Migrating to iMac (Intel) after 25+ years pf PC use!

Hi everyone. My first post here, and I'm a Mac virgin, so please treat me gently!
Next week I'm picking up my new iMac. This will be the first Mac I have ever owned (or even used) and I have a question: What is the fastest and easiest way to transfer my PC data (mainly my own digital photos) over to the iMac? I have about 100 gig of data that I want to transfer. My first thought was to backup my stuff to DVD and then copy it off into the Mac, but that would take a couple of dozen DVDs. I do of course have backups of the data already but they are on a secondary HD.
Any help would be appreciated.

Hi! I had to reinstall OS X 10.6.8 on my 21.5" iMac Intel after which I can't install the Lion from the Apple Store I purchased last year. It downloads but comes with an error message to install. Any help is appreciated.

Make sure your Mac meets Lion's requirements:
Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7, or Xeon processor
2GB of memory
OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)
7GB of available space
As for downloading issues ..
Installing the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo reinstalls the App Store for you which may help. It's ok to do this even though you are already running v10.6.8.
Restart your Mac after the combo is installed then launch the App Store.
How to re download apps from the Mac App Store:
Open the App Store. From the menu bar click Store > Sign In
Click Purchases from the top of the App Store window.
Select which apps you want to re download. Then right or control click where you see Installed then click Install.
Make sure and use the same Apple ID used for the original purchase.

IMac Display failing after 1 year of average use.

I have a mid 2011 27" iMac (the one with thunderbolt) and the display is starting to fail after 1 year of average use (an hour of use every day on average). The display is now much dimmer on the left half of the display (the GPU sits underneath that portion) and also flickers the whole display now and then to a lower brightness.
I am about 45 days out of warranty and basically will have to cough up $500 to have it fixed by Apple. My questions are... Has anyone else ever had this happen to them? The genius bar employee thought that it was something he has seen happen to displays when exposed to heat over long periods of time. So basically playing starcraft 2 and doing video encoding killed my display if you believe that to be the cause.
Are there any conditions in which apple would recognize this as a manufacturing defect and fix it free of charge? Otherwise it looks like im writing a check for $500 next week.

Today a dark streak showed up on my display right in the middle. It is shaped like a zebra stripe but is dark grey and wont go away.
I too have a mid 2011 27" 3.4GHz i7 iMac with a 2GB Graphics card . Im about 50 days out of warranty.
Seems like its perfect coincidence for apple that 50 days after my warranty runs out, the most expensive thing to repair breaks.
After doing some research it seems like there is a lot of people with this model experiencing this problem.
Pretty sad that my 2005 iMac is holding up better than my brand new iMac.
Been saving up for it for like 4 years and I dont have the money to repair it.
I tried everything, I knew none of the stuff i tried would work but i still tried resetting the PRAM repairing disk permissions all that good stuff. I even have an air purifer/dehumidifier in my room so i dont know what caused it.
I didnt think i needed applcare because ive had my other imac since 2005 without a hiccup.
Ive rendered out 3d animations using the cpu at 100% for days and it still runs fine.
Havent even used my new imac for anything that would put stress on it.
What i do notice is that it runs hot all the time. ever since I got it. Sometimes just doing basic stuff such as browsing safari it can get so hot where i cant touch it. my GPU normally stays at around 70C and the hottest its been was 80C which is still safe. The alluminum is supposed to transfer heat better but all it does is retain heat more and get super hot. the old plastic one i have is 10x cooler.
What i did notice today tho when my screen problem happened, is that the GPU temperatue is at 50C and wont go above it. I monitor the temperature with istat and never have seen it at 50C and below unless i am just doing a fresh boot.
What really concerns me tho is how the screen went out so close to when my warranty expired.

DW is my favourite editor but after several years I stop use this product because its crap... sorry about that but its true.
All my live I create websites, I never doing something else so I know what pro user really needs, but absence of basic functionality is main reason to leave DW and start to use PHPstorm.
Brackets and tag highlighting is still missing in DW, Adobe think about it.... in some cases its hard to use it.

You shouldn't need to export anything, though I don't know what they do these days for trial version restrictions. You should be able to save it to a disk directly using Save As (at this stage since it's already saved most likely).
To save a copy of it as a CS3 file, again, you choose Save As, and in the bottom of the file saving interface you should be able to select CS3 from the lower drop list. I don't know what Macs come with for zipping files. On Pc's these days you simply send the file to a compressed folder via a filename--when you right click it a menu appears with that as an option.
At this stage I figure it likely has to do with whatever tweening you do for the buton mc's, but I'd be guessing even more to try to tell you what to try. It will probably involve having to move your event listener assignment code and that could get a little tricky. It'll be easier for me to try it out than to take you thru each possible approach.
So see if you can save a CS3 copy of it (change the name so you don't lose your current file) and let me know... if you can compress/zip it, better chances the email servers will process it. If so, I'll send you my email address via a private message.

