Migration Assistant but keeping old laptop

My girlfriend has a Ibook G4 which she and I both have a user account set up on. I have now bought an IMac for myself and we want to transfer certain things to it in order for me to use that machine primarily.
I want to transfer my user account in entirety to the new Imac but we also want to move the I tunes folder (which is under her user profile) because we have much more hard drive space on the new Imac.
All of her other settings must remain on the Ibook for her continued use. Can anyone recommend the best way to accomplish this? I guess I can use migration assistant to move my user account but what is the best way to move the Itunes folder?
As I am very new to macs, will the music files under her user account now be locked to me if I transfer them to my Imac and place them in my user account?
Is it simpler just to copy both user accounts onto the new machine and if so, will the files on the laptop be unaffected (copied rather than transferred).
I hope this is clear and any advice would be appreciated.
Ibook   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   IMac 17"

The Migration Assistant only copies, it doesn't wipe anything on the original machine.
I would recommend that you move both user accounts over, and then log in (on the new machine) as her, move the iTunes folder to the Shared folder (you'll see it under the main Users folder) and set its permissions so that you both can read and write to it (highlight it, click cmd-i, and go to the Ownership and Permissions tab - set all the values to Read/Write).
Then, log back in as yourself, and move the iTunes folder into your Music folder. When you launch iTunes, it'll recognise the library automatically.

Look for them on your old computer, when found copy the files to a USB drive and move them to the new computer.

Open System Preferences and select Users & Groups. Assuming the migration was successful, you now have a new account - it was migrated. Migration Assistant doesn't copy files, it copies accounts. To see your documents you'll need to log into the account you migrated. (It has the same password it did on the other computer.)

I know there is a migration assistant, but I have multiple drives in my pc.  Will the migration assistant be able to handle this?  I'm going to be trying to move the date to a new imac 27' with fusion drive.

the following set of instructions is a little longer, so you might want to print it out and have it handy
    Step 1 - PC
If your PC already is connected to the Internet, hold down the Windows button on
your keyboard and simultanously press R. Into the opening window enter "cmd" (without
the quotation marks). A command line will open, enter "ipconfig" (again without the
quotation marks) at the prompt. Now find the section labelled "Ethernet-Adaptor" and
note the values for IP-Address, Subnet-Mask and Default-Gateway on a sheet of paper
If your PC is not already connected to the internet, you need to manually configure its IP address.
    open Network and Sharing Center
do a right click on Ethernet and select Properties
in middle of the screen there is a box labelled "This connection uses the following items"
out of this box select "Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4)"
click on the Properties button in the right corner
Into the window "Use the following IP address" enter the following values
    IP-Address: 192.168.0.1
    Subnet-Mask: 255.255.255.0
Default-Gateway is the IP-Address of your Router. This value is needed for internet connection, for the file sharing setup only this value can be left empty.
    Step 2 - Mac
If your Mac already is connected to the internet, it is likely that it has automatically receive the necessary parameters from your router and therefore should be in the same network as your PC. To be on the safe side, you can check this by
    open System Preferences
    select Network
choose Ethernet from the panel on the left side of the window
    click on Advanced
    click on TCP/IP
compare the values for IP-Address, Subnet-Mask and Default-Gateway with those you wrote down earlier.
If both PC and Mac have identical numbers in the first three parts of the IP-Address, you are set.
If your Mac is not already connected to the internet, you need to manually configure its IP-Address as well.
In the TCP/IP window you have just opened select "Manually" from the drop down menu "Configure IPv4:"
    Enter the following values
    IP-Address: 192.168.0.2
    Subnet-Mask: same as with PC
    Default-Gateway: same as with PC
Step 3 - Activate File Sharing on PC
    open Control Panel
    select Network and Internet
    select Network and Sharing Center
on the left panel select change advanced sharing settings
in the middle of the new page enable turn on file and printer sharing
Step 4 - Activate File Sharing on Mac
    open System Preferences
    select Sharing
set check mark next to File Sharing (green circle appears on the right side next to File Sharing:)
    click on Options:
set check mark next to Share files and folders using SMB
in the listbox under the text Windows File Sharing make sure there is a check mark next to your account name
Step 5 - Create a share on your PC
In Explorer select the folder you wish to share
do a right click on that folder and select "Share with"
    choose "Specific people"
a new window opens. there select your Windows username (usually the first in the list)
if you plan to copy from Windows to Mac only, it would be sufficient to grant Read permission only, but, since most likely you are the only person to access that share and certainly do not plan to sabotage yourself, Read & Write permission is ok too.
    finally click on "Share"
Step 6 - Create a share on your Mac
Once the check mark next to your account name is set (see above) your home directory is automatically set as a share.
Step 7 - Connect your PC to your Mac-Share
do a right click on the network icon which resides on your desktop or in the left
    panel of every Explorer window
    Select Connect Share
in the text box next to Folder: enter \\<ip-address-of-your-mac>\<your-osx-username>
if you are using the same username and password on both Windows and OSX click on "Finish",
if not set the check mark next to "Connect using different credentials" afterwards click on "Finish" A new window will open where you enter username and password that you are using with OSX
Step 8 - Connect your Mac to your PC-Share
hold down the command key and press K simultanously or in Finder click on Go in the menu at the top of your screen and select "Connect to Server"
in the Window that opens enter smb://<your-windows-username>:<your-windows-password>@<ip-address-of-your-PC/<y our-windows-username>
    or
smb://<ip-adress-of-your-PC/<your-windows-username> you will be asked to enter your Windows username and password in popup window
Now you have both computers connected to each other. Each will provide you access to your home directory of the other computer. Open a second Explorer or Finder window with your local home directory and start copying

