Migrating to iPhoto from Picasa (PC) - Automatic Album Creation?

Hey everyone,
I'm migrating my photo library from my PC using Picasa to iPhoto finally. My folder structure is that each album has its own folder. With close to 100 albums, I'd like to just have them import into iPhoto as albums. I notice that if I drag an individual folder into iPhoto that it creates an album and roll for that folder. However, if I do a folder with multiple subfolders in it, only ONE album is created (while a roll is created for each subfolder)
Basically, does anyone know of a way to either:
1) Creates an album from each film roll automatically
2) Import multiple folders, creating individual albums
Thanks so much!

iPhotoTool 1.1 will do what you want.

TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've written an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

What a mess, 20,000 photos.  How can I restore my folders?

Restore the library from Time Machine as shown in this screenshot:
Then open the library with iPhoto.  No importing necessary.

  • How do I stop iphoto from creating events automatically when I import photos from an external hard drive?

IPhoto is creating events automatically when I import photos and when I merge events and then go to finder>all images, I see iphoto has created several copies of each picture....I try to delete the extra copies but then the albums or events also get affected, even if there is one copy of each photo left in all images...have someone had this problem?

You don't have a problem at all.
IPhoto is creating events automatically when I import photos
This is how iPhoto works. Every photo is in an Event. Events are the basic organisation of the Library. Every import means at least one new Event. Yes you can merge Events after import and so on, but there is at least one Event created at each import.
I see iphoto has created several copies of each picture....
No it hasn't. It hs created versions of the photos, not copies. There will be a couple of thumbnails  for viewing in the iPhoto Window plus the Master and then a edited version for pics that are modified. The icons for each of these may be similar but they are not copies - for a start they are different sizes - and all are required for iPhoto to work.
    go to finder>all images
Don't. This is simply a list of all the images on your computer. It makes no account or allowance for the purpose of these images. Really, if you're using iPhoto ignore this because if you
I try to delete the extra copies
Then you are trashing your Library.
So, this is how iPhoto works, there is no problem and stay away from All Images.

  • How can I stop iPhoto from trying to import albums from MoblieMe?

Since 1 July iPhoto tries to import albums from MobileMe upon each start-up. I never created any album in MobileMe so the attempt to imort fails. I can then only click 'Retry' or 'Remind me later'. There is no option to tell iPhoto to not import any album.
Any idea how to get out of this loop?

Close iTunes before switching profiles or disable fast user switching.

  • Migrating iTunes, iPhoto from external drives to new iMac

We've finally decided to upgrade from our trusty Power Mac G4 tower (10.4.11) we've had since 2002 to a new 21.5-inch iMac. It arrives tomorrow.
I'm already anticipating problems migrating to the new system, tho'. The 20Gb startup disk seemed science-fiction large in 2002, but obviously we quickly ran out of space. Currently, our iPhoto library lives on a second internal SATA HD, and iTunes on an external FireWire drive.
What's going to be the best way to migrate all that stuff to the new iMac's 2Tb (science fiction numbers, again!) drive? Will the migration assistant find the iPhoto and iTunes files on those other disks?

    den.thed wrote:
Open iTunes on your new iMac and go to File > Add to Library then navigate to the iTunes library on the External HD and hit the Choose button.
Do the same for iPhoto File > Add to Library while your connected to the G4.
Just for clarity's sake, you're talking about selecting the iTunes/iPhoto media folders, right? Not selecting each file individually, I hope.
And from what you're saying, it doesn't sound like Migration Assistant is going to pull anything over from my old iTunes or iPhoto settings, much less media stored on external/expansion drives, is that correct? I'll have to drag those files over via Ethernet, I imagine.

  • Automatic album creation a mess.

    PSE8. with Windoze7.
Sorry If I am being dumb, or have not read the manual... if I could but find it.
I clicked on organize pointed it a file tree that was created by Presto Page Manager, and off it went like a machine possesed, it grabbed everything on the tree, did not copy duplicates, and generally had a fine old time. But completely ignored the folders, and just took all the folder contents.
The end result is I have a few thousand pictured all visible in the same place, with the date contolling its position in the viewer.
Can I select a file to delete the record of this album, and start again?
Is there an add them folder by folder method?
Thanks in advance for any input.