Thanks to all who responded. You are all absolutely correct. However, this Ipad was a gift to my wife who was dying of cancer in the hospital and wanted some entertainment. So I started it out with her Apple ID. After she passed away I moved from Sacramento to Austin and eventually proceeded to get the Apple ID changed from my wife's to mine. Meanwhile when she was in the hospital I opened an Itunes account in my name to buy movies for her. That was the first mistake.
Then during the move to Austin I lost track of the IPAD and later found it and tried to use support but could not remember the proper ID. Later the folks at the Apple store helped me create a new and novel Apple ID that was unfortunately unlike any other.
The botom line is that I am stuck with three Apple IDs and three passwords. I am told by Apple there is nothing they can do about this as IDs cannot be changed or destroyed. I can quit using them or start a new account but when I try to do that the system keeps remembering too many things from the past and resists.
Even if I sold this Ipad and bought a new one, the system memory is still there.
I think the real problem is that destop and laptop computers are totally owned by an individual and that individual can control logins and passwords to his liking. IPADs and similar Apple products are different in that the corporation has built in their own intrusion detection schemes because of the relation to Itunes.
One thing I thought about is to open a new Itunes account pretendding to be a new customer with my regular Apple ID. Perhaps I could do the same with Apple Support.

Unable to boot computer iMac intel after downloading and installing latest iPad software

I downloaded and installed the latest iPad software and my iMac will now not boot up. The iMac was getting a little slow just prior. Is one year old and this is the first problem. I have put the system DVD in and rolled back a couple weeks. Still no start up.

There is no rollback feature on the OSX disc (which version of OSX is this, Leopard, Snow Leopard?) so I am unable to understand this unless you are referring to a restore from Time Machine, is this what you did?

IMac Intel - After installing 10.6.5 imac freezes on startup

I installed 10.6.5 on my intel imac over the weekend and after a couple of uses my imac will no longer boot.
It gets to the gray screen with the loading spinner and after a few seconds the spinner freezes.
I've tried booting into safe mode. After the progress bar disappears the gray screen and spinner appears after a few more seconds the spinner freezes again.
I've reset the p-ram multiple times.
There is a cd in the drive which I can't remove. I tried booting into Open Firmware using Command-Option-O-F; but even that boot freezes.
Any ideas?

You can try getting the CD out by holding down the eject button while booting, if you can get the CD out then you can boot try booting from the Install Disc that came with the Mac. If you can't get is ejected you will probably need to take it in for service at an AASP.
I'm assuming you haven't been using a bootable clone like SuperDuper or Carbon Copy Cloner on an external HD. If you have then you could boot from that.

Migrate from iMac intel to powerbook G4

ok here is my question. i do most of my work on my imac. i take my powerbook with me. I would like to have alot of the things on my iMac, on my powerbook. If i migrate is it gonna replace programs like ilife 05 with ilife 06 and other programs that i have on the imac but not the powerbook?

Let me ask. Do you want EVERYTHING on the iMac, on the powerbook? If so, clone the whole thing over. Mount the PB to the iMac in target mode, erase it, and just clone over. If there is anything on the PB that you want, drag it to the iMac, first.
Now, go get a copy of Carbon Copy Cloner (Tiger version). This is perfect for an exact copy, and it is FREE.
Now, you will get a few that say that a clone of an iMac to a PB is ging to cause trouble. That is a totally wrong statement. I have moved from every machine to every other, and as long as the software is the latest, all will work fine. For example, you might be saying, "But my iMac doesn't have th "battery icon". As soon as you clone, and launch the PB, it will be there. Everything is loaded, and waiting for the hardware to require it.
Lastly, Kappy has offered suggestions. They may work for you and others. I am dead set against "synching". It just fails too many times (remember, you are asking software to "think"). I just got done today redoing a 350 page web site, because I trusted synching. .Mac is hardly better.
Take your pick how you want to do this.

