Migration Assistant between two MacBook Pros, both running 10.9.2

I need to migrate specific apps and data from one MacBook Pro (2.6 GHz Core 2 Duo) to another (2.5 GHz Core 2 Duo), but I don't want to migrate the entire system and all data -- largely because the "Source" HD is 1TB, and the "Destination" HD is 320GB. Both MacBook Pros running Mavericks 10.9.2. Anyone know how to "cherry pick" using Migration Assistant, especially apps that have support files in various folders in the system?
Thanks for your help!

  • When I migrated the contents of my iMac to my new MacBook Pro (both running Lion), I ended up with duplicate icons in the launchpad. How do I get rid of them?

When I used migration Assistant to transfer stuff from my iMac to my MacBook Pro, both running the latest update of Lion, I ended up with duplicate icons in the Launchpad. How do I correct this situation. Some can be deleted using the iPad method of holding down an icon until they all jiggle and then clicking the "X" to delete. However, most do not have x's appear next to them. Otherwise, the migration seemed to go okay.

Launchpad will display an icon for each copy of an application that is currently installed (as well as any aliases to those applications), so you will see more than one icon for an application if you have more than one version of the application installed or aliased. So did you create any aliases of these apps on your old computer? If so, delete them.

  • Using iMac and MacBook Pro both running OS 10.7.5

Is there an easy way to have my "sent" emails (using Apple Mail) from my iMac also show up as "sent" email from my Macbook Pro?
Using iMac and MacBook Pro both running OS 10.7.5

Yes, if you have an IMAP account. From the Mail menu bar, select
Mail > Preferences > Accounts > Mailbox Behaviors > Store sent messages on the server

  • Migration Assistant Problem: Old MacBook Pro does not see new MacAir

I have a brand new MacAir (OSX 10.7 and a 4 year old Macbook Pro (OSX 10.6)...trying to use Migration Assistant using Wifi, they're both on my network, but the new MacAir can "see" the old Macbook, but the old Macbook doesn't "see" the new MacAir...the wheel just keeps spinning as it tries to find another computer to migrate to but it just never sees it.  What am I doing wrong or what can I do to fix this problem?  Thanks!

Sounds like there are two issues:
    1.  The Migration should start from the "To" computer asking for the stuff from the "From" computer.  Sounds like you're doing it the other way.
    2.  The MacBook Air isn't visible.  Correct that by going to System Preferences ---> Sharing on your MacBook Air and see if things look good there.  You should at least see a message near the top starting with "Computers on your local network can access your computer ..."

  • HT6510 Airdrop between two Macbook Pro's is not working in Yosemite

Airdrop is not working between my Macbook Pro Late 2011 and my co-workers Macbook Pro Mid 2012 on Yosemite. We're on the same wireless network. It worked fine in Mavericks.

It's probably that UVerse modem/router you have.  I say this because I've run into similar issues with Arris modem/wifi router boxes from Comcast for a few clients.  They went out a bought an AirPrint capable printer and configured it on the network.  They could print to it from their PCs just fine (IP based printing), but none of their iOS devices would see the printer as an AirPrint device, they couldn't see any printer on the network.  The solution was to put their modem into bridge mode (while disabling the WIFI on it) and use a Netgear router behind it in normal fasion.  AirPrint worked fine after that.  After some further digging, I discovered that Arris has an issue with supporting some Multicase based protocols on their boxes.
My suggestion is to go try AirPrint on another WIFI network and see what happens.  If it works, then you have your answer.  Obviously, if the first one doesn't work, don't give up... you can't just say it's not the router beause you can't be sure what that other network has for WIFI.  Just keep an open mind when testing this.  Or you could go get yourself a router and set it up, but that of course would cost you money you may not want to spend until you're 100% sure that this is the case here.
    After a simple search, I found this.  http://forums.att.com/t5/Residential-Gateway/AirPrint-Function-Quit-After-Uverse -Install/td-p/2936993
Seems the gateway device that UVerse installs can have similar issues as I described above.  At this point, I'd look at that device as your culprit for this.  I can't think of anything else that could be causing this to not work.

  • Migration - swapping files & settings between TWO macbook pros?????

    hi everyone,
i am going to trade laptops with my wife (13" vs 15"). they are both macbook pros running 10.6.4.
i want to use migration assistant, but everything i've read about it seems like it's meant to install your existing files onto a new (i.e. blank) mac. i haven't seen anything about taking the files from A and putting them onto B, and vice versa. any tips? should i just do this manually using an external HD and forget about migration assistant?

