Migration Assistant & Assimilating/Merging Old & new accounts

Hi,
I took a leap of faith by purchasing my latest new Mac, choosing the new Intel iMac and not a PPC. A huge leap in technology- G3 iBook 466SE Calmshell to a iMac 2.0 ICD 20" loaded w/2GB ram, 500GB Hard Drive, and worth the extra $75; 256MB of video ram. I totally dig the new iMac with the exception of a few minor quirks which I'll post them somewhere else in the discussions here.
Now on to my question at hand. When I 1st unpacked the new system I didn't use the Migration Assistant right away as I suppose I was excited and so were all of my friends and coworkers so I created a user account for my friends to play with at work for a day and for my other friends when we all got together one weekend to check it out. BTW Photo Booth and Comic Life rocks when showing it off! Anyway, I made a new account for myself and one for everyone else to use/play with. After several days went by, I decided to use Migration Assistant to move all my files from the iBook to the iMac. It took almost 3 hours! I suppose the length of time was consumed by Spotlight indexing the new data almost 40GB. My not so serious delima is that now I want to assimilate or merge all of the accounts into one. Not much to even worry about on the account I created for my friends to use, just a few Photo Booth pics and a Comic Life which I'm not worried about as I've made copies and emailed them out already. I want to merge my new account with my old one from my iBook without the loss of most of my email iTunes, music and new Safari bookmarks etc. Is there an easy way to do this or am I just unaware that this is almost a "no brainer"?
Thanks for any help, tips or suggestions.

Move the files you want to keep from one account into the /Users/Shared/ folder while logged in to that account, and then log in from the other account and drag those files to your current home folder. Once you've moved everything you want out of an account's home folder, use the Accounts pane of System Preferences to delete that account.

at this point yes, you should uninstall everything migrated, clean and then reinstall properly using the installation files.

  • How to use migration assistant without creating dual user accounts

I want to use migration assistant to transfer apps, software & files on my macbook pro to my new macbook air. How can I do this without creating two user accounts for myself on the m-book air -- my account from the m-book pro & the one that the air makes me create as soon as I do start-up? Can I just use the same name & password for both? or will that make things go badly awry?
    Thanks!

If you have not booted the MBA for the first time and gone through the Setup Assistant, then I would use the Setup Assistant to make the transfer before you even create another user account. However, if you've already created the new user account on the MBA, then create a new admine one with a different username than the account you will migrate. Log into this new account, delete the first account you made, then use Migration Assistant to transfer your account from the MBP.

  • HT4889 Migration Assistant to update my new Mountain Lion iMac from an external USB hard disk drive, it is constantly saying that it is "looking for other computers". It doesn't find the external drive. Why is it looking for other computers?

I'm trying to use Migration Assistant to update my new Mountain Lion iMac from an external USB hard disk drive. I told it to look for a drive, yet it is constantly saying that it is "looking for other computers". It doesn't find the external drive ... it just endlessly looks for other computers. Why is it looking for other computers at all, when I told it not to?

Wow, the wording in Migration Assistant is misleading. I've never used it before, so I thought I would try to copy my files from the external drive ... my old iMac died, but I managed to get everything I need off it, using the 'cp' command in single-user mode. So I guess I'll just have to manually copy the files from the external drive to the new machine. I was hoping that Migration Assistant might help somehow, but obviously not.
    Thanks for the quick reply!

  • Migration Assistant but keeping old laptop

My girlfriend has a Ibook G4 which she and I both have a user account set up on. I have now bought an IMac for myself and we want to transfer certain things to it in order for me to use that machine primarily.
I want to transfer my user account in entirety to the new Imac but we also want to move the I tunes folder (which is under her user profile) because we have much more hard drive space on the new Imac.
All of her other settings must remain on the Ibook for her continued use. Can anyone recommend the best way to accomplish this? I guess I can use migration assistant to move my user account but what is the best way to move the Itunes folder?
As I am very new to macs, will the music files under her user account now be locked to me if I transfer them to my Imac and place them in my user account?
Is it simpler just to copy both user accounts onto the new machine and if so, will the files on the laptop be unaffected (copied rather than transferred).
I hope this is clear and any advice would be appreciated.
    Ibook   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   IMac 17"

The Migration Assistant only copies, it doesn't wipe anything on the original machine.
I would recommend that you move both user accounts over, and then log in (on the new machine) as her, move the iTunes folder to the Shared folder (you'll see it under the main Users folder) and set its permissions so that you both can read and write to it (highlight it, click cmd-i, and go to the Ownership and Permissions tab - set all the values to Read/Write).
Then, log back in as yourself, and move the iTunes folder into your Music folder. When you launch iTunes, it'll recognise the library automatically.

