Migration Assistant and File Vault

I have File Vault enabled for my home folder on my iBook. What will I need to watch out for when migrating files to my new MBP?

IIRC, you can't migrate file-vaulted user accounts. Check out http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=25773 for details. What I think you have to do is disable it, migrate it, then reenable. I don't use it, so I may be off-base. Check the linked article.

IMO, wrong choice. Start over, using a FireWire cable and following the steps in Pondini's Setup New Mac guide.

I am trying to transfer files from my old pc to my new mac. When I go to migration assistant, and hit the continue button on the introductory screen, I get a message that says M Asst wants to make changes - type your password to allow this.   What is my password or how do I set one up for this?

When you set  up your Mac you had to enter a admin password to set up your user account.
If you did not enter one then try using the  "blank window" as your password. ie Just hit return with nothing entered.

I just ran migration assistant, and now I have two accounts on my new iMac...how do I merge my iPhoto libraries? Is there anyway to do it without using an external hard drive?

    Yes there is.
1: Log out and into the account you later want to remove.
2: Open your Pictures folder and look for the iPhoto Library.
3: Right or control click on it, a menu appears and choose the option "Show Package Contents", it's really a folder.
4: Find the folder called "Originals", select it and use the Finder menu to Duplicate it.
5: Move the Copy of Originals to the Desktop. Close the window.
6: From the Finder menu, select Go Computer.
7: A window appears with your boot drive, double click it and on the Users folder inside.
8: Select the OTHER users folder and open the folder called Public, inside is a folder called "DropBox"
9: Drag the Copy of Originals to that DropBox folder, it will copy it.
    10. Log out and into the other account and access the DropBox folder, your files can then be imported into that iPhoto user Library from within the program itself.

  • Time Machine, Migration Assistant, and a BIG headache

Set up my new rMBP from a time machine backup on external and worked great. I removed some applications from the dock that didn't transfer over successfully (i.e. Word 2004). I didn't include iTunes during the transfer.  Once time machine restore was complete, everything on the rMBP worked great.  I wanted to get my iTunes from the external and so I used the Migration Assistant to copy over JUST the music.  I unchecked all the boxes except Music.  Took over 1 hour just to copy over 30GB of music and so I was suspicious...
After completion, I see that it copied over my music, BUT
         - all Documents gone
         - applications previously deleted WERE BACK (i.e. Word 2004)
Went back to my old 2010 MBP to do another time machine backup, and signed into Mail....
Signed into Mail on the rMBP....
Got an email that my apple ID was used to sign into iCloud....
Then now rMBP Mail can't access ANY of my email accounts....
What in the world happened?  I just wanted to copy over my Music and now it's a BIG headache.....
I knew I should have avoided Migration Assistant and should have transferred over Music upon initial setup of the rMBP....
Tried to restore the rMBP from time machine but cannot b/c the time machine backup was done under snow leopard....
So uninstalled Mavericks and reinstalling....1 hour wait to download...
Then (hopefully) will restore from time machine (make sure to include Music this time)....which takes about 2 hours....
So 3 hours just to get Music, when it should just be a simple copy/paste job....
On the bright side, I got a Samsung display and so I'm happy with that...the display is sharp, evenly bright, and no creaking case

    Hey hp12c,
Thanks for the question. The following article may provide the information you are looking for:
    Mac Basics: Time Machine
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1427
    Restoring specific files or folders
Choose Enter Time Machine from the Time Machine menu and the restore interface appears. You can literally see your windows as they appeared "back in time."
You can use the timeline on the right side of the window to reach a certain point back in time (the timeline shows the times of all backups on your backup drive). If you don’t know exactly when you deleted or changed a file, you can use the back arrow to let Time Machine automatically travel through time to show you when that folder last changed.
Note: Dates in pink indicate the data resides on your Time Machine backup device. Dates in white indicate the data resides on your Mac. In OS X Mountain Lion and Lion, portable Macs have the feature of local snapshots. See this article for details.
You can also perform a Spotlight search in the Time Machine Finder Window search field to find a file. Simply type the Spotlight search field and use the back arrow to have Time Machine search through your backups to find what you are looking for.
Before you restore a file, you can also use Quick Look to preview a file to make sure its the one you want. Highlight the file and press the Space Bar to bring up a quick look.
To restore, select the file/folder and click the "Restore" button. The file will automatically be copied to the desktop or appropriate folder.  If the file you are restoring has another file in the same location with the same name, you will be prompted to choose which file to keep or keep both.
    Thanks,
    Matt M.