The Migration Assistant can be restricted to transferring single user accounts. Do it with one machine and then reverse the process with the other machine. Ensure that both transferred accounts can log into their new machines and that everything works the same. Once that's finished, delete the original accounts.

  • CD Sharing Between Two MacBook Pros?

I'm wanting to share the CD drive on my new MacBook Pro so that I can access it from my older 1st generation MacBook Pro. Is this possible or only available on the Air? I'm running 10.5.5 on both machines.

I do have the latest updates installed. Considering my network sharing isn't working quite right, I will probably just reinstall Leopard on the old notebook and try again. So long as I know that CD sharing is possible between these two and I'm not chasing a ghost, I will keep trying.
    Thanks for the info.
Before you do a reinstall, let me try it between my two MBPs later today and I will report back. I have not used it in a while so it's possible that some update has changed things.
I will report back this afternoon.

  • How can a session be setup between two MacBook Pro's at different locations on high speed Internet connections, be setup to have a live recording session in Logic?

My partner and I live on opposite sides of the valley here in Phoenix. About 50 miles apart one way. We are Musicians and are working on a commercial for television, and would like to know if there is a way, between FaceTime and Logic, that we can configure our MacBook Pro's to record sessions together without having to be at the same house? When we FaceTime, he can hear my keyboard through his headphones, but we can't seem to get the signal routed into Logic and register to a track when its record enabled. Is there a way for us to save gas, and record at seperate locations, so he can engineer me and I can engineer him, while we build this project in Logic and Final Cut? Here is what we are using, we have nearly identicle setups, which was planned so we might be able to do something like this. Both of us are using Mid 2012 15" MacBook Pro's with 2.6GHz Intel i7 processors and 16GB RAM. The only difference between the two MacBooks is that his has an Optical Drive, but I removed mine and replaced it with a 2nd SSD Drive, so I have two Samsung 840 Pro's each with 512GB in my MacBook Pro. His just has one Samsung 840 Pro with 512GB. We both use Focusrite Saffire Liquid 56 Firewire Audio Interfaces, and we both use Logic Studio 9 Academic. I don't know if you need to know what we are using in order to help us figure out how to configure the MacBooks for a live session, so I figured I would give you those details just in case. If you need any more information, just let me know? Oh, we both have high speed cable Internet connections. Mine is 150Mbps speed which is the absolute fastest I can get in my area. And his is only a 50Mbps speed line.
Again, what we are looking to do is have a LIVE recording session, in Logic, with him at his house and me at my house. When we FaceTime each other, we can pretty much hear each others keyboards as if they were part of the conversation, and as crystal clear as we can hear our own when recording, but we can't seem to record enable an Audio track in Logic and route that keyboard signal into Logic and record it so we can engineer each other without either one of us having to drive to the others house, to be there to do it. If any of this even makes sense, I'm not quite sure how to better explain it. So hopefully you get what I mean, otherwise just say so, and I will try to do a better job explaining it.  :-)
Anyone who can help us with this little problem would be greatly appreciated, and quite a hero in these two humble Musicians Worlds!! So from both of us, THANK YOU in advance for any input you might be able to give us. I look forward to hearing any and all suggestions.
    Scott

    Hey Scott
You and ALOT of people are attempting to do this, myself included.
Unfortunately at this point (to my knowledge) it's a pretty CRAP setup involved that will likely leave you frustrated.
    HOWEVER:
A few things CAN be done:
IF you are getting live audio from your partner over the internet, you can re-direct that audio directly into Logic using a program called SoundFlower.
There are a few alternatives to SoundFlower, like JackTrip, and.....(the name eludes me)
(SoundFlower is from a company called Cyling 74 who also makes Max MSP. )
Once in Logic, you set your audio inputs to the track to be Soundflower. (either 16 inputs, or in this case 2)
That all being said, regardless to speed, you are still going to experience latency in the connection, and THAT is the part that will likely drive you to the mad house.
THIS all being said, I believe there are websites out there that are set up to actually do this kind of thing, (at least there WERE) but likely membership costs, and other "hidden" problems that you only learn about after you have signed on the dotted line. (Hopefully I am wrong?)
If you don't need to do a "live jam", there are always solutions like DropBox that work very well for exchanging large files quickly.
If you want to record live MIDI input from his keyboard, I am unaware of any solutions for this.
Due to the popularity of the iPad, you might want to look into the App store, and see if there is something available.
    Good luck!

