Migrating to lion

What are the issues in migrating to lion from snow leopard?
I know appleworks will no longer work.  Over five years, I've accumulated about 2,000 appleworks documents.  The overwhelming majority of these are word processing files.  I just want to verify past discussion; is it correct that pages will handle appleworks word processing files?
I'll go over my appleworks files to see if I need to open other files before appleworks goes away.  Does this sound reasonable?
Are there known products that don't work with lion? In particular,I'm thinking about macspeech dictate?
If all else fails, is it possible to retain the ability to boot in snow leopard?
Are there any other issues?
Thanks.

Here's an unofficial status list:  http://roaringapps.com/apps:table

With a second partition, yes.  However, be aware that while you can shrink a Lion OSX partition, you cannot expand one via Disk Utility at this time.  Perhaps in a future update.
So, installing Lion on an external HD might be wise.
When you do get Lion, after downloading but before installing, you might want to do this:  Making a Lion Install disc or partition.
Are there any other issues?
But of course.
Here's a few changes and issues:  Changes in Lion from Snow Leopard.

  • Migration to Lion

Getting ready to migrate to Lion or possibly Mountain Lion depending on date.
Have XSAN 2.2 on OSX 10.6.8.  2 MDC servers.  The backup MDC is also DNS and OD using ACLs, as well as network share.
    10 Adobe graphic clients
    4 FCP 7 clients
    Promise Array with expansion chassis.
    Qlogic 5602 fiber switches.
Anyone done this yet?  Any tips?
    Upgrade or clean builds?
What happens to licenses in Xsan Admin since Lion comes with licenses?
    Thanks.

While it will be double the work, I would suggest staying away from a new OS until you (and the community) had a chance to figure it all out.  Also, see here:  http://www.apple.com/osx/whats-new/features.html that Apple has announced that Mountain will contain Xsan 3.  So there is yet another wrinkle in your plan.  There is next to no public details about this version.
Snow (2.2.x) to Lion (2.3) should be a relatively easy migration.  However, I suggest some of the obvious:
    1:  Have a confirmed backup
2:  Make sure you estimate the time properly so as to not interrupt workflow - calculate for the worst
3:  Remove all your clients from the SAN and upgrade them to Lion independently of SAN interaction
4:  Stop the volume, validate it with cvfsck
5:  Consider running the update on both controllers concurrently or remove the backup from the san so there is no interference.
Now, if you have the luxury, a nuke and pave often makes the most sense as you can ensure that the system is the cleanest.  It can also reset the san volume and eliminate any pent up fragmentation.

I have an iMac and a MacBook with Intel Core 2 Duo processors. I realize that this is within the stated requirements for Lion.  However was wondering if by migrating to Lion this will result in too much demand on processor resources, thus a slower machine than using Snow Leopard?

Which iMac?  Which Macbook?   Both have had several model
itertations, even within the framework of a Core2Duo processor.
With that said, I have an early 2009 iMac 24", with 2.66 GHz
Core2Duo with 8 gig of RAM, and in my opinion, seems to be running
    smoother and faster with Lion.

  • HT1338 How to update Logic Express 9.0.1 after migrating to Lion?

I just migrated from Snow Leopard to Lion and now can't open or upgrade Logic Express 9.0.1 to a Lion version. How can I upgrade the software to the latest version? Software update doesn't show anything. I've migrated using my Time Machine backup from my Macbook running latest Snow Leopard.

You just need to update your App to the newer version that is compatible with Lion.

  • Best way to migrate/setup Lion to mountain Lion

I just bought a new/refurb MBP from the Apple Store. It's the most recent model and one of the reasons I went this route was because the information given on the Apple site said that refurbs ship with the OS that was on it when it was built, which since it is a June 2012 model should have been Lion, and I was eligiable for the Mountain Lion upgrade. Well they upgraded the system before it shipped. Bummer, since I wanted to use Setup Assistant to cleanly build the new MBP exactly like it's predecessor. Unfortunately I couldn't see what OS is on the new MBP until I started it up and went through the initial setup.
I am concerned with some Adobe CS3 products and their compatability with M Lion, so I didn't want to take the chance they wouldn't work well or at all in M. Lion. What recourse do I have now? I've had migration issues in the past, and permission issues with the old MBP when going from Snow Leopard to Lion, and don't want to have to deal with that again. Any suggestions? If I had a CD of Lion, I would just revert, but alas...that last OS that came to me on CD was Snow Leopard. I bought Lion as a download online. Can I still use that?
    So many questions.

Connect the two Macs with firewire cable, and follow the prompt in the new Mac setup to get to migrate from an older mac to a new one.

  • Snow Leopard Time machine migration to Lion problem?

I have a time machine backup of a mac with snow leopard that I made back in June. I want to put it on my new mac with Lion but it won't have this update - http://www.cultofmac.com/105225/if-you-want-to-migrate-from-snow-leopard-to-lion -tomorrow-you-need-this-update/ -
I don't have the old mac to install this update on and update my time machine backup so what can I do??
    any suggestions please?

Thanks Pondini, I was concerned that my Snow Leopard backups may not be compatible with Time Machine on Lion and I was going to use the Migration Assistant instead of the Setup Assistant. I have the WD NAS which I'm aware currently has AFP issues like many other NAS drives. I'm holding thumbs that by the time I get my new iMac WD would have released the firmware update so I don't have any issues.
WD NAS users can setup a notification at the following link for when the new firmware becomes available:
    http://wdc.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/7081
Failing which you can always try this workaround from Alexander Wilde - http://www.alexanderwilde.com/2011/04/os-x-lion-connection-error-with-afp-and-wo rkaround/

  • How can I migrate a lion wiki to mountain lion?

