Migration Assistant 10.5 to target running 10.6

Hi everyone,
I've been scouring the internet for information as to what exactly the problem is to an issue. I've tried downloading updated to MA, but nothing yet.
I've got 1 Mac with (likely) a broken screen power inverter running 106. So it is mostly dim all of the time. I have another Mac with a smaller drive running 10.5, with less RAM. Each Mac is only really used by one different user each. My plan has been to migrate the user on smaller HD to the larger, and switch out the necessary RAM and drive.
My problem is that when using Migration Assistant, I follow all of the instructions, and both computers get stuck on "Looking for Other Computers". They are definite;y connected on a network, as I am currently using screen sharing to access the assistant on the Mac with the dim screen.
I've tried:
Downloading the Migration Assistant update for Leopard (for using it with Lion)
Disabling Firewall (or allowing all incoming connections)
Sharing the Internet via Ethernet
Nothing yet has worked. Is there something categorically wrong with migrating a user from a Leopard Mac to Snow Leopard? I can't see anything wrong as far as only migrating a user.
Any suggestions, or workarounds?

Hello,
Is the newer one set "From Another Mac", & the older one "To another Mac"?
Is it Wifi or Ethernet? Wifi will need the Passcode entered...
For possible clarity, MA can't migrate "from" an older OSX "to" a newer OSX, only the other way. 10.6 using FROM, 10.5 using TO.

  • Migration assistant can't find target disk

I've just bought a Macbook Pro (Leopard), and am trying to use the migration assitant to move everything from my old Macbook (OS 10.4.11), the way I once did when I upgraded from my old iBook (OSX) to my Macbook. Everything seems fine - I plug in the Firewire 400 to Firewire 400 I used the last time, and start up the Macbook in target mode, getting the Firewire symbol and all. However, the migration assitant on my MBP won't find my MB target disk. At first it says "Waiting for disks to appear", then nothing happens, until I get an error message saying the target computer has no OSX...
I've repaired permissions as well as the disk on the MB with the OSX installation disk, but to no avail. To be fair, the MB startup disk could not be completely repaired, which I'm thinking might be the problem. (However, the MB does work fine otherwise.) I've searhed this forum and googled for it, but haven't found much help anywhere. Any chance anybody here knows why it won't work?

AFAIK, the setup assistant only needs to see a good OS on the computer you're transferring from. The setup assistant uses the migration assistant to do the transfer if you select a user account from the drop-down menu. I used E&I and transferred/migrated from 10.4.11. If transferring from a PPC to an ICBM (Intel-chip-based Mac) peruse http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=1872713 before doing it.

  • Does Migration Assistant require and up and running Windows machine?

Our home Windows desktop just died.  The contents of the hard drive are still intact.  We are getting an iMac to replace it.  Can the Migration Assistant work with just the hard drive (connected via usb in an enclosure) or does it require a Windows machine running?  If I need a running machine, is there any work around or, failing that, does anyone know any good programs to help migrate files? I could just copy manually, but that might take a while.
    Thanks!

No, you must install Windows Migration Assistant on the PC and connect it to your network (or Mac).
If I need a running machine, is there any work around
    Yup.
See the Manually Migrating section towards the bottom of Switch 101: Migrate your Windows files or system to your Mac.

  • Changed computers and can't use migration assistant - erk!!

I just got a new Macbook - both Word and Appleworks are on my ibook and I don't have the original discs to hand - is there a way to migrate them onto my macbook? Problem is my ibook doesn't have Migration Assistant on it as it runs on 10.3.9 - I don't really want to have to buy both iworks and Mac Office again when I have already bought earlier versions of both I'm familiar with and like. Any ideas?

    Hello
It's really simple. Read the License delivered with every application. It claims that you must have one legal copy of every Apple's application for each machine on which you want to use it.
For µSoft products, I don't know the rule.
If you keep the two machines, you must buy new copies of Apple's programs.
If you sell the old one, you must sell the bundled apps with it so, AppleWorks will leave you and you will have to buy a new copy.
If you destroy the old machine, you may keep the programs which where bundled with it.
To transfer AppleWorks to the Mackbook, link the two machines with a Firewire cable and use the ibook in target mode so you will be able to copy the AppleWorks folder from the ibook to the Macbook.
Don't forget to delete it from the ibook.
Doing that, copy also the fonts delivered with AppleWorks.
A safer track would be to use the ibook to burn a CD with the AppleWorks folder and the AppleWorks fonts so they would be available in case of you will be forced to re-install things on the Macbook.

  • Is Lion migration assistant working?