  • Is it ok to do migration assistant from a Macbook Pro bought in July 2007 to a brand new Macbook Pro?

So I transferred everything from my 2007 120gb Macbook Pro (running the latest edition of Snow Leopard) to my new 512gm flash storage Macbook Pro using Migration Assistant.
It took 8 hours to transfer the data and settings over the wifi and I was afraid it wasn't going to work but it did thankfully. It was just pretty slow.
It wasn't until later that I heard from friends that sometimes the new computer could be corrupted by the old files. Is this true?
And if so, is there a way that I could start from scratch or am I totally out of luck?
    Thanks in advance!!!!

If the old computer worked well, I wouldn't worry about corruption. I've used Migration Assistant successfully many times. Are they talking about Windows computers? Those things barely work new.
You could start from scratch by booting and holding Command and R. That will bring you to the Recovery parttion and let you reinstall.

  • Getting Migration Assistant to work, Macbook Pro to Macbook Pro

I just bought a new (2011) Macbook Pro and want to transfer info from my 2009 Macbook Pro to the new one. I have tried repeatedly to do this via my wireless network with Migration Assistant, and constantly get the error message on the old Macbook that the connection fails or the new one stopped responding. Help!
    Thank you,
    Linda

Start here:  How do I set up a new Mac from an old one, its backups, or a PC?
It will explain the downsides to not starting over, and link to the article provided earlier for details and instructions.
If you don't understand the problem about extra user accounts, it means the user account(s) you transfer cannot be "merged" into the account you already set up.
If you start over, per the green box, the new Mac will be set up just like the old one.

  • Migration Assistant from Previous MacBook Pro?

Hello all. I used Migration Assistant to transfer my data from a MacBook Pro circa 2006 to a new 13" MacBook Pro, but I do not see any of the data that should have come (music, photos, fonts etc.)? Any ideas why? Thanks.

Where did you look and how did you search?

  • Migration Assistant to New Macbook Pro

    Hey guys,
I've got a 3odd year old Macbook Pro and have just ordered a brand new one.
My question is... is it sensible to use migration assistant?
My old one is full of stuff, granted the majority of it I need, but still, it has 3odd years of build up. If I use migration assistant does it transfer any errors over to my shiny new one, any risks involved? Would it be worth it to completely start from scratch with all software and files (would obviously have to transfer data files I require - pdfs, PS, Photos, Music etc) - that would be a major major job though...
    Any thoughts?
    Regards
    Simon

Thanks for you view, it's what I thought, but still I need some scary stuff to counter the ease of simply migrating everything across!
You will find plenty of "scary stuff" about the evils of a simple upgrade installation in this category of Discussions if you look for it. That's to be expected: most of the topics here are started by people that have had problems after the installation & a clean install is an easy to recommend, 'start from scratch' type solution that is often effective, even if it isn't really necessary or the most efficient way to fix whatever is wrong.
But unless you actually try the upgrade method first, It is a lot like tearing down your house & building a new one because you suspect the old one might have some problems you don't know about. Basically, you are gambling that you would have problems that justify the considerable hassle of installing everything from scratch (& that doing so would avoid those problems, which is not a certainty).
A simple, low risk way around this dilemma is to clone your startup drive before you do the upgrade. If anything goes wrong, you can easily restore the drive to the pre-install state & consider what to do next.

  • I used migration assistant for old MacBook Pro to New MacBook Pro

Today, after being on the phone to applecare I uses migration assistant to copy files, applications etc from my old macbook pro to my new one using firewire, but only somethings copied for example, none of my photos, or music came over and also a lot of the software is asking for verification and codes etc. When the applecare person asked me to restart the old macbook pro holding down the "t" key, when it restarts all it shows is a firewire icon bouncing around on the screen like a screen saver, giving me no access to the old mac and therefore having to choose the transfer "from a time machine back up or other disk" option instead of the "from another mac" option, could that be the problem? Has anyone else experiamced this?

I did choose "other disk" cause it wouldn't let me choose the "from another mac" option. I'm thinking this is why not all of my stuff transfered? Also is it strange that the old mac just had the firwire icon bouncing around on the screen the whole time?
    Thanks