You are totally working against the grain here. If you want to use folders as your main way to organize photos, you will be very unhappy with the organizer. The whole concept behind the organizer is that you let go of the idea of caring about where your photos are stored and then you use tags to organize and search for them instead.
An album is not like a folder, not really. It's a collection of photos you put together to use for some purpose, like online display or a slideshow.
First of all, let's start with terms:
You keep track of your organizer photos with a catalog, which is a database containing all your tagging information. Generally speaking, adobe recommends only one catalog for all your photos, since you can't search across multiple catalogs. When you imported your photos, they went into a catalog, not into an album, usually.
Once your photos are in the catalog, you assign tags to them to make it easy to find them again. You can assign as many tags as you want to each photo. To find the photos later, you search for them by tags.
You can put your photos into albums, too, but an album isn't necessarily at all the same as a folder. You can put photos from many different folders into one album and each time you click the album's name, you'll see all the photos in that group.
Once your photos are in the organizer, you must use the organizer to move them around, if you need to do that for some reason, or else the organizer won't know where they went.
There are some video tutorials under the Help menu that may make it easier to understand how the organizer works.

  • How to migrate photo library from windows into iPhoto '09

I have spent altogether too much time fretting about this transition and searching for solutions online, and I'm certain someone else has figured this out.
I just switched from Windows to a mac, and I'm wanting to move my photo library into iPhoto. I already have my photos separated into folders by event (I used Picasa for Windows). Is there any way to get those 312 folders to translate into iPhoto Events? And for the hail mary, is there a way to import any Picasa data into iPhoto? I've found iPhotoExpert to basically do that the other way around (i.e. migrating from iPhoto to Picasa), but I'm looking to migrate to iPhoto from Picasa.
    Anybody done this successfully?

I realize iPhoto is not a file manager, I've gotten over that part. At this point I would just like it to recognize different folders as different events. I feel like that is a little feature that would go a long way, not only for migrating libraries like in this case, but also in the future.
I will often create separate folders within my camera's menus for different events, so that when I import the photos it makes it easier to distinguish the different events, even if they span multiple days. If only there was a checkbox next to "imported items from finder" called "treat folders as events when importing" that applied recursively to folders imported.
Update: I took a leap of faith and dragged a portion of my library into iPhoto (after unchecking that "Autosplit Imported items from Finder" checkbox) and it did exactly what I was hoping it would! Turns out it does apply recursively, which is really handy. I can just drag my entire "Pictures" folder with all of my photos nicely organized into events by folder into iPhoto, and it recognizes each folder as a separate event without having to drag each folder separately! hooray! I ended up doing so with the "Photos" icon selected in the sidebar, I don't know if that made a difference or not. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction!

  • How to prevent iPhoto to make an automatic event when importing from Photo stream

    Hi everyone,
My question is related to the Photo stream functionality in iPhoto.
Is possible to prevent iPhoto from making an automatic event when I import a photo from Photo stream. It is really annoying because of the fact that I use "events" for keeping my important photo's together (as many of you do I asume). Ofcourse after importing I can just delete it from my event section but is there a way to prevent it?
    Thanks.

