Migration assisstant mishap?
i recently transferred files from my ibook g4, to my new macbook pro. now i have noticed the following problems
1. spotlight is not working properly: i cannot locate music files located in itunes, however spotlight will find other files. i can locate the files myself using the finder, but spotlight isnt working.
2. iphoto files are missing and are unable to display using the finder. by this i mean: me using the finder to quicksearch pics using the arrow keys when trying to send pics. the pictures are there, but are not being displayed. this is a big deal, as the arrow keys allow for quick searching hundredes of pics.
both of these issuea are high priorities for me to change, any advice is greatly needed.
Hmmm, are you trying to Migrate from Mavericks' Time Capsule down to 10.5.8? That won't work.
You cannot transfer "backwards" from a newer "major" version of OSX to an earlier one (such as Mountain Lion 10.8.x to Lion 10.7.x). However, you can transfer "backwards" from a newer "minor" version to an earlier one (such as 10.8.2 to 10.8.1), but before using any Apple apps, you should upgrade to at least the same version as the original, as the older versions of the apps may not work properly with newer versions of data.

Cant find anything that Migration Assisstant moved
I ran migration assisstant and it said it was successful (after 2 1/2 hours) but nothing from my old computer is on the new one.
Welcome to Apple Support Communities
Migration Assistant creates a new account with the migrated files. To access to them, go to > Log Out, and log in the new user. You will be able to access to all your transferred files.
If you wanted to have only one account, you should have done it after reinstalling OS X because it lets you to migrate your backup without having another user, so you will have only one user. If you haven't got anything you want in your old account, you can delete it in System Preferences > Users and Groups -
Target Disk vs Migration Assisstant
This may have already been covered so excuse me if I missed the post.
When I bought my last Mac I used the target disk mode to copy/clone my old Mac to the new one. It's so long ago I can't remember if I copied everything including the OS.
I'm sure I need to copy the all the files as some of the apps won't work otherwise.
Or would it be better to use the Migration Assistant?
If so does this copy the whole lot including the OS.
Both machines are currently running 10.4.11 but I will be upgrading them to Leopard after the transfer. I will be keeping the old Mac so I also do not want to delete any files. Neither are Intel.
Many thanks. ;0)Hi badga, and a warm welcome to the forums!
Migration Assistant won't import the OS, but should copy all the files needed for any APPs to run.
If you don't have any files on the one you're transferring to that need saving, then a clone would work fine. -
I recently invested $2000 (one week ago) in a Macbook Pro Retina 2014 2.8ghz 512gb. Dont get me wrong, I am in love with my product and am extremely satisfied but I have honestly encountered nothing but issues.
My first issue was the transferring of data from my 2010 white macbook 500gb. Both laptops have Yosemite installed and are 100% up to date but I have spent the last week getting them to talk to each other. I am not new to the workings of Apple but I have never endeavoured to use applications such as airdrop, migration assisstant or even bluetooth.
My first attempt was to transfer 200gb of files (Photos mainly, I'm a photographer) to my other laptop via a 64gb USB in segments. But after an hour and only 10gb getting copied across, I decided other alternatives may be of more help.
That is when I came to my first dilemma: AIRDROP. Airdrop is crazy. Yes I did click the option on my retina to search for older macs and yes they did connect. I can send files from my MBR to my white macbook 2010 immediately but my old macbook will not send files to my retina. Yes all of the necessary sharing settings are in place - both MacBooks have the same settings selected so I cannot figure out what to do. Information on this subject would also be helpful yet it is not the end of my troubles.
Second Issue: Migration Assistant.
So yesterday I discovered this little 'gem'. I am a very impatient person so you can imagine i did not appreciate 20 hours of file transfers (via wifi as i do not have a thunderbolt to ethernet adaptor for MBR). Anyway that's all well and good if it actually worked. But of course it did not. I followed apples instructions and I was down to my final 4 hours this morning when my MBR told me the connection was lost and to reconnect. It was making the loudest whirring noise like air coming from inside the hard drive or something. I freaked out. My $2000 machine should not be doing this. It was only a little bit warm; not hot but it was incredibly loud, I'm not sure how to describe it. Keep in mind this computer is brand new so please tell me: WHAT WAS THE SOUND?!?!?!?! AND WHY? what was wrong? what could I have possibly done wrong? My wifi WAS working because my desktop PC was connected. So i waited and waited. Of course I couldn't actually do anything without quitting airdrop and in the end that's just what I had to do. A lot of time wasted for such an unsuccessful cause.
