Migration assistant and 2nd user account

Yesterday I set up my new Mac Mini and used Migration Assistant to transfer files from my PC to my new Mac.
I can't now access the files as a 2nd user, as I am being prompted for a password. I can't remember setting a password for a 2nd user account. If I did it would be the same as my Administrators account.
Any suggestions on how I can access the 2nd user account?
I presume I will later on be able to transfer files from 2nd user account to my Mac account and then delete the 2nd user account.
I am a new Mac user.

From the main account on your Mac, the one you are now signed into, open a Finder window and go to the Users folder and right click on that second user account. Select Get Info from the list that comes up. When that opens scroll down to the bottom and click the small Lock icon and type in your Admin password. Once the lock icon is open click on the Plus ( + ) sign and add your current username, the one you are now logged into to the list for Sharing & Permissions and then  give it both Read & Write access. Then on the icon with the little gear and downward facing triangle click that and select Apply to Enclosed items. That will propagate those permission down to all folders and files in that second user account.
you should then be able to access all the folders in that second user account and copy those files over to your main account. Once you have done that you can go into User & Groups in System Preferences and delete, remove, that second account.

  • Migration Assistant, now two user accounts

Hi, I've just purchased a Macbook Pro.  I've just completed the migration assistant and its transferred all my files, photos and itunes to my macbook but under a different user account to the one my computer was set up with.  Any ideas how I can merge the two (transfer the info over) and delete the second one?
    Many thanks, Louise

A = First user account created on the new machine (Admin)
B = User account migrated over (account status unknown)
1: Log into A and make sure B is a Admin user in System Preferences > Accounts
2: While in A, transfer files via the Users/Shared  folder
Programs usually are installed into the Applications folder for all accounts to use, but some have particular settings saved into each user account.
Best thing is to just use the program again and make new settings which get saved in User B.
Once you have everything up on A, then delete B from the System Preferences > Accounts.
    Optional: for more security,
it's best to create a new Admim user while logged into A, lets call it C, and then logging into C and changing A to Standard user from Admin, then using A all the time like normal.
It's a little more work involved using the computer when your accessing the Applicaitons folder (rarely), and having to manually check for updates, but your computer is much more secure as A is now a Standard User with little "powers" so in case something bad happens it can't do much to your computer (unless you give it your Admin password of course.)

  • When migrating from a pc to  macbook pro migration assistant caused multiple user accounts how do I get the data all in to one account now that it is migrated ?

I am switching over to apple from a PC platform and I have tried to use migration assistant to transfer the stuff on my PC to my macbook pro. When i tried the first time the two went to sleep due the long time required to transfer 13 GB of data and the transfer failed. I tried to transfer again only opting for some of the data  but when I did it created a second user account . I tried again and now I have transferred most of the data but I have it in three user accounts. Not what I wanted to do. Is there an easy fix for this or do Ineed to start from scratch ?

Open the Users folder on the internal drive, drag all of the other home folders to the desktop, and then move the files inside to the desired locations.

  • Migration Assistant created new user account & can't delete it

Hi - I'm a new Mac user (MacBook Pro). I seem to have an extra account and am not sure why. Here's what happened:
I setup my MacBook Pro and did not run Migration Assistant at that time. I later ran Migration Assistant to migrate PC files to the MacBook. A second account was created after the migration. All my PC content is in the second account. None in the original account. When I look at the Users & Groups in System Preferences, I see that both accounts are Admin accounts.
I do not want the original account that was created for me on the MacBook Pro before I trasnferred any of my PC files over.  I just want to keep the account that was created to house all my PC files when they were migrated over.  However I cannot migrate that original account - the " - " is just greyed out.
Please can someone advise how I delete it.  I do not want two admin user acconts - just the onen with all my PC files in.
I realise I should have done the PC transfer at start up using "set up assistant" but for whatever reasons I chose to delay it by a day or so and hence used Windows Migration Assistant.
Please tell me how I can delete the surplus user account created for me originally when I used the Mac for the first time.
Thanks in advance for all feedback and advice.  This is my first Mac after 20 years of Windows, so big step for me and still learning!  So easy to understand instructions please would be bonus
    thanks all

Unfortunately I see that no one has been able to help me with this . . . so instead of addressing the question above. can someone please tell me how to reset my Mac to "factory settings", ie how it was the day I bought it and before I switched it on for the first time.  Delete everything on there now. That way I will do set up properly and transfer data from my PC first of all instead of revisiting it.
Please can someone tell me how to do this
    Many thanks

  • Migrated files and New User Account

    Hello,
New Mac user here.  I successfully migrated all the content from my old PC onto my Mac Mini and it was put into a new user account.  I'd like to transfer this content into the Admin account and delete the added user.  What's the best way to go about doing this?  Thanks so much!

