Migrating to new MB Air with a clean start?  Limited space...

I'm coming from a 15" MB Pro with a 320GB drive going to a 256GB MBA 13". Obviously a full migration is too large. I started out thinking that I would simply install all of the apps from scratch (purging in the process)...so I started this...reinstalling, getting my Dropbox, Evernote, etc. running. The cloud based apps like that are no problem - as is email. Where I'm struggling is on native apps (things like Bento, Concentrate, etc) whose data location isn't crystal clear to me. What folders do I need to bring over to get everything transferred? Is this something I should do through Migration Assistant, or just pull them on my NAS and copy them back over to the MBA?
Thanks

One problem with reinstalling your apps usually is, you miss a lot of the simple ones that you downloaded, or have lost the discs for.
Your best bet might have been to use +Setup Assistant+ when your new Mac first started up, but omit some things. You can still do that, if you wish, by starting over. See [Setting up a new Mac from an old one or its backups|http://web.me.com/pondini/AppleTips/Setup.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of the +Snow Leopard > Installation and Setup+ forum), especially the green box there. Let it transfer your apps and all user home folders, but de-select one or more large sub-folders, such as Pictures, Music, Movies, or wherever your big data folders are.
You can then delete some apps and data you don't want, and selectively copy other data that you do want.
Neither +Setup Assistant+ nor +Migration Assistant+ allow you to "pick and choose" individual apps, and they have the same limits on what you can omit. And they don't automatically move the data associated with your apps.

  • Migrating to new macbook air with Lion, entourage 2008 doesn't work

I  bought a new macbook air with lion installed. trying to migrate data from my old macbook with snow leopard. Got most data across, and installed my most frequently used applications:
    - office 2008: most office apps 2008 work, if buggily. entourage not, see below.
    - firefox (hangs up when downloading updates)
    - dropbox (ditto)
<these two problems may have something to do with internet proxy settings, will try to sort that out later>
    MAIN ISSUE:
entourage wont open at all.  so for now i'm using my old comp for e-mail and the new for the rest.
    MY OPTIONS:
please advise (1) what you think is the most time & nerve-saving option (2) how to do it smoothly:
    A) try to get office 2008 to work.
when trying to open entourage, it tells me this version (office 2008 12.0) cannot open this entourage database (12.3)
error for other apps says there is a problem with database, and rebuilding several times did not fix it.
would have to start with updating to the version i used last (office 2008 12.3). Problem is the ms office updater does not seem to work on lion. the first update does not open, says it does not support powermac.
    B) buying office 2011, and migrating entourage 2008 to outlook.
I suppose the best way to do this is to install office 2011 on the old mac first, then on the new one, then move database, right?
    C) migrating from entourage 2008 to lion mail.
best way to do this would be to import entourage email to leopard mail, then move those files to the new mac?  and move entourage addresses into the mac addressbook. my major concern is that i have a lot of mailing rules, and a fair bunch of notes. a lot. i;d rather not have to recreate those by hand. Is there a way to import rules from entourage to mail?
i also habe a huge backstock of mail, over 10,000, and a correspondigly huge addressbook (within entourage). i'm ready to abandon entourage at last (though i used it for a decade), but i want to have my addresses, my rules, and at least the last 3 yrs of emails. i get about 130 mails a day so i need plenty of automatic organizing capability.
i never had issues  my old mac/snow leopard, i just ran out of ram and the one usb broke, so i figured it's time. kinda sorry i did not just get the usb repaired and extra ram. what a hassle these migrations always are.
    cheers!

Yes, repairing first is a sound idea. In my experience I've only moved from Entourage to the OS X applications or from one version of Entourage to another. In the latter I've been able to just copy over the Microsoft User Data folder. But I have not used Entourage for quite some time.
Microsoft don't make it quite that easy to migrate to their own applications, but the import from a 'tidy' .rge file works well, I had a lot of issues with the first few I migrated but after performing a database repair prior to import all proceeded smoothly.

  • Migrated powerbook to new macbook air with mavericks and the macbook air is using much more storage

I migrated powerbook to new macbook air with mavericks and the macbook air is using much more storage than the powerbook.

I'm trying to figure out why the new macbook air takes almost twice as much storage as the old powerbook with the same content.

  • When I login to my bank, I get the message: 403 - Forbidden: Access is denied. You do not have permission to view this directory or page using the credentials that you supplied. Have new MacBook Air with Yosemite. How to solve this problem?

When I try to login to the website of my bank, I get the following error message:
403 - Forbidden: Access is denied.
You do not have permission to view this directory or page using the credentials that you supplied.
I have a new MacBook Air with OS Yosemite installed.
What is the problem and how can I solve it?

Some websites require a special client certficate for access. If you don't have that certficate, you'll have to contact the site operator to find out how to get one.
Sometimes the problem is caused by a web server that is configured to request an optional client certificate. Safari treats the request as mandatory. In that case, other browsers such as Firefox and Chrome may be able to connect to the site, because they ignore the request.
The first time you were prompted for a certificate, you may have clicked through a dialog that requested access to the Apple certificate in your keychain that is used to secure the iMessage service. In that case, you may be able to regain access to the site in Safari by doing as follows.
    Back up all data.
Double-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
    com.apple.idms.appleid.prd
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
Launch the Keychain Access application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Keychain Access in the icon grid.
Paste into the search field in the Keychain Access window by clicking in it and pressing the key combination command-V. An item may appear in the list of keychain items. The Name will begin with string you searched for, and the Kind will be "certificate."
Delete the item by selecting it and pressing the delete key. It will be recreated automatically the next time you launch the Messages or FaceTime application.
The next time you visit a site that prompts for an optional client certificate, cancel out of the prompt. You may have to do this several times before the server stops asking.

