we'll connect by ethernet, & be patient that it make take some time.
I have to assume that Migration Assistant will be just as comprehensive regardless of the connection method / protocol.
    Best!

after migration to a new macbook i cannot open photoshop. I get error message "you can't open this application "adobe photoshop cs" because powerpc applications are no longer supported"

You cannot run Photoshop CS on a new Intel-based Mac running OS X Mavericks. CS is far too old.
You'll have to buy Photoshop CS6 or Photoshop Elements 12. Or subscribe to CC.

  • Migration cockpit of new G/L- balance carry forward

    Hi,
I have a question regarding the migration cockpit for new G/L. This a prepaid service of SAP and we are at test stage of migration cockpit. Before migration to new G/L, we have
    posted year-end-postings t-code
    F_TR_01 for Turkey , program RFSUMB00
for all P&L accounts and balance sheet
accounts for year 2007. Thus, all G/L
accounts give a balance of zero for
year 2007. Among the migration cockpit
activities ,do we still need to
    execute transfer balance carry
    forward step?
    Kind regards,
    Gökçen.

    Hello Gokcen,
In your case, you can execute the ' Transfer balance carry forward' step of the GL Migration cockpit, for two reasons:
    1. Since the migration cockpit moves data consistently from the classic GL database tables to the (New) GL database tables, this step needs to be executed.
    2. The cockpit has steps synchronized so that there is no harm in executing a step that may seem redundant. So, better to execute the step than not
    Regards,
    Sangeeta

    Hi Gurus
Is there any standard migration program for new G/L Accounts.
or please tell the process of how we migrate data to New G/L accounts.
    Thanks

    Hi,
There is indeed a migration program to transfer the G/L accounts data to SAP. You can use LSMW tool to migrate the data.
    Program Name: RFBIBL00
Program Type : D (Direct Input)
    Object : 0100
    Method: 0000

  • Application Software (example Microsoft Office) does or does not migrate to the new computer

From a software standpoint, when you use data migration Mac to Mac or PC to MAC, why application software, like Microsoft Office or Adobe Photoshop, sometime are able to move (migrate) to the new computer without any issues and sometimes the user must BUY again the software?
Technicians told me that sometimes the Migration Data is capable to migrate the Software Serial Number of the software and sometimes does not.
But, what is the real techincal answer? What happens to the serial number when you migrate?

Depends on how the App stores the serial number. Some apps fail when the file that holds the serial number gets moved and must be reinstalled.
None of that requires you to purchase it again. You just have to install it using the key you were provided with the software.
No apps will be migrated from a PC as they will not work with OS X.
Office 2004 will not Migrate as it doesn't work in Mountain Lion.

  • File opening throws RBS exception after migrating to a new farm with sql 2012

We have successfully migrated the SP 2010 -sql 2008 r2 wss_content to a new sp2010 farm with sql 2012. The old and new farms are configured for RBS - FIlestream.
In the new farm when tried opening a document we see the below exceptions in event viewer. The documents open fine for admin users and fail for others. I have verified all the permissions on the blob store file location and it looks good. Users have no

Any suggestions on how to debug this would be great, do we need to rerun the .migrate() to realign any of the blob file references, we played around setting the max file size couple of times.

Migration - its a content db backup/restore/mount to new farm with sql 2012 from sql 2008 r2
Okie here are the results after we tried to narrow down the issue to few steps-
This issue happens on documents that are already existed in the content db prior to migration. we picked two docs from one library. DOC A and DOC B of close to same size..
DOC A - file size 64k, rbs max size set to 1mb.
Regular User and SPAdmin both can open fine, check out n check in successfully.
no entries made in event vwr of front end and DB server
DOC B - file size 64k, rbs max size set to 1mb
SPAdmin - can check out n open fine, but cannot check in back - file not available error
Regular User - cannot open the file - file not avialable at the url
Both users can view doc properties at lib level..
Errors found in event vwr of DB server -
"FILESTREAM file named with GUID '00311100-0000-51eb-f3a8-0b387bc5c5ce' that belongs to
FILESTREAM data file ID 0x10001 does not exist or cannot be opened."
    and
"The operating system returned the error '2(The system cannot find the file specified.)' while attempting 'FsDoHandler::CreateFile' on 'H:\Blob_Store\a06953ae-6f49-43b1-9c2d-fefb13bda9fe\1c581a4a-b450-4143-bc3d-8d419b49b0fb\0000eb20-000066ff-0002'
    at 'fstrman.cpp'(2075)."
I incline to believe that the references for documents in blob store could have been corrupted for some documents during the migration. Any new docs uploaded to content or to blob are all accessible fine.
I'm not sure running .migrate() will re align the blob file references? Any ideas on how to effectively get this resolved..

Can you upgrade from 1.3.0.20 small ovf to 2.1 without migrating to a new server? It sounds like you can just adjust the server settings now. I am currently running 1.3.0.20 and I have enough to do with also needing to upgrade my wlc to 7.4.121.0 and getting the MSE up to 7.4.121.0 without having to stand up a new server if I don't have to. Please share any information you have in regards to your experience with coming from a version 1.2-1.3 small ovf and going to 2.1.
    Thanks,

You are better off standing up a new server.  It's cleaner and safer..... you can always try to upgrade if you wish, but if things don't work out well, then you just wasted a lot of time.  Snapshot the VM and export the floor plans, just in case.  The ova is built around the DB size, so I don't know how well the DB will perform if you try to expand memory or drive space after an upgrade.