Use Quicktime Player version 7 instead of Quicktime 10.
Mac OS X 10.6 includes QuickTime versions 10.0 and 7.6.3. The QuickTime 7 player will only be present if a QuickTime Pro key was present at the time of installation, or if specified as part of a custom install, or individually downloaded.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/dl923
Snow Leopard update 10.6.4 included an update to 7.6.6 (if installed). You can install it from the above link even though it says for 10.6.3. It's the same version of QuickTime Player 7.6.6.
Only QuickTime Player 7.6.3 or 7.6.6 can be updated to "Pro".

  • Migration Assistant created admin user w/ Macintosh HD volume on desktop

    Hi,
    Summary:
MBP 17" (running Leopard) logic board died
Retrieved hard drive from MBP and put in USB 2.0 caddy
Bought Mac Mini 2.5 intel core i5 w/ latest Mountain Lion
Used for a couple of days as main Administrator user, set up a VPN etc, every working fine.
Made a back up using Time Machine on a USB connected My Passport Edge for Mac
Used Migration Assistant to transfer user account from MBP HD (with Leopard) - this was the main adminstrator (not root superuser) of the MBP
When prompted, renamed the Leopard user account to MacBook so no conflict with new Mountain Lion administrator user
Transferred everything but applications and download folder of the main (administrator) user on the MBP.
    All appeared successful.
Restarted Mac Mini and logged into the User account created by Migration Assistant---all files there etc so far so good.
Then I noticed that this migrated user still had Admintrator rights and appears to have reset some of the global settings effecting the original ML admin user (the one I eventually want to carry on using)
First inkly of this was that the VPN server I set up was no longer recognised by Safari in any accounts on the machine.
Logged into original ML administrator user and changed the migrated MBP user to a 'standard' user with no rights to do change settings on the computer.
[still can't get Safari to recognise the VPN proxy server]
Decided I'd better make a back-up to the Time Machine on the My Passport, but had to follow these instructions http://pondini.org/TM/A4.html for a 'Full Reset of Time Machine'. Which did the job.
Then I logged back into the migrated MBP user account to look around. There on the desktop is a volume called 'Macintosh HD' (the same as the main computer default name that is used my Mountain Lion.
When I do a get info on this volume it tells me the following:
    Kind: Volume
Created: Friday, 19 October 2012 (which is an odd date)
    Modified: Today ...
    Version 10.8.2
    Formal: Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
    Capacity: 499.25GB
    Available: 361.32GB
    Used .....(127.93 GB on disk)
              Sharing and Permissions
                   You can only read
                   system Read & Write
                   wheel Read only
                   everyone Read only
Can I delete this volume off the desktop or will that mean I lose all the files and folders for this user? Why is there a 137GB volume on the desktop?
Also, as it's called Macintosh HD (the same as Mountain Lion's Computer name) isn't this likely to be causing some clashes?
I will eventually be deleting this migrated user, once I have all the emails, notes, etc off Entourage's Main Identity imported into Outlook 10. In the meantime this volume on the desktop is worrying me.
My question is: what should I do about this double Macintosh HD volume on the migrated MBP user account?
    Thanks for your help.
    Cheers,
    Tracy

There are settings in Finder's Preferences to show Hard Disks on the desktop. So, that is likely normal. Deleting it would be bad.

  • I just ran migration assistant, and now I have two accounts on my new iMac...how do I merge my iPhoto libraries?

I just ran migration assistant, and now I have two accounts on my new iMac...how do I merge my iPhoto libraries? Is there anyway to do it without using an external hard drive?