Thanks Mende1; I know that PPC apps won't function on Intel machines but I can migrate the Universal apps, right? There is such a large gap between Tiger and Mountain Lion - can I still migrate files directly from one to the other taking the Universal apps as well? Sorry, I'm not very computer savvy!

I am trying to use Migration Assistant but it tells me that there is an error when using it - but it doesn't tell me what and I only have teh option to quit!

I would recommend carefully reading Pondini's guide on using Migration Assitant, if you still have trouble you have 90 days of free telephone support from Apple via AppleCare. While they are more versed in OS X than MS Windows they may be able to help you. Pondini's guide is found by clicking Lion or Mountain Lion Setup Assistant tips

I was wondering if UN installing then RE installing CS 6 might solve the problem. If this is recommended, I would need complete instructions on doing this. I have there serial number for the product.

    using migration assistant is problematic.
at this point yes, you should uninstall everything migrated, clean and then reinstall properly using the installation files.

  • I am trying to transfer my itunes library from my macbook to my macbook air through migration assistant but both computers can't seem to find each other, can anyone help?

can someone help me transfer my itunes library from my macbook to macbook air, i have tried migration assistant but neither computer seems to find the other.  thx, michael

In your case, it would be better to have transferred the library to an external drive from the PC. Then, connect it to the iMac and put the library onto the Music folder.
You used Migration Assistant, and it creates a new user with the transferred data.
Open  > Log Out, and log in the new user. Then, open a Finder window, choose Music in the sidebar and you will see the iTunes library. Now, you have to move the iTunes library to /Users/Shared (select Go menu -in the menu bar- > Go to Folder, type that and copy the iTunes library to it). Finally, log in the other user, go to the same folder and move the library to the Music folder.
After doing that, open System Preferences > Users and Groups, choose the user created by Migration Assistant and press the - button to remove it. This is easier if you have an external drive

  • I transferred about 400 gigs of data from my MacBook Pro to my new iMac using Migration Assistant, but it doesn't show on Finder. How can I locate my data?

I transferred about 400 gigs of data from my MacBook Pro to my new iMac using Migration Assistant, but can't find any of my data on Finder. I'm thinking that the data got transferred but not cataloged. Finder shows about 400 gigs of my hard drive being used, but the files it shows don't come anywhere close to 400 gigs. How can I find out what is really on the hard drive and how can I access my MacBook files I transferred?

I suggest that you start over, boot into Internet recovery mode, launch Disk Utility, erase and reformat the HD with one partition and GUID option, quit Disk Utility, restore the OS, and on first boot, use the Setup Assistant to migrate from the MacBook, following the steps in Pondini's Setup New Mac guide. If that doesn't solve your problem, contact Apple's Support. If they recommend the same steps, I'd opt to return the machine and get another (you can do that the first 14 days you own it, no questions asked).