That brings me to my final issue:
So after migration had.... "completed" or crashed or whatever you want to call it, I at least assumed some of the files had maybe copied over and i could just resume from where I left off last time somehow. Oh how stupid that assumption was. My user account did in fact copy over but not a single file copied. And yes, I did log into that user account to check. ANYWAY, I went onto "about this mac" to see my storage info (still being optimistic about my wasted 20 hours). SURPRISE SURPRISE: Yet another problem. I now have 100gb in "other". This macbook is brand new. I should not have any GB in other. I am so incredibly annoyed. HOW DO I DELETE OTHER?! (preferably without downloading software) and is there anything else of importance in other that i should be careful not to delete that is contained within other?
I am only 15 years old and this was a massive investment for me so I treat my Macbook like a baby. And no, I'm not spoilt by my parents. I had to work at Subway for a year to earn $2000 - without spending a single cent (My wage is only $9.00AUD an hour so i essentially worked some 222 hours for this macbook). And I'm not crazy, I needed it for school.
Anyway I'm not impressed with apple. I have Applecare but they aren't open on the weekends or whenever I try to call so that hasn't exactly been helpful. PLEASE HELP ME.Make a note of all your settings for Wi-Fi in the Network preference pane, then delete the connection from the connection list.
Launch the Keychain Access application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Keychain Access in the page that opens.
In the keychain list, an item named "System" should be listed. If it isn't, select File ▹ Add Keychain from the menu bar and add the following:
/Library/Keychains/System.keychain
Now search in Keychain Access for the name of the wireless network (not the name of the router.) Double-click one of the items and check the box labeled Show password in the inspector window. You'll be prompted for your keychain password to confirm. Make a note of the network password. Then delete every "AirPort Network Password" in the search results. Quit Keychain Access.
Go back to the Network preference pane and recreate the Wi-Fi connection with the same settings as before. You do this by clicking the plus-sign icon below the connection list, and selecting Wi-Fi as the interface in the sheet that opens. Select Join other network from the Network Name menu, then select your network. Enter the password when prompted and save it in the keychain. -
Why is migration assistant crashing?
I've recently upgraded to Mavericks. I had issues with the installation and it was necessary to do a clean install. I can't get my backup to import through migration assisstant because it is crashing seconds after I open it. Anyone have suggestions on how I diagnois the problem with Migration Assistant?
Sorry. I had used the string "Crash" when search earlier and it limited the scope of the report in the window.

OS / APPS / Data Migration Plan ??
My current setup is a G5 Quad with 150 GB Raptor (OS & APPS) and 750 GB Seagate (DATA) drives. I will be purchasing a Mac Pro 2.66 this week and want to use my current drives - so I'll simply swap them into the new Mac Pro - easy. However, this involves a move from PowerPC cpu to Intel - so should I load the OS onto my Raptor via the archive and install method or do a complete reinstall of th OS and reload the apps from their original disks? The migration assisstant has had mixed reviews.
My main apps are CS3, Aperature, some video files and a number of BIG Keynote and Powerpoint presentations.
ThanksYou have to reformat the Raptor, Partition in DU "Options..." from "APL" to "GUID."
Do NOT migrate PPC applications. Reinstall is the only safe way. Data and prefs are safe and fine. Mixed reviews? It is horrible if used to import PPC applications. You will have molasses on your hands.
I'd reformat the Seagate as well.
With four drive bays that should be rather easy, and with some backup drives so you can clone the Raptor to preserve your files as is before reformatting, then clone the OEM drive to Raptor before updating, hence, leaving the OEM as backup system drive as well. -
Hey everyone,
I wondered if anyone could help me on this before a trip to the Apple Store...
So, my internal HD the other day was completely full and running applications were really slow to load. I'm running OS X Snow Leopard 10.8.5 and I think the HD is 157.8 GB. It's a mid 2009 model. I finally took the decision to format it and start a fresh. I backed everything up with 'Time Machine' but using my own USB Seagate 1TB external HD.