Launch the Console application by entering the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search, and look under "User Diagnostic Reports" for crash logs related to the application(s). Select the most recent one and post the contents -- the text, please, not a screenshot. For privacy’s sake, I suggest you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report.

How do I use migration assistant to load my new Macbook Air?  Can this be done only wirelessly?

No, you can transfer from a Mac wirelessly, wired ethernet, Thunderbolt or Firewire. Your older Mac must have the same connection, but you can use adaptors if necessary. For example, you can use an Ethernet cable with an Ethernet-Thunderbolt adaptor if your older Mac has an ethernet port.
Wireless tends to be pretty slow (can take many hours) so it's recommended to choose a wired connection whenever you can.

  • Migration Assistant, 5+-year-old iMac to new iMac

A friend of mine just bought a new brand new iMac and was told by someone at the Apple Store that her old computer or operating system was "too old" for her to use the Migration Assistant to import her files, which she finds very frustrating.  She's not particularly computer savvy but does have a lot of files that are important to her.
I really didn't think any Mac should be too old to do this.  Her old iMac is somewhere between 5 and 7 years old.  I was over at her place to look at it and it was powered down, so I didn't get a chance to peek at the system profiler, but from what she told me about when she got it I assume it's either the last generation of G5 iMac or the first couple generations of Intel iMac (which look more or less the same from the outside).
There really shouldn't be any issue for her just starting it in Target Disk Mode and using Migration Assistant from her new computer, right?  The one trick is that of course the new iMac doesn't have FireWire but if we used a FireWire to Thunderbolt converter, would that work? Or, alternately, could they be connected by Ethernet?  Or is there something about the age of this computer that I'm missing?
Thanks in advance; if needed I can go over to her place (she lives up the street from me) and find out exactly what model of old iMac and OS she's using.

    Right.
FireWire Target Disk Mode is the only option to migrate from a Mac running OS X 10.4.11 "Tiger" to a Mac running Mountain Lion.
Start the older Mac in Target Disk Mode. When asked "How do you want to transfer your information" select "From a Mac, PC, Time Machine backup or other disk" then click Continue. On the next screen be sure to select "From a Time Machine backup or other disk" and not "From a Mac or PC".
This is a peculiarity that applies only when transferring information from Tiger to Mountain Lion.
The Thunderbolt to FireWire adapter will work. That's what I used.
Obviously, any old PowerPC apps will not work on her new Mac.

  • Migration Assistant only moved Apple Mail account & nothing else in Mail

    Hello,
I recently got a New MacBook Pro, now running 10.8.1. My Old Black MacBook was Running Snow Leopard 10.6.8.
I used the Migration Assistant to move everything over. So far Everything seems to have been moved over, except my mail settings, Malbox folders, Rules, and accounts. It did move my icloud mail account info, but that was it. I have 5 other Accounts with seperate POP/SMTP servers to move over. I have been able to manually Migrate all the Mailbox folders on my mac by importing them from my old mac's ~/user/Library/Mail folder, but my accounts and Extensive set of rules still have not been moved.
I first tried moving my MessageRules.plist file from my old ~/user/Library/Mail folder to my new folder of the same name, but that did not move my rules.
Any Suggestions as to how I can move my accounts and rules.
    Thank you in Advance.