    Yes there is.
1: Log out and into the account you later want to remove.
2: Open your Pictures folder and look for the iPhoto Library.
3: Right or control click on it, a menu appears and choose the option "Show Package Contents", it's really a folder.
4: Find the folder called "Originals", select it and use the Finder menu to Duplicate it.
5: Move the Copy of Originals to the Desktop. Close the window.
6: From the Finder menu, select Go Computer.
7: A window appears with your boot drive, double click it and on the Users folder inside.
8: Select the OTHER users folder and open the folder called Public, inside is a folder called "DropBox"
9: Drag the Copy of Originals to that DropBox folder, it will copy it.
    10. Log out and into the other account and access the DropBox folder, your files can then be imported into that iPhoto user Library from within the program itself.

I am trying to transfer files from my old pc to my new mac. When I go to migration assistant, and hit the continue button on the introductory screen, I get a message that says M Asst wants to make changes - type your password to allow this.   What is my password or how do I set one up for this?

When you set  up your Mac you had to enter a admin password to set up your user account.
If you did not enter one then try using the  "blank window" as your password. ie Just hit return with nothing entered.

  • Migration Assistant created 4 duplicate accounts

After using Migration Assistant to move my account from my Dual 800 G4 to my new MacBook Pro (both running 10.4.6), I noticed 3 additional copies of my account in the Accounts pane in System Preferences.
Only one shows up in the login window at startup. In the Accounts pane, they all show the same name and short name.
In NetInfo Manager, all 4 appear in the /users directory and all have identical information (name, home, realname, uid, generateduid, writerstimpassword, gid, writers_realname, picture)
While this isn't causing any problems so far, I think I need to get rid of those duplicates. Is NetInfo Manager the right place to do that? I'm worried that deleting one might delete them all...
    Thanks!
    15" MacBook Pro & PowerMac G4 Dual 800MHz   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

Deleting the duplicate entries in the NetInfo Manager should not delete them all; if you find that it does, you can reset or restore the NetInfo database, and recreate a new account with the original short name if needed. To back up the current NetInfo database manually, open the Terminal in the /Applications/Utilities/ folder, and enter 'sudo periodic daily' without the quote marks. You will be asked to provide your administrator password, which won't appear in the window as it is being typed.

  • I recently bought a new macbook pro and set it up using the migration assistant and my mac mini.  I can't get the text message forwarding feature to work with both computers.

I recently bought a new macbook pro and set it up using the migration assistant from my mac mini.  I can't get the text message forwarding feature to work with both computers.  It keeps saying that I only have 2 devices setup, my iPad and my macbook pro.  When I mess with the setting on my mac mini, it goes from saying that that is one of the devices to my macbook pro being the 2nd device.  I think that something happened as a result of my using the migration assistant and now it thinks that my macbook pro and my mac mini are one and the same computer.  Any ideas?

    Thanks, Sig.
The old computer is a 2.6 Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo
The new one is a 2.3 GHz intel core i7
In going over this, thanks to "tallking it out" with you, I did discover the Text Edit problem.  Because I've still been unable to get the new computer text size (fonts or whatever) to match the old computer, I did not notice that the curser is now different--the line midway down the curser has to be placed on the line I am working upon, otherwise the edits go elsewhere on the page.  Now, with a bit of difficulty, I am able to get Text Edit to work correctly.
If you have any ideas as to why my menu bar and Text Edit type are still so slow, I'd love to have them.
(I went through the process you suggested earlier, re my Trackpad preferences, and found no improvement.)

  • Migration assistant added second user did not merge data: iTunes

I set up my new mac at the store then came home and connected my OLD iMac to the new via Firewire. I used Migration Assistant, and the migration took about 90 minutes. When it was done I had two parallel usernames; my old username with the old desktop look and stuff and the new computer's username I set up with the clerk at the Mac Store. Now I have two separate users on my computer, complete with two separate iTunes. When I look in the finder under Macintosh HD/Users, I see an icon for the new user (the little house) and a folder labeled with the old username but it has a red "negative" circle over it (like a push icon on an iPhone, but with a minus sign in the middle), plus a Shared folder.
The weird thing is that all the documents and stuff merged, but I have to go to the old user to use iTunes. My old computer did also have 2 users (why? I have no idea) and it brought the iTunes library I did not use in, but not the massive library I do use in. I teach a fitness class and have about 100 unique playlists and ALOT of music on that thing - but the wrong library was brought in. Now I have to switch back to the old user to use iTunes and that just seems silly. I have tried 'add to library" to try to bring the stuff over but it can't see into the other user I guess.
Any suggestions? It is so frustrating that my whole library is there but I can't access it on the new user after spending all that money.
    Thanks!