  • Migration Assistant Deleted Files from New Mac

I had bought a new laptop and wanted to put the files from my old laptop onto my new one and used the time machine and migration assistant. When I realized that i forgot to transfer a folder, I went back on the migration assistant and only clicked to transfer the desktop folder and no other files. Once the transfer was complete, I realized that all my files that I had accumulated recently onto my new laptop were deleted. Is there anyway to get those files back (they weren't on the time machine, since they were from the past week or so)?

Did you have TM running with the new laptop.. if so you should be able to recover the lost files.. otherwise they could be gone.
Did you have the same user logged on as you had in the original setup.. when you migrate it is so so important NOT to use the same login name.. by doing it twice you might have messed it up. Unless you were backing up the files are gone.. but make sure there is not another user created on the disk.
You might be able to undelete files but I am not very hopeful. That might be the last opportunity though to recover.

How do I install Outlook Express??
I want to use my new Imac.....

Disk storage issues frequently happen if the hard disc is over 85% full.    Make sure your trash can is emptied after backing up any files you want to keep elsewhere.

  • Migration Assistant and Adobe License Not working

I used migration assistant and my adobe cs3 license is not valid. Adobe had me delete a file and download their license recovery tool. When I launch it a non functioning terminal window comes up. I was told the user ID and password would be the next thing I saw. Any suggestions?

I believe Migration Assistant was upgraded for Lion early in the week.  Do you have the latest?  Should be Version 4.

  • I recently bought a new macbook pro and set it up using the migration assistant and my mac mini.  I can't get the text message forwarding feature to work with both computers.

I recently bought a new macbook pro and set it up using the migration assistant from my mac mini.  I can't get the text message forwarding feature to work with both computers.  It keeps saying that I only have 2 devices setup, my iPad and my macbook pro.  When I mess with the setting on my mac mini, it goes from saying that that is one of the devices to my macbook pro being the 2nd device.  I think that something happened as a result of my using the migration assistant and now it thinks that my macbook pro and my mac mini are one and the same computer.  Any ideas?

    Thanks, Sig.
The old computer is a 2.6 Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo
The new one is a 2.3 GHz intel core i7
In going over this, thanks to "tallking it out" with you, I did discover the Text Edit problem.  Because I've still been unable to get the new computer text size (fonts or whatever) to match the old computer, I did not notice that the curser is now different--the line midway down the curser has to be placed on the line I am working upon, otherwise the edits go elsewhere on the page.  Now, with a bit of difficulty, I am able to get Text Edit to work correctly.
If you have any ideas as to why my menu bar and Text Edit type are still so slow, I'd love to have them.
(I went through the process you suggested earlier, re my Trackpad preferences, and found no improvement.)

  • I cannot log in to a MAC 10.5.8 and File Vault was NOT turned on.

    Dear Mac Experts:
I know that there are many pages of information about using, remembering and managing passwords. I have read most of them.I know the passwords and File Vault was not on.  I am working at someone's home on their computer and running their business.  The computer is running MAC 10.5.8 and I don't know if it can be updated.  The computer had  an Admin account and no user accounts.  I tried to change this so the compuer would be secure but my client did not want to.    When I left yesterday the computer was fine.  When I came in today there were a number of apps hanging.  I forced quit Firefox and some other apps and logged out an shut down the computer.  When I tried to log into the Admin Account which is the main user account  I got the  error messages below:
Your FileVault-protected home folder did not open and needs to be repaired.
click ok to repair the folder and continue logging in.
    I clicked ok
then I got a new error message:
You are unable to log in to the user account "x" at this time because and error occured.
    Clicked OK
File Vault was not turned on at anytime that I know of in the last couple of months.  I luckily had a guest user set up and logged in as guest. In order to create another Admin account I had to use the  password for the initial Admin main user account which unlocked the preferences pane and allowed me to create a new Admin Account.
Checked that FileVault was turned off.
After reading all of your comments and suggestions for the last 2 hours my head is spinning.
I don't know unix or type commands.  I don't know where the install discs are.
As the new Admin I went into the keychain files and tried to verify and repair the original Admin's info.
    Here is what I got:
    Verification started
Checking keychain configuration for Susan F (user ID=501)
    Home directory is /Users/suero
    Checked login keychain
    Error: login keychain not found

    Home directory is /Users/suero
    Checked login keychain

The machine is backed up onto a lacie external hard drive every hour.
In addition,  while I was poking around I found the following:
    com.apple.kerberos.kdc   certificate
    not trusted
    com.apple.systemdefault certificate
    not trusted
Could there be some malware at work?  What can I do to get her files, home directory and everything back?
Thank you in advance for your patience with an old OS and a MAC user who does't feel comfortable mucking around under the hood.

    Hi Tracy,
I don't suspect Malware yet, Id guess Disk corruption or failing Hard Drive with Files not found.
Could be many things, we should start with this...
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu at top of the screen. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    5. Click Repair Disk, (not Repair Permissions). Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.)
If perchance you can't find your install Disc, at least try it from the Safe Boot part onward.