    Hello,
I'm new to Apple products and have just purchase my first Macbook air!  I'm attempting to migrate the files from my Windows PC with the migration assistant.  It has been running close to 10 hours without any indicators.  I would hate to stop the program if it is nearly complete.
So my question really is, "How do I know the migration assistant is working?".
    Thank you,
    TDL

    Hi Larry,
I think a later version of MA is only needed if you use the slow.akward process of both Computers running different versions of OAX & via Networking.
A far better way is if both have Firewire, then Boot the Tiger Mac into FW Target Mode…
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=58583
That way MA only needs to run on the newer Mac.

  • Failure:  Setup/Migration Assistant Cannot Find Volume

I first posted this problem in an e-list. The only replies were manual work-arounds.
I want to move files, applications, user accounts, and settings from my desktop machine to an iBook. I know how to move most of these things the old, manual way by dragging, but it would be neat to use the Assistant.
On my iBook G4/1.33GHz which came with OS X 10.4.2, I reinstalled the OS (Erase and Install). The initial Setup Assistant did not see the "Main Drive" on my QuickSilver G4/733MHz running the retail version of Panther updated to 10.3.9. "Main Drive" is the only volume on an add-on internal Seagate hard drive, and it is the one I want to use for transferring files to the iBook. Setup Assistant saw all three volumes on the original IBM hard drive.
Migration Assistant is no better. I noticed in repeated attempts, that the three IBM volumes show up in the iBook's Finder, but Migration Assistant offers only one of them for selection to use, and not always the same volume each time. Would that be normal?
The iBook's Disk Utility does not see "Main Drive," but it sees the IBM volumes. On the QuickSilver, the Disk Utility in one of the IBM's volumes sees "Main Drive."
With searches using "Setup Assistant" and "Migration Assistant," I can find nothing relevant in scanning over 200 of Apple's support pages. I went through Apple's "Mac OS X 10.3, 10.4: Transferring data with Setup Assistant / Migration Assistant FAQ" at:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=25773. The QS is not a server, for the purposes of volume naming conventions at:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107316
FIRST: How can I get Migration Assistant to see "Main Drive"?
OK, if there is no easy way to make "Main Drive" reveal itself, I can move files from Home>Documents and I can pick and choose from Applications and Applications Support.
For e-mail, would I move the entire folder at Home>Library>Mail?
What else would I need to move for user accounts and network settings?
    iBook G4, QuickSilver G4, PB G3 Lombard   Mac OS X (10.4.2)   QuickSilver has 10.3.9, Lombard has 9.2.1

I assume that "Main Drive" has a bootable OS on it.
If not, then the Migration Assistant won't see it.
Also, how is the "Main Drive" hooked up? IIRC, it's
through a 3rd party card, it may not work. Does it
show up on the desktop when you mount the QS to the
    iBook in target disk mode?
"Main Drive" is bootable in 10.3.9. It is on the same ATA-4 bus as the IBM drive. But it does not show up on the iBook desktop in TDM.
If it has a bootable OS installed and shows up on the
iBook when hooked up in target disk mode, the first
thing to do is boot the QS with the Panther install
disk, launch Disk Utility, and repair permissions and
repair the "Main Drive." If that passes the repair
cycle, then hook it up to the iBook in TDM, and try
    the Migration Assistant again.
Having just run Disk Utility Repair Disk Permissions from "Main Drive" after installing the Security Update 2006-004 on it, I tried TDM again from the iBook. There was no change.
I always run Repair Disk Permissions from the Disk Utility on the booted hard drive as advised elsewhere so that it is aware of all the Apple updates and third party applications.
Should I still run Repair Disk Permissions from the Panther Install CD? This is safe to do?
    Thanks.

  • Can't get migration assistant to move files

Trying to move from an old laptop - Dell Inspiron I6000 running Windows XP version 2002 to a new iMac.  Have downloaded Migration Assistant on the laptop and run it, but when I get to the 3rd screen it says "an error occurred while preparing your information for transfer" and forces me to quit Migration Assistant.  Any ideas?  Any alternate ways of moving the information from this laptop to the iMac?

Did you figure this out?  I'm having the same problem

  • Migration assistant built mac makes me validate apps with password, fix?

I built an Imac using Migration Assistant. Now when I run an app it prompts me to put in the password for the account I purchased the app. The error says that this app was purchased with a different account. Then I put in the password and the app works fine.
I guess I could build the computer from scratch, (yes, I know, I should of had a good backup).
The real reason I did it was that my laptop was not "upgraded" to Lion. So I wanted my Imac rebuilt the same way.
Any suggestions for fixing this problem?
    Thanks!

Anyone have a suggestion? I can call Apple I guess.