  • Migration Assistant from MacPro to new iMac

Just received my new iMac with OS 10.9.  My old computer is a MacPro purchased late 2008 using OS 10.6.8.  What is best way to transfer everything to the new iMAC?  The Mac Pro has USB2, Firewire 400/800 & Gigabit Ethernet.  The new iMac has Thunderbolt, USB3 & Gigabit Ethernet.  I have a Thunderbolt to FW800 adapter so can I use that connection for Mirgration Assistant or should I use the Gigabit Ethernet connection.  Just concerned my cable for the Ethernet connection is not current.  Also concerned that don't have same problem as couple years ago when did the Mirgation Assistant from an older iMAC to a new iMAC for my wife.  Some files didn't transfer and also Permissions were totally messesd up as later when tried to recover a file from Time Machine I kept getting message that "did not have permission".  Thanks to Apple Support I finally found a solution for recovering the file.  Haven't turned on the new iMAC yet as want to make sure I do the migration assistant right - No thanks to the manuals Apple now includes with new iMacs.    Thank You for your help.

I got everything transferred to the new iMAC following Pondini's article Setup Assistant tips  mentioned above by rkaufmann87.  Thank You.  Went to the section  "Problems after using Migration Assistant" and sub section "Fixing a UID mismatch after using Migration Assistant".  Generated temp user accts, logged off all accounts and then logged on the Temp Admin user acct and deleted all other user accts.  Then restarted iMAC and did the update from Time Machine disk from older MacPro.  Then logged off the Temp Admin acct and on to the account transferred over from the MacPro.   Best read the article to get all the details.  Then had to change names etc. to make them different from the old MacPro.  Still trying to get that straightened out.  As far as I know Permissions are OK.
Now the iMAC power on is VERY SLOW.  Takes 3 min 20 sec to start up, even with all external devices disconnected.  Also having other compatibility problems.

  • Migration Assistant not finding my new iMac

I had a VERY slow MA process going from old iMac to new iMac.  So I did a little research and apparently it was so slow because by default I was getting a wireless process. So I turned off the Airport on the old iMac and conncected the machines with an ethernet cable. Now the new machine is not getting recognized by the old one.  TIA for your help.

I feel the easiest, and most reliable, way of migrating data from an old Mac to a new one is using the Time Machine backup from an external drive.
The best source for help with this process comes from "The Great Pondini".  Here's a link to his site that is, by far, the premier source for help with this transfer:
    http://pondini.org/OSX/Setup.html
Since you've already booted your Mac up and tried Migration Assistant, Setup Assistant won't be available to you (it's only available upon initial bootup of a new Mac).
I would pay particular attention to user accounts when you look at pondini's site, as Migration Assistant can create some headaches for the unwary.
    Enjoy your new iMac!

    No, I'm quite clearly not,
Having never run the setup migration or standalone migration routines I wasn't aware that it had skipped a step and I was setting up a new account. I was filling fields in expecting it to be part of the process, not a different thing entirely.
That said, I did by mistake, realised mistake, rectified it. None of that relates to my original query, which i typed in a hurry on an ipad as both macs were in meltdown.
This was a lot more annoying a process than I expected, and compounded by having to deal with a keyboardwarrior into the bargain.
The solution to original probem was turn off and on again . At that point my old mac could see the new one and the transfer started, or rather, didn't.
    You sir are a buffoon.
People come here for help, not abuse from the likes of you, if you've nothing helpful to say then stick a sock in it.
You made the error of using Migration rather than Setup Assistant, Apple didn't do that for you. I don't care how high your horse is, nobody else's hands are on your keyboard.

  • How to use migration assistant when the same user account name is on both computers

I want to migrate all my info from my MacBook to my new (to me) MacBook Pro.  I've already set up a user account on the new MBP that has the same name as the user account on the MacBook that I want to migrate.

    Snags40 wrote:
In both cases the UID for my primary User Account is 507
507?  That's odd; usually the first one created is 501, then 502, etc.  Could you have gone through 6 accounts?
Since I've migrated thru several Macs to get to the current state on the old MacBook, I suspect the UID has changed.
That could explain some of it, if you used Migration Assistant instead of Setup Assistant.  It would have taken a lot of migrations and user accounts to get to 507, I'd think.
I still have the Powerbook that preceded the MacBook.  How can I determine the UID on 10.4.11?  The right click on the Account name in User Accounts doesn't show that value.  I'd like to see if UID has changed going from 10.4 to 10.5.
Good question.  I skipped Tiger, and don't recall earlier versions, but this article may help:  http://hints.macworld.com/article.php?story=20051022175850619&query=change%252BU ID