I always use the 800. I plugged it in today and the hard drive start-up fine as usual. Without even looking on the desktop I opened Final Cut and it told me it could not locate my scratch disk (I always use the 500gb for FCP). I've tried different cable, and using the Firewire 400 instead of the 800. I don't know what to do, I had wanted to put some things on video for christmas and I don't have space on my startup disk to put video (hence the need for the external). Most persons that have installed an SSD that was smaller than the factory drive have been unable to use any HP Recovery Media with the SSD.
As an alternative, if you can still read the 25-digit Windows product key on the Microsoft COA affixed to the bottom the computer, you can install Windows 7 Home using this key. Please see "How to Install Windows 7 Without the Disc" for instructions on how to download Windows 7, create the installation media, and install Windows 7 using the 25 digit product key from the Microsoft COA on your computer. Please note that this installation will not have any of the HP customizations or HP value-added that was original installed on your computer. Also note that you will need to download and install most of the drivers from the HP G62t-350 CTO Notebook PC Drivers page.

IMac Crashes after reinstalling new O/S

After 3 years of great use my iMac 24 inch suddenly crashed, well theres always a first time, on restart I had either a grey screen, or a circle with a bar through it. Tried restart with Shift Key Pressed, same issue, restarted cmd-s no response. Reset the Pram several times no dice. Started from Install DVD tried DIsk Utilities, repaired disk, but message appeared in red said 'could not unmount disk', then coloured wheel appeared, spinning continuously, had to turn off Mac and restart with Install DVD again.
Decided to erase hard disk, this worked, installed new O/S and restarted. Now Mac was running Incredibly slowly, to rename a folder took about 5 mins, and then coloured wheel appeared - spinning continuously. Restarted again - grey screen, restarted from Install DVD tried DIsk Utilities, repair disk, fine, but repair disk permissions failed, coloured wheel spinning continuously, Mac stalled.
Decided to erase hard disk again using reset to Zeros (7 pass erase) after a few hours - success, installed fresh O/S, restarted again, fine. But again Mac is running Incredibly slowly, to copy a blank folder takes about 5 mins, and then coloured wheel appears and Mac stalls.
Restarted Mac using Hardware test, ran test, after about half an hour said hardware is fine!
On restarting again, grey screen with a circle with and bar through it again - Whaaat!
Whats happening, never encountered this before, could it be a Hardware problem, an intermittent faulty hard disk perhaps? The iMac does get hot after a while, could temperature be an issue?
Please can anybody help

2011 13" Air average cycles on battery after 1 year?

Just bought a used 2011 "13 for a super deal and the battery cycles say 495. Does this sound a bit high? Health is 89%. I haven't done a recalibration after doing a fresh install and pram and SMC reset. What are yours saying after a year of use?

Yea seems like it from my research on average cycles. Nothing bad though it is showing 6:30 hours after a 100% charge and lasts about that long. I got it for $700 and it is in perfect cosmetic and mechanical condition. So even with battery replacement factored in its not that much. How long does yours last after a years worth of use with light duty use?

I am forced to shut down computer after a few minutes of use because of pixelation that freezes up the monitor. Possible solutions?

You may have a problem with the video chip.
Here is how to tell...
Shutdown your machine. Hold down the shift key. Poweron. Bootup will be longer.
Wait awhile while you harddrive is being checked.

Running in Safe mode leaves out some video drivers. Which results in your machine not using advanced video hardware. As luck would have it, you can run the safe mode video drivers in normal mode.

Migration assistant works fine "most of the time". I have used it several times with no issues. The method offered by "Kappy" is essentially a manual process for accomplishing the same thing and is probably "safer" than using MA. If MA works, you will be happy. If it does not, you will think "I should have done it Kappy's way!". The choice is really yours...
Personally, I have never had any problems with MA, system updates, etc. But some have so it's always a risk to advise someone to "go for it" when you know the possibility exists for problems to occur. They are, after all, computers.....
PS Give yourself 50 points for having a backup to begin with!

I purchased my imac intel 21" 3-4 weeks ago and in the 2nd week i faced an issue with the machine. When i switched on in, there was a fan noise and a white screen. The machine had hanged. I reported the problem and gave to the service centre. After testing for a week, they said that there is no problem with the imac. Again i faced the same problem after receiving it from the service centre. They again tested the machine for 3-4 days and reported as no problem with the machine. Couple of days back, I received the machine from the service centre, and on the same day when i switched it on, there are flickers in the display. Please help me solve the issue. I am from India. The service here is very bad.

Yes I agree with seventy one. It's common sense to do this, especially now. I would also contact AppleCare and report this issue with them, it will get documented and you will have a caseID that you can refer to when talking to them in the future should this issue go one.
Be polite with AppleCare and your AASP. Hopefully everyone is being honest and trying to help you and not what might appear to be the opposite.
Patience is a virtue, but I thoroughly understand your frustration.
Let us know how it goes, we are here to help in whatever way we can.
I encourage you to contact AppleCare to report this experience and get their recommendations. There is an expectation that you should have that AppleCare is there to help you as a customer. I am sure they will too!