  • Migration Assistant-can't find files

I have used migration assistant. When it was running I was able to see another user account with all the files. The next day, I cannot find any files, and there is no other user account than the main one I have. I know the files are somewhere, because the info on my hardrive says 31 gigs are occupied. It is a brand new computer so I assume that is 31 gigs from my migrated files. I have repaired permissions and still, no other user account and no view of the files. Thanks.

    1. When I looked in the User folder on my new harddrive the old user name appeared with I think noindex attached to the user name. There were files that I could actually copy into another user folder.
    2. There were more than 1 user on the Older Mac, but I was only migrating one user.
    C. I checked only to migrate files and folders and network settings. No applications.
I manually did create a main user account when I first booted up the new computer. I also loaded some software that I needed for immediate work. It was a bit later that I migrated. I first started a migration that I then realized was going to take some thirty hours, so I aborted it. When I started migration assistant the second time, it asked if I wanted to resume the interrupted migration. I said no so that it would begin again. The first time I did include applications, and I then decided only to migrate files. So I started what I thought was a clean migrate. There was a messsage at the end that said network settings and some other system info could not be transfered. It said migration was complete.

  • Migration Assistant fails with MacPro6,1

I bought a Mac Pro a few months ago and kept getting kernal panic's after running migration assistant from a MacPro1,1 which I have had for about 8 years.  I went back and forth with Apple, and they decided it was defective and sent me a new one which took a while to get through the university bureaucracy. I ran Migration Assistant from a MacPro1,1 running OS 10.7.5, and again got a kernal panic on restarting but was able to do a safe-boot successfully ((previous MacPro even this failed).  I updated the OS X software and tried to turn off stuff that might be interfering but still get kernal panic's on restarting sometimes. Also received alerts that a variety of system extensions "were not installed properly". Clearly, the system IS NOT that stable so I erased the hard disk and will do a manual restore app by app so no preferences or systems-related software gets transferred.
This problem is very surprising to me since I have never had problems with Migration Assistant before and we have plenty of macs here. I must have tried a dozen times with the first Mac Pro using either the old mac in firewire mode or using the time-machine backup but nothing worked. I wonder if anyone else has seen this and if the new Mac Pro has an issue in this regard.
On the positive side, Migration Assistant probably moved a bunch of obsolete software/files from the 8-yr old Mac which was migrated from an older Mac (and the older Mac was migrated from a an even earlier Mac).  A clean install at this point may be worth doing but a hassle.

Your conclusion that Migration assistant fails is not supported by the evidence you presented. You said you got kernel panics AFTER you restarted -- these are not caused by inherent Vice in Migration Assistant, which appears to have completed successfully.
Kernel panic is not ONE problem, it is one of hundreds to thousands of problems, and if you would like help debugging that, you could post a kernel panic log for readers to help you interpret.
Mac OS X: How to log a kernel panic
If you approach Apple for help with this issue, they will check for machine-check reports, run diagnostics, then send you home to erase your drive and re-Install Mac OS X from scratch (which effectively removes third party add-ons in the process).

  • Migration Assistant forgets things

Yesterday I re-installed Lion on a newly-erased hard drive, and during the installation process chose to move data from another disk (I have a fully-bootable external USB backup). After that was all done, I logged in and found that my desktop image and dock were reset to the defaults. More exploration revealed other losses:
ALL of my System Preferences were reset to their defaults, as were preferences for all Apple apps (iCal, Safari, etc.).
Mail.app was completely wiped -- no accounts, let alone downloaded messages and "On My Mac" mailboxes.
A number of my 3rd-party apps were totally reset as well. The Microsoft Office suite forgot all my preferences (first of which was "Don't open the Project Gallery at startup"). AppZapper and Papers2 forgot that I had registered them, and my Papers2 library was completely gone (dear God). I haven't opened every single app, so it's possible (probable) that these are not the only apps to have been affected.
I actually tried the installation-migration process twice. The first time, I deselected some folders (although none that seem to have anything to do with any of this, just Desktop and Downloads I think), so when I tried again I selected everything. I got the exact same result both times. I did not get any errors at any point.
I'd really rather not have to re-register everything, set up Mail again, and re-register and set up a bunch of third-party apps, so suggestions on how to get Migration Assistant to behave would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance!

If you used Setup Assistant during the Lion installation process your accounts should have been transferred exactly as they were backed up. Did you see any error messages? It sounds like your library folder isn't there. Is it possible you excluded your library from the backup?
For what it is worth, when I performed a clean install of Lion on my desktop my migration was perfect and when I replaced my MBP with a MBA migration assistant had me up and running in 90 minutes without the need to configure anything.
Since you did this twice I really have to wonder about your backup source.