  • Time Machine and File Vault question

I just completed a clean install of OS x mavericks and then used my time machine back up to restore the mac.
The whole process was confusing for many reasons and I just want to get some clarification/verification on my next actions.
When I enter time machine preferences and click select disk. It gives me two choices. One in the group Back Up Disks and One in available disks. The confusing I have is that it is the same external hd. So which should I pick if I want to keep my original time machine backups?
The other question I have is, this whole journey started with me wanting to turn on file vault. I am using a late 2012 Mac Mini updated to Mavericks came with Mountain Lion.
Should I be able to use both an encrypted time machine (external hd) and file vault?
    Thanks for the help.

The difference is that do yo want to combine the backus you made before with the previous backups (group Back Up Disks) or start a whole new backup (available disks). Either option will retain the previous backups unless you overtly delete them. I would select that later to start a new set of backups.

  • On my mac should i turn on the firewall; and file vault or just leave them off?

On my mac should I turn on the firewall; and file vault or just leave them off?

Yes, you should turn on your Firewall, and in the advanced options, select 'stealth mode'.
Unless you want to encrypt your hard drive, you don't need File Vault and can leave it off.

  • Aperture and File Vault

I am using Aperture and File Vault on the same Lion OS X system.  I cannot open Aperture and get an Aperture window and see if my precious and valuable photos did, actually, get captured by Aperture before I deleted the photos from my SD Card.
The spinning beach ball has run for days upon days.  I have restarted.  I have nothing else running in the background.  I just let Aperture run overnight.  I get the spinning beach ball forever.  I do not ever see the Aperture window or view the recently uploaded precious and valuable photos.
What can I do?  It will not be easy to withdraw File Vault because my hard drive is well-over half full.
I am re-rating this app as "hate it" on 3/12/2012.  A year earlier I had rated it "don't like it."  So, I have dropped the rating from two stars--seriously bad--to one star--cannot be worse.
I have encrypted the hard drive File Vault in system preferences.  Apparently, this creates an over-whelming problem with Aperture because File Vault must encrypt and unencrypt the Aperture library which is presumably huge.  The Aperture library is presumably well over 1 GB because the collection of all the photos and videos in your whole life add up.  Apple combines them all-together into one ginormous file.  In my case, the Aperture library is over 30 GB.
So, the problem is, at least, recently:  I took a lot of photos in a recent travel adventure.  I uploaded them to Aperture.  Then I deleted the photos off the SD card.  Now, Aperture will not load.  It's been several days of trying, and I still don't know if I have lost my precious photos of the adventure with my son.
    I am beyond angry.
I have stuck by Apple with Aperture since 1.1.  I didn't like 1.1.  I didn't like 2.0.  I have absolutely hated 3.0.  Even if you did come out with an amazing product, I would likely not purchase it again.  I am so thoroughly disappointed and now enraged.

Your anger is understandable (and not something anyone here can help you with).
Your problem seems much more likely to come from File Vault than from Aperture.  Lots of users use Aperture all the time (with large Libraries) with few problems (most of which are pretty easily resolved).  For File Vault problems, you might get a more useful response in the Lion forum.
Once you do get things resolved, I strongly suggest finding a program other than Aperture.  V. 1.1 came out in 2006.  Six years is a _long_ time to use software that you don't like.

  • After reinstalling Snow Leopard, migration assist and doesn't see my time machine disk.

I had to erase my hard drive and reinstall Snow Leopard and when I tried to us Migration Assistant, it didn't see the Time Machine disk. Restoring from Time Machine directly didn't work because I couldn't gain access to and backup prior to the reinstall although the backups are all there when I open the Time Machine disk and look at folders from before the reinstall they all open perfectly.  How do I get to restore from pre-reinstall dates backups?

I couldn't get Mail to open.  It bounced in the dock but wouldn't open.  All other programs were very slow, Disk utility showed the disk couldn't be repaired, so I erased and reinstalled and restored from time machine.  Everything we OK for a couple of weeks, then all the response times became very extended or wouldn't open at all. Took the iMac to the Apple Store where they checked out the hardware and found it to be OK.  They told me to erase, reinstall and use migration assistant to bring only my profile over.  The erase and reinstall were fine, but the time machine drive could not be seen by migration assistant, and I don't have access through the time machine utility to any backups prior to the first reinstall.

  • Someone just did 'migration assistance' and it wasn't me. Is someone stealing my information?

Just got an email saying I filed a case for 'migration assistance' and I never did this. Is someone stealing my information?

it's from apple. i checked the website and it shows up under my rMBP cases
Just called Apple and said that someone else must have been a number or letter off on the serial number and that they'll correct the mistake so I guess that's that.
