Migrating to new Mac, keep some apps in the old.

I have just migrated from my old MacBook to a new MacBookPro.
I have a bunch of applications buyed trought the AppStore which are now living happy in my new MacBookPro.
Now I would like to do a clean install in my old MacBook and try to sell it second hand. Some of the apps purchased have no utility in the new mac (OSX Lion and new versions of iPhoto and iMovie) since I have now new versions preinstalled in the new mac, but will be valuable in the old one (and I have paid for them).
Is there any problem if I use the same Apple Id in AppStore at the same time in both computers. Will I be able to download again in the old Mac those apps not installed in the new one? Since the versions I have are probably older then current ones in the AppStore, will this be a problem?

If you had accepted the iLife apps on the older mac, you will be creating a problem for the next owner, who won't be able to accept those apps. You can't get around it through a clean install.
You could do the future owner a favour and contact iTS to unadopt ownership from that old Mac.

  • HT4889 How do I get the files that transferred from my old mac to this new mac to all merge so I am not using 2 set ups? In other words, I have stuff on the "new mac" and everything else on the "old mac" even though they are on the same computer.

I need to merge my files that were transferred from my old mac to my new mac - for some reason I now have 2 separate setups on my new mac.  I need everything merged to one account.
    Thanks!

Did you use Migration Assistant? If you set up your new Mac first, you created a user account and when you used MA later, it transferred over the old one. The only way to avoid that is to use Setup Assistant at the beginning of the setup. I used MA once and spent a long time getting rid of duplicates - you can either do that manually or start over: use recovery (Command + R or Command + Option + R keys) during startup, go to Utilities > Disk Utility, erase your disk and download/install again. While going through the setup, use Setup Assistant - it will port over your one and only user account rather than create another.

  • After Migration to new Mac Pro, intermittent slow downs, SROD's

I started with a my intel mac mini, Leopard OS was installed on an external Firewire drive, most applications were installed on another partition of that same drive. I bought a new mac pro 8 core, and an additional firewire external drive that I set up as my Time Machine drive on my old mac mini. I did a full backup of my old mac mini system and then attached the time machine drive and the other external hard drive to my new mac pro. I used the migration assistant to transfer files to my new mac pro. However, now there appears to be something occuring between my internal mac pro hard drive and the old external hard drive from my mac mini. When using some applications, Itunes, Logic Pro, Firefox, the ap will hang and appears to be trying to access files from the old external drive. I hope I'm being clear with what the issue is. I'm thinking duplicate files on this external drive and my internal drive are causing some problems? I need to know how to repair the issue, and preserve my data files?

Thanks for your quick response. I know I've been somewhat confusing here. I'm running the latest Snow Leopard update on my mac pro now.
Then please update your profile, as it still shows the mini and Leopard.
And I'll ask a Host to move this to the Snow Leopard > Time Machine forum.
All the aps and data were migrated onto the internal HD in the mac pro, and the aps and files and directory structures, etc. are still also on the external drive that used to comprise the OS of my mac mini. I'm thinking that may be part of the issue, but I'm new to Mac and not certain of that or how to fix the issues.
Depending on how you did that, I'm not sure everything on those partitions got on to the new Mac's HD. Check that first, via the Finder.
Let's start with iTunes and/or iPhoto.
First see if you have the same stuff in both places. Use the Finder to see how large each is on the external HD, and compare that to the iTunes and iPhoto folders on your internal HD.
If they're not on your internal HD at all, use these instructions to move them:
    Moving your iTunes Music folder
    Moving your iPhoto library
If the versions on the external are newer than the ones on your internal, delete the ones on the internal and use those instructions to move from the external to the internal.
But don't delete the versions on the external just yet. Eject and disconnect it, and make sure everything's fine. It won't hurt to leave the data there for a while, especially as long as it's disconnected.
If the music or photos on your HD are the same, or newer, hold down the Option key while starting iTunes or iPhoto. That will give you a prompt where you can select which one you want to use.
Once you've selected the ones you want, eject and disconnect the external. Then use as many apps as you can, to see if everything works properly and all your data is found.
Without knowing what other apps you have, and how they work, I can't tell in advance whether any others will be looking for the external drive. If you get error messages, you'll have to deal with each app that seems lost.
I'd be inclined to keep the old external "on the shelf" for quite a while, just to be sure nothing got missed.
Have you started doing Time Machine backups of the new Mac yet? When you do, you'll get a prompt about whether to "re-use" the Mini's backups. See #B5 in the Time Machine - Troubleshooting *User Tip,* also at the top of this forum. You probably want to select "Re-use," especially if there's a considerable amount of space on your TM drive.