I've read a few things on these forums about Migration Assisst and followed the process to put my backup onto the Mac but it just 'spins round like a grey circle' and doesn't find my external HD. Does anyone know how long it's meant to take to find the HD? Should it find it straight away or take time because there's so much on the external HD?
I've put the HD through a 'repair process' to see if any backup was corrupted or damaged but it came back, 'Okay'. The Mac does recognise it because on my desktop home page the external drive comes up with the picture and says, 'time machine' and I can access all the backups it's done and all my music, movies, books, apps and pictures.
I do think I've messed up maybe but hopefully someone could show me the way
Kind Regards

Safari doesn't work after new Installation of Lion
Hello,
I installed a new SSD into my MBP mid 2009 and put the HDD into the optibay instead of the Superdrive, after that I installed OSX Lion onto the SSD and used the Migration Assisstent to migrate my old User Folder from the HDD with the newly installed OSX Lion. After the migration, everything went well, except of the following:
-Safari doesn't work, no website can be loaded, as soon as I run Safari, there is a process running named "Webprocess" which uses 95% of the CPU and makes the MBP heating.
-VLC Media Player does not work as well
Any idea anyone?
thx
MohammadAnother problem is:
When I start the Dropbox Application, it uses nearly 90% of the CPU as well, so the mac heats up, in a way that it is not possible to use the dropbox application...
(The Icon of the VLC Media Player only jumps up and down in the dock, and nothing else happens) -
How to move my library...
Exactly what folder do I need to copy to replicate my existing iTunes music onto my new iMac? No migration assisstant nor Cloud - going to copy onto an external hdd that will be connected to the new iMac via usb3.0 dock.
Also, what do I need to do to link / point iTunes to the external drive?
Thanks...Well - I helped myself :-)
Fortunately, I had a Mac that was pristine so far as iTunes is concerned and was able to view the folder structure - replicated that structure and all works well now.
FWIW, I had nested the folders incorrectly and the app could not find the proper folder - but could play it once I manually navigated through the mess iI created.
Peace to all. -
Can i move songs from my iPod to my new matchbook air?
I bought a brand new mackbook air and i had trouble on the migration assisstant because the verification window wouldnt show up on my old dell. I would now like to know if i am able to move songs from my ipod to my new mac without having to use migration assisstant. Please help me! Thanks!
one way to can simply do this (if dragging and dropping won't work), is to simply put the songs that you would like in the playlist into the On-The-Go playlist in your iPod. Once you have put these songs into the On-The-Go folder (by highlighting the song and holding down the center button), simply plug the ipod back into your computer, and rename the folder with the songs in it. Hope this helps.

IPhoto is not recognizing all the photos on an external drive
I used Migration Assistant to transfer accounts and data (with the exception of photos and music from one user) from a 320 gb hard drive (from a broken PPC iMac running Tiger 10.4.11) to a 160 gb Intel iMac running Snow Leopard 10.6.8. When I opened iPhoto 6.0.6, it prompted me to locate an iPhoto library, so I pointed to the iPhoto Library folder on the old hard drive (Users/Name/Pictures/iPhoto Library).
Everything seems fine except that about half the newest images from 2011 and all the images from 2012 are missing. The folders appear on the left side, but they are simply missing the rolls and images. The images do appear, however, in the Originals and Data folders on the old hard drive in the corresponding 2011 and 2012 folders. I can view the images if I double click them.
I tried manually dragging one of the "missing" rolls from the Originals folder on the old hard drive to the iPhoto application, but it did not work. I got the green "+" sign, and it attempted to import the folder as usual, but then a message popped up that read, "Unreadable Files: 1 The following file could not be imported. (The file is in the iPhoto Library folder.)."
Please advise.
Thank you in advance.
-DonI'm no sure I understand this:
I used Migration Assistant to transfer accounts and data (with the exception of photos and music from one user) from a 320 gb hard drive (from a broken PPC iMac running Tiger 10.4.11) to a 160 gb Intel iMac running Snow Leopard 10.6.8.
So you moved the accounts and data from the old machine to a newer one.
So, why then did you point iPhoto at the old machine?
so I pointed to the iPhoto Library folder on the old hard drive (Users/Name/Pictures/iPhoto Library).