  • HT4796 I started Migration Assistant and then my old computer spontaneously restarted.  I am back in Migration Assistant but my [new] iMac is still waiting for input from my old computer, and my old computer is waiting for the iMac to connect.  What do I

I have a new iMac.  I'm using Migration Assistant to transfer files.  My old computer spontaneously shut down.  I restarted it and am trying to use Migration Asst again, but each computer is waiting on input from the other one.  What do I do?

Let me see if I've gotten this right! You want to remove an account from BOTH machines? Do this for your new machine first, then for the other.
Click the Apple logo on the top left of the screen, System Preferences, Users and Groups (under Systems), unlock the lock in the window if its locked (you need to know the password), select the user that you wish to remove, and click the - sign next to the + sign for Login options. A window will pop up with some options. Select Delete this user and securely, and click 'Delete user'.
After this, do an update from the App Store.
Thats all there is to it.
For the other machine repeat the process except for one thing. Before you delete the user in this case YOU, you will have to give Administrator priviledges to your son bu checking the box 'Allow user to administer this computer'.
Do NOT do anything from Finder ... if you dont know how to fix the consequences of the problems caused.
There is no need to unauthorize your iTunes account on your new machine. Do it on the old machine though.

  • I have used migration assistant but new profile is created, how do i merge into one

I have recently purchased Mac book and have used migration assistant to transfer files from my old windows PC.
Due to some issues when using migration tool i had to transfer in segments, each time i did this a new user was created.
I have asked for  some help and was advised that users cannot be merged however the files can be shared via dropbox.
I have received instructions as to how to do this but am stuck as once I get to the point of dropbox, I do not know what step to take next to add files into dropbox?.
    Below are instructions
Pick a User Account your going to keep, make sure it's a Admin account and if need to, log into another Admin account and make it so in System Preferences > accounts.
One logs out of their current account by using the Apple menu > Log out.
Next while in one of the accounts your later planing on removing, go to the Finder > Go > Computer and window opens.
Open  the MacintoshHD partition, then the Users folder and the User Account  you plan to keep, then the Public folder and then locate the DropBox  folder for that User. Any files placed in there will change permissions  and be accessible to that user when you log into it.

The Dropbox folder is a subfolder of the home folder, which has the same name as the user account. It's under the Users folder at the top level of the startup volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name.)

  • HT4796 can i use migration assistant from one windows laptop to another

I need to set up iTunes on a new laptop but I don't know how to do it. Migration assistant seems to be only from a windows p.c. to a mac laptop. I want to transfer all my music from old (vista) to new (7). Can I do this?

No.  Migration Assistant only works when using OS X on one of the computers.  You would have to ask Microsoft Support.
    Hope this helps

  • Migration Assistant & Assimilating/Merging Old & new accounts

    Hi,
I took a leap of faith by purchasing my latest new Mac, choosing the new Intel iMac and not a PPC. A huge leap in technology- G3 iBook 466SE Calmshell to a iMac 2.0 ICD 20" loaded w/2GB ram, 500GB Hard Drive, and worth the extra $75; 256MB of video ram. I totally dig the new iMac with the exception of a few minor quirks which I'll post them somewhere else in the discussions here.
Now on to my question at hand. When I 1st unpacked the new system I didn't use the Migration Assistant right away as I suppose I was excited and so were all of my friends and coworkers so I created a user account for my friends to play with at work for a day and for my other friends when we all got together one weekend to check it out. BTW Photo Booth and Comic Life rocks when showing it off! Anyway, I made a new account for myself and one for everyone else to use/play with. After several days went by, I decided to use Migration Assistant to move all my files from the iBook to the iMac. It took almost 3 hours! I suppose the length of time was consumed by Spotlight indexing the new data almost 40GB. My not so serious delima is that now I want to assimilate or merge all of the accounts into one. Not much to even worry about on the account I created for my friends to use, just a few Photo Booth pics and a Comic Life which I'm not worried about as I've made copies and emailed them out already. I want to merge my new account with my old one from my iBook without the loss of most of my email iTunes, music and new Safari bookmarks etc. Is there an easy way to do this or am I just unaware that this is almost a "no brainer"?
Thanks for any help, tips or suggestions.

Move the files you want to keep from one account into the /Users/Shared/ folder while logged in to that account, and then log in from the other account and drag those files to your current home folder. Once you've moved everything you want out of an account's home folder, use the Accounts pane of System Preferences to delete that account.