    Hi,
My lion server is chrashed and not running any more. I can not do an export of the wiki with wikiadmin.
I have a postgress database Dump (sql-commands from time-machine backup of the lion server) and a dump of my filedata folder from a lion server. How can I manage to get the data into my mountain lion wiki.
I just tried to simply import the postgress data (psql --username=_postgres collab -f filename.sql), which is not working. The import works fine, but when starting the wiki server, I have sql error in the log.
I tried to use the wikiadmin migrate like this:
    sudo wikiadmin --username=_postgres migrate -g magento -r /Library/Server/Wiki/FileData
    Usage: wikiadmin migrate/rebuildSearchIndex/updateSchema/fixPermissions/resetQuicklooks [--logLevel emergency/alert/critical/error/warning/notice/info/debug] ( --sourceRoot PATH | -r PATH TO WIKI REPOSITORY ) (-g WIKINAME)
wikiadmin export (-g WIKINAME | --parentGUIDToExport GUID) (--exportPath PATH)
           wikiadmin import (--importPATH PATH)
    What is the parentGUIDToExport?
    Thx Michael

The process is quite simple, sort of. The two apps have no way to communicate so essentially it's a two step process:
Export from Elements to the Finder
Import from the Finder to iPhoto.
IPhoto will import what you can get out of Elements but you'll need to consult the Elements Help for sorting that out. I strongly suggest that you do a couple of trail runs to see what works and doesn't.

  • Users report no email messages after migration from Lion Server to a clean Mavericks Server with Migration Assistant

We have a Mac Mini server running Lion Server.
We bought a new Mac Mini server and installed OS X Mavericks and the Server app onto it.
We then ran Migration Asssitance on the Mavericks machine and migrated from the Lion server in target disk mode.
The migration seemed to run OK and all the user accounts seem to be working, however users are reporting that there are no email messages in their mailboxes.
Confirmed this behaviour by adding their accounts to mail (via IMAP) on a separate laptop.
Did we miss something? Is there an extra step to move the email service data?
Any insights would be grately appreciated.
    Many thanks, Tom.

If your saved emails did not come across properly in the Migration, you can always export the mail from the old computer and import it into the new computer manually:

  • Image Capture app not working since migrating to Lion.

Image Capture app isn't working so well since migrating to 10.7 Lion. Now when I try to scan, Image Capture hangs with a "Crop and Rotate" message. It doesn't import into iPhoto. Anyone else run into this type of problem?

Apple doesn’t routinely monitor the discussions. These are mostly user to user discussions.
Send Apple feedback. They won't answer, but at least will know there is a problem. If enough people send feedback, it may get the problem solved sooner.

  • Migration to lion from tiger

I am attempting to migrate from a tiger OS 10.4 Macbook to a Lion Macbook Pro.  Everytime that migration is initiated my Pro states that I need to run an update on my Tiger Macbook.  Once I attempt to update there is no update available.  How do I make THIS **** WORK??!

  • How to stop background isync-processes after migrating to Lion 10.7.4?

    Hey.
Ever since I migrated (using Migration assistent and a LAN-connection) my data and prefs from my old MB (Leopard) to my new MBP (Lion) I get an error message saying that there was an error while trying to connect to a certain server. I believe the server the MBP wants to be connected to is the IP from my old MB that I used to migrate the data.
(It says: "There has been an error while connecting to the server '169.254.9.91'. – The server might not exist or ist not availible at this time. Check the server name or the IP-adress as well as the network connection and try it again.")
Usually the error just appears out of nowhere, however it can be reproduced e.g. when I connect my iPhone to the MBP.
As far as I can see, the console shows  that iSync (which I know is no longer used in Lion) wants to establish that connection. In this case it's the AppleMobileDeviceHelper, but also iCalExternalSync or DashboardClient turn up in the console.

How can I stop this error that seems to slow down the whole system?
    What I did so far:
I already reinstalled Lion and used TimeMachine to get my data back but the error still appears.
I also deleted all files having iSync in their name and deleted the list of the "recent servers".
I reconnected my old MB with my new MBP once again using the old IP and disconnected properly.
If you need to know anything else, just ask.

  • Some ,mail messages won't load after migrating to Lion

I've migrated Mail from Snow Leopard to Lion on a new computer but from time to time some messages won't load. It's a real pain because I only dicover it when I go to read a message I want to read. Anyone have any ideas?

Mail, the application, should not cannot contain any message data assets. The Mail application must sit in the Applications folder, and be usable to every User Account on the Mac, and not just yours (understand you might be the only user, but making a point).
Mail, the folder of data for just your emails, should properly be at Home/Library/Mail.
Let me ask again -- in the Applications folder is there an Icon for Mail, and is it the Icon of a postage stamp, or is it perhaps the Icon of a folder?
However, let me note, that now that I have booted back into Snow Leopard, and used Get Info on the Mail Icon in the Applications folder, it is reported to be 77.5 MB! Looking at it from other boot volume (Leopard) does not see all the elements of its "package" apparently. My apologies.
Now it is time for a different test -- Create a New User Account, and as that New User launch Mail and try setting up one new email account - if POP select to leave messages on the server. See the following if not familiar with adding a new user account:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.5/en/8235.html
The reason for doing this is to test the Mail app itself, and not to permanently switch to a new user account. Tell me if the behavior continues in that New User Account with Mail?
    Ernie