  • Migration Assistant at 10.8.1. freezing?

Have older and new Macbook Airs, both on 10.8.1. Migration Assistant starts but hanging; one run overnight  was stuck (?) at 1 hour 50 minutes this AM, re-re-attempting now and at 2 hours 5 minutes for the last half hour without any change.
    Is it hung?
Does it take longer than it says?
Have use this twice on other Macs successfully. Worked fine but my recollection is is took a long time...
    Thanks,

    Which MBP?

  • Help needed with Migration Assistant

How and where do I find the Migration Assistant on my new iMac running on OS X 10.9.4?  I skipped the migration assistant at initial startup.  I have it installed on my old PC.  Now I am supposed to start it on my iMac.  I can't find it.  It's probably right in front of me.  Help please.

It's in the "Utilities" folder inside your "Applications" folder.
You could also just use Spotlight to find it.
On the initial Mac startup, it is referred to as "Setup Assistant" in lieu of Migration Assistant. If you skip the process, you will have issues if you want to use the same user name that you previously used.

  • HT4889 Am I wrong or does Migration Assistant not work in Mountain Lion (10.8.2) when migrating from a PowerPC running Tiger (10.4.11)? Apple really needs to get on the ball or face losing people buying their new desktop products.

The title alone speaks to my frustration about this issue.
Used the process that was recommended by Apple to migrate from my "Lampshade" iMac (PPC running 10.4.11) to the new iMac (Intel running 10.8.2) and I got bupkiss...
Just a spinning wheel (not beachball) and no drive recognized using Migration Assistant for both nor when using Target Mode on the iMac running 10.4.11 and Migration Assistant on the iMac running 10.8.2. Which is ironic, or more accurately oxymoronic, since the iMac in Target Mode (10.4.11) is recognized on the desktop of the iMac running 10.8.2 but not in the Migration Assistant. And before you can misdiagnose..it is not the Thunderbolt connection since I have the Apple recommended Thunderbolt to Firewire adapter and also used the Firewire 400 to 800 cable to expedite the transfer.
    On a personal note...
I'm not bashing Apple for this...they are "head and shoulders" above the competition in what they do but I've been burned a few times so I feel I can share a small bit of loyal customer advice...I understand your iOS and mobile products hold huge sway in company focus and market-share but I find it a tad unwise to slack on the desktop applications. I don't recall any app for the iPhone/iPad family being made on the iPhone/iPad...only from desktop applications if I recall correctly. And how can I clearly "Move my Mac even further ahead"  as your marketing states when I can't even migrate my files from my old Mac to my new one in a simple fashion as per your instructions?
I thank anyone in advance with an answer or even a workaround for this issue and please have a great day.

Migration from Mac OS X v10.4 Tiger to OS X Lion
Migration from Mac OS X v10.4 computers to OS X Lion over your Wi-Fi or a wired network is not supported. However, if both Macs are equipped with a FireWire port, you can use Target Disk Mode to transfer your data:
Verify that both Macs are equipped with a FireWire port. Note that different model Macs may have different FireWire connectors, which will require an appropriate cable, such as FireWire 400 to FireWire 800.
On the Mac you want to transfer data from, Restart, and immediately hold the T key.
Wait for the FireWire logo to appear on the screen.  If it does not, restart and try again.
Connect both Macs via the FireWire cable.
On the Mac you want to transfer data to, Open the Migration Assistant application.
Select the option "From another Mac, PC, Time Machine backup, or other disk" and click Continue.
Select the option "From a Time Machine backup or other disk" and click Continue.
Select your other Mac's volume, such as "Macintosh HD", from the list, and click Cont
EDIT: Actually I realize you did follow these directions and if your drive is seen on the new Mac it should work. You're entitled to free Apple support with the new purchase, I'd give them a call.

  • Can I stop Migration assistant and run setup instead?

While running setup on my new iMac, I was prompted to transfer data from my old computer using Migration assistant.  I thought I was just transferring the user profiles but it seems to be transferring all the associated documents and downloads.  It's taking a long time and I'd rather stop the process and just setup the new computer from scratch. Is this possible? I dont actually want all the crap my kids downloaded over the last few years clogging up my new system ...

If you were transferring files during the initial setup, you were using Setup Assistant. Migration Assistant can be run later; however, it will automatically create a new user account (because you've already set up an account during the setup), so you'll wind up with two accounts and duplicate folders which will take a while to sort.
If you just want to drag over certain files, best to use target disk mode (you need a firewire cable):
    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH10725
If you want to use that, you can just erase your drive using the recovery option and then download/reinstall your OS again.