Read here on why a second user was added and how to remedy.

  • Time Machine, Migration Assistant, and a BIG headache

Set up my new rMBP from a time machine backup on external and worked great. I removed some applications from the dock that didn't transfer over successfully (i.e. Word 2004). I didn't include iTunes during the transfer.  Once time machine restore was complete, everything on the rMBP worked great.  I wanted to get my iTunes from the external and so I used the Migration Assistant to copy over JUST the music.  I unchecked all the boxes except Music.  Took over 1 hour just to copy over 30GB of music and so I was suspicious...
After completion, I see that it copied over my music, BUT
         - all Documents gone
         - applications previously deleted WERE BACK (i.e. Word 2004)
Went back to my old 2010 MBP to do another time machine backup, and signed into Mail....
Signed into Mail on the rMBP....
Got an email that my apple ID was used to sign into iCloud....
Then now rMBP Mail can't access ANY of my email accounts....
What in the world happened?  I just wanted to copy over my Music and now it's a BIG headache.....
I knew I should have avoided Migration Assistant and should have transferred over Music upon initial setup of the rMBP....
Tried to restore the rMBP from time machine but cannot b/c the time machine backup was done under snow leopard....
So uninstalled Mavericks and reinstalling....1 hour wait to download...
Then (hopefully) will restore from time machine (make sure to include Music this time)....which takes about 2 hours....
So 3 hours just to get Music, when it should just be a simple copy/paste job....
On the bright side, I got a Samsung display and so I'm happy with that...the display is sharp, evenly bright, and no creaking case

    Hey hp12c,
Thanks for the question. The following article may provide the information you are looking for:
    Mac Basics: Time Machine
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1427
    Restoring specific files or folders
Choose Enter Time Machine from the Time Machine menu and the restore interface appears. You can literally see your windows as they appeared "back in time."
You can use the timeline on the right side of the window to reach a certain point back in time (the timeline shows the times of all backups on your backup drive). If you don’t know exactly when you deleted or changed a file, you can use the back arrow to let Time Machine automatically travel through time to show you when that folder last changed.
Note: Dates in pink indicate the data resides on your Time Machine backup device. Dates in white indicate the data resides on your Mac. In OS X Mountain Lion and Lion, portable Macs have the feature of local snapshots. See this article for details.
You can also perform a Spotlight search in the Time Machine Finder Window search field to find a file. Simply type the Spotlight search field and use the back arrow to have Time Machine search through your backups to find what you are looking for.
Before you restore a file, you can also use Quick Look to preview a file to make sure its the one you want. Highlight the file and press the Space Bar to bring up a quick look.
To restore, select the file/folder and click the "Restore" button. The file will automatically be copied to the desktop or appropriate folder.  If the file you are restoring has another file in the same location with the same name, you will be prompted to choose which file to keep or keep both.
    Thanks,
    Matt M.

  • How do I share music in 2nd user account?

I have had so much trouble with itunes 7.3 that I went back to 7.2. But I still can't burn, it just keeps looking like it's burning but never does and never finishes. . So, I want to try burning in a 2nd user account I created. I know I need to move a folder ? a itunes folder to the shared folder. I just need more info on all what's involved. I thought I read it somewhere at this website, but where? A frustated mac user. mmmmm.... Your help appriceiated.

I option dragged the 47 GB itunes folder to the shared folder. I then loged into the 2nd account , opened itunes, opened preferences, set the library to shared folde, itunes. Now what. No music is showing. Is there something else I need to do? This is not the first time I opened itunes in this 2nd account. I did so prior to this switch.
I am so, so frustrated with this iTunes 7.3 screwing up my burning, artwork and who knows what else. 2 + months of ****.
One thing I should mention, I have tried to burn in safe mode, still no luck. mmmm.
My next question is going to be , if I back up the music folder with the songs only, then trash every darn thing I can find thats iTunes, Then reinstall 7.2, then drag the backed up iTunes music song folder into iTunes, thus reimporting them, will it work? Will it have the song names and other info?
Or would I be seeing song # 1 thru 1,600 without names?
    Thanks.