Or do I misunderstand you?
This is a symptom of a corrupted Library:
The folders appear on the left side, but they are simply missing the rolls and images. The images do appear, however, in the Originals and Data folders on the old hard drive in the corresponding 2011 and 2012 folders. I can view the images if I double click them.
Assuming you a: copied the Library to a new location and b: it worked fine in the previous lication, then I would guess the copy went wrong. Re-do it, manually, don't use Migration Assisstant.
If you didn't move the Library then
Try these in order - from best option on down...
1. Do you have an up-to-date back up? If so, try copy the library6.iphoto file from the back up to the iPhoto Library allowing it to overwrite the damaged file.
2. Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In Library Manager it's the FIle -> Rebuild command)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.
3. If neither of these work then you'll need to create and populate a new library.
To create and populate a new *iPhoto 6* library:
Note this will give you a working library with the same Rolls and pictures as before, however, you will lose your albums, keywords, modified versions, books, calendars etc.
Move the iPhoto Library to the desktop
Launch iPhoto. It will ask if you wish to create a new Library. Say Yes.
Go into the iPhoto Library on your desktop and find the Originals folder. From the Originals folder drag the individual Roll Folders to the iPhoto Window and it will recreate them in the new library.
When you're sure all is well you can delete the iPhoto Library on your desktop.
In the future, in addition to your usual back up routine, you might like to make a copy of the library6.iPhoto file whenever you have made changes to the library as protection against database corruption. -
Machine hangs every 30 minutes like clockwork
Within the last couple of weeks, my system has started to hang like clockwork every 30 min. No idea what caused it and don't remember anything in particular installed or done during that period. Unfortunately, when it hangs - there is nothing kicked out in Console and there is no recurring "this process was running right before it happened" clue.
Details on system:
Macbook Aluminum (late 2008)
Mac OS X Lion 10.7.4
2 MB ram
30% harddrive space free (approx. 90 GB)
What I've tried:
-repaired permissions
-repaired drive
-cleaned up drive via Cocktail, CCleaner, CleanMyMac and Disk Doctor
-reset PRAM
-reset SMC (which, thankfully, solved an out of control fan problem)
-tried booting in Safe Mode (and it didn't seem to occur)
-reinstalled Mac OS X Lion
The hang is most obvious when watching a tv show or video - but this may simply be because video and audio suddenly stopping is much more evident then at other times. I believe it has also happened while I'm just working pages.
Any thoughts on how to tackle this next? The fact that it didn't occure in Safe Mode makes me think that it's a login/startup item issue, but I'm unsure of how to tackle this without breaking something. Is there any way to see what's going on at a "deeper" level then Console?
Thanks for any help or direction you can offer. I've spent the last 4 days tackling this and while the computer is running smoother, the "I can set my watch to it" hang ever 30 minutes is annoying.
Thanks!
DanielSo, I have no idea what it was. In the end, I decided to just go for a clean install. I had a time machine backup and then a seperate backup (I'm in the middle of my PhD research, so I was nervous about loosing anything). But, wiping and reinstalling was easy. Here's the process I went though, in case anyone else is interested:
1. I made a bootable DVD of Mac OS X Lion last year when I upgraded (you can find directions for making a USB or bootable DVD online). This isn't necessary if you have a fast internet connection - as the Lion Recovery tool (CMD+R at boot) will redownload Lion from the App Store for you. I'm currently in Africa and due to the speed of our internet, that wasn't an option.
2. I restarted the computer, holding down CMD+R to boot into Lion Recovery.
3. Then used Disk Utility to erase the drive.
4. Then I inserted the bootable DVD and restarted the machine, holding down "C" on boot this time to force a bott from the DVD.
5. Went through the process of reinstalling (warning, it took a LONG time for it the install utility to come up from the DVD, you just have to be patient).
6. I reinstalled from the DVD which was a quick and painless process - 30-45min. Set your initial user as Admin, as you'll transfer the Time Machine material to a new user. (Also, having an admin account keeps one account "uncorrupted" should an app install mess with your normal user account).
7. After install, I ran all the system updates I could (included a 1.5 GB update for Lion 1.7.4).
8. After all the updates were run, I then plugged in the Time Machine and ran "Migration Assisstant" from the Utlity folder. The restore from Time Machine was slick. It completely brought the user back with our wallpaper, dock settings, apps, etc.