  • IPod behaviour after migration to new Mac

Hi. I recently bought a new Mac (I'm typing from an old one!) and used the Migration Assistant to move my account from a machine a work. I then copied the music files from this home machine to the new machine. Finally I exported the library from this machine and imported it onto the new machine. (I wanted to merge some of the account functions of my home and work machines on the new machine).
My problem is that both this machine at home and the new machine want to sync the iPod but are now not quite in sync (e.g. ratings, play counts, LastFM scrobbles, etc.) and this causes some hassle. I basically want to automatically sync with the new machine and for the old machine to ignore the iPod. However if I set the iPod to manual management on this old machine, the setting is also seen on the new machine. Is there some way round this?..
The third machine (the one at work) behaves differently - it sees it as synced to a different machine and so gives the dialog asking what to do. I think therefore a more specific question is can I make the iTunes settings on the new machine and the old home machine look like -different- machines? I'm happy to delve into the library XML if need be.
(All three machines are authorised to my iTunes Store account but I don't think this matters)
    Thanks,
    Jeremy Morley

You can always switch the iPod to manually manage for connecting up to the other two computer then when you connect back to the main computer where you master library is, switch it back to Auto Sync. You won't lose anything and it only takes a checkbox change and <Apply> button to change it.
As a side note, if you switch the iPod to manually manage for the other computers, you don't need to have libraries on those. Just have iTunes installed and when you plug in your manually managed iPod, you can play your library directly out of the iPod via the iTunes app. A great trick for having iTunes on a work computer without loading it up with a big media library.
Side note #2, if you format the iPod in Windows format, then ALL computers (Mac and Windows) can use it. If the iPod is in Mac format, then Windows computers won't be able to access it.
    Cheers,
    Patrick

  • IPhoto Migration to new Mac--MAJOR ISSUES

We just got a new iMac to replace our previous 2006 iMac that was running Mountain Lion. It had already been determined by a Mac repair person that our old iPhoto library was corrupted and that we couldn't migrate that Library to the new Mac. Rather, we'd need to drag the "Originals" folder to the new Mac. Note: Due to the amount of photos we have, we store our photos on an external hard drive. (Also, nevermind that the 35K photos that were so carefully organized into folders and albums over the past 8 years would be lost). Fine. That's what we did. Major issues ensued:
    1. Everytime I've imported photos from my iPhone over the past two years, random photos (mostly those that I edited in Apps like hipstogram) multiplied and were reimported EVERYTIME I plugged my phone in the Mac. There are, like 10 copies of certain photos.
    2. Many photos are somehow duplicated, but in different "rolls." How do I even find the duplicates? They're dated when they were imported, not created. Grrr...
    3. During the import to the new Mac, an error message let us know that 795 photos were not imported. Which ones? Don't know.
    4. The WORST issue of all, a lot of the metadata on the photos is incorrect. Some is user error (Canon camera had the year as 2007 when it was really 2008), but a lot of photos imporated from the iphone over the years are saying 1/20/1980 or another nonsensical date. Or the photos are dated as the date of import, not when they're taken. So, not only did I lose the organization of the library, the metadata is incorrect. For many of the 35 thousand photos over 12 years.
The result? A jumbled nightmare of "Events" that aren't in chronological order in the new iPhoto.
Sidenote: Why can I navigate to the Originals photo files in the old Mac, but I cannot navigave via the finder to the Originals in the new Mac? The only way I can get there is to click "Go to original file" from iPhoto...and even then, its location is unclear.
I don't know what to do from here. The options as I see them:
    1. Clean up the duplicates/metadata in the old Originals folder and re-import the folder to the new Mac.
    2. Start with the current debacle on the new Mac and painstackingly reorganize all the folders (cleaning up, correcting dates).
Another sidenote: Is there a way to delete a photo in iPhoto and truly delete the file? I started deleting duplicates on the new iMac and I have to navigate to the original file (in its mysterious location), delete it, and then delete the thumbnail in iPhoto. This may take a year or two to complete. There has a be a better way. Help.....me.....

Our Mac person determined that our library was corrupted because various attempts to rebuild the cache/library were unsuccessful (spinning wheel and error messages).
try to reproduce this on your old computer nad report the exact error messages (and look at the iPhoto menu ==> about iPhoto to get the version)
So, from what I understand, the best path forward would be to fix/rebuild the old library to be able to migrate it to the new machine
    Yes
I do have a question about deleting photos in iPhoto. How do I handle eliminating duplicate photos in an iPhoto library (new or old)? My understanding is that deleting an image in iPhoto does not delete the actual file (in originals or masters or where ever it is housed on the Mac). Does this matter? Why would deleting photos in iPhoto cause corruption of the library?
Duplicates - IPLM does them very well
And most certainly deleting using iPhoto properly does totally remove the photo form iPhoto and from th ehard drive
Deleting in iPhoto is trivial - select a photo in an event, press the delete key and empty the iPhoto trash (do not let the iPhoto trash get large since sometimes iPhoto does not handle large trash bins well) - on later versions then you need to empty the system trash too
Do that and the photo is gone from iPhoto and from the Mac (given that you have a corrupted library past deletes might not have worked - from a properly working library it will work)
Deleting using iPhoto will not corrupt anything
    BUT you stated
I started deleting duplicates on the new iMac and I have to navigate to the original file (in its mysterious location), delete it,
That is NOT using iPhoto to delete photos - it is using the finder to go directly into the contents of the iPhoto library and makeing changes  - that corrupts the database

I have the same problem. It is only with tv shows and only with programs I have downloaded after the software update.
Apple support sent me the above link too....but it doesn't solve the problem...my computer is authorized and the content is in my library and will play on my Mac air, but it will not sync the tv shows, it keeps saying my computer isn't authorized for it.
No answers here, but you are definitely not alone with this issue.