No. Photostream creates an Event for each month.
iPhoto has many other tools for managing and categorising your Photos.
I use Events simply as big buckets of Photos: Spring 08, July - Nov 06 are typical Events in my Library. I use keywords and Smart Albums extensively. I title the pics broadly.
    I keyword on a
    Who
    What
Where basis (The When is in the photos's Exif metadata). I also rate the pics on a 1 - 5 star basis.
Using this system I can find pretty much find any pic in my 40k library in a couple of seconds.
So, for example, I have a batch of pics titled 'Seattle 08' and a  typical keywording might include: John, Anne, Landscape, mountain, trees, snow. With a rating included it's so very easy to find the best pics we took at Mount Rainier.
    File -> New Smart Album
    set it to 'All"
    title contains Seattle
    keyword is mountain
    keyword is snow
    rating is 5 stars
Or, want a chronological album of John from birth to today?
    New Smart Album
    Keyword is John
Set the View options to Sort By Date Ascending
    Want only the best pics?
add Rating is greater than 4 stars
The best thing about this system is that it's dynamic. If I add 50 more pics of John  to the Library tomorrow, as I keyword and rate them they are added to the Smart Album.
In the end, organisation is about finding the pics. The point is to make locating that pic or batch of pics findable fast. This system works for me.

  • How to prevent iPhoto from importing automatically

There are times I want to load photos onto my computer but do not want iPhoto to import them.
How can I prevent iPhoto from importing photos automatically when photos are loaded onto my computer?
Thanks for your help and suggestions.

    Matt,
That's quite a full trash can. To clarify, we're talking about the iPhoto Trash at the bottom of the Source Pane (left column) and not the regular Finder trash can that lives on your Desktop, right? If there are photos you wish to save in the iPhoto trash, drag them to the word Library at the top of the Source Pane and they will be restored to the library. When you're ready you can try to empty the trash: from the menu bar choose iPhoto > Empty trash. However, you may have trouble with so many files at once. If the trash won't empty you'll have to move the files back to the library and delete them in smaller batches (say 500) until they're all gone.
Where was the iPhoto library recovered photos folder? Did you see it in the Source Pane of the iPhoto window, or was it inside the iPhoto Library folder in the Finder?
    Regards.

  • Import (v. 7.1.5) iPhotos from old iMac to new iMac (v. 9.2) using Migration Mgr. over fire wire.  All photos (  many dups) appeared in EVENTS and PHOTOS in the new Mac – but NO ALBUMS.

Attempted to import 6.5 GB of (v. 7.1.5) iPhotos from old iMac to new iMac (v. 9.2) using Migration Mgr. over fire wire.  All photos (plus many dups) appeared in EVENTS and PHOTOS in the new Mac – but NO ALBUMS.  I read a previous response to a similar question -- to copy the pictures library to the new computer.  How best to do that?

There's actually an option to iPhoto Library Manager that makes this all almost work flawlessly (and work well enough for me). With the exception of Photo Albums that the pictures are part of, if you select "Library > Rebuild Library..." and then select "Scavange Orphaned Photos" check box, then it will put all the Photos and Movies into the "Scavanged Photos" album. It matches the modified pictures to their originals. It preserves all the event names and photo groupings. All the meta-data I could spot check it got right (although with 44k pictures, I only checked a few). If you fail to select this option, however, it will find no pictures at all when it goes to rebuild the library (this was true of the small test libraries I tried as well as the big, monster 280GB library I just finished converting). The conversion process took 5 hours to run, but in the end produced a library my new iPhoto can read and that I can interact with. I'll be suggesting to the iPhoto Library Manager folks a notation that would estimate the number of Orphaned Photos and display that number as a hint to the user that the option would be useful.
Edited: Thanks to Old Toad and LarryHN for their help in finding which of the many options to transition this library to 9.5.1 I needed to use. Sorry if I took my frustration of the past several months out on you guys for generously trying to help me.

  • How do I export photos from iPhoto to Picasa web albums?

I have my photos stored on iPhoto, but can no longer export them to my Picasa (Google+) web albums.
Apple have removed the upload option to Picasa from within iPhoto, and Google's uploader software most online forums talk about is no longer available, so I'm stuck!
    Many thanks!

You can export from iPhoto to the FInder and upload from there.
    This User Tip
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-4921
has details of the options in the Export dialogue.
BTW: Apple removed nothing. They updated their application to 64 bit and Google haven't bothered to update their plug-in in years. Why they haven't is something you'll need to ask them.