That's it. Everything seems to be working much better - smoother, quicker - then before. It's actually incredible what an increase in speed just doing a clean install (I had originally upgraded to Lion from Snow Leopard) has made. It's like a brand new computer.
I hope this might be helpful for others. -
Mavericks tidy-up (/Library/Receipts)
Looking at Activity Monitor I've noticed a few background processes related to applications and hardware that I am no longer using running in the background.
Whilst cleaning these up I've also found quite a large amount of data in the /Library/Receipts folder - most of which dates back to 2009 or earlier - there seems to be little need to keep these hanging around.
I'm guessing that these are holdbacks from installing one OS on top of the previous, or from using Migration Assisstant to move from old to new machines.
Is there a simple way to clean-up my install?
For instance if I back-up, do a clean install and then Migrate Users will I keep the out dated files?
Otherwise is there a list of folders that are no longer used by Mac OS X?I don't know of any simple way to do this aside from educated guesses & trial & error, thus the suggestion to keep a cloned backup (updated as needed) in case you do delete something you should not have.
Not quite the same thing but similar is making sure you have a functional clone or an intact Time Machine backup, & then doing a clean install by booting into the Recovery HD partition, erasing the startup disk using the Recovery HD partition's copy of Disk Utility, & then installing the OS via Internet download.
When that completes, you can use Setup/Migration Assistant to transfer just your user data (& maybe system settings) from the clone or Time Machine backup, but you will still have to install all the third party apps you still use all over again.
Obviously, this is a very time consuming process no matter which approach you take. Because of that, I long ago gave up on that & only delete large files & packages when I am absolutely certain I no longer need their contents (& even then I still have backups stored as compressed disk image files for startup volumes going back to when Tiger was new just in case there is something I need from them some day). -
Moving from One Mac to Another
I'm considering selling my 13" Mid-2009 MacBook Pro for a newer 13" i5 MacBook Pro. It's the first time I've done a transition from one Mac to another and I have a few questions...
What's the best way to transfer everything over to my new Mac, without having to reinstall certain software? I'm worried about needing to re-install Logic, Aperture, Final Cut, or CS5, because these discs are packed away in boxes and I can't really get to them right now. If I have to re-install things like Firefox or OnyX, no big deal there... just looking to backup the Pro applications.
Can migration assisstant do what I'm looking for, or is there something better for this? Need some insight on how to handle this.
Thanks for reading!THIS ONE I KNOW!!!
There's a Migrating your Mac wizard in the "Utilities" folder - when you start the NEW Mac - all you need is a network cable, when PROMPTED - when the new Mac turns on - it asks "are you migrating an existing Mac" (something like that) say YES - at that point, on your other system - you're going to fire up the "migrating your mac" program - which will be on your OLD system. Once there, the Network cable (Make sure it's compatible with gigbit speeds - this process will take some time!) but the two systems WITHOUT A SWITCH, Without a hub - plugged from one to another, will move EVERYTHING to the new system.
How?
You sign on as YOU every time you do anything. The program simply looks for anything NOT owned by the system - and 100% of your stuff is moved over properly, into the right places -
Old G5 won't start in target disk mode.
I'm trying to migrate from my old G5 (2003) to a 'new' (second-hand) G5. When I run Migration Assisstant on the new one and it asks me to start the old machine in target disk mode the old machine won't boot up. I have wireless keyboard and have tried pressing 't' on start up to no avail so I have also tried rebooting via the 'Start Up' pane of System Preferences. When I do this it boots up to the blue screen with yellow firewire logo then after less than a second it powers down.
There are no other firewire devices plugged in and as far as I can tell all the firmware etc is up to date (Software Update runs every week)
Grateful for anyone who has any ideas.
Matt.Hi Matt-
No chime is significant.....
It would be best to reset the PRAM on the old G5. This is best done with a wired keyboard, though you can try it with the wireless (may not work). Hold the CommandOption+PR keys and startup. Hold the keys until you hear the second startup chime, then release. The machine should then continue on to boot normally.
After the PRAM reset, the Startup chime should be restored, and, hopefully, so will Firewire Target Disk mode.