I'll venture that your problem here is that you're using two very different versions of Mac OS X.  The USB adapter has been useful to me when making big downloads or while using other networks, but it might not be your case.
Here's what I would advise, though it may be less than stellar:  Copy the files you need into folders and move them through a USB flash drive or using that external hard drive of yours. (Could the format be the reason your MBA can't see it?). Some stuff like calendars and contacts can be exported too. At least in Lion, I haven't used Tiger in a while.
    Good luck.

    Hey there rmflint,
It sounds like you are wanting to update the Apps that were synced over from your computer to your new iPhone 5s. If you are clicking Updates in the App Store in the bottom right corner, would you mind clarifying what happens when you are trying to update them?

  • Time Machine after migration to new Mac

So, I just got a new Mac, and used the option to copy settings and files from a Time Machine volume to the new machine. Now that everything's run, though, I can't use Time Machine to backup the new Mac -- it says "Volume not found". I've Googled a bit, but most of the troubleshooting seems to assume that the drive is missing or won't mount -- the drive is there, but the Time Machine software won't use it.
    What are my options here?

    Hi VK
    A supplementray question:
I have one i-mac happily backing up with Time Machine to an external hard drive.
I have just bought a second i-mac (stops the fighting!) and propose to use migration assistant to move my [admin] account from the old to the new i-mac leaving two other accounts on the old one. I see from your posts that it seems as if Time Machine will start a new back up series for the new i-mac's back ups. But what about the old i-mac? Will that continue to extend the existing Time Machine back up files, albeit without my transferred account and its files? If so, should I partition the external drive and start the new back ups from the new i-mac on this new partition. I'd like to end up with the old i-mac continuing to build its Time Machine back ups (less my account and its files) and have a new back up series from the new i-mac building to a separate partition on the external drive.
Does this make sense? I can't see an answer in the forum to what must be a reasonably common issue in this expandin mac world.

If you are referring to the fact that, in the App Store app, after you have installed or updated an App, that the Install button changes to now read "Open" then this does not mean that the App is Open and running. It means, rather, that, if you touch the button now marked "Open", the App will be started and "Open". It's just a quick way to get to the App you have just installed or updated.

Unable to open indesign after migration to new mac all other programs open and work. Why? Running Yosemite 10.10.1 Indesign CS5

The keyword is "migration." Migrating or copying files for Adobe applications usually does not work. Not all of the necessary subsidiary files are copied to the right location.
You'll need to first clean up the mess with this tool:
Use the CC Cleaner Tool to solve installation problems | CC, CS3-CS6

  • If I use the new sync-function, I keep losing my bookmarks or at least some of them during syncronisation. Is the new sync just as bad as the old one?

Just like with the old version of Firefox Sync I keep losing at least parts of my bookmarks when I'm using the new Sync version.
Anytime I change any of my bookmarks on one of my computers, I not only miss the change on other computers, but I also loose parts of the original bookmarks as well.
To me it seems that the new Sync is no better than the old one?

When you switched over to the new account, when you set it up the profile was blank and the name was: "uglings Firefox auf home1-ugling". Then on another login for the same computer, the name on the account was the same, so you changed the name.
So when you added bookmarks on the newly named computer account (the restricted account), all of the bookmark folders disappeared.
Summary for clarification, sorry for the repetitiveness.
    STR:
    # unlink account from old sync
    # create new windows account on same computer
    # on new account create sync account that has a blank profile and wait to sync. name is CILBMHVM6DT
    # go to the previous windows account and add the new sync account to the old profile. (i did get a warning that there was an older account that was signed into, but I hit sync anyway) name was WIN-CILBMHVM6DT
    # Wait for it to sync.
    # rename the computer name associated with sync on old profile because it has the same name.(renamed old one to WIN-2)
    # Add bookmarks to new windows account
    # Go back to old windows account and see the new folder, but some previous folders are missing and bookmarks are out of their original folder.
    Expected:
Merged folders to remain same file structure
    Results:
Some bookmarks are not in folders that no longer appear in the bookmarks toolbar folder.
2 accounts on the same computer connected to the same Firefox Sync account had the same name and deleted some bookmark folders.
I filed a bug on this:
However in the meantime we can only recreated the folders that are missing on the accounts that you have set up. If this happens again, I will ask if it has to do with the unique identifier of each device attached to an account (I am assuming that its just the name that we renamed) But please also continue the discussion for this in the bug.
    Thank you!

After migrating to new Mac iCal pop-up screen is mostly off screen and I can't seem to find a way to get it so that it pops up in the middle of the screen or anywhere else where I can see the whole thing.

This is a known bug which began to occur with the 10.4.8 update. I suggest you file a bug report with Apple. Its quite annoying and hopefully, the more people who contact Apple about it, the more importance they will give to fixing the problem.