  • I have a new MacBook Air with Yosemite (no CD/DVD capacity). I want to install Photoshop Elements 6. Can I do this with the serial number? If pse 6 is not compatible, can I upgrade to pse 7. I do not need pse 12 or 13.

I cannot answer regarding compatibility, but there is no download available for PSE6 if you would need one for this.  You might be able to copy the installation files from a disk to some other removable media that the machine accepts.  Upgrading to PSE7 would not be possible mainly because Adobe does not sell older versions of their software.

  • HT204266 I have apps purchased on an old ipad can I use them on my new ipad air with a new apple ID

I purchased a new ipad air for my wife for chirstmas.
She owns a second generation ipad
If I setup the new ipad air with a different apple ID can the old apps be installed on the new IPAD without repurchasing the apps?
sounds confusing but my real question is
If I set up the ipad using the original user and reinstall the apps can I change apple id's and still use the installed apps?

All apps are tied to the Apple ID they are purchased with and is not transferable.

  • Migration to new Macbook Air incomplete, disc ejected

    Hi,
I am trying to migrate data from an external USB disk with time machine backup of my mid-2007 Macbook to a new Macbook Air 13". I have't found a problem like this in the forums.
The data is ca. 46GB, it shows it should take 24 mins but at 30% all of a sudden it speeds up to a 100%, says the migration was successful but an error window shows up at the same time saying that the disc was not ejected properly etc. And indeed some data was transferred (user preferences, documents) but some (music especially) was not. I have tried this both on a fresh installation at the startup and after having created an additional user account to be able to overwrite (same user name) the one I had already tried to migrate.
The external disc is PQI with two USB ends - I can only plug one in as the other USB port on MBA is on the other side and the other end of the cable won't reach there. I don't think this could be the problem, could it?
At first it seemed to me like the disc was ejected because the data was unreadable or unaccessible(?) on it. So I did a full fresh backup and it still would get ejected and the migration would be incomplete.
I really don't know what I should do. Whether to try and run the migration procedure over and over again, but this seems terribly silly and I don't know if this will duplicate files that have already been transferred or not.
I would greatly appreciate your help in finding the problem here.
    Thanks!

    A couple of suggestions...
    1) An external disk with two usb cords generally uses one of the cords for extra power...
you could try pluging the extra end into a powered usb hub.
    2) You could try to sync directly from the existing machine if it is on the same network.
    This is what I did.

  • New Macbook Air with bad battery life

I've got a new Macbook Air (2013, 11-inch) and I upgraded the RAM and the processor. I'm only getting 6 hours max from the battery, which is disappointing because I wanted to be able to do a day's work without a charger. I've already sent one back and had it replaced, but the new one has the same problem. I've done a call with Apple Support, where they directed me to the help article I'd already read. I've checked Activity Monitor and killed everything I can. I've turned off Bluetooth as well. I use Chrome a lot, Tweetdeck is running, but neither of these things I'd expect to result in a 6 hour battery at 100%.
Does this sound like normal performance? If it's the processor speed, I'd be tempted to return this one and downgrade the processor as battery life is more important to me than speed (my work is mostly online anyway).

Quit Chrome and try Safari for a while. See whether there's an improvement.

  • Got the new MAcBook Air with Lion, and would like to sell the previous model. How do I delete everything?

    Hi guys.
I got the all new MacBook Air 11" with Lion yesterday, and would like to sell the previous model (it was with SnowLeopard).
What do I have to do to delete everything, including my account? Do I need the SuperDrive or is it possibile without one?
    Thanks!

Erase and Install OSX Snow Leopard http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3910
And yes, you need the SuperDrive for this.

  • Want to sync new MacBook Air with iMac.

Just got a new MacBook Air, and would like to sync (iCal, Contacts) with existing iMac OS 10.6.8, without using iCloud - at least until all the bugs are worked out of iCloud.  Any suggestions or words of caution?

None that I'm aware of. I don't know precisely how to sync everything without iCloud but you can copy your data so it is on both machines. Just open adress book, go to File, Export and select Adress Book Archive, save the file then copy and open it on your Macbook Air. For iCal it's practically the same proceedure.
    Hope it helps!

  • Issues syncing new iPad air with iTunes

    Hi everyone-
I work at an Apple Reseller and I am trying to trouble shoot an issue for one of my customers. He brought in an iPad 3 with information on it that he backed up to iTunes and wants to put it on his new iPad air. The issue is that the PC would not recognize the new iPad Air, but will recognize the older device. He is running Windows 7 on a PC and is using the newest version of iTunes. Does anyone know if there are any special drivers he needs to have? Or why iTunes won't recognize the new iPad air? Has anyone else had this issue? Please respond. Thank you!!