  • The best way to import photos from Picasa to iPhoto

    Hi,
Many of my friends share their pictures online using picasa. Sometimes, I'd like to copy these pictures to keep a backup offline. As a software, I use iPhoto; not picasa. What is the best way to import pictures from picasa to iPhoto?
I first tried to subscribe to the RSS feed using iPhoto and then copy the pictures from there to my library, but then the dates of the pictures are set wrong: instead of indicating when the picture was shot, it indicates some other date (I guess it indicates the date when the picture was uploaded to picasa).
Then I decided to install the software picasa.app. From the webalbum of my friends, I could download the pictures directly to picasa.app. Then I exported them to the desktop, and from there imported them to iPhoto. The dates where set correctly, but I lost all the titles and comments of the pictures.
Do you have any method to download the pictures while keeping both the dates and the titles correctly?
    Thanx!

There is a direct option in Organizer which lets you import from iPhoto. This is under Import dropdown menu in left panel.
If you are importing from iPhoto'09, your Tags, Albums Events, captions, star rating would also get imported apart from your media. This works differently for iPhoto'011 where you can get only the media to the Organizer,
Just a couple of things to know:
    1. If in iPhoto preferences, you have chosen to create copies of your photos in iPhoto library and your library hence refers to the media store inside the library package, then on importing from iPhoto, Organizer would create copies of all those media under your pictures folder. That means, it would not corrupt your iPhoto package or modify it in any way.
    2. However, if in iPhoto, you are organizing by using references to original location on your Hard drive i.e. you are not creating copies of media in iPhoto library then on importing from iPhoto to Organizer, the Organizer would also use the same references and would not create copies of the media.
    Hope that helps!

  • Import photos from picasa to iphoto

can I organize in albums and not have all phots labeled as what tey imported as?

Picasa the application or Picasa the Web service?
There is no direct way to move from Picasa to iPhoto. I'm not sure what the export options in Picasa, but what would work is if you can export an album into a folder drag that folder to the Album heading in the iPhoto window. iPhoto will import the photos and make an album of the same name as the folder.
There are other ways - like keywording and smart albums, for instance - but they depend on the export possibilities of whereever you are coming from.

  • Migrating from Picasa to Elements

I have always used picasa, and have many thousands of pics on Picasa. I want to move my entire workflow to Elements 7 on windows 7.
Is there any simple way to migrate Picasa albums to Elements?

    Interesting Query...
I myself have migrated from Picasa to Photoshop Elements long time back.... But I had few images that time.. I have one solution for you if you were organizing through Folders and if you want those folders as Albums in Photoshop Elements...
    Simple workflow is:
    - Launch Organizer
    - Import all the files into a new Catalog of Organizer
    - Go to Folder View
    - Select one Folder.. you get an optoon to create instant Album >> Just click on that option and an album will be created. This album will have all the files in that folder and same name will be assigned to that Album...
If files are not organized in folder, there is no standard workflow to migrate from Picasa to Photoshop Elements..
And I have used Photoshop Elements 7 .. Now converted PSE7 catalog of 14000 images (Most of them are NEF) to PSE8 and it works fine for me :-)
I am very happy with this great Product having rich features.... Ohh, Did I miss to mention that Face Recognition in 8th release of Photoshop elements rock!!!

  • Can I migrate my photos from my iphone 6 to iphoto on my computer?

I read this on the Apple website:
Your photos and metadata from iPhoto will be migrated to Photos. Books, Journals and Slideshows will be converted to albums containing only photos. iPhoto for iOS is not supported on devices running iOS 8 or later.
I am especially troubled by the underlined statement. Can I migrate my photos from my iphone 6 to iphoto on my computer?

The key part of the Apple quote is …
Your photos and metadata from iPhoto will be migrated to Photos
Photos is the app in Yosemite that replaces iPhoto.
If iPhoto fails to work with iOS 8 try opening Image Capture on your Mac, that should at least allow you to import into a folder for dragging to iPhoto.
I don't have a device with iOS8 to test, so try iPhoto if you have it available - it may still work on Mavericks. iTunes may also still take photos from iPhoto & sync them to the device.
